Sitrep hears from someone who played a key part in the journey of King Charles III to his role as commander in chief of the UK's armed forces. Most of the King's five years as a serviceman were spent as a pilot, but before he stepped into uniform to fly jets and helicopters he learned to fly a twin-seat single-propellor Chipmunk plane. His instructor was a young Flight Lieutenant, Philip Pinney, who tells James Wharton his story training future King to fly, preparing Charles for hands on military service.
‘Confessions of a Flying Instructor: Teaching the RAF's Fighter Pilots' is Tug Wilson's second book and he joins us to discuss the time in his career teaching new fighter pilots. As always, Tug is great company with Gareth in this sometimes hilarious, and at other times frightening, story of his time as a flight instructor. Tug Wilson grew up in North Yorkshire and in 1985, his dream came true when he joined the RAF. He was selected to fly the mighty Phantom for his first tour. After raging around for three years at the frontline, Wilson became a tactics and flying instructor on the BAE Systems Hawk. Following this, he was extremely lucky in securing an exchange tour with the US Marine Corps flying the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet in California. His final flying tour was on the Tornado F3. ‘Confessions of a Phantom Pilot: Memories of Flying the Phantom FGR2' was Tug's first book. When we do things day after day, with little change to routine, or something that isn't particularly challenging once we become familiar with it, we leave ourselves open to mistakes. When it comes to complacency in Aviation it is dangerous. Not only is it dangerous, but it can be a killer. In this episode I discuss how complacency can creep into our day to day operations and look at several accidents which have occurred as a result.DHC-4 Caribou Fatal Accident YouTubeSIAI SM-1091B Marchetti Fatal Accident YouTubeMarchetti Accident ReportEmail: info@trentrobinsonaviation.com.auFacebook: http://www.facebook.com.au/trentrobinsonaviationInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/trent_robinson_aviationPodcast Episodes: http://www.flighttrainingaustralia.com.auSupport the show

All throughout our training, somewhere along the way are emergency procedure, drills and scenarios. From basic to more complex as we gain more experience, getting these procedures correct and actioned in a timely manner are sometimes the difference between life and death. But are we teaching these drills the best way we can, and are pilots taking them seriously enough? In this episode I discuss the common reactions I see and how pilot's are not prepared for real life emergencies. And are the techniques being used by instructors good enough?Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/flighttrainingaustralia)

Once again I’m proud to represent Army, Navy and Air Force on the Go All In podcast. On today’s show our guest is Scott Bretland call sign “Mez”Our guest today has had an incredible aviation career both in the Royal Australian Airforce and as a civilian pilot. He is a qualified F-111 pilot, a C-130 Hercules pilot, a King Air pilot, Flying Instructor, display pilot and more.Scott was all in on flying fast jets from the age of 5 when he first laid eyes on an F-111 at Amberly RAAF base in Queensland. His mum recounts a cute story: After the first time he saw the jet he declared that one day he would fly one, and sure enough he did.Scott understood and committed himself to doing everything he could to achieve his goal, so you could say that he was ALL IN from the age of 5 in his commitment to become an Air Force pilot. His methodical approach to learning coupled with his deep desire to become a RAAF pilot are truly inspirational.I know your going to learn a great deal from his approach to life and you’re going to absolutely love his stories of tearing a hole in the sky in a pig especially down in the weeds.I’m excited he’s here so please help me in welcoming Scott Bretland call sign “Mez”.
