We have a really powerful conversation today from a second time guest—Dr. Steven M. Gillon is back to talk to us about the U.S. presidents who served in World War II (there are seven of them!) and what that service meant to their lives. The last time Steven was here, we were talking about his friend JFK Jr.; today we're talking about Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush 41 and how their service in World War II impacted them not just personally, but as president. If you do the math, Eisenhower took office in 1953 and George H.W. Bush left office in 1993, so that's 40 years of the presidency shaped by this war. Today on the show Steven talks about the long shadow of World War II; which president's war experience most stood out to him; how the men's experiences in war differed, from Eisenhower as a general down to a teenage Bush; the power of service, either in war or in political office; how the war shaped them as men and as leaders; how their experience in war would later affect their foreign policy when president; the bond that serving in the war brought about amongst these men, even if they were political opponents; and so much more. Steven's book, called Presidents at War: How World War II Shaped a Generation of Presidents, from Eisenhower and JFK Through Reagan and Bush, is out February 18, just in time for President's Day the day prior. Steven is professor emeritus at the University of Oklahoma and a senior fellow at the Miller Center for the Study of the Presidency at the University of Virginia. He spent over two decades as scholar-in-residence at The History Channel, where he hosted shows, produced primetime documentaries, and consulted on projects. He is a New York Times bestselling author who has written more than a dozen books about modern American political and cultural history, including the bestsellers America's Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr. and The Pact: Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and the Rivalry That Defined a Generation. I am so excited to have him back with us. Presidents at War: How World War II Shaped a Generation of Presidents, from Eisenhower and JFK Through Reagan and Bushby Dr. Steven M. Gillon

As we continue our series on John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Lauren Bessette to honor the 25-year anniversary of their tragic deaths in a July 16, 1999, plane crash, we are going to be talking to people that knew the victims—and I truly want to thank each and every one of them for their courage in talking about them. As I told each of my guests in our pre-show, I know that, to them, these aren't just celebrities—these are real people and real friends who they loved and lost, and I am so thankful that they all, first of all, shared their stories in the pages of a book, and then, later, with me on this show. Thank you all for having conversations with me.   Today on the show we have Dr. Steven M. Gillon, author of the 2019 book America's Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr. Dr. Gillon is a leading historian and scholar who was also a close friend of John's, and I ask him what it is like to examine John from both a historic lens and a deeply personal lens in this book. In America's Reluctant Prince—which is a great title, by the way—he not only shares his own experience, but also shares exclusive interviews and information from previously classified documents about John's life, from before his birth until the day he died 25 years ago, a full picture of, as the book puts it, John's “complicated and rich life.” Dr. Gillon is the scholar-in-residence at the History Channel, a professor of history at the University of Oklahoma, and senior faculty fellow at the Miller Center for the Study of the Presidency at the University of Virginia. Before his current academic appointment, he spent nine years teaching history at Yale and three years at Oxford. He is one of the nation's leading experts in modern American history and politics, and his articles have appeared not just in academic journals but also in outlets like The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Daily News, and The Chicago Tribune. Over the past decade, Dr. Gillon has hosted a number of shows on the History Channel and has also served as the main narrator and executive producer for a number of History Channel and A&E documentary specials, including many about the Kennedy family; he also served as the chief consultant on the History Channel's eight-hour series, The Presidents. Dr. Gillon frequently contributes to HuffPost and has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News as a commentator and expert on issues related to modern American history, and has written or edited nearly a dozen books, including The Pact: Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, and the Rivalry That Defined a Generation and the book we are discussing today, about his dear friend John, who he met while at Brown—they met when Dr. Gillon gave a lecture to a class that JFK Jr. was taking about none other than John's father, President John F. Kennedy. What a way to meet and begin a friendship!   America's Reluctant Prince: The Life of John F. Kennedy Jr. by Dr. Steven M. Gillon

Harry has returned to California, having been seen departing a Delta flight that arrived at LAX at 6.16 PM local time on Wednesday. It's understood that the Prince opted for the Delta service after the British Airways flight he was initially expected to board was delayed by two hours. Accompanied by a single security guard, Harry quickly handled his luggage, placing it in the back of a "Private Suites" vehicle before swiftly getting in to avoid the rain.During a charity event in London, the working Prince William may not have had time for Harry, but he did have time for Tom Cruise. Sky News host Ashleigh Gillon remarked that the Royal Family is opting for privacy regarding King Charles's recent cancer diagnosis, contrasting it with the previous health issue he publicly addressed."A few weeks ago, the whole world was applauding, saying well done to King Charles raising awareness about his last health issue – this one is obviously next level,” she observed.Gillon noted the initial enthusiasm from the British press over the newfound openness, stating, “I think the British press were getting very excited that they were getting this new level of transparency and openness. They thought they were entering a new era."However, she concluded, "But it looks like they are putting down the shutters and deciding that this one is just too private."King Charles is set to undergo "a pioneering and less invasive treatment" in his fight against cancer, with plans to receive "highly specialized" outpatient care in London on a weekly basis. During this period, he will reside at Clarence House, and it's anticipated he will spend the rest of the week at Sandringham in Norfolk for rest and recuperation. A source highlighted the advancements in cancer treatment, noting, "Cancer treatment has come on in leaps and bounds in past years and are smarter than was the case previously. The efficacy and side effects are therefore significantly improved."Despite his treatment, King Charles aims to continue his routine weekly meetings with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, demonstrating his commitment to his royal duties. Both Downing Street and Buckingham Palace have publicly acknowledged a recent discussion between the two, underscoring the King's ongoing engagement with state affairs. These weekly meetings with the Prime Minister are expected to resume in person on February 21, a little over two weeks following the announcement of Charles's diagnosis. Should health concerns or medical advice necessitate, these sessions, as well as privy council meetings, might take place virtually to accommodate the King's condition. To reduce the risk of infection during his treatment, the King's public engagements have been temporarily deferred. In his stead, other royal family members, including Prince William, are stepping forward to fulfill public roles.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know my love for beer is only rivaled by my love for cooking. Cooking is not only a therapeutic experience but a creative outlet . When I'm not in the kitchen, I'm probably watching cooking shows. Without a doubt, MasterChef is my favorite, and I've been hooked since its first season. I was delighted this year when two people from the beer industry impressed the judges enough to earn white aprons and compete for the title of MasterChef. I was beyond ecstatic when Grant Gillon, a sales rep from Kinship Brewing Co, made it to the finals and eventually won the competition. He rose above his competition by showcasing his Italian heritage and his passion for beer.   Grant and I share a love for cooking and beer, and we both believe that craft beer has a place in the world of fine dining. In this episode, we delve into  what meal or menu prep looks like when beer is involved. You'll hear Grant share two of the most significant lessons he learned from cooking in the MasterChef kitchen. He also provides tips for learning how to cook with beer and offers advice on getting your kids involved in the kitchen. But the common thread in our conversation? His love for Iowa.
