This week Nicola and Di chat with the talented and inspiring Mel Wilson. Mel is a journalist, voice-over artist, podcast host and author of the new book, Parenting in Progress, which is full of stories and tips from all kinds of celebrities and experts - as Mel puts it, it's imperfect advice for the biggest role of your life. Whether you're a parent, a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle, or none of the above, there's something in this chat for everyone. In this conversation, we hear how Mel juggled her career as a podcast host and voice-over artist with being a single parent to 2 young kids and still managed to write this book in the spare moments she could find on the sidelines of a soccer game, in the back of a taxi, or on a plane - she made every minute count.  We talk about parenting these days - how no one really knows what they're doing, everyone's just trying to figure it out, but the pressure to be perfect has increased so much that it's created these new ways of parenting, such as helicopter parents and snowplough parents. We talk about how much parenting has changed over the decades and Di also shares some funny stories of her own parenting mishaps.  Mel opens up about the challenges of being a single parent, what it was like trying to survive, make a living and raise her kids in Sydney, and how her own parents stepped in to help in really practical ways - you'll want to listen in to hear what her dad did, because it might make you cry.  Mel talks about what dating is like after divorce, and her own Over The Back Fence love story - it's such a goodie!  Mel also shares some of the wonderful stories from people like Amanda Keller, Turia Pitt, Taryn Brumfitt, Sarah Harris and Sam Wood, who are just some of the incredible people she interviewed for her book.  This was such a funny and down-to-earth conversation about what it's really like to parent and juggle it all and we loved having Mel in the studio with us. We hope you love it too.   Follow Mel on IG here  Buy Mel's book Parenting In Progress here Follow Nicola and Di on IG hereSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hadi Papei saw his first burn survivor at the age of 29 when he saw a post of Turia Pitt, an Australian Engineer, and fellow burn survivor on Facebook. Burned at the age of three, Hadi's first-ever encounter with another survivor nearly 26 years later left him mind-blown and emotionally struck by what he had seen. Spending the next week searching the internet about his injuries, searching for other burn survivors like himself, Hadi found Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors and began to join a community of others that looked just like him. In this episode, Hadi shares his experience as a child burn survivor growing up in Iran, and how uncovering the burn community many years later has changed his life. We also talk with Hadi about his experience as an Astrophysicist, what it means to study galaxies and the stars within it, and how he recently defended his Ph.D. publicly with the help of the tools he learned from his burn community. About Hadi PapeiHadi is an astrophysicist, teacher, and science communicator. Hadi was born and raised in Iran, where he finished his undergraduate degree in Physics while self-teaching himself English with a dream of coming to the US for graduate studies. He went to the US and received two M.Sc. degrees in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Minnesota Duluth. He later went to the Western University in Canada and obtained his Ph.D. in Astrophysics. At the moment, he is continuing his research at the same university. Hadi was burned in a kitchen accident with hot oil at the age of three on his face and shoulder and joined the burn survivor community only at the age of 29. Connecting with other burn survivors was a life-changing moment for Hadi and helped him to accept his scars for the first time.Resources from the Show Follow Hadi on TwitterWho is Turia Pitt?Supporting Children After a Burn InjuryHelping Children After a Burn InjuryQuestions Children Ask About BurnsSelf-Care for CaregiversA Caregiver's Guide to a Burn InjuryBurn Survivors & COVID-19Video: Finding Purpose After a Burn InjurySara's Steps e-Book for ChildrenPhoenix World Burn CongressSponsor Girls with Grafts Interested in becoming a sponsor of the show? Sophie Walker Australian Birth Stories Nearly 300,000 women give birth in Australia each year and one third of them describe their birth experience as traumatic.“I wish someone had told me!' is the most common phrase for women after they give birth for the first time.Sophie's ground-breaking new book The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth is out this month.Author of “Australian Birth Stories” Sophie is a mum of 3 with a Masters in Public Health. In 2017 Sophie Walker launched her business from the back of her Nissan X Trail. In 5 years it's grown to a million dollar empire. Since the podcast launched, it's had over 10 million total downloads (episodes now clock upwards of 30,000 downloads) and has shared over 350 women's birthing stories including Turia Pitt, Zoe Foster-Blake, Ash London, Steph Claire Smith and Emma Isaacs. It has a waitlist of 5000 women who want to share their stories. And, 146,000 mothers, mothers-to-be, and midwives now form Sophie's online community.Endorsed by the Australian College of Midwives, the podcast is nationally recognised as an education tool and is used as certified professional development for student midwives across Australia.Sophie's motivation comes from personal experience – her first birth was traumatic; a long labour and forceps-assisted birth resulted in a postpartum hemorrhage and pelvic floor trauma. When she fell pregnant for the second time, she was fiercely determined to do things differently. She listened to every birth podcast, watched every birth documentary, read every book and armed herself with birth skills. Her second birth was positive, empowering and redemptive and it became the first ever episode on the podcast. A new generation of mothers are desperate for stories of conception, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding. After years of pandemic isolation and with one-third of Australian women describing their birth experience as traumatic, pregnant mothers and those trying to conceive are hungry for tips, tricks and first hand accounts of birth. They want to know how to prepare, what their options are and how they can navigate the challenge of labour with birth skills. And they want to learn from the wisdom of women's birth stories. For Sophie, education is the secret weapon against birth trauma. She believes every woman has the right to a positive birth experience.Deborah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/what.ive.learnt/Mind, Film and Publishing: https://www.mindfilmandpublishing.com/Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/what-ive-learnt/id153556330Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3TQjCspxcrSi4yw2YugxBkBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1365850

Have you heard about that time a tiger shark regurgitated a human arm in the Coogee Aquarium? It was the afternoon of April 26th, 1935, when the largest shark ever in captivity (we're calling her Shirley) spewed up a full human arm in front of a dozen witnesses. The arm bore a distinctive tattoo & was identified as belonging to a known Sydney criminal named Jimmy. There are lots of twists & turns in this story & even a high speed boat chase, but how Jimmy's arm ended up in Shirley's stomach (and what happened to the rest of him) still remains a mystery to this day. And now, she's adding a new one to the list: Podcast host. Releasing her brand new Audible Original podcast, Every Body with Robyn Lawley: Surviving & Thriving In A Body Shaming World, on March 23, 2021, the series is Lawley's latest move on a mission to redefine physical beauty. Interviewing incredible guests like Turia Pitt and Jameela Jamil—as well as 'ordinary' people who continue to conquer the world in spite of chronic illness—Lawley turns a critical eye on the #BodyPositive movement and ask: who does it leave on the margin, and what is a better call to action. Top Australian model Robyn Lawley has always been outspoken when it comes to advocating for diversity within the fashion industry. Yet there remains at least one topic she's shied away from: her epilepsy. Since 2018, Lawley has suffered from horrific and debilitating seizures caused by the autoimmune condition Lupus. She opened up about and shared the trauma from these seizures on social media, but it is only now that she is revealing she also has epilepsy.
