Kirkland's family of origin was a difficult place to grow up. Alcoholism was rife and the cause of constant stress and chaos. Wracked with fear and isolation, he inevitably turned to alcohol and marijuana for solace. It didn't take long for the disease of alcoholism to take hold and thrive. Kirkland's subsequent use and abuse of alcohol and grass throughout high school and college affected every area of his life. By the time he was in his mid-20s and early 30s, he was gradually losing his ability to be a functional alcoholic. Despair from that realization, plus periodic bouts with depression and suicidal ideation, finally overwhelmed him. His moment of clarity and divine intervention appeared in the form of memories of his late grandmother and her words of wisdom to him earlier in his life. He reached out to a friend, who brought him to his first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. Seeing former friends and business colleagues in the rooms did much to bolster Kirkland's early commitment to sobriety. He quickly found a sponsor and by three months, he'd already completed his 4th step. He finished with his steps by the end of his first year and continued active involvement in meetings and in the fellowship. With amends to his parents made along the way, Kirkland discovered the freedom and peace that accompanies the willingness to do the work. To this day, and certainly in the interview, he exudes a quiet confidence and enthusiasm for the Program. Kirkland's story is one I think you'll enjoy listening to. It speaks to the gifts of hope and redemption available to those who are willing to embrace the AA way of life. So, please enjoy the next sixty-five minutes with my friend and AA brother, Kirkland V. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series and my Big Book podcast, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with Oh, Canada director Paul Schrader. Oh, Canada is currently in select theaters, courtesy of Kino Lorber. In an unvarnished, commanding performance, Richard Gere plays Leonard Fife, a celebrated political documentarian who has reached the end of his life. Wracked with cancer, Leonard has agreed to appear in a film by a former protégé (Michael Imperioli) in the hopes of setting the record straight about himself. Cinema becomes a confessional space as Leonard, accompanied by his stalwart wife and former student, Emma (Uma Thurman), excavates his own past, facing down regrets and guilt, and interrogating his own career, personal life, and political courage. Constructed with nonlinear flashbacks featuring Jacob Elordi as a young Leonard, the film passes in and out of different time periods, back to the 1960s, matching the slippery consciousness of its storyteller. Adapted from the book Foregone by Russell Banks, Paul Schrader's emotionally naked drama feels like a direct address to the viewer, a filmmaker's reckoning with his formidable status and persona. This conversation was moderated by FLC Senior Director of Programming Florence Almozini.

Last we left off on the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests got themselves into a bit of a pickle. Early in the day, Tanaka had come calling saying that their presence was requested. Upon exiting the wagon, they discovered their home had been surrounded by a contingent of Redguard soldiers. Tanaka introduced the Chief Advisor of the Shogun, Okazaki, and then slipped into the Redguard ranks. The Chief Advisor demanded that the Shogun's amulet be given to him or else. The Tempests chose "else". A very one-sided battle ensued that ended with them kidnapping Tanaka and escaping in their wagon home. After a very thorough scolding from Tanaka, they let him go free. Wracked with guilt and confusion, Kasumi declared that they would be returning in the morning to turn themselves in.   A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. This episode was originally released on August 18th, 2018. The Sugars have been thinking about what it means to say goodbye and let go. In this first episode of our two-part series on moving on, the Sugars and Claire Bidwell Smith answer two letters from people struggling to move past their grief after the death of their loved ones. The first letter comes from a woman who recently discovered that her best childhood friend died by suicide. In the wake of the news, she spent hours pouring over letters from her friend, and realized that there were signs of trouble early in life. Now she's haunted by the fact that she failed to intervene years ago. “I keep ruminating on how Alejandra might have killed herself and where she was when she did it,” she writes. “I feel so much guilt from my complacency.” A second letter writer, who calls herself “Wracked by Guilt,” feels similarly about the death of her mother. “How do I get over the sickening feeling that I played a role in my mom's death?” she asks. “How is it possible for me to stop trying to place blame and simply accept the situation?” Claire Bidwell Smith is a licensed therapist specializing in grief, and the author of several books, including “The Rules of Inheritance.” She writes and speaks about grief regularly, and offers online grief support in addition to her private practice. Her new book, “Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief,” will be released on Sept. 25th.

Wracked with guilt over having created the technology used in the FOH’s dampeners, Forge tries to make amends by assisting Storm in regaining her control over the weather. The episode delves into Forge’s past through flashbacks, revealing a younger version pressured by the government to build these mutant-suppressing devices. As they work together, a sense of connection grows between Storm and Forge, hinting at a potential romance. A Budding Romance and Unexpected Feelings While Storm grapples with her powerlessness, we see a sweeter side of Jubilee’s personality. Her interactions with Sunspot (Roberto da Costa) suggest a budding romance blossoming between the two mutants. However, a new wrinkle appears with Forge. His interactions with Storm suggest a deeper attachment, potentially setting the stage for a love triangle in the future. More Villains Unveiled The episode’s true antagonist finally steps into the light: Mister Sinister. It’s revealed that he’s been manipulating the FOH from the shadows, likely with the intention of using them to capture and potentially experiment on mutants. This adds a new layer of complexity to the situation, making Mister Sinister’s goals a central point of future episodes. A Daring Choice? “Lifedeath – Part 1” ends on a suspenseful note. Forge reveals a potentially risky method to restore Storm’s powers, leaving her with a difficult decision. The episode concludes without revealing the nature of the risk, leaving viewers eager to find out if Storm will take the chance and what the consequences might be. Invincible (Amazon Prime) Episode 8 – “I Thought You Were Stronger” Out of 5 Mark Takes a Bloodbaths Darryl: 4.15/5 Brian: 4.85/5 Season 2 Part 2 Out of 10 You Will Conquer Earths Darryl: 8/10 Brian: 8.8/10 Invincible’s season 2 finale, “I Thought You Were Stronger,” throws Mark Grayson (Invincible) into a chaotic journey across realities. Angstrom Levy returns with a vengeance, fueled by his grudge against Mark and boasting some serious upgrades. The fight takes them on a wild trip through the multiverse, with Mark witnessing alternate versions of himself and even encountering an alternate Guardians of the Globe team. The episode explores the emotional weight of taking a life. After Levy threatens Debbie and Oliver, Mark loses his cool and delivers a brutal beatdown, ultimately killing Levy. This act weighs heavily on him, forcing him to confront the brutality of his powers and the potential path he could follow if he loses control. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Nolan Grayson (Omni-Man) shows a glimmer of humanity, expressing regret over his past actions while imprisoned in the Viltrumite penal colony. This emotional vulnerability suggests a possible turning point for their father-son relationship in the future. The episode sets the stage for even bigger conflicts. With the Viltrumite Empire now targeting Earth, Mark and the remaining heroes face a potential apocalypse. Debbie remains fiercely determined to protect her family, even against the overwhelming odds. Ultimately, “I Thought You Were Stronger” leaves viewers with a bittersweet conclusion, as Mark chooses to leave college and embrace his responsibility as a hero, forever changed by the events of this season. Shogun (FX Networks) Episode 7 – “A Stick of Time” Out of 5 The Rock Says Darryl: 4/5 Brian: 4.1/5 In Shogun’s episode 7, titled “A Stick of Time,” the consequences of Yoshii Toranaga’s failed Crimson Sky plan come crashing down, completely reshaping the power dynamics within the ongoing struggle for control. Toranaga receives a seemingly welcome visitor – his half-brother, Saeki Nobutatsu, arrives at Ajiro with a sizeable army. Hope flickers for Toranaga, believing Saeki might offer much-needed support. However, this glimmer of hope quickly extinguishes as a shocking truth unfolds. Saeki’s allegiance lies not with Toranaga, but with the Council of Regents. This unexpected betrayal throws Toranaga’s carefully laid plans into disarray, leaving him vulnerable and facing potential capture. Blackthorne becomes an unwilling witness to this shocking turn of events. Recognizing the danger, he immediately alerts Toranaga, but the information arrives too late. Saeki asserts his dominance and takes Toranaga into custody, leaving his fate hanging in the balance. Meanwhile, Gin, Toranaga’s ever-loyal retainer, prioritizes Blackthorne’s safety above all else. Recognizing the precarious situation, Gin skillfully maneuvers Blackthorne and Mariko towards an escape route. Their fate remains uncertain as they flee Ajiro, leaving their future shrouded in mystery. Within Toranaga’s own family, a tragedy unfolds. His ambitious son, Nagado, sees an opportunity to seize power with his uncle weakened. He makes a bold move, attempting to assassinate Toranaga in a bid to claim his position. However, Nagado’s plan is thwarted by a combination of arrogance and clumsiness. He trips due to his excessively long robe, suffering a deadly head injury. This moment emphasizes the often-tragic and unpredictable nature of ambition, highlighting how even the most carefully planned actions can be undone by unforeseen circumstances. “A Stick of Time” concludes with a tense cliffhanger. Saeki claims he will escort Toranaga back to Osaka to face the Council of Regents. However, Toranaga, defeated and stripped of his power, contemplates his next move from a position of vulnerability. The episode serves as a pivotal point for the season, shaking the foundation of established alliances and paving the way for a high-stakes confrontation between Toranaga and the Council. Today's guest is spiritual director and professor Frank Rogers Jr. who, as a young adult, begin to be deeply tormented by the trauma of suppressed childhood sexual abuse. Wracked by depression, he was on the cliff edge of suicide. From intense despair, he set off on a quest—for answers, for sanity, for a credible God to see him through. We discuss his new book, Cradled in the Arms of Compassion, which details his life story and how he found truly transformational power in the practice of compassion. Rogers shows how he found recovery through a combination of reflective retreats, therapy, creative expression, and an extraordinary application of imaginative meditation, which spiritual seekers and practitioners will find utterly fascinating. The ensuing discovery evolved into the uniquely self-restorative process known as the Compassion Practice. This one made my cry DTM fam! Such a powerful story. https://www.patreon.com/GnosticInformant Thank you existing Patrons. The Etruscans, who lived primarily in the region now known as Tuscany, emerged around the 8th century BCE. They had a significant impact on the early Roman civilization and were eventually absorbed by the Romans. There were also various Italic tribes, including the Latins, Sabines, and Samnites, who lived in the Italian peninsula from around the 2nd millennium BCE. The Latins were the tribe from which the Romans emerged. Starting from the 8th century BCE, the Greeks established colonies in southern Italy and Sicily, an area that was often referred to as Magna Graecia. Aeneas, a legendary figure of both Trojan and Roman mythology, is renowned as the son of the divine Aphrodite and mortal Anchises. A part of Troy's royal lineage and a kin of Hector, Aeneas was a distinguished defender of his city during the Trojan War, demonstrating martial prowess second only to Hector himself. Homer's work subtly hints at Aeneas' discontent with his secondary role, thereby giving rise to a later narrative that posits Aeneas as a conspirator in Troy's betrayal to the Greeks. However, a more prevalent version of his story portrays Aeneas as the helm of the Trojan survivors following the Greek conquest of Troy. Regardless of these divergent accounts, the common thread in all the narratives is the survival of Aeneas, enabling him to be woven into the fabric of Roman mythology. The connection of Homeric heroes to Italy and Sicily can be traced back to the 8th century BCE, coinciding with the era when Homer's epics are believed to have transitioned into written form. Greek colonies, established in Italy and Sicily during this period and the ensuing century, often claimed lineage from figures central to the Trojan War. Aeneas, in particular, was associated with various locales and dynasties, notably within the region of Latium. As the Roman Empire expanded throughout Italy and across the Mediterranean, Roman authors imbued with a sense of patriotism sought to craft a mythological tradition that would simultaneously infuse their land with historical grandeur and subdue an underlying resentment towards Greek cultural hegemony. Aeneas, in his role as a Trojan adversary of the Greeks, and with a post-war narrative open to interpretation, was uniquely suited to embody the mythical precursor to the inception of Roman supremacy. Composed circa 29-19 BCE, Virgil's Aeneid narrates across 12 books the mythic establishment of Lavinium, the precursor to Alba Longa and Rome, by the Trojan hero Aeneas. As Virgil recounts, when the Greeks seized Troy, a resilient Aeneas was instructed by the apparition of Hector to escape and initiate a significant city abroad. Mustering his family and followers, Aeneas secured the penates— household deities—of Troy. However, amidst the chaos of evacuation from the burning city, his wife vanished. Her spirit later appeared to him, revealing his destiny to venture to a land in the west where the Tiber River coursed. Thus began Aeneas's epic journey, with stops in Thrace, Crete, and Sicily, and fraught with a plethora of trials culminating in a shipwreck near Carthage on the African coast. Here, he was hospitably received by Dido, the bereaved queen. As he narrated his tale, they fell in love and he delayed his journey until a stern reminder from the god Mercury refocused him on his ultimate objective: Rome. Wracked with guilt, he immediately deserted Dido, who subsequently ended her own life. Resuming his voyage, Aeneas eventually reached the mouth of the Tiber. #gnosticinformant #ancientrome #documentary #4k #rome #religion --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/gnosticinformant/message

Free Thinking Through the Fourth Turning with Sasha Stone

Trump was nearing the end of a campaign speech for Marco Rubio in Miami, days before the midterms when it started to rain. The MAGA faithful used their Trump signs as makeshift umbrellas. Trump's mic cut in and out. He could barely read the teleprompter.“Is everybody having a good time?” he shouted to the crowd. The answer came roaring back. They were having the time of their lives, even as thunder cracked in the sky and the rain came down in sheets. Covering Trump's head was the red MAGA cap. Trump did something he doesn't often do. He took it off, smiled at the excited crowd, wiped his brow, put the hat back on, and continued his speech.“I'm not leaving,” he said—the crowd roared. Maybe it was the rain, thunder, or something else but I couldn't help but think I'd never seen anything like this. The music he'd chosen to close out his speeches might not always work, but this time, it not only worked, it was some kind of crazy magic. Is anyone else seeing this, I wondered? I have watched all of Trump's speeches since 2020 because I want to know what is true about what's said about him. Most of the time it isn't true. It's the usual delusion meant to drive fear and panic. The music served to raise the drama of the moment. His face soaking wet, his voice strong, I just kept thinking, how is it possible anyone who has gone through what he's gone through still has the energy in him, the fight in him, to stand there, rain be damned. No one there had any idea it was about to come crashing down. They didn't know that the midterms would bring disappointment. They didn't know MAGA wouldn't be delivering that red wave as promised. They didn't know the GOP, Rupert Murdoch, Ben Shapiro, and other high-profile Conservatives would turn on Trump and MAGA or that Mitch McConnell would close the loop by saying “bad quality” candidates frightened Americans. They knew none of this as the music played, the rain came down, and Trump moved them in ways no other politician ever had, at least not in decades. It was captured in time by the only streaming channel that plays all of Trump's speeches, Right Side Broadcasting, and maybe a personal cell phone video. One thing I knew for sure while listening to it, the mainstream media would never report on it. They would never tell the story of that moment in Miami when the rain came down, and Trump stayed.Guess Who's Back?Last night Elon Musk reinstated Trump's account after two years without Trump's tweets. As you can imagine, chaos ensued. Powerful people don't like things taken away from them, and there has never been a more powerful propaganda tool for the establishment Left than Twitter. It belongs to them, they believed, just like they believe America belongs to them. But more than that, they count on Twitter to be the official story of the Biden Administration. A hive mind of Press Secretaries to make sure everyone is on point. They can't afford dissent. They don't mind that there are alternative sites like Substack or Rumble. They know the media only validates Twitter. Musk has taken the place of Trump because nature abhors a vacuum. There is a fundamental need for people to tell the whole truth and to hear the whole truth, no matter how inconvenient it is. Musk's takeover of Twitter has The Machine quaking in its boots. How long before they go after him the way they went after Trump? Probably not long. Matt Taibbi has a great piece on this about witch burnings. Yeonmi Park escaped the fascist regime of North Korea only to come to America and find censorship and suppression of free speech. She is cheering Musk's action to reinstate Trump:Trump's Twitter is important for history. He was our president for four years and used Twitter as his main communication outlet for much of that time. That is also our history. It belongs to the people, even if Twitter is a “private” company. The government co-opted it, creating a filter to violate the First Amendment. Now, they have to contend with Trump's last tweets, which might be tough to help them prove he incited violence on January 6th:Elon Musk is just getting a taste of the Washington machine, the same machine that has been trying to crush Trump and the MAGA movement for six long years. For a minute there it looked like they were going to lose. The scrappy Davids were going to take on the Goliath and win. They were going to win without the big money donors, without the mainstream media but just by hot-footing it door to door, talking to people the establishment government has long since abandoned. The Long ConRegardless of what you think of Trump, there is no good explanation for the ongoing persecution to “find something” to remove him from power, discredit and destroy his presidency because the Administrative State wanted him gone. Trump, or Elon Musk, isn't as pure and innocent as Jefferson Smith in Frank Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But this film, more than just about anything ever written, goes right to heart of the matter. Released in 1939, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was loosely based on the Teapot Dome scandal of the Warren G. Harding administration, which held its place in history as the biggest scandal in Washington before Watergate.Jefferson Smith is appointed to the Senate after the sudden death of one of their cronies. When he first comes to DC, he gasps at the Capitol Dome, the Lincoln Memorial, and the weight of our Nation's founding. He believes in all of it. He's a patriot and an idealist. When the press mocks him for being nothing but a superficial “yes” vote and a puppet of the Senate, he tells Senator Paine, his mentor, that he'd like to write a bill for a Boys' Camp in the wilderness, so kids from all different backgrounds can experience the wonders of the natural world, to spend their lives “like they just came out of a tunnel.”But when his bill threatens a network of corrupt politicians doing the bidding of a powerful oligarch named Jim Taylor, he's warned to step away, say nothing, and become just as corrupt as the Paynes and the Taylors. But Smith, like Trump, is an outsider. He can look at the game with fresh eyes. He defies their demands and tries to expose the graft on the Senate floor. Senator Paine then accuses him of trying to push through a financial scheme for his own profit. None of it is true, of course, but the mechanisms in place are almost exactly what happened to Trump in his four years in power and even the two years after. They hold a Senate hearing to expel Smith from Congress with fake witnesses, fake handwriting experts, and a massive media machine to back it all up. In other words, a show trial like the January 6th show trial. They work a massive PR campaign to demonize and discredit Smith, whose only crime was threatening their hold on power. When Saunders sees that Smith has packed his bags and is leaving town with a broken heart, she encourages him to fight back. And with that, we have the now infamous all-night filibuster where Jefferson Smith, against all odds, attempts to clear his name. But the “Taylor Machine” has the media and corrupt politicians in his pocket, and Smith is no match for any of it. Saunders even tries to enlist a youth army to print their version of what Smith is saying, but Taylor sends out his goons to silence them by destroying their bicycles, hosing down their parades, and derailing their efforts to get the word out.The result is a wrecked Jefferson Smith, who can barely stand by the end of it. But it's when Senator Paine brings in boxes of telegrams from his hometown, proving even those who know him now despise him, that he reminds Senator Payne he once believed lost causes were the only causes worth fighting for. And with that, he finally exhausts himself and collapses on the Senate floor. Wracked with guilt, Paine attempts suicide before hurling himself into the chamber and confessing everything, vindicating Smith. But this isn't a Frank Capra movie. No one is going to confess to what they've done. They're going to play out the long con to the bitter end until Trump is destroyed and the grassroots movement of working-class voters is dead. That's what they want for this country to be like Twitter used to be. All theirs.Trump and MAGA were no match for The Machine. Trump thought he could beat them, that he could give a press conference every day during COVID, and they would appreciate someone who devoted that much time to getting us through a crisis. Instead, they mocked him, cherry-picked everything he said, and painted him as an existential threat. We needed our president during that time of crisis. We needed a country to come together. But to The Machine, their power was more important than anything else, even managing a global pandemic.Nothing would compare to what they did in 2020 and with January 6th. We're not just talking about Trump being a target. His MAGA faithful are now being called “domestic extremists” and treated like enemies of the state. The bogus “seditious conspiracy” charges were like a slap in the face to people who carry around pocket Constitutions and stand in awe of the flag. Now we know January 6th was an FBI operation because of course, it was. How could it not be? From Crossfire Hurricane to the Gretchen Whitmer kidnapping, it was clear they had an objective to bring down Trump by any means necessary. They were willing, and are still willing, to weaponize the DOJ or any major government institution to stop Trump and MAGA. None of this means that Trump can win in 2024. And even if he could, he would only have four years, and they would sabotage him every step of the way during that time. If you want to blow them out of power, pick someone like Ron DeSantis, he will at least have the backing of the establishment Right and all of their deep-pocketed power players that Trump didn't have. Their long con worked. They did well in the midterms. Biden's ugly speeches made him the first president in my lifetime to demonize his own citizens. If you're looking for fascism, look no further than that. Far from being punished for it, he was rewarded for it, so too were the Democrats for their immoral double standard of funding the same candidates they called enemies of the Republic. The truth doesn't matter. That's why they must keep control of Twitter. They want their negotiated truth to be the official story. They want to tell the history of Trump and the movement he inspired to make themselves the good guys. There might have been a moment way back when they actually were the good guys. Their corruption, however, now overshadows any good they ever did. Trump took his place behind the podium at Mar-a-Lago and did the only thing he could do by now to clear his name. He can either let them write his legacy or fight to take it back. He announced he was running for the third time. Of course, they laughed at him. Of course, their machine whirred to life as Merrick Garland announced a Special Prosecutor. Now they have to decide if they will finish the job, their long con, or if they will allow Trump to run again knowing that their machine can beat him.I spent time in Trump World because I knew I wasn't getting the truth about him or his supporters anymore. I know what is true and what isn't. I have been moved by this scrappy group of outsiders who keep fighting no matter the cost. I don't know how they endure, considering they're treated like human garbage, shut out of American culture, mocked, and ridiculed by comedians. I would be lying if I said my heart didn't sink when they lost as badly as they did in the midterms. It wasn't just that I felt bad for them; it's that I've seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Frank Capra believed in the America I believe in. The storytellers in Hollywood used to believe it too. They don't anymore. Emily Dickinson said hope is the thing with feathers. It's so fragile that it can take flight anytime, leaving you with nothing. I don't want to live in an America where the Paynes and the Taylors win. I want hope to be alive, for Smith to win. I wanted to see all of MAGA's efforts were not for nothing. I don't want to see them to lose hope. What can I say, I guess I believe that lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for. We live in a world of constant convenience, where  just about any material need can be met with a simple click of a button or a swipe on a phone screen. But what if this relentless pursuit of momentary pleasures is actually becoming the source of some of our greatest pains? On this edition of KCBS In Depth, we speak with Dr. Anna Lembke, the medical director of Stanford Addiction Medicine. Her new book is "Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence," in which she turns to brain science and the science of addiction to explore the root cause of both pleasure and pain and why it is that this time of instant gratification seems to have thrown our dopamine systems so out of whack. Capes On the Couch - Where Comics Get Counseling

Intro Background (1:25) Emma Frost created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in X-Men #129 (Jan. 1980) Emma Frost born to a wealthy family in Boston, who had lived in the area since the 1600s Discovered she had telepathic abilities while in high school, but refused to join the Xavier Institute, and when her manipulative father chose her as his heir, she opted to leave and make her own way After attempting to seduce her professor, her family had her sent to the Essex Clinic, where she was drugged and manipulated into attacking the X-Men by Magneto Became a stripper for the Hellfire Club, where she made Sebastian Shaw infatuated with her, ending up becoming the White Queen Also started a multinational business, Frost International, and started her own school, the Massachusetts Academy, where she recruited young mutants for her own cause Was attacked by a time traveler and was in a coma for a year - during that time, most of her students were killed - she was brought out of the coma by an energy surge that caused her consciousness to take over the body of Bobby Drake, aka Iceman #BecauseComics - when she learned what happened to her students, she had a breakdown and realized they were better off with Xavier, who was able to reestablish the connection between her body and mind Wracked with guilt, she established her school as Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and she & Banshee started a new team, Generation X After surviving an attack on Genosha, she discovered she had a secondary mutation: the ability to turn her skin to unbreakable diamond - she joins the Xavier Institute, and takes the Stepford Cuckoos under her wing Began a “psychic affair” with Scott Summers, who was growing apart from Jean - although Jean tore through her mind and forced her to relive all her guilty episodes from the past, she revealed to Wolverine that she truly loved Scott Beast discovered her shattered body, and the investigation revealed that Esme of the Cuckoos convinced another student to shoot her with a diamond bullet - meanwhile, Phoenix-powered Jean reassembled Emma After Jean's death, Emma & Scott begin a real relationship, and are co-headmasters of the Xavier Institute Discovered that the Stepford Cuckoos were actually her children, bred from eggs harvested by a doctor years before while she was under the control of the Essex Clinic Served as a member of the Cabal alongside Norman Osborn, Loki, Dr. Doom, Namor, and the Hood, only to betray Shaw In Avengers vs. X-Men, Emma is one of the Phoenix Five - was one of the last two, with Scott, before he was able to wrest her portion away from her, only to be killed by Xavier Inhumans vs. X-Men - after a Terrigen cloud killed Scott, Emma created a psychic projection of him destroying the cloud, after which Black Bolt “killed” the projection - a negotiated peace between the parties ended after Emma incited the X-Men to take action to save their species - Medusa destroyed the cloud, but Emma sent programmed Sentinels after the rest of the Inhumans to seek revenge for Scott's death Currently one of the leaders of Krakoa - named by Xavier & Magneto as the head of trade relations Issues (7:20) Ruby - Relationship with Scott Love for mutants, willing to sacrifice all for them regardless of personal impact (19:23) Role in Inhumans vs. X-Men, where she ultimately is revealed as the villain (27:17) Break (44:10) Plugs for BetterHelp, Popcorn Psychology, and Chris Claremont Treatment (45:26) In-universe - Focus on putting Emma in diamond form and having her work through things without her psychic abilities Out of universe - Work on establishing a rapport with her and determining how to address the various issues and trauma she's dealt with (47:46) Skit (feat. Kris of Marvelous Madames) (57:08) DOC: Hello Emma, I'm Dr. Issues. EMMA: *mentally* And we're starting off with lies. D: *mentally* Excuse me? E: That's not your name and we both know it.  D: Surely, if you've read my mind, you're also aware of the multiple attempts on my life. Not to mention as a mutant you can appreciate the need for a pseudonym to maintain some level of privacy to protect loved ones. Ms. White Queen. Or is it Black Queen? Or Black King? Or Ice Princess? E: Your point is taken. Still, just know that any effort to mislead or lie to me will be swiftly shut down. I do not suffer fools. D: Nor would I expect you to. So, what did you change? E: Come again? D: I'm not gullible. Telepath or not, delving into someone's mind changes the person in some fundamental way. That's the point of therapy. You did that to me without regard for my thoughts on the matter...literally. So, I'm asking you, with all candor...what did you change? E: I'm not an amateur at this, you know. What I told you is what I sought. *pause* Judging by your facial expression, you don't believe me. D: It's fascinating. Sometimes, I mirror expressions, mime voices of those who are talking to me...it's not intentional. I've been in some awkward situations because the person thought I was mocking them. Not this time, though. And you know I'm right. Why are you so skeptical of sessions like this? E: Because those with my abilities already accomplish what you do hundred-fold, without the baggage of “small talk” getting in the way. D: Like a sentience surgeon. I'm glad you're on that path of logic, because society has determined consent to be a MAJOR hallmark of ethics in every interpersonal undertaking. E: Is that what you think I do? Mental assault? D: I'm trying to understand. No offense, but, it's clear that you know how to work a room, regardless of mutant abilities. I'm trying to figure out if it's your main coping strategy, or a backup plan. E: It's been both. D: Can you give an example of each? E: Sure. *mentally* I'll give you a glimpse of one of my best days…*unintelligble speech/sounds* and one of my worst *more unintelligible speech/sounds* So you tell me, doctor. Would you have done anything differently? D: *overwhelmed* WHOA. To be honest, I have no idea. I've been empathetic before, but that was...truly mimetic….no telemimetic...it's like you downloaded parts of your memory into my brain and I choose how to live it...this is so bizarre. *clearly in some sort of discomfort* ugh...they both involve Scott. I shouldn't be surprised. E: Is there a problem, doctor? I can assure you, I did nothing to injure your brain. D: No, not like that…*snaps fingers* THAT'S WHAT YOU CHANGED! E: Oh dear. That was too quick. I expected some sort of opportunity to talk about him at length, without all of the pretense. D: That's my CO-HOST's view, not mine. I'll gladly discuss your feelings about him without referencing *clear pain* AAAAGH!  E: He's not a dick, got it?! D: Got it. The point is, he impacts every aspect of your life, and your love for him affected some...questionable choices. What can I do to help you get to the next stage of your relationship as adults? E: Why would there be a next stage? I know he's loved me. That's all I need. D: And he's loved another. And you turned his ideals into the grandest effigy I could imagine...all out of spite. E: SPITE?! No, having some mental foreplay when you least expect it may have some spite, but not when all of mutant-kind is at stake. It was us or them...and it surely wasn't going to be us. Not when we're the next evolution of the species. I'm not the damsel in distress. I'm the diamond in the rough! I can show you, too. *special effect to change form* D: Fascinating...and now, the therapy can begin. E: What does that mean? D: Before now, you had the ultimate “wisdom of the crowds” through your abilities, just picking things up about each person on a whim. Now, when you're like this, you're shut off. I don't think that's a mistake. Maybe it's a defense mechanism for you, but I see it as a chance for growth. Tell me, what do you feel right now? E: Nothing. D: Can you tell by my face what I think? E: *pause* You have the same face as when I told you I only looked at one thought in your mind...I should register that as the same, but...it's so difficult this way. D: EXACTLY. Welcome to a new way to build your schema of the world. No mind games...just good old fashioned observation, trial and error. No judgement, no scorecard, just me and you, trying to figure out human interaction. I don't expect you to stay this way, but do you realize just how magnificent your personal experiences can be if you learn how to warm up your cold side? E: There is a rationale to your style. I *pause* think...I like it? *transforms again* That is quite the challenge...definitely worthy of pursuit. Fine, your point stands. D: Wait, now I do think Scott is- E: Say it and lose yours.  D: Understood. E: Thank you, my dear. Now if you'll excuse me, I must return to Krakoa. Heaven knows what Logan's gotten himself up to in the past hour. I shall return. D: When shall I - E: *mentally* Oh I'll make it clear. Good day, Doctor. Frida Kahlo: Mexican Icon Trotsky In Mexico Since the death of Lenin in 1924, a power struggle over not only over the Soviet government but also the international Communist movement ensued with the winner Josef Stalin and the loser Leon Trotsky.  But Stalin was not content with merely expelling Trotsky from the party and the country.  His megalomaniac paranoia would subsequently require the physical extermination of his opponent, including Trotsky's family.  Many of Trotsky's relatives, including his first wife and children would be imprisoned, exiled or executed.  Initially expelled by Stalin, Trotsky himself fled first to Turkey, then France, where he was initially offered asylum but subsequently rejected and ultimately Norway, which also eventually deported Trotsky to Mexico Trotsky's Study And Assassination Location, Mexico City In the winter of 1939, Frida would be reintroduced to a Trotskyite sympathizer named Jacques Mornard.  While in Paris, Mornard, who lived in the French capital at the time, claimed that he was moving to Mexico City and aggressively asked her to help secure him a home near hers and an introduction to Leon Trotsky.  She refused, explaining that she and her husband had had a falling out with Trotsky and suggested he find a residence on his own.  Mornard eventually made his way to Mexico, accompanied by his American girlfriend, Sylvia Ageloff, a trusted member of Trotsky's inner circle.  It would take months, but Mornard, who routinely dropped Sylvia off at the Trotsky compound and did small favors for the entourage eventually ingratiated himself into obtaining a personal meeting with the Soviet exile.  Ostensibly, Trotsky was to review a political article that Mornard had written.  In the late afternoon of August 20, Leon Trotsky ushered the younger man into his study and began to read his work.  Unfortunately for Trotsky, Jacques Mornard was actually Ramon Mercader, a specially recruited Stalinist assassin who took an ice axe from underneath his rain coat and plunged it into Trotsky's skull.  Although the blow did not immediately kill Leon Trotsky, he would die of his injuries within 24 hours. Frida Painting In Bed Most of the rest of the decade would be consumed by painting, teaching and attempting to find solutions for the various ailments that plagued her which included a chronically infected hand, her right foot which was troublesome and restrictive, a deteriorating spinal column that was also overwhelmingly painful and even possible syphilis that was diagnosed in the early forties.  However, it would be during this time period that Frida would paint some of her most quintessential works. Frida's Four Poster Bed, Frida Kahlo Museum Frida's degenerative spinal condition would begin to require surgery and a succession of casts designed to allow her mobility.  She would fly to New York in May of 1946 for surgery that would fuse four vertebrae with bone and a metal rod.  Returning to Mexico, she would be placed in a steel corset and remain bedridden for eight months. Frida's Life Mask, Frida Kahlo Museum Frida Kahlo celebrated her 47th and last birthday on July 6, 1954.  Drawings and notations in her diary indicate that however it would arrive, she knew the end was near.  Officially, she would die sometime in the early morning of July 13, from what a doctor officially noted as a “pulmonary embolism.”  Wracked by pneumonia, in constant and excessive pain only dulled by massive amounts of opiates, this certainly would not be a far-fetched prognosis.  However, on the evening before her death she insisted on giving Diego Rivera an anniversary present, despite the fact that their anniversary was a month away.  Later, her nurse would claim that Frida intentionally exceeded the number of painkillers she was supposed to take.  Her final diary entry was both ominous and revelatory:             “I hope the exit is joyful-and I hope never to come back.” La Casa Azul Today, Frida Kahlo Museum
