Malini Johar Schueller unpacks critical race reading and the role of discomfort in the classroom on episode 625 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. Quotes from the episode Racism is a permanent structural feature of American society, and law alone, as now we have it, cannot deal with racism because racism is also part of law. -Malini Johar Schueller Critical race reading takes off from that, and it asks, is there a way of reading… that can awaken us to questions of racial privilege and hierarchy, but without us imagining that we have taken over somebody’s place? -Malini Johar Schueller Critical empathy, where you feel for others and you feel the injustice of others, but you also feel differently, you know, differently. -Malini Johar Schueller Some level of discomfort is fine for learning, because if learning doesn’t produce any kind of discomfort, you haven’t moved outside your zone of what you already know. -Malini Johar Schueller Resources Teaching Solidarity: Critical Race Reading, by Malini Johar Schueller Malini Johar Schueller’s personal site Kimberlé Crenshaw Patricia Williams Disparate treatment vs. disparate impact The 1619 Project Shoshana Felman Pedagogy of the Oppressed, by Paulo Freire Teaching to Transgress, by bell hooks Defy: The Power of Saying No in a World That Demands Yes, by Sunita Sah Jesse Stommel on Episode 320 Journey through infertility (Pudding, March 2026)

Ed Boon, criador da franquia, aparece como barman e dubla o "Get Over Here!" do Scorpion. Ou isso é só porradaria, sangue e nostalgia funcionando?• 05m37: Pauta Principal• 1h20m24: Plano Detalhe• 1h36m16: EncerramentoOuça nosso Podcast também no:• Spotify: https://cinemacao.short.gy/spotify• Apple Podcast: https://cinemacao.short.gy/apple• Android: https://cinemacao.short.gy/android• Deezer: https://cinemacao.short.gy/deezer• Amazon Music: https://cinemacao.short.gy/amazonAgradecimentos aos padrinhos: • André Marinho Moreira• Bruna Mercer• Charles Calisto Souza• Daniel Barbosa da Silva Feijó• Diego Alves Lima• Eloi Xavier• Guilherme S. This episode features a conversation with urban geographer, Malini Ranganathan, and historian, Juned Shaikh, on the centrality of caste to urbanization in India. Through a focus on 20th century Bombay (now Mumbai) and 21st century Bangalore (now Bengaluru), we explored the symbiotic relationship between caste and capitalism manifest in the political economy of urbanization from the heyday of industrial capitalism to contemporary neoliberalism. We also delved into the continuities between rural and urban caste relations as seen, for instance, in caste networks that remain key to the movement of capital from rural land to real estate. In addition to the centrality of caste in shaping urbanization, we also considered changes to caste wrought by its role within urban processes. The final part of the episode shifted to a discussion of oppositional mobilization among the urban poor, from the upsurge of literary and political activity among Dalits in Bombay and Bangalore in the 1950s-70s to the ongoing pushback against the threat of dispossession and displacement by real estate and finance capital. Então, coloque sua fantasia, acenda sua abóbora e venha com o Cinem(ação) desvendar por que o Halloween continua encantando gerações.• 05m35: Pauta Principal• 1h12m31: Plano Detalhe• 1h26m52: EncerramentoOuça nosso Podcast também no:• Spotify: https://cinemacao.short.gy/spotify• Apple Podcast: https://cinemacao.short.gy/apple• Android: https://cinemacao.short.gy/android• Deezer: https://cinemacao.short.gy/deezer• Amazon Music: https://cinemacao.short.gy/amazonAgradecimentos aos padrinhos: • Bruna Mercer• Charles Calisto Souza• Daniel Barbosa da Silva Feijó• Diego Alves Lima• Eloi Xavier• Flavia Sanches• Gabriela Pastori Marino• Guilherme S. We are pleased to share a new podcast episode, which was taken from our September 9, 2025, webinar featuring Malini Mithal, Associate Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Division of Financial Practices. Malini has been a valued guest on our podcast in past years, and this session provided another timely and insightful discussion. In today's episode she gives her thoughts on the FTC's recent non-antitrust consumer protection initiatives. Major Key Topics Discussed 1.     Fintech oversight – Malini began with FTC activity involving fintechs, particularly companies promoting faster access to cash, and addressed related lending and payments cases. 2.     Subscription practices under ROSCA – She highlighted the FTC's enforcement of the Restore Online Confidence Shoppers Act, including lawsuits against Uber and LA Fitness and a settlement with Match. 3.     Unfair and Deceptive Fees Rule – Effective May 12, 2025, this rule bans bait-and-switch pricing and hidden fees in industries such as live-event ticketing and short-term lodging. Malini explained how these practices harm consumers and distort competition. 4.     Auto finance transparency – Another area of focus for the FTC, reflecting the agency's broader emphasis on price transparency. 5.     Debt collection, debt relief, and credit repair – Malini reviewed recent FTC enforcement activity in these high-risk sectors. 6.     Crypto platforms – She concluded with a discussion of the FTC's work addressing crypto platforms that market banking-like services to consumers. After Malini left the webinar, John Culhane, a partner in our Consumer Financial Services Group, provided an update on developments at the FTC in terms of budget and staffing and the ongoing litigation challenging the Trump Administration's removal of two Democratic FTC Commissioners without cause and then discussed areas where we expect to see more FTC “regulation by enforcement” activity. Consumer Finance Monitor is hosted by Alan Kaplinsky, Senior Counsel at Ballard Spahr, and the founder and former chair of the firm's Consumer Financial Services Group. We encourage listeners to subscribe to the podcast on their preferred platform for weekly insights into developments in the consumer finance industry.

From hot flashes and joint pain to brain fog, mood swings, and disrupted sleep, the symptoms of menopause can be physically exhausting, emotionally taxing, and even socially isolating. What makes it harder? We're still not talking about it enough. For decades, menopause has been treated like a taboo subject. Women are often left to suffer in silence, unsure if what they're going through is “normal,” and hesitant to ask for help. But it doesn't have to be this way. There are proven strategies to help you manage symptoms, protect your long-term health, and feel like yourself again.  And some of the most effective solutions are surprisingly simple, starting with your lifestyle. Menopause doesn't have to be a downward spiral.  It can be a powerful opportunity to revamp your habits, strengthen your body, and take charge of your well-being for the next chapter of your life. Is hormone therapy safe, and who should consider it? What simple lifestyle shifts can dramatically ease your symptoms? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Malini Sharma, a board-certified OB/GYN and lifestyle medicine practitioner with a deep passion for helping women navigate menopause with confidence.  She breaks down the symptoms, treatment options, and small-but-mighty changes that can help you feel better, physically, mentally, and emotionally.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -The symptoms no one talks about Menopause has many well-known symptoms, but what are the lesser-known challenges women face?  -The emotional impact of menopause Menopause doesn't just change how you feel physically, it can take a toll on your mental health. What are some of the emotional and social challenges that come with it? -Addressing early menopause Premature ovarian insufficiency affects younger women, sometimes even in their 20s. How do you spot it early? How do you deal with it?  -MHT: safe or scary Hormone therapy has a controversial reputation, but the truth is more nuanced. Who is it right for? Have the risks been misunderstood?    Guest Bio Dr. Malini Sharma is a Consultant Gynaecologist, Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner and a staff physician at the Surgical Specialties Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. In this episode, I speak with Malini Kannan, CEO Office of Thunes, a global B2B cross-border payments infrastructure company. Malini grew up in India and started her career in Singapore, working in research and strategy across a diverse set of sectors. After her MBA from INSEAD, Malini focused more directly on the fintech space, working across the industry and landing at TransferTo, which incubated the business that eventually become Thunes. At Thunes, Malini has covered every aspect of the business - starting as a Strategy & Operations Manager, moving up to COO, and now she leads the CEO Office. Thunes was originally founded in 2016 under TransferTo, which focused on cross-border airtime top-ups and other value-added services. TransferTo rebranded as DT One, where Thunes was incubated. Since then, Thunes has grown into one of the largest and most well-known B2B payments companies in Singapore. They now serve customers in more than 130 countries, have offices in 20 cities, and have closed their $72M USD Series C funding round in July 2023. Corruption Plots: Stories, Ethics, and Publics of the Late Capitalist City (Cornell UP, 2023) illuminates how corruption is fundamental to global storytelling about how states and elites abuse entrusted power in late capitalism. The millennial city of the global South is a charged setting for allegations of corruption, with skyscrapers, land grabs, and slum evictions invoking outrage at deepening economic polarization. Drawing on ethnography in Bengaluru and Mumbai and a cross-section of literary and cinematic stories from cities around the world, Malini Ranganathan, David L. Pike, and Sapana Doshi pay close attention to the racial, caste, class, and gender locations of the narrators, spaces, and publics imagined to be harmed by corruption. Corruption Plots demonstrates how corruption talk is leveraged to make sense of unequal spatial change and used opportunistically by those who are themselves implicated in wrongdoing. Offering a wide-ranging analysis of urban worlds, the authors reveal the ethical, spatial, and political stakes of storytelling and how vital it is to examine the corruption plot in all its contradictions. For many centuries, Hindu temples and shrines have been of great importance to South Indian religious, social and political life. Aside from being places of worship, they are also pilgrimage destinations, centres of learning, political hotspots, and foci of economic activities. In these temples, not only the human and the divine interact, but they are also meeting places of different members of the communities, be they local or coming from afar. Hindu temples do not exist in isolation, but stand in multiple relationships to other temples and sacred sites. They relate to each other in terms of architecture, ritual, or mythology, or on a conceptual level when particular sites are grouped together. Especially in urban centres, multiple temples representing different religious traditions may coexist within a shared sacred space.  Temples, Texts, and Networks: South Indian Perspectives (HASP, 2022) pays close attention to the connections between individual Hindu temples and the affiliated communities, be it within a particular place or on a trans-local level. These connections are described as temple networks, a concept which instead of stable hierarchies and structures looks at nodal, multi-centred, and fluid systems, in which the connections in numerous fields of interaction are understood as dynamic processes. In this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast, I talk with my new friend Mary Malini about her incredible journey of overcoming obstacles and following the call of God in her life. Starting out in a small town in India, Mary's education took her to a 12-year career in mass communication and television production - but her love of dance and art never left her heart.  In time, she felt the insistent pull of the Lord leading her to a whole new season in her life of pursuing her art. By faithfully surrendering to God's will, she was empowered to turn her talents at painting and driftwood sculpture into a successful art business. In our talk, Mary shares how some divine appointments (and a couple of my books!) led her to discover her unique design and how that led her to pursue her passion for art full-time.  If you're struggling to navigate through transitions, find your identity and purpose, or gather the courage to take hold of opportunities that come along, Mary's story is going to really resonate with you.  You can find Mary's unique, fascinating, and beautiful driftwood art on Instagram and Facebook: https://www.instagram.com/the.carpenters.ark/    https://www.facebook.com/thecarpentersark  ====================When you're ready to stop striving and start thriving, here are 4 other ways I can help: 1️⃣ Create Cashflow With Us! - Join us for an exclusive 5-day workshop where you'll learn how to create a personalized plan to create a faithful, reliable income stream in your business!  Get all the details and register here!  ➡️ https://www.artistcashflowbootcamp.com2️⃣ Learn a New Framework for Living: Watch this free 60-minute, on-demand workshop I created called “How to Start Thriving as the Artist God Created You to Be,” where I share a simple, Kingdom-based framework for living that anyone can use starting today.
