Louisiana was in the news recently for enforcing each classroom post the 10 Commandments - while their schools are dead last - at 50th in education. Again symbolic band-aids instead of looking at the cause and finding a cure. Some people don't know their vice from sin - and they probably live in Louisiana with that education system! But the culture and the music and the food, it's a walking city vibe, and maybe most importantly it's the people who never give up - hell the Saints won a Super Bowl! Everything good and bad is available in the Big Easy. Not sure if that makes the city better or worse. But I love it, mostly for its past, but also the present, and of course, its constant perseverance. Music; Trombone Shorty, JUVENILE, juu, Louis Armstrong, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Lil' Queenie & The Percolators, Lucid Dreams, Louis Michot, Hurray For The Riff Raff, _Thesmootcat, Wino Willy and loads more. Another new release from The Dear Boys calls for a celebration, who are racking up the 7” post-punk pop singles in the Buzzcocks fashion, proving boys with guitars still need to kick against the pricks. Alynda Segarra returns to SHEROES to discuss their critically-hailed new Hurray For The Riff Raff album The Past Is Still Alive, their journey that is documented in these memoir-style songs, and how the songs and recording of the album took on a whole new meaning following the sudden passing of their father.
Kristin Cavness is the general manager of the Alpine Cowboys, the only truly independent team in the independent Pecos League (the other 15 teams are owned and operated by league). The Cowboys are owned and operated by a locally-controlled non-profit that keeps Alpine's strong baseball history alive. The team plays their home games at historic Kokernot Field, dubbed by Sports Illustrated's Nicholas Dawidoff in 2016 as the "Yankee Stadium of Texas." Cavness gives us a fun behind the scenes look at independent baseball in West Texas. In Part 2, Rex and Craig discuss the Astros' dreadful start, the team's knack for throwing no-hitters and our favorite music releases for the first quarter 2024.Episodes referenced in this episode:34 - If You Take Batting Practice There You're Gonna Have to Fight Rattlesnakes w/ Bill Rogan Links: Alpine Cowboys 2024 schedule -->Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/tT8d3pVUsN-->You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including the books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. Alynda Segarra is the driving force behind the band Hurray For The Riff Raff. After a little more than a year of production, HFTRR released their newest album ‘The Past Is Still Alive' in February 2024. The album serves as a kind of memory box for Segarra, paying homage to both loved ones they have lost and those who continue to support them. Segarra sat down with Vocalo audio and community storytelling producer Ari Mejia and host Nudia Hernandez ahead of their Chicago tour stop to discuss the album and more. Hurray For The Riff Raff is currently on an international tour through May 26, with support from Chicago artists NNAMDÏ and Sen Morimoto. Find information and tickets on hurrayfortheriffraff.com. This interview was produced by Nudia Hernandez, conducted by Ari Mejia and Nudia Hernandez, and edited by Ari Mejia. It originally aired live on 91.1 FM during Nudia In the Afternoons on Thursday, March 14. Keep up with Hurray For The Riff Raff on Instagram @hurrayfortheriffraff.

Alynda Segarra makes music as Hurray For The Riff Raff and they are my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. I've been really loving Alynda's new record The Past is Still Alive so we talked about that as well as the surprising nature of grief, ABC NO RIO, songs as monuments, taking lessons from nature, and Blood on the Tracks weather. This was such a great talk with a fantastic artist. Listen and subscribe!

Today Norah is joined by masterful singer-songwriter, Alynda Segarra aka Hurray For The Riff Raff. Though a Bronx native, Alynda found a grounding music community in New Orleans, and through songwriting and performing, they evolved into the passionate and powerful musician they are today. The stillness of the pandemic inspired them to write. You'll hear some of those songs in this episode, and Norah and Alynda come together on a heartfelt Lucinda Williams duet. Recorded 6/12/23. How do we sustain nourishing roots in a time of displacement? This week, guest Alynda Mariposa Segarra invites listeners to examine their relationship to place, comfort, and survival as they discuss their newest album LIFE ON EARTH. Through the art form of music, Alynda holds together the complexities that come with wanting and needing to run away from oppressive systems while simultaneously having to confront what is happening right in front of us. Tapping into these themes, Alynda discusses their work with Freedom for Immigrants, emphasizing the urgency of action and compassion as we work to end systems of detainment and punishment.Winding through the intricacies of making art under capitalism, finding humility in our purposes, and fostering the safe havens of mutual aid, Alynda reminds us of the capacious ability we have to continually queer our culture. Drawing anger and vulnerability together through love, Alynda leaves us with the resounding call to live deeply in this world and to love it hard. Alynda Mariposa Segarra is a songwriter/storyteller who performs under the name Hurray for the Riff Raff. They are a Nuyorican queer artist born and raised in the Bronx, who got much of their musical/political education from the anarcho squatter punk scene of NYC. Alynda spent years as a freight train rider and eventually learned to make music on the street in New Orleans. Alynda has used the craft of songwriting as a tool for communication and protest. They have released 8 albums of music, most recently the critically acclaimed LIFE ON EARTH in February 2022.Join us on Patreon at patreon.com/forthewild for an extended version of this episode.Music by Hurray for the Riff Raff. As broadcast February 21, 2022 with mega power femme bidness to keep your pod castin'. Tonight we open with mega respect for Buffy Sainte-Marie, as the legendary songwriter and fighter for Native American & First Nations rights turned 81 yesterday. Covered by legends of the game, she inspired Joni Mitchell to write her first song, wrote hit after hit after hit, but her solo work was banned on the radio. That's alright though, because she's a legend now not only with fans of the folk genre, but she's like a stepmother to Sesame Street kids worldwide, long live Maria!
