Mention the word gladiator and you would be forgiven for instantly thinking of the 2000 namesake epic movie. Of spectators watching on as men battled each other with a variety of weapons, sometimes to the death, for the entertainment of the crowd. But did women also fight as gladiators? Was the gladiatrix a thing? The references are rare and vague and much debate still surrounds this topic. Malini Sarma is the host of Gladiatrix.  It is about women gladiatrix, which is women warriors who have won over their trials and tribulations to get past their fears and chase their dreams.   These women are strong despite being told that they are not.  Malini was raised born and brought up in India.  She came to the United States over 30 years ago to do her master’s degree.  Malini was already married because no self-respecting parent would ever let their young daughter leave the house, forget the country, all by themselves.  When she came to this country, she was miserable because she knew no one.  She did not know the culture.  She was married but had no idea how to live with a man because She had never left her father’s house.  Her marriage was kind of arranged because the family knew one another, but other than that there was nothing else to tie them together.  Once she came to this country it was more about survive, with a new country and a new man.  At that time, she could not even cook.  When she saw an electric stove, she said to herself, “what the heck is this!” It was rough!  She cried every single day for an entire year.  Fast forward 30 some years, and she is married with two grown children, and podcasting to tell the stories of women just like her, who have successfully conquered their trials and tribulations, no matter the situation.  Don’t forget to get your listening gift at listeninggift.com You can contact me at Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram at CoachTerrilynn You can be a guest on the podcast by filling out the quest profile form

The Lesbian Review Podcast 10 Lesfic Women Who Will Kick Your Ass     In this episode Sheena is Joined by Brooklyn, fellow reviewer and all round awesome person, and we are talking about 10 lesbian fiction women who will kick your ass.  We love reading action, adventures and other books with awesome heroines who can get some serious stuff done. So we decided to go through some of our favorite kick ass characters.    Sheena’s List  1 Ruby from The Only Way by Jamie Sullivan  The Only Way is set is a bleak, poverty stricken world.  The city holds the wealth and opulence of those with too much money and no caring for anyone else. Next to it is the alley, a sector much poorer than the city but a veritable palace in comparison to the Gutter where the poorest residents live.  Each section is blocked off from the others with security guards, fences and gates that need passes. Our main character, Heart, lives in the Gutter. To make ends meet her father is a fighter. Fighters earn more than many of the residents who pick up bits of metal and thrown away appliances that have landed in the trash heap. Fighting is dangerous, though and when her father doesn’t come home from a fight she had to figure out how to keep her family alive. Her mother was injured in a work accident and is not healthy enough to find work, even if there were jobs available, and the oldest of the three younger siblings is only twelve years in age.  She looks for work, but knows that she will only find work on her back. In a desperate bid to feed her family she cuts her hair, pretends to be a boy and enters the world of no-holds-barred fighting.  Initially she is dismissed by Arena owners until one man decides to give her a chance and takes her on to train her. It is at his Arena, in the Alley, where she meets his daughter, Ruby.  Ruby trains Hart to fight and they develop a strong friendship. Dinah finally comes of age as a crime fighter as she must free Huntress who's been captured and forced to fight for her life in an underground arena. With a slight nod to 1999's Fight Club, the episode clearly influenced 2013's Raze starring Continuum's Rachel Nichols. Feeling her oats, Dinah challenges Helena to a fight, but eventually the two are paired against each other in the ring while Barbara and Reese fight to free both of them.
