This week, he will, he will rock you as we begin the first themeless month on the pod in quite a while with a movie that Hayley has seen north of 50 times and Justin has never seen before now. It's 2001's A Knight's Tale, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, and starring Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Laura Fraser and James Purefoy. It's the movie that firmly cemented Ledger as a movie star, as Helgeland crafts an underdog sports movie in the world of medieval jousting. Plus we've got theatrical field trips to report on as Hayley caught Drive-Away Dolls this week, while J Mo took in the Tenet re-release on 70mm. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, A Knight's Tale is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Macbeth, Dune: Part 2, Madame Web, Mr. 3000, Top Gun, 10 Things I Hate About You, Lords of Dogtown, I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight, Capote, Dark City, Dazed & Confused, Rollerball, Payback, The Order, L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, Blood Work, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. We'll be back next week to celebrate one full year of ADHD-DVD as we die and go to buddy-cop heaven with Stallone and Kurt Russell in 1989's Tango & Cash. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Join Tamara for an interview with Kristopher Monroe: "writer, editor, and freelance culture assassin with over two decades of experience writing about the arts and other symptoms of human creativity." He was born and raised in Atlanta, where he began his freelance writing career, then lived in Seattle and NYC before settling in Savannah in 2013. You've probably read Kristopher's arts column in the Savannah Morning News, which he wrote for many years. He's also contributed to publications ranging from The Atlantic Monthly, Playboy, Village Voice, Juxtapoz, Dazed & Confused, Beautiful/Decay, and Swindle. Lately he's been serving as the current Chair of the Savannah-Chatham County Historic Site and Monument Commission, AND has returned to his first writing love - sci-fi and cyberpunk - and is actively looking for an agent for his recently-completed first novel! Check out Kristopher's work and follow him here: https://www.cultureassassin.com/ https://www.instagram.com/savartscene/ https://www.amazon.com/What-Tired-Web-We-Breed-ebook/dp/B07XPD8PH6 Topics in their chat include: What Kristopher means by calling himself "a cultural assassin;" how the World Trade Organization protests impacted his life trajectory; how he fell into writing about fine art, street art, and pop art despite no formal art education; how 2013 was the last time that either Kristopher or I had a full-time job (!); his years spent balancing a weekly SMN column with 1-2 columns in the Do magazine; how he has blossomed into full adulthood in his community work; and how in the past couple of years he has gotten back to his early love of sci-fi and surrealist creative writing - one short story is available on Amazon for $1 (with cover art by local designer and art aficionado Don Sanders!) - plus a full novel; and his obscure skills with running and fixing a 35mm film projector. Tune in and get all the details!
This week's show is with Daniel Pinchbeck. Daniel is the New York Times bestselling author of Breaking Open the Head, 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl, How Soon Is Now, and When Plants Dream (with Sophia Roklhin). He hosted the talk show Mind Shift on Gaia TV and was featured in the 2010 documentary, 2012: Time for Change. He has written for many publications including The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Wired, Dazed & Confused, Purple, and ArtForum. He is the director of Liminal.news, an online course platform, and publishes a regular newsletter, Danielpinchbeck.substack.com . In this conversation, Daniel and I explored the fascinating topic of Secret Histories and Spiritual Revolutions, why we need magic right now, and how our relationship to myth can reawaken our imaginative and intuitive faculties. The quote we mentioned: “What if at the higher levels of meaning consciousness is like a hyperspace in which each point is equidistant from the other and where ‘the center is everywhere and the circumference is nowhere? … The mythologies of the occult seem like baroque music: there is an overall similar quality of sound and movement, but, upon examination, each piece of music is unique; Vivaldi and Scarlatti are similar and different.” - William Irwin Thompson, Passages About Earth I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Even as someone who spends a lot of time contemplating the importance of magic, it impacted me deeply hearing Daniel share about how Western esoteric knowledge in particular is largely missing in today's world We, as a culture, have ridiculed and denied the truth and power of magic and esoteric knowledge, and there's something very healing in reclaiming it I loved what Daniel said about how our relationship to myth can reawaken our imaginative and intuitive faculties. Humans live and think mythologically, that we are scientific and logical just isn't true, the more we can make our mythical nature conscious, the more we can engage with myths in a generative and opening way Resources and stuff that we spoke about: The article that inspired this conversation Daniel's Official Newsletter: Liminal News Daniel's Website: theliminalinstitute Thank you for listening! He is the director of Liminal.news, an online course platform, and publishes a regular newsletter, Danielpinchbeck.substack.com . In this conversation, Daniel and I explored the fascinating topic of DMT, (N, N-Dimethyltryptamine) also known as the Spirit Molecule. We covered what DMT is, its history and research that's been done about it, and how Daniel sees its role in human consciousness and the challenges of the world today. I'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment below. What you'll learn from this episode: Daniel described the two schools of thought around the use of psychedelics, one ceremonial and one purely focused on their medical use, given the wider benefits of modern humans reclaiming our connection to nature and to the ancient practice of ceremony and ritual, if you're listening to this show then you don't need to choose between those options - you can have both! I loved what Daniel said about the ways that different spiritual traditions have practices such as darkness immersion and meditation that open humans to the kinds of experiences that taking DMT can create... ultimately all of these practices appear to be giving us an experience of reality beyond that of our ordinary human consciousness There's a renaissance in the use of DMT in its various forms happening now and we're discovering uses and benefits in all kinds of fields - as Daniel said, this could be akin to the period in which we discovered electricity and how to harness it Resources and stuff that we spoke about Daniel's Official Newsletter Thank you for listening! We traveled to Winchester Brew Works for our conversation today with Justin Kerns from Winchester/Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Joining us for our Tourism Tuesday chat was Holly Redding, co-owner of Winchester Brew Works who are hosting this year's Hop Blossom that happens on Saturday, June 11 from 12pm - 6pm on the Old Town Walking Mall in downtown Winchester. Holly gave us all the details for the event, now in it's 9th year and talked about how excited she and the planning committee are to bring the event back after a two-year pandemic hiatus. Hop Blossom focuses on craft beer education and exposing participants to the growing popularity and love for great craft beer. This year will feature 40+ breweries, local vendors, and so much more! Hop Blossom is also a fundraiser supporting the efforts of Dakota's Dream - a small, volunteer-run, no-kill, non-for profit animal rescue group and Winchester Main Street Foundation - a nonprofit organization focusing on producing and bringing in quality events through music and the arts, beautification projects, and youth education programs to build Winchester's unique brand, improve the quality of life in Winchester, support and work with other nonprofit organizations, and build our Main Street Community. Holly also filled us in on a few events leading up to Hop Blossom including a showing of Dazed & Confused at Alamo Drafthouse and a trivia night at 50/50 Taphouse. Holly explained that this event doesn't happen without a team of volunteers to plan, to setup, to pour, to tear down, and more. If you're interested in being a volunteer, visit their website: https://hopblossom.com/volunteer/ Before we wrapped up our conversation we chatted a bit about Winchester Brew Work's 6th anniversary. Get more details about them on their website: https://www.winchesterbrewworks.com/ Be sure to follow Hop Blossom on Facebook and on Instagram to stay up to date on announcements. We had the pleasure of interviewing Foghat over Zoom video! Foghat celebrates their 50th anniversary this year, and their live performances show why the band is still around and why they will be able to keep on rockin' as long as they want to play! Their music is timeless, and touring is part of their DNA. Foghat's live show is as intense as ever with the incredible energy and musicianship that one would expect and hope for from a seasoned band with such a long musical history and they are bringing their fans along for the ride. These guys just love to play! And now, after 1-1/2 years off due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, they are more than ready to get out there and rock again, with many shows booked for the second half of 2021!Foghat fans are everywhere and their audience consists of all ages. From the young who play Guitar Hero III and know all the lyrics to “Slow Ride,” to the Dazed & Confused generation of 30-40 somethings and the “boomers” who bought Foghat's first vinyl or 8-track! Looking out at the audience and seeing all generations rockin' to Foghat is very gratifying to the band. According to lead singer Charlie Huhn, “The band just wants to make sure that after every show, they are all convinced that they just got rocked, from the second we start the first song to the end of the show.”Formed in 1971 when Lonesome Dave Peverett & Roger Earl left the British blues-rock band, Savoy Brown, Foghat has earned eight Gold records, one Platinum record and one Double-Platinum record. They continue to release new music every few years and have never stopped touring and recording although there have been several ups and downs and changes over the years. They sadly lost Lonesome Dave Peverett in 2000 and Rod Price in 2005, but Roger Earl keeps banging and kicking to keep Foghat's musical legacy going. If Foghat had only given us “Slow Ride,” the band's place in rock history would be secure. But the band is so much more than that. As stated by Roger Earl, “we are still a ‘work in progress,' writing and recording and plan to be until the day we depart this earth.”The band has started work on yet another Blues/Rock Studio Album to be released in 2022)! So, stay tuned, you cannot keep these boys down!We want to hear from you! “Summer breeze makes me feel fine. Blowin' through the jasmine in my mind. Summer breeze makes me feel fine. Blowin' through the jasmine in my mind. – Summer Breeze/Seals & Croft What a great song! It's one of those that take me back to my teen years, not a care in the world. Long hair, cruising around town, throwing the Frisbee, getting high and a kegger party every weekend. Just like the 1993 movie Dazed & Confused. Oh those days of misspent youth… I really dig the warm summer breeze on a summer evening. I spend most of the summer nights on my deck enjoying the weather usually listening to Pat Hughes calling the Cubs games; it's my living room in the summer! Welcome back to Home Brew Rock Stars Episode 76 we are calling ‘Let's Play Beer!' The gang's back to continue on our roundtable conversations, ball busting, and drinking beer. We are including a new format we will be using occasionally with Pete Domino and Jason Sears (to avoid confusion will refer to Mike as Sears the Elder and Jason as Sears the Sune) to sit in with us in round table fashion (actually it's a pool table with maroon felt). We just discuss what's on our minds based on summer and of course beer! Sears the Elder brought his Special Bitter a 4.5% ABV easy drinker brewed with marris otter, munich and crystal 60 grain and a combination of fuggle and cascade hops. Sears the Sune and Pete brought their Blood Orange Gueuze. A delicious kettle soured beer using hallertau mittelfruh hops and fermented with London Ale III 1318 yeast complimented by the blood orange, perfect summer sipper at 4.5% ABV. If you have not figured it out WE LOVE BEER and if you have a homebrew that you would like us to try and review on the podcast contact us and we will make arrangements to get it into our thirsty hands.
