How to Transform a SaaS Company with AI from ELMO CTO

What happens when a software company building AI tools for HR teams uses those same tools to transform itself? Josh McKenzie, Chief Technology Officer at ELMO Software Group, shares how his team rebuilt their entire software development lifecycle around AI agents and redrew the boundaries of every engineering role. He breaks down how to lead that shift without losing people's trust, why domain expertise is the real SaaS moat, and how the right analytics partner unlocks decisions HR teams have never been able to make before. Key Moments: The SaaS Moat: What AI Can't Erode (06:37): Josh argues SaaS value runs deeper than software. Accountability, compliance, and domain expertise keep purpose-built platforms irreplaceable. How ELMO's AI Journey Started (10:23): ELMO started by mapping every role against AI impact. Turning that lens on their own engineering team set the full transformation in motion. Why ELMO Chose ThoughtSpot Over Building Its Own Analytics (18:42): A homegrown tool requiring too much user expertise led ELMO to look elsewhere. ThoughtSpot Spotter and natural language capabilities closed the gap. Why HR Teams Are the Most Underserved (20:21): Payroll here, benchmarking data there, performance data somewhere else. HR teams have been drowning in spreadsheet hell for years. Josh explains how AI finally closes that gap. From Engineer to CTO: Build a Team of Complements (24:17): Josh reflects on the mindset shift that defined his path to the C-suite. Great leadership means building a team whose strengths cover your blind spots. Key Quotes: “ ThoughtSpot was particularly interesting for us… The big thing for us was the Spotter product. Allowing users to bridge that data analyst gap was really important. So, that product has yielded really, really great results for us.” - Josh McKenzie “I think it's really important that we instill a culture where it's okay to fail, and it's okay to make a mistake. You want to be vocal about your mistakes so others don't repeat the same mistake.” - Josh McKenzie “My belief is you want to focus on your secret sauce. So, what is the thing that makes your business super successful? And for us, that's where we came to look at ThoughtSpot. It has a really nice visual user interface and allows you to create some great dashboards.” - Josh McKenzie Mentions Hiring and Onboarding Taking Longer Despite Widespread AI Adoption, New Australian Research Finds The 5 Levels of AI Coding (Why Most of You Won't Make It Past Level 2) WireGuard: Next Generation Kernel Network Tunnel | Jason A. Donenfeld Guest Bio As the Chief Technology Officer, Josh McKenzie is responsible for both technical strategy and delivery (build, release and operation) of the ELMO product suite. Josh has a proven track record of successfully leading technology teams and implementing transformative strategies that enhance efficiency, drive growth, and elevate overall technological capabilities. Josh has 20 years of experience in technology, primarily in FinTech. Before joining ELMO in 2024, Josh held executive and senior positions at Lendi Group, OFX, ASX and Westpac. Josh holds a Bachelor of Computer Science from the University of Newcastle and an MBA from the University of Sydney. Hear more from Cindi Howson here. Sponsored by ThoughtSpot.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. invites a one-time rising star in the NASCAR garage, Georgia's own Reed Sorenson. After having a meteoric rise from the American Speed Association to becoming a development driver for Chip Ganassi Racing, Reed was on everyone's radar in stock car racing. He would enter the O'Reilly Series ranks in winning fashion, just narrowly missing out on Rookie of the Year honors to NASCAR Hall of Famer Carl Edwards. Ganassi tabbed him to replace Casey Mears in the Cup Series, and before Reed knew it, he was living his racing dreams at the young age of 20. Once there, though, Reed quickly realized that every rung up the ladder in racing brought more challenges, and a series of missteps and bad deals would leave him searching for a stable opportunity in racing. Reed comes from a racing family. His father, Brad, was a longtime mainstay in the Southeast late model scene, running local tracks like Lanier on a weekly basis and even making a Busch Grand National start in 1992. Once Reed was old enough to reach the pedals, though, his family focused completely on his racing endeavors. He'd start out in quarter midgets and win his way across North America before graduating to Legend cars. Legend cars led to late models, and Reed caught the eye of Lorin Ranier during his time racing with ASA, which helped facilitate his introduction to Ganassi. Reed would experience the triumph of being one of the sports' top prospects before years of dealing with the cruel reality of the world of racing. Dale Jr. and Reed discuss his rapid ascent to the NASCAR Cup grid, his near-misses and opportunities, and his departure from full-time racing. Discover how enterprise AI and data strategy are operationalized at scale in one of the most highly regulated industries in the world. Louis DiModugno, Global Chief Data Officer at Verisk, shares how he builds AI-ready data foundations across 40+ petabytes of insurance and risk data, and the best practices behind embedding AI into enterprise products. He discusses unstructured data, deepfakes, and the shift from governance to observability, offering practical insights for data leaders scaling AI responsibly. Key Moments: From Military Leadership to Chief Data Officer: Data Integrity as a Competitive Advantage (03:02): Louis shares how his experience as a U.S. Air Force Colonel has shaped his approach to data governance, data quality, and enterprise AI leadership. He explains why integrity, service, and operational excellence are essential foundations for modern CDOs building trusted, decision-ready data environments. Building AI-Ready Data Foundations at a 40+ Petabyte Scale (17:13): Managing more than 40 petabytes of insurance and risk data, Louis breaks down how Verisk transforms complex, multi-source data into AI-ready infrastructure. From entity resolution and master data management to benchmarking and predictive analytics, he outlines what it takes to prepare enterprise data for AI and advanced analytics at scale. Designing an AI-First Data Strategy for Enterprise Decision Intelligence (20:00): Louis breaks down how Verisk evolved toward an AI-first data strategy across more than 150 insurance and analytics products. Rather than treating AI as an add-on, he explains how embedding AI into core workflows enables smarter underwriting, pricing, regulatory reporting, and risk management. He also discusses the strategic role ThoughtSpot plays in delivering natural language search, embedded analytics, and scalable AI-driven decision making. AI Fraud, Deepfakes, and Risk Management in Financial Services (26:11): As AI-generated images and synthetic claims become more sophisticated, Louis discusses how the insurance industry is combating deepfake fraud and AI-driven manipulation. He shares best practices around AI risk management, vendor partnerships, and regulatory collaboration to protect policyholders and maintain trust. Unstructured Data and AI: Why Governance Still Matters (29:28): Louis explores how expanding beyond structured data is reshaping enterprise AI. He explains why incorporating unstructured data into vector databases, graph models, and knowledge systems can significantly improve model accuracy and decision confidence. At the same time, he emphasizes that stronger governance (or observability as he reframes it) is essential as organizations scale AI across regulated industries. Key Quotes: “The more data that you bring to the equation, the more elements that you have in the algorithm, the higher level of accuracy you should be able to reach with your outcomes.” - Louis DiModugno “I've tried to move away from using the word governance as much as I like to use the word observability, because I really think observability shows more aspects of what it is that we are doing with the data.” - Louis DiModugno “The underlying aspect of what ThoughtSpot's delivering to them is our insights that not only give them their answer, but also give them insights that maybe they weren't looking specifically for. One of the big benefits of ThoughtSpot is that it's trying to anticipate what you're asking for.” - Louis DiModugno “We've partnered with ThoughtSpot, which brings AI embedded within its product. By having our data available through the data sets that we populate through the ThoughtSpot products, we've got the opportunity to utilize Spotter and the natural language processing capabilities to interact with the data, so that you can ‘talk with your data'.” - Louis DiModugno Mentions From Months to Weeks: How Verisk Scaled Embedded Analytics Breaking Down Digital Media Fraud for Claims in the AI Era Randy Bean's 2026 AI & Data Leadership Executive Benchmark Survey Guest Bio  Louis DiModugno brings more than 20 years of career experience in data and analytics to his new role. He has held several leadership positions in insurance and (re)insurance at firms including The Hartford and AXA US, where he served as the company's inaugural Chief Data & Analytics Officer. Most recently, DiModugno pioneered the role of Chief Data and Technology Officer for Hartford Steam Boiler. Before entering the private sector, DiModugno served with distinction as a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserves. He has held teaching positions at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and he currently serves on the Chief Data Officer Advisory Council for the George Mason University School of Business. Does your son have a “spotter”? In NASCAR, each driver has a “spotter.” It's a person who stands high above the racetrack and communicates, through a radio, what's behind, around, and ahead of the driver. As Brad Henry points out in his book Destination- The Winner's Circle, every young man needs a spotter. They need someone who has a wider perspective, who can point out potential issues behind and ahead of them. Unfortunately, young men tend to listen to the spotter more closely if that person is NOT a parent. Start helping your son seek out a youth pastor, a church deacon, or a great male teacher who could be their positive mentor and “spotter.” And of course, point your son to the ultimate spotter– God, the Author and Finisher of our faith. Logan Harris is CEO, President, and Founder of Spotter Global—a company specializing in compact radar and drone detection technologies. Spotter Global imagines, designs, manufactures, and coordinates the software development of compact surveillance radars, Remote Drone ID, NetworkedIO command and control, and its Integrated Management Center. The company was originally founded to meet the needs of U.S. Special Forces, who required a very small, wide-area radar to protect small units conducting Village Stability Operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. From that need, the first Compact Surveillance Radar—the M600—was developed to protect warfighters operating in austere environments. In 2013, the attack on the Metcalf substation in California highlighted the need to detect threats far beyond the fence line. In response, Spotter introduced its first Compact Security Radar, the C40. Since then, the company has expanded its commercial off-the-shelf offerings to include 17 radar models covering areas from one acre to more than 380 acres, serving markets well beyond critical infrastructure—and far beyond North America. Logan is widely recognized as the inventor of the compact surveillance radar category. With deep expertise in RF engineering and digital signal processing, he launched SpotterRF in 2009 to help prevent harm to critical infrastructure and protect warfighters. Previously, Logan served as CTO at Wavetronix and as CTO and co-founder of ImSAR, the creator of NanoSAR. His engineering background also includes roles at IBM, TRW, Sensar Larson Davis, and Vantage. Logan holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University. Known for his innovation and leadership, he has positioned Spotter Global as a trusted radar provider across government and commercial sectors. In this episode of the Drone Radio Show, Logan talks about the growing reality of drone threats, how Spotter Global is using advanced detection and Remote ID technology to protect critical infrastructure and large public events, and what the future of airspace security looks like as agencies, regulations, and technologies continue to evolve.

Modellen STOR får du her - Frameworket ”De Fire Esser” får du ved at signe dig op her. Men først får du STOR modellen. Hvordan bruger du modellen i praksis? ...

This week on Everybody in the Pool, we're diving into ocean intelligence. Despite covering more than 70% of the Earth, the ocean remains one of the least understood parts of our climate system — and that knowledge gap has huge consequences for weather prediction, global commerce, and climate resilience. Our guest is Tim Janssen, co-founder and CEO of Sofar Ocean, a company building the world's largest privately deployed network of ocean sensors. Their inexpensive, solar-powered Spotter buoys collect real-time data on waves, weather, and water conditions — information that fuels better climate models, safer shipping routes, and more sustainable ocean economies. We talk about:The massive “ocean data gap” and why it hinders weather and climate forecastingHow Sofar's 2,500+ Spotter buoys are creating the largest private ocean sensor networkWayfinder, Sofar's “Google Maps for ships,” and how it saves fuel and cuts emissionsWhy more ocean intelligence is critical for industries from aquaculture to shippingPartnerships with researchers, governments, and nonprofits to democratize ocean dataThe bigger vision: turning ocean information into a foundation for climate solutionsFrom global trade to Pacific Island communities, ocean intelligence has the potential to save money, reduce emissions, and protect vulnerable coastlines. Janssen explains why data may be the most important climate solution of all.LINKS:Sofar Ocean: https://www.sofarocean.com/All episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://everybodyinthepool.supercast.com/Please subscribe and tell your friends about Everybody in the Pool! In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I sit down with James Smith, who leads ThoughtSpot's business across EMEA. With over 15 years in the analytics space, James shares how AI is shifting the way organizations use data, and why that change is not just about technology, but also about mindset and culture. James explains how ThoughtSpot is helping businesses move toward a more autonomous model, where AI-powered tools handle repetitive queries and free up analysts for more strategic work. He shares how ThoughtSpot's “Spotter” tool enables business users to ask and answer their own data questions, helping to reduce the bottlenecks that many central data teams face. But this isn't about removing people from the process. It's about enabling better collaboration between AI and human decision-makers, where transparency and context guide smarter actions. We also talk about ThoughtSpot's internal motto, “2% done,” and how that mentality drives continuous innovation. In a world that's changing rapidly, it's a reminder that staying curious, challenging assumptions, and building from first principles can unlock new levels of performance. As demand for AI-powered insights increases, James highlights the growing importance of strong data foundations. It's not enough to just add AI on top. Organizations need to invest in data quality, governance, and flexible platforms that support users at every level of maturity. From enabling better business decisions to giving non-technical users easier access to insights, James offers a grounded view of what AI can really deliver today. If you're working to build a data-driven culture, or looking to put more power in the hands of your teams, this conversation offers practical ideas to guide that transformation. How are you preparing your business for this shift in analytics? Let me know.
