I feel so fortunate to live just over an hour away from one of the most beautiful coastlines on this planet.This recording was made at Yoakam Point, near Coos Bay Oregon, about 4 hours down the coast. It's a uniquely beautiful sounding surf here, I have to say.And you might think to yourself, all beaches sound nice, Chad. And well, it would be hard-hearted of me to try to argue with you on that point. They all do sound nice, but some just sound more nice. The tuning here must have something to do with the rocks that reach into the ocean lake a giant hand, as if playing the surf like so many harp strings. The scarp ridges reflect the sound waves of the tumbling surf like a giant instrument, but not in a way that sounds like mush. The contours are clean and the details are sharp. If you listen closely you'll hear the distant moan of a fog horn on the low end (though I did soften it considerably with a low scoop EQ) and the peals of Pigeon Guillemot on the high end of this soundscape. Now if you're like me, you might wonder, why is it called “Yoakam Point”? And, if you're like me, not finding an answer at the ready makes this one of life's little mysteries that needs to be solved. I expected it to be named for some ship captain or crew mate. If not that, then certainly a white man, probably a pioneer or politician, or both. So, wading through numerous Google results for modern country singer Dwight Yoakam, I finally chanced upon a couple fascinating stories tracing the Yoakam surname in Coos County. And, to my surprise these stories enobled no man, but spoke to the perseverance of two generations of Yoakam women. How refreshing!Tragedy of the Burning TreeIn 1855 newly arrived settlers Eliza and John Yoakam lost five daughters to a tree aflame falling on their home, as detailed in this 1906 obituary:In 1855 they moved to a homestead about six miles from Empire City on [what] is now known as the Cammon wagon road.It was here that the awful tragedy of Mrs. Yoakam's life occurred—one that would only be possible in pioneer days, when a large, burning tree fell with terrific force upon their little cabin, shattering it and instantly killing five of their children, one a babe in its mother's arms. The accident happened in the evening, when the children were nearly all asleep, and when later the anguished parents searched amid the ruins of their little ones, they found four of them dead where they had slept. Two little boys, Jasper and George, aged 7 and 5 years, still missing, were found in their little trundle bed alive and fast asleep. The branches of the tree had fallen in such a manner as to shield their little bed, and the commotion had not even awakened them. The scene of the accident is known as Yoakam's Hill, and stately firs, spreading cedars the graceful rhododendron now grow in wild luxuriance where these hapless children lie in their dreamless sleep.The homestead was abandoned, as the poor mother could find no happiness there, and after a few sad months in Empire City and Eastport, they moved to the Coquiller River, where they remained until 1867, when they bought the William Jackson farm on South Coos River, and literally hewed for themselves a home out of the wilderness. In this home probably the happiest years of Mrs. Yoakam s life were spent; other children came to her almost empty arms, and listening to their happy laughter, her old sorrow gradually faded away. For many years “Yoakam's” was synonymous with good cheer and hospitality.Mrs. Yoakam was a woman of rare type, well fitted by nature for the struggles and adventures of pioneer life. Mr. Yoakam died in 1876, and for many years his widow successfully managed the farm, failing health finally compelling her to leave it. She was the mother of twelve children, five of whom survive her. (Coquille Herald)One of her children, George Yoakam, died in 1901, gored by a neighbor's wayward bull, leaving his wife Sarah, three daughters and a son. Taking a page from her mother-in-law, Sarah successfully managed the family farm in the wake of the tragedy.Sarah Yoakam Forges AheadThat a woman can conduct a dairy farm most successfully is nicely proved in the case of Mrs. Sarah Yoakam of Coos county, near Marshfield, Ore., whose husband, a prominent rancher, was killed by a vicious bull some thirteen years ago. In the years Intervening since she and her two daughters have conducted and developed the dairy business in which her husband was engaged. For a good share of the time they have done all the work on the farm, including the care of the dairy herd and the securing of the farm crops. (Union Star)Indeed Sarah not only succeeded on her farm, but went on to become a leader in the trade.Sarah Yoakam, who ran her husband's Coos County dairy upon his death seven years earlier, was voted the first female vice-president of the Oregon State Dairyman's Association. The next year she became the superintendent of the Dairy Department of the Oregon State Fair. (cooshistory.org)Now, how exactly this headland came to be known as Yoakam Point is not crystal clear. The acreage was one of 19 locations purchased by the state in 1968. The state wayside simply carried over the accepted name. Oregon Geographic Names suggests the name was in use for “many decades” prior to 1952, attributed to the pioneer family:For many decades this name has been applied to a small promontory about a mile west of Coos Head just south of the entrance to Coos Bay. It commemorates a family well known in the history of the county. (Oregon Geographic Names, 1952)Mussel ReefI think it's important to include the settler prehistory here. Before the name Yoakam Point gained acceptance among the settlers of the area, it seems like “Mussel Reef” was in play. The area was inhabited by the Coos people from time immemorial. This particular shoreline was an abundant intertidal zone rich with mollusks and crustaceans used for both food and regalia. Sites of archeological importance are documented here. A half mile west of Yoakam Point, sits Chiefs Island, on which stands the defunct Cape Arago Lighthouse. The island was repatriated to the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw in 2013. That site contains a very large, deep midden, indicating an extended presence on the island. It is closed to the public.Coos Bay was a distinctly rich cultural area prior to Euro-American settlement. it brought together five tribes speaking as many different languages (or dialects) within short distance each other: Miluk (Coos), Hanis (Coos), Quuiich (Lower Umpqua) Nasomah dialect (Lower Coquille) and Athabaskan (Upper Coquille).Noting the abundant natural resources and prospects for establishing a port, early settlers converged on the peninsula in the center of the bay, incorporating the town of Empire City next to a Miluk village, about 10 miles inland from Yoakam Point. Empire City is today the Empire neighborhood of the city of Coos Bay. Within just a few years of the first settlers arriving, the tribes were forcibly removed and eventually relocated to the Siletz Agency of the Coast Reservation. Like most treaties in the west, promises were broken when the US congress systematically failed to ratify them. Thanks for reading and listening. I'm grateful for your interest. Considering the number of people who are constantly chasing after contentment, you'd think someone would have found a tried and true formula by now, right? Unfortunately, it seems we need to keep looking, if such a formula even exists (which after making this episode of Sunday Sanctuary seems increasingly unlikely). The Acolyte, also known as Star Wars: The Acolyte, is an American science fiction television series created by Leslye Headland for the streaming service Disney+. It is part of the Star Wars franchise, set at the end of the High Republic era before the events of the Skywalker Saga, and follows a Jedi investigation into a series of crimes.Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, Margarita Levieva, Lauren Brady, Leah Brady, Harry Trevaldwyn, and David Harewood star in the series. Headland expressed interest in working on the Star Wars franchise by the end of 2019, and was developing a new series for Lucasfilm by April 2020. She wanted to explore the franchise from the perspective of the villains. The title was announced in December 2020. Filming took place at Shinfield Studios in Berkshire from October 2022 to June 2023, with location filming in Wales and Portugal.The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, with its first two episodes. The following six episodes were released weekly through July 16. Being out on a headland is an experience as fresh as it is freeing. Fresh because these steep craggy places resound continuously, without end, with the effects of ocean and wild weather. Freeing, because they let you feel with all your senses, the reality of the world. A world seven tenths covered in water. Like bathing in forest sound created by the micro-turbulances of air moving through countless leaves and branches, a headland soundscape is also formed from panoramic layers of natural white noise, created by the movement of water over countless rocks. Or should we call it white sound? Noise is usually associated with what is unwanted. These noises are wanted. So good, so therapeutic, that we feel it's worth travelling long distances with the Lento box to find them, and record them. The tricky bit is capturing the layers of white sounds from the landscape when we get to it. Headlands are windy locations, and the noise of wind cuffing in the microphones is what we work to avoid. The sound has to be from the landscape itself, and not from the microphone baffles. Here is another passage of time we recorded earlier this year at the headland in West Looe, Cornwall. Light rain falling delicately, and spatially, onto new green leaves, against a wide panoramic backdrop of well dispersed ocean breakers. It is a night landscape entirely free of human made noise. Between the slow undulating washes, a passing seabird can be heard mid-way through the capture.  * You can hear daybreak from this same location in episode 221. ** Our last four episodes have been *sleep safe*. Time to take in a view. A panorama that changes with the wind and the tide. It's about six o'clock in the morning, and the Lento box has been recording through the night, tied to a windswept tree facing directly out towards Looe Island and the English channel.   The scene has an aural horizon formed of disapated ocean breakers, crashing against rocks far below. Blended layers of panoramic undulating natural white, grey and brown noise. Close by, newly sprouted leaves flutter around the microphone box in fast currents of blustery air. As the gusts subside, a softer, calmer view of the headland is revealed.  There's a fresh bracing feel to this place. Spring birds sing and call. Land birds such as chaffinches, wrens, robins, chiffchaffs and wood pigeons. Some sea birds too, herring gulls and possibly some oyster catchers. It's an exposed location. Unsheltered from the elements blowing in from the vast and empty sea. Unsheltered, and so thoroughly enlivening.

Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was an influential American author primarily known for his contributions to the genres of fantasy, horror, and adventure fiction. This artist, remixer, producer and DJ thrives off the edm bass music scene. She is known to mix all different types of Bass music together to form her own unique sound. Her roots are breakbeats, house, jungle and hip hop. She grew up as a house dancer turned breakdancer who was compelled by the beat. Her roots also run deep with Reggae and dancehall. Over the years a deep love for Dubstep, Drum and Bass and Trap Music formed. Anything Bass heavy and soulful that evokes good feelings is her kind of style. She has released a bunch of tracks. Why did you get into DJing and music production? I love to dance and I'm addicted to good beats. Where do you currently live? Whitefish, Montana. Is that where you're from originally? No, Media, Pennsylvania(outside of Philadelphia). What inspires you to DJ? Heavy and feel good bass vibrations with soothing intricate and dance worthy sounds. What inspires you about electronic music culture? It inspires me in all aspects of life. I love the feeling when there is a big group of people that come together to share the love of a certain type of music. I love meeting awesome people and working with them on new music or dance moves. It inspires me to be more creative and to move my body in new ways. The energy in electronic music really matches my personality and it inspires me to go further in life. What genres are in your mix? Rooted Dubstep, Bass music, Baltimore Club, Trap, reggae. Can you tell us a little bit about it? This mix was deeply inspired by rooted dubstep and bass music. My 2 favorite genres of music. Now that I live here in Montana in the mountains, it has given me the clarity to really dive into what moves me as an artist and DJ. One of my favorite eras of DJing is when I spun dubstep back in 2009. I made an all vinyl mix called DuBlissious with my favorite hand picked records. Still one of my favorite mixes. This is a continuation of that mix, I even reinvented some of the mixes from the first edition. This mix has a lot of melodic feels with deep bass lines delivered in the most beautiful of transitions. I took old school rooted dubstep and mixed it with more present day basslines, keeping it locked around 140bpm. I carried reggae sounding beats throughout. The beauty of these tunes have put me in a trance when I listen back to this mix, really taking the listener on a journey. This mix includes some of my most favorite 140bpm tunes I've produced myself as well as brand new production that I have yet to release. I learned quite a bit of information to pass along to you, the consumer.  In the episode, I get into motor size.  Variable Valve Timing (VVT) motors versus non-VVT motors, suspension, the new Skyline OS Operating System, performance parts, and more.  Hopefully, the info we provide will help you decide which bike is right for you.   SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2024 Road Glide and Street Glide only come in one model which we are referring to as the Standard model.  For the last several years you could purchase a standard model and a special model.  The standard model was more affordable but lacked many desirable items.  The special model cost more but had many upgraded items.  Now, the "standard" model comes with everything the special models of the past had.  The starting price point (chrome finishings) comes in at a price in between what the standard and special model cost.  One thing to note is black finishings and certain colors cost more.  The new "standard" model is a good starting platform to build from.  You can go the performance bagger or the long haul touring route with them.   The 2024 CVO Road Glide ST is an all-new model.  It is inspired by the King of the Baggers race series.  I've been predicting a bike like this for some time.  My prediction was wilder including mid controls for more lean angle allowing an amature racer to take it out on the track out of the box.  The CVO Road Glide ST has many race-inspired upgrades including carbon fiber parts, an M8 121 motor with upgrades, performance SHOWA suspension, radial Brembo brakes, special track modes, and more.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Sally Rodgers from electronic musical duo ‘A Man Called Adam' takes us to the Headland of Hartlepool to explore the landscape, culture and history which has inspired her music. As part of Wintertide Festival, the artists of the area have created installations, art and music inspired by their fishing heritage. We hear about the songs of the ‘gutter girls' – women who gutted herring along the East Coast – which ‘A Man Called Adam' have reworked into electronic soundscapes, to be played along the Wintertide Trail. Sally meets the curators and creatives at work transforming the Headland and learns more about how industry and culture here have been shaped by the features of this coastline. An Alabama couple, Michael Shane Halstead, 44, and Karen Tysinger Halstead, 43, have been arrested and charged with one count each of abuse of a corpse after the severely decomposed body of their 19-year-old son, Logan Michael Halstead, was allegedly found stuffed in a freezer behind their recently vacated home. The grisly discovery unfolded on October 29 when the new owners of the property, who had plans to dispose of the freezer in the yard, found it too heavy to load onto a trailer. Upon attempting to clean it, they were met with a horrifying sight—a hand inside the overturned freezer. Promptly contacting authorities, deputies arrived at the scene at 11:37 a.m. Sheriff Eric Blankenship of Henry County confirmed the arrests and hinted at the possibility of additional charges, including murder, as the investigation is in its early stages. "We're only on day one of the investigation, so other potential charges could still be pending," Sheriff Blankenship stated. The Halsteads were located in Jack, Alabama, approximately 50 miles west of the home, several hours after the discovery. They were transported back to Henry County, where detectives interviewed them. The couple was subsequently booked into Henry County Jail. Authorities believe that Logan Halstead's body had been in the freezer since late August. Shockingly, Michael had confessed to placing his son's remains in a non-working freezer weeks before the gruesome discovery. The confession occurred on October 11, following the couple's departure from the Headland property. However, during a prior police inspection of the freezer, the body was not found. Logan, who had spina bifida and various medical issues, was described in court testimony as having been wrapped in tarps and blankets and placed inside a cardboard box. Michael claimed to have suffered a manic episode, unable to recall the circumstances leading to his son's placement in the freezer. In a bizarre twist, on the same day as Michael's alleged confession, he was arrested by Dothan Police for failing to appear in court on domestic violence charges, spending ten days in jail. The Halsteads, who had been renting the property, moved away without paying rent sometime after August 2023. The landlord subsequently sold the home to its current owners, who made the shocking discovery while cleaning their newly acquired property. Logan Halstead's body has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. They made their first court appearance on Monday afternoon, with a bond of $175,000 each. I used to be quite low on St. Pat's but I have finally realized that there are many ways to be happy on this day of Irish celebration.  I live in a very "unusual" area that has no Irish culture at all.  I am a Celtic performer who must travel quite a distance in order to perform at festivals and events but that is impossible during the week since I work a regular job. I used to be sad to see all of my friends on Facebook singing and playing all week long!  I wanted so much to be with them and enjoying the festivities.  Then I realized that I was blessed to spend that time with my family...making an authentic Irish meal (NOT cornbeef and cabbage) and listening to those same friends on a mountain of CD's.  There are, of course, Irish libations involved. : - ) Now I look forward to the day as it was originally meant to be; a chance to share our faith and our heritage with others."  

"The Cairn on the Headland" is a short story by the American author, Robert E. Howard. First appearing in Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror in its January 1933 edition, the story tells of a troubled historian, who discovers an ancient, shunned cairn on the outskirts of Dublin.

The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier's Lament” I've renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text  -  and have added a verse,  but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words.  The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front. My first knowing about Celtic music was when a highschool girlfriend and her mom took me to the Gasoline Alley pub here in town to listen to Linda Grubb's St Paddy's day show. Let me bring the storyteller to heel, and get to my point. My proposal for the name for the instrumental segment or instrumental only shows would be. "Celtic Reconnect" I'm not a patron yet, but those episodes are the second reason I want to make that happen. I have a small group of co - workers and family with whom I share individual episodes. It been a great way to keep communication open when there is nothing that "needs" to be said. Thanks."
