A second episode this week as it's a timely chat with MayKay, the vocalist, singer-songwriter and Other Voices presenter who is returning to her original role as lead vocalist with the band Fight Like Apes. The band split up in 2016 after releasing three albums Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion (2008), The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner (2010) and Fight Like Apes (2015) along with a series of EPs.Flapes as they're affectionally known, were one of the first buzz bands out of Ireland in the online era, bursting onto the scene with ‘Lend Me Your Face' and deflating a scene in which singer-songwriter had a chokehold on things by bringing a sense of pop culture fun with synth-pop and alternative, punk rock energy and catchy hooks.Ahead of the band's big comeback show at 3Olympia Theatre on Friday March 24th, I spoke to May Kay about what it's like to return to the well of the past, which songs hit different, how the London and rehearsal show went, and how she views the band's time in the spotlight now.We also talk about MayKay's trip to Palestine last year, and the plight of the Palestinian people who have lived in an apartheid state for the last 75 years, and why it's so important to hear the Palestinian people's own everyday stories of living under occupation and oppression.ACLAI is an Irish gym founded by Ainle O'Cairealla'in in Palestine.Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC)Fight Like Apes' vinyl albums on Rubyworks / Alcopop Records.Listen to the Nialler9 Podcast on Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed* Support Nialler9 on Patreon & join our Discord communityShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. It's the end, but the moment has been prepared for. Mostly with stupid jokes and some fantastic music. Sail this ship with me to another meeting with The Beatle Brothers, a session from the Reverse Beautiful South, some obscene phone calls, a wow over Wembley, the latest in meditation techniques, only a minor breakdown and songs by Eskimo Fandango, Cathy Davey, Kraftwerk, Fight Like Apes, The Fatima Mansions, Jilted John and flipping loads more. That was series two. Will there be a series three? Let me know what you think on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/BenBasement You can always link music to me there too that might get played if this loser bus ever gets back on the road. Find full tracklists and links to where you can buy the music played on the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/beninthebasement Thank you to everyone who listened, shared and said kind things throughout the run. A year without gigs... March 2020 marked a year since our last 'proper' shows. My last one was Girl Band at Cyprus Avenue, Cork, on March 7, 2020. Eoin Aher, who has been booking shows at the venue since 2003 joins to talk about how Covid hit his livelihood, how they've been dealing with it since and whether we can expect gigs later in 2021 (spoiler: hopefully). We then talk about the archive project he's put together for cyprusavenue.ie, listing all of the shows that have been staged there since 2003. We feature early gigs by the likes of Snow Patrol, Gavin James, the Blizzards, Mumford (and no Sons at that time) and lots more, as well as some of our favourite and most memorable - the likes of any Fight Like Apes gig of five in 2007, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Villagers. Eoin also discusses the venue's refurbishment, the changing tastes of audiences, the importance of the support band and slot, and why they don't book shows based on streaming numbers. https://www.cyprusavenue.ie/archive

Godknows Ronnie Jr is our featured artiste this week. Soulful, Rasta vibes from this ultra-talented Zimbabwean now working and living in Cape Town. It's a cover of a classic track originally recorded by a giant. You'll get to know a little bit more about this Zimbabwean musician, comic, actor, host and performing artist later on in the show notes. For now, just listen to that voice and marvel. Bookending the show this week is the mighty Vulfpeck, drawing on such talent as Corey Wong and Blake Mills the band are a monolithic funk force to be reckoned with. They've recently successfully ended a crowd funding event with a nearly 4000% success rate. You can join in the fun and order the Live at Madison Square Garden vinyl package here. UK tour kicking off soon too. Listener Recommendation extraordinaire We have what is quite simply one of the best Listener Recommendations to date as well on the show. The sublime vocal arresting Fight Like Apes entertain us with a vitriolic tale of a woman scorned. Sadly, Tobin has more than a tale of woe to recount about this excellent band. No longer together for all the wrong reasons, they're another victim of the music industry and its capitalist snake eating its own tale mentality. Where's Peter Grant when you need him? Complementing the already stellar music on today's show is another cover from Australian surf layabouts Headland. It's a far departure from the original but no worse for it. Withered Hand executes some sombre acoustic wizard and Tobin introduces us to nocturnal music legend NYX Not. So, let's tread quietly, lay low and look across the prairie. Rango II Vulfpeck Remember Me Godknows Ronnie Jr I'm Beginning To Think You Prefer Beverly Hills 90210 To Me Fight Like Apes Deaf Forever Headland Radio NYX NYX Not No Cigarettes Withered Hand Animal Spirits Vulfpeck Godknows Ronnie Jr Right ho, Jamie, our Content Lead has been in touch with Cape Town Sound for more information on Godknows Ronnie Jr but maternity leave and the holiday season has scuppered most of it. So, when we receive more information we'll post it here. In the meantime here's what Cape Town Sound sent us over with the submission. "Remember Me" - New-comer GODKNOWS RONNIE Jr. debuts with "REMEMBER ME" - a unique interpretation of Rasta legend LUCKY DUBE's mega-smash hit in South Africa. GODKNOWS RONNIE Jr. is from Zimbabwe - now living and working in Cape Town. Nicole - Cape Town Sound

With War for the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters this week, it seemed like as good a time as any to rope in Heidi Kemps of gaming.moe and launch our own exploration of the simian perspective with five games that let us play as hulking, violent apes instead of puny humans. We then move on to talking about Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, Gorn, Hoobastank's frontman singing Sonic Forces' theme song, and games you've finished, but wish you'd spent more time with anyway.
