Aviation current and historical presented by John Skene.
Britain's shoplifters fear David McKelvey. His companies, TM Eye and My Local Bobby, have brought over 1,200 private prosecutions - and never lost a case. Commandeering a commercial force of savvy ex-coppers, David pursues thieves the Police usually let go with a caution - guys who steal steaks from Waitrose and flog them to restaurants, and housewives hawking fake handbags on Facebook. In this wide-ranging and illuminating conversation with Olly, David explains how private individuals can make arrests and bring court cases; answers the criticisms of the system thrown up by the Post Office scandal; and explains why buying counterfeit designer labels from car boot sales is not simply a crime of copyright theft - but the tip of a large-scale operation that can involve child labour, toxic materials, and terrorist gangs… —------------------- Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart enlists the help of former Top Gear presenter Rory Reid to investigate just how environmentally-friendly electric vehicles truly are. Does the intensive production process, and consequences of battery manufacture, have an adverse effect on an EV's eco-credentials? Is the higher upfront cost of going electric justified by the lower running cost compared to petrol? And to what extent does it matter what country you're in, and what their energy mix is? Ollie finds out… The Zeitgeist is supported by DIRTEA, super blends derived from potent functional mushrooms. Get 10% off your first order with promo code MANN at dirteaworld.com/mann —------------------- Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox takes to the skies in a ‘very forgiving' Microlight, returning just in time to discuss a letter from an anonymous Mannfan experiencing insecurity about his small penis, and intense jealousy about his partner's past sexual experiences. What societal pressures or personal triggers lay behind this sudden self-doubt? How best to communicate his feelings with his apparently blameless wife? And just how important is penis size when it comes to sexual satisfaction in a straight relationship? With the help of psychosexual and relationship therapist Silva Neves, and Lynsey Murray, of Relationship Matters, Texas, Alix has the answers… If you have a relationship question for Alix, reach out via the Feedback page of our website, modernmann.co.uk —------------------- Finally, our Record of the Month sees the triumphant return of Modern Mann favourite Griff, with her ‘heartbreak' choon, Vertigo, out now. —------------------- If you enjoy the show, please do SUPPORT US! In this episode I talk to Ricky de Agrela, the first man to ever travel to all the continents in the World using only a Microlight. He speaks about the great memories, of the adventure and also the tragedy that struck during his trip, when his close friend Allan, lost his life to the cause. We follow Ricky's story to see where he is now years after his big adventure. Ricky still travels the World and helps young adventurers find their way in travelling responsibly. In the last episode of 2019 we go back to the stars of The Two Thousand Feet Podcast's most popular episodes and ask them about their plans for 2020. We also look back at the main UK general aviation news of 2019 - and at some of the fun this podcast has had at airfields across the country. Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
2019 has been the year when even the sceptics accepted the need to do something about climate change.Among environmental activists, aviation has become a dirty word. Their figurehead, Greta Thunberg, famously chose to sail across the Atlantic, rather than fly.But how bad is aviation's contribution to the global climate crisis? And what is the solution? Should we all be going electric?Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
We go behind the scenes at Southend's Air Traffic Control to understand how controllers work and to ask them about LARS, infringements and instructions to remain outside controlled airspace. And a visit to Weather School shows that few pilots remember their PPL meteorology - which is, perhaps, only natural. But how much of a problem is it?Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
The Light Aircraft Association and the British Microlight Aircraft Association are proposing a merger. What will it mean for pilots? Will microlight owners be treated as poor relations in the new organisation? Will flexwing operators lose support and expertise? Steve Slater, CEO of the Light Aircraft Association, answers some of the most challenging questions around the merger. At Charlton Park where you land and park your aircraft right in front of a 17th century manor house, visiting pilots are sometimes greeted by the landowner himself, Lord Suffolk. We went to see him and talk about the history of his estate and the airfield.Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
The flying season is all but over. So what can a pilot do on a rainy, miserable day in October? There are more options than just hibernating. I meet people who fly radio-controlled models capable of amazing tricks and explore one of the most niche bookshops in the country. Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
You may not know this about the Dark Lord, but he is in fact a qualified and very proficient microlight pilot. It all started in rather strange fashion though as you're just about to find out.
Do flexwings have a future in the 21st century? I ask Andrew Cranfield, former owner of P&M, Geoff Weighell, Chief Executive Officer of the British Microlight Aircraft Association, and some pilots. And my wife and I speak to Dr. Drew Tarmey, from the Manchester Medical School, about why she suffers from air sickness, and what can be done about it. Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
I spend a day at Old Sarum trying to figure out what the future holds fot the legendary WW1 airfield. And I meet The Flying Reporter, one of the leading aviation YouTube personalities, to ask him what it takes to run a successful YouTube channel about private flying. Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
I get up in the middle of the night to see some flying bicycles; and Nushin Elahi explains why women sometimes feel uncomfortable in the macho, spanner-wielding world of microlight flying. Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
We go behind the scenes at the Battle of Britain airshow. How do you run an event like this? What goes into preparing to fly formation? How do you commentate? What happens behind the closed doors at the pilots' briefing? And if you wanted to set up an airshow, how would you do that?I also talk to Mark Garner, who bought the Thruster brand, but then closed the doors on it. What went wrong? And what does his experience tell us about the future of microlighting? The British Microliight Aircraft Association offered a response.Support the show (http://patreon.com/2kft)
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first non-stop Transatlantic flight, I go to Ireland to look at flying boats and to fly a 737 simulator. And I talk to James Ketchell, who is flying his gyrocopter around the world. He describes flying in Russia (a flight plan just for doing circuits, anybody?) and counting whales in the Bering sea. There was a problem with the previous audio file for this Episode so it is being re-released with a fixed audio file. This week I interview . This is the fourth episode of what will probably be several episodes where we discuss the tools, materials and techniques of glass reinforced laminate's with Louis Martins a long time listener and boat builder located in Lisbon Portugal. In other words he is teaching us how to lay up graphite or fiberglass using mostly polyester or epoxy resins and fiberglass repair techniques. If you buy or build a boat you're going to need to learn these techniques and while it's better to actually watch videos on this topic. Here you can at least get a head start in the terminology and the thought process of learning to use epoxy reinforced fiberglass, graphite or Kevlar and also using polyester resins with the same materials. This week we concentrate on Fillers Here is some information for web sources for this: Interguard 821 Filler http://www.international-marine.com/products/info/intergard-821.aspx http://www.international-marine.com/PDS/194-M-eng-A4.pdf International Watertight Filler http://www.yachtpaint.com/gbr/diy/products/fillers/watertite.aspx http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PfW9ChSbKU Bondo http://bondo.com/ 3m Acrylic Filler https://www.amazon.com/3M-05096-Acryl-Green-Spot-Putty/dp/B004BZOTQQ http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_Catalog/Fillers/fillers.html West 407 Low Density Filler, a blended microballoon filler used to make fairing putties that are easy to sand. As part of the build up to doing a round the world flight Jon Hilton told me that he wanted to fly his CT microlight to Canada and back. Jon set off in May of 2013 and went from the UK to the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland and on to Canada before turning around and doing the same thing in reverse. His entry in the log book in the tower stood out alongside the usual 'Sleaps, Caernarfons and Welshpools'. I'm sure the book has rarely seen an entry such as, 'Canada, via Wick'!
A trip to the Light Aircraft Association Rally to see what's new on the GA scene here in the UK. I talk to various aircraft manufacturers and importers including Grass Strip Aviation, Red-Air, Sprite Aviation, Dragon Aviation, The Light Aircraft Company and Swift Aviation.
A chat with many of the exhibitors at Popham. We talk to everyone from the SSDR manufacturers to the importers of some of the hottest hot-ships in the world of microlighting.
At the Flying Show last year I met a chap called John Laity on the P&M Aviation stand. John is one of the founders of Flying for Freedom which aims to train injured ex-servicemen to fly microlights as part of their rehabilitation into civilian life. In addition, Flying for Freedom are launching an expedition to the south pole where they'll be trying to get a team to fly flexwing microlights to the pole and back. I caught up with John via Skype recently, just after his return from the press launch at the Tower of London.
An interview with BMAA Chairman, David Bremner. David explains what the organisation does and how it works to promote and regulate microlighting in the UK.
Jon Hilton is an adventurous pilot, currently flying a CTSW out of Barton Airport, Manchester. Having read a couple of Jon’s reports in the BMAA’s monthly magazine he sounded like a prime candidate to appear on the Podcast. He started out completing his PPL in the USA, in his early twenties, and went on to get his night, multi and IMC ratings. After taking a break from flying Jon came back to aviation but this time chose to fly microlights, buying a CTSW a couple of years ago.
