Pilot shortages in the aviation sector has some sounding the alarm, concerned that flights could be grounded in four years. There are calls for the Government to intervene, to encourage more young people to pursue the profession. Ardmore Flying School Chief Executive Irene King told Ryan Bridge the financial strains are to blame, with their income not keeping up with costs. She says they're trying to operate with the same income as in 2013. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

7 Things You Haven't Noticed During FlyingSubscribe: https://thingsyoushouldknow.supercast.techFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/879254746173653Next time you fly, take a closer look at the window and you'll notice it has a small hole in it. Don't worry – it is designed that way. It's called the bleed hole and it's there because the air pressure at high altitudes is much lower. Inside the airplane, the pressure is kept at a higher level for passenger safety and comfort. If there was just a single pane, the stress on the window would be too much, so in fact, it consists of three-layered pieces of acrylic, the middle of which has that hole. The bleed hole ensures the pressure can balance out within such a confined space. It also helps prevent the windows from misting up so you can see the view.Dimming the lights for a night flight takeoff or landing is actually pretty important. By matching the dark cabin with conditions outside, passengers wouldn't have to wait for their eyes to adjust in the event of an emergency evacuation. Keeping the window blinds up also helps cabin crew to keep tabs on what's happening outside the plane should that become important.Mood lighting is also increasingly popular. Old-fashioned fluorescent lighting wasn't good for beating the effects of jetlag. However now, flight attendants can adjust LED lighting on newer planes such as the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to mimic sunset and sunrise, helping our bodies to cope better with the changing time zones on long haul flights. Icelandair went one better with thisNorthern Lights display inside the cabin.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Start for FREEDisclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Bessie Coleman was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native-American to hold a pilot license. She was born on January 26, 1892, the tenth of thirteen children of George Coleman, whose grandparents were Cherokee, and Susan Coleman, who was African-American.At the age of 23, Coleman moved to Chicago, Illinois and took a couple of jobs at the same time, to save money in hopes of becoming a pilot. On November 20, 1920, she traveled to Paris and could earn her pilot license. In 1926 Bessie Coleman's dream of opening a Flying School was finally within reach, and she was finally able to buy her own plane. Then, tragedy struck. On April 30, 1926, while preparing for an upcoming show in Jacksonville, she was killed in a flying mishap. BlackFacts.com is the Internet's longest running Black History Encyclopedia. With special guest: Michael Molkentin… in conversation with Bill Kable If we are looking for a genuine Australian hero then we need go no further than South Australian Sir Ross Macpherson Smith born in 1892. After he volunteered to enlist for the First World War Ross Smith had a very full but tragically short life. His first experience of war was to wade ashore at Gallipoli, not in the first wave on 25 April 1915 and not on a horse as he might have expected having joined the 1st Light Horse Brigade as an excellent horseman. His early experience in the War was mostly as an infantry man although he did have one engagement mounted on a horse. However he found his real interest was in the then new-fangled airplanes operated by the Australian Flying Corps (a forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force). Ross started off as an observer sitting in the back of a two seater bi-plane where he quickly established a reputation as one of the best. From there he was accepted into Flying School despite not having the usual social class required of British flyers. After only 14 hours flying he went solo and became what we would later describe as a flying ace with the number of enemy aircraft that he brought down in dog fights.Listen Now (mp3)
