John Luther Adams's Silences So Deep: Music, Solitude, Alaska (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2020) is a profound, funny, and enlightening memoir from one of our greatest contemporary composers. Adams describes the process of writing music inspired by the wild landscapes of the far north, pieces with titles like Arctic Dreams, In the White Silence, and Become Ocean. But as much as Silences So Deep is a meditation on craft, it is also a masterpiece of nature writing, reminiscent at times of Walden, at other times of Dharma Bums.  Adams moved to Alaska as a young man in search of the solitude of America's last frontier. But Adams also discovered community: a bohemian group of farmers, poets, activists, and musicians, including the poet John Haines and the conductor/composer/activist Gordon Wright.  Silences So Deep is sure to reward long-time fans of Adams' work and listeners of contemporary classical music more broadly. It will also appeal to nature lovers and to anyone interested in the day to day work of a life committed to art. Andy Boyd is a playwright based in Brooklyn, New York. Kicking The Cans By now unless you have been living on the moon or accidentally got locked up the a cool box somewhere since 1985, Envirotainer the pioneering cool box company from Sweden says it can deliver all the vaccines needed anywhere in the world with no excuses or let up, and its system is the go-to way to move pharmaceuticals, worldwide on short notice. Freeze Dry Vaccines? (Revisited) Now the world awaits a COVID-19 vaccine, reportedly a two- shot sequence, delivery to 8 billion people alongside other therapeutics, that might add another two step that would see that dreaded one-way trip to the hospital turn into a roundtrip. Meantime waiting in the wings is the technique of freeze drying vaccines in a process mostly under wraps for now at Pfizer and others, While this method will not play a large role meeting the immediate need, freeze drying promises big changes ahead for delivery of global medicines. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support

Everything about the church, the Christian and the Christian's lifestyle flows from understanding and living according the Jesus's exemplary life and personhood. These days you can notice that the church is about everything except Jesus. Theologians and pastors are writing books with titles like, "Christ-less Christianity." In our study of the Sermon on the Mount I asked the prayer meeting crowd if they thought that someone embodying Jesus's Beatitudes (MT 5) would ever get elected as President? They said, "No" "Why?", I asked. The answer was "FEAR." They were right. Fear and courage don't usually inhabit the same space. It takes more courage to live by the tenets of the Sermon on the Mount than to retaliate, hurt, slap, shoot, get even, hold a grudge or live with prejudice. My topic is Jesus as healer. The text is Mark 2: 1-12. Jesus cured a paralytic whose friends lowered him through the roof because the house was too crowded. Notice the first thing that Jesus said to the paralyzed man.  Why do you think that was so important?

The lectionary Old Testament text this week is Amos 7: 7-17. We in the church tend to neglect the ancient prophets--especially the ones we call "Minor Prophets." These writers are called minor prophets because their writings are shorter than the major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah & Ezekiel), not because their message is any less important. Prophets make us take a larger vision of how God wants us to live together. There is a personal message, but for the most part these prophets are speaking to the nation of Israel--especially to leaders. It is in these writings that we discover how God wants people in power to act and legislate. We can learn what kind of leaders God wants us to choose. It is a minor prophet, so you can read the book of Amos in 30 minutes. It contains some of the most vivid images of judgment in the whole Bible. As you read, think about parallels with our times. You might also think about the relationship of the church and the state. Why was Amos, a farmer (layperson) in Judah (the southern kingdom of the now divided kingdom of Israel), sent to Israel (the northern kingdom) to proclaim a word of judgement from God? From Amos we might discover how to be objective in our understanding of what God wants from us as individuals and as a nation.

We celebrated Pentecost last week- the fulfillment of God's promise to give his Holy Spirit, the very Spirit of the risen Christ, to the church. Now that we have the full revelation of God through Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, this Sunday is Trinity Sunday. The scripture text comes from John 3: 1-17.  The word "trinity" is not mentioned in the Bible, but it is presented as an experience of the church. For this Sunday you might reflect on your experience of God as Father/Creator, Jesus as Son and Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit as Comforter and Sustainer of God’s Church.

This Sunday is Pentecost, considered the birthday of the Church.  It is when God fulfills his promise, spoken through Jesus to pour out his Spirit on the church.  There are many things that we could say about the Holy Spirit, but one thing is central—the Holy Spirit is Jesus’s presence everywhere and potentially in everyone who acknowledges and makes a primary place for Jesus in their lives.  Acts 2: 1-21 recounts one of oddest days in history.  Some people are gathering for a regular Jewish feast and all of sudden people are speaking and/or hearing the good news of the Gospel in languages that they had never studied and probably never heard before.  We don’t talk much about Pentecost, but it is a significant day in the life of the church.  Our question for this Sunday is the same one uttered by the crowd when they witnessed the strange miracle: “What does this mean?”  Well, how would YOU answer that inquiry of someone considering the Christian faith?

This Sunday's text is 1 John 3: 16-24. In these verses we encounter what might be considered one of the most troublesome words in all of God's inspired word--the little word “if." While not so difficult by itself, in certain contexts it can ruin your day. Verse 17 is the culprit. I won’t print it here so you will read the whole passage for yourself. Question: Do you want to the be the kind of person that wants it said of you, “The love of God really lives in her/him?" Then if you have the resources to help someone and don’t do it, you are negating that claim. Ouch. Just how far do you think we should take this?

This Sunday is sometimes called "Shepherd Sunday." Jesus says in John 10:11-21 that he is the "Good Shepherd." He is placing himself in the role of shepherd just as David saw God's shepherding love in Psalm 23. Those that follow the Good Shepherd then must be sheep. What do you know about sheep?  Not much.  But sheep sure keep the Shepherd busy. We rely upon the Shepherd for food, rest, protection, community and good hygiene.  He takes away our fear no matter where we walk. The Good Shepherd even lays down his life for the sheep.  We are much more familiar with cats, dogs and maybe birds, but sheep?  Not so much.  How much do you depend on God?  What about what the Good Shepherd does for us leads us to thankfulness, sacrificial love and a desire to be transformed?  Where would we be without the Good Shepherd?

Easter is a season and not a day spanning the time between Resurrection Sunday and Pentecost, fifty days after Easter. In his resurrected state, Jesus keeps appearing to his disciples. In I Corinthians 15 Paul lists the number of people that saw Jesus alive after Good Friday--more than 500. Have you seen him alive? Wouldn't you love too? Our text this week from John 20: 19-31 is for us. Jesus keeps coming to his frightened and unsure disciples. Thomas misses the first appearing, but demands a second--and gets it. Isn't there a little Thomas in all of us? Its okay to admit it. What are your most significant doubts about the faith? About Jesus's resurrection? What I get from this passage is that honest and deliberate seekers get the assurance they want and need.

Gordon Wright is the Senior VP and Global Director of HOK’s Workplace Practice. Based in Chicago, he leads diverse project teams that solve clients’ business and organizational challenges related to real estate business process, strategic planning, workplace strategy and change management. HOK has about 1,800 employees across a network of 23 offices on three continents. HOK is a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm. Their mission is to deliver exceptional design ideas and solutions for clients through the creative blending of human need, environmental stewardship, value creation, science and art. Some of their designs include the Atlanta Falcons stadium in Georgia (the first retractable roof of its kind) and the Crick Institute in London, England (used for medical research). Current trends in design: The employee experience – How do we create a space that people want to go? Providing Choices - Giving people just a desk and chair isn’t enough anymore Agility – so people can work anytime, anywhere An attractor – the space attracts people - not only to the workplace but to individual spaces The role of VR and the gig economy in design: Current research says that this generation of workers may have as many as 30 -40 jobs. With that in mind, design of workplaces must be different than at a time when people came and stayed for decades in one job. Those in the contingent workforce, tend to move frequently between jobs. They are more nimble within the organization. So this impacts the design requirements. HOK is currently using virtual reality in mapping out their designs.  This allows clients to have a digital experience of the space before it is actually created. VR mapping is having a significant impact on their current practice. Wright gave some examples of the differences between now and years ago in regards to the workspace. One thing he mentioned was that space used to be very personal. It used to be that, depending on your rank in the company, you would have a private office or a cubicle that was all yours. You could make your surroundings yours by putting personal items such as pictures or diplomas. Now we have communal spaces - so there is no longer the option to personalize in the same way. But it allows people to collaborate more and choose what type of workspace they want for the day, instead of being stuck in one room. Open plan environments have challenges and are sometimes only suitable for some employees. We have now gone beyond just open plans. We have co-working spaces, other amenities, multiple options. HOK has learned that the best workspaces are those in which there is choice. “Choice is the number 1 indicator in how satisfied a person is in their job”, Wright says. So now they have a variety of ways that they can curate a space to provide choice for employees. It can fit the needs of each person. Wright’s advice for managers changing workspace is to pick your design partner wisely. The right partner will work to understand your organization. Also, engage with people within your organization – those that see design is a crucial part of creating a healthy environment His advice to employees is to be open-minded about changes in your workspace.   What you will learn in this episode: What enters into design consideration from start-ups to institutions How AI and the Gig Economy impacts design Workplace trends HOK is paying attention to The importance of understanding your workforce as you design What data HOK looks at when designing an workspace How the industry has changed over the past few decades The impact companies can have on a community

Easter on April Fool's Day? If you haven't looked at your calendar, Easter is in fact on the day that we play practical jokes and pranks on our friends. In the history of the early church some of the most respected theologians advocated that Easter be a time for joy and levity. They even got together and told jokes to make one another laugh "the Easter laugh."  The reasoning was that on Good Friday, Satan and the forces of evil were sure that they had won a great victory--they had defeated and done away with God's Son. But the last laugh was on the Evil one because, God raised His Son in a glorious victory over sin, death and the Devil. That is the reason for our deep joy. Nothing, not even death, can come between us and the God that has loved us with such a wondrous love. Therefore, April Fool's Day is a great day for celebrating the resurrection of God's Son.

Jesus paradoxically speaks of seeds dying to bear fruit, giving life to get life, hating life to find life and all of this is somehow tied to His “glorification."  Jesus will be “lifted up” and by this lifting he will draw all people to himself.  Is this a common understanding of modern glorification? How has God turned our values on their head by having Jesus be glorified by being lifted up on a cross?

Charles Wesley wrote a hymn with the line, “Gentle Jesus meek and mild." Our passage corrects that misperception. What would have made Jesus start tearing up the temple and running people out with a whip? What modern application can we make of this incident?

Gordon Wright, the Alaskan composer, conductor, professor and environmentalist, was John Luther Adams's best friend. When he died suddenly in 2007, Adams wrote three pieces for solo violin titled Three High Places, vignettes representing moments Adams and Wright shared while camping. These pieces eventually led Adams to write his first string quartet, at age 59, called The Wind in High Places. In a process that Adams likens to "primitive man discovers fire," he approached the traditional music form in a way that felt true to his compositional identity. The entire work is built on natural harmonics and open strings, allowing an airy, breathy timbre.  John Luther Adams wrote his first string quartet at age 59 as vignettes representing moments he and Gordon Wright shared while camping, and likens his approach to the traditional music form as "primitive man discovers fire." Download The Wind in High Places as Meet the Composer's first Bonus Track with John Luther Adams. The above audio is an exclusive live recording of this currently unavailable piece, performed recently in the Q2 Music Studios by the dynamic JACK Quartet. A studio recording of The Wind in High Places will come out in January 2015, again with JACK Quartet, on the label Cold Blue Music.
