On this episode of Alabama Politics This Week, Josh Moon and David Person delve into the state of Alabama and national politics, critiquing Governor Ivey's recent address and expressing concern over the influence of unelected billionaires like Elon Musk on government affairs. They discuss the controversy surrounding Beyoncé's country album and the historical context of Black artists in the genre. The hosts also analyze the current administration's foreign policy, particularly regarding the Middle East, and its potential to destabilize international relations. Then, Decatur City Council President Jacob Ladner joins the show to discuss the Stephen Perkins shooting and the subsequent review of the Decatur Police Department. Ladner emphasizes the need for new leadership within the police force, citing communication issues and a lack of visible leadership from the current chief. He also addresses concerns about racial bias, while acknowledging potential socioeconomic disparities in policing, and discusses the mayor's handling of the situation and the upcoming mayoral election. Finally, Josh and David discuss the stalled Alabama medical marijuana program, focusing on legal challenges and legislative attempts to bypass established procedures. They contrast this with the state's approach to gambling, highlighting the benefits of regulation. The conversation ends with a condemnation of racist views expressed by a recent Department of Defense hire, leading to a broader discussion about racial bias, particularly in sports and the NFL's treatment of Black quarterbacks. As citizens of Alabama, each of us has a responsibility to keep an eye on our state government and to make our voices heard. The flip side of that is the fact that many in state government prefer the citizens turn a blind eye to what they're up to at the Capitol. They want you to believe the press releases and stump speeches talking about how great everything is in the state. Indeed, they prefer you to be the dog in the burning house meme where the dog is at the table and the house is engulfed in flames and he says, "This is fine." 1819 News: The Podcast has a unique episode for you this week! A few things have been getting under CEO Bryan Dawson's skin lately. Naturally, he sat down with Joey Clark on his radio show News and Views, which airs on Montgomery's News/Talk 93.1, to air some of those concerns. We thought the “radio rant” was too good not to share! Bryan and Joey's conversation begins with the discussion of Alabama State Health Officer Scott Harris' new appointment as the president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. The public health organization has ties to George Soros and focuses on important topics like “health equity” and “dismantling white supremacy.” This brings out Harris' true colors – we all knew they were there – to the surface and reminds us that he should have been fired years ago. If you recall, Alabama was told Harris couldn't be fired because he was appointed by a board of health professionals and therefore did not serve at the pleasure of the governor. This situation was such a problem that bills were filed in the last three legislative sessions to give the governor the authority to fire the state health officer. Last session one of those bills finally passed. That stands in stark contrast to a recent move made by Governor Ivey to use her “supreme executive power of this state” to unilaterally fire a different state agency head who was also appointed by a board, Rear Admiral Kent Davis, the director of the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. Either Ivey had the authority to fire Scott Harris and refused, or she doesn't have the authority to fire state agency heads like Rear Admiral Kent Davis who are appointed by a board, but she did it anyway. Bryan and Joey's discussion turns from Ivey's actions to the lack of leadership in the Alabama House, Senate, and Governor's Office, which creates an environment where special interests reign supreme. The conversation brought into clear focus the reality that since the Alabama Speaker of the House has been under the heavy influence of political consultant Steve Raby, the House priorities have been an increased gas tax, medical marijuana, and several major pushes for full blown gambling. The last push for gambling included Medicaid expansion. It's unbelievable that these are the priorities of the Republican supermajority of a state House in the most conservative state in the nation! Finally, the “radio rant” ends with harsh criticism of local elected leaders such as mayors, county commissioners, and city councilmen who desperately seek reasons for why they can't do what is right and necessary, and that will allow them to pass the buck. Whether its Haitian immigrants being dumped into their cities or pornographic grooming literature in the children's section of their library, local leaders' mantra is too often the same: "Ain't nuthin' I can do!" Obviously, you'll want to give this episode a listen! Special thanks to Bluewater Broadcasting, News/Talk 93.1, and Joey Clark for allowing us to use the interview. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced on Tuesday that Derrick Dearman, a 35-year-old convicted of a brutal ax murder that claimed the lives of five people, will be executed by lethal injection next month. Dearman, who committed the gruesome killings in Citronelle, Alabama, in 2016, will be the fifth prisoner to be put to death in the state this year. Dearman was convicted for the horrific slaying of five friends and family members of his then-girlfriend, Laneta Lester, during a methamphetamine-fueled rampage. Among the victims was a pregnant woman, Chelsea Marie Reed, and her unborn child. The massacre took place in the early hours of August 20, 2016, after Dearman broke into a home in a remote area of Mobile County. Earlier this year, Dearman dismissed his legal counsel and halted all appeals against his conviction and death sentence. In a phone interview from death row, Dearman stated, “I've decided to drop my appeals and have my sentence carried out… I was fairly tried and convicted. I agreed with the court's decision. Whether I was in my right mind or not, innocent lives were lost and the crime was committed.” Governor Ivey revealed that Dearman will be executed between midnight on October 17 and 6 a.m. on October 18. He opted for lethal injection over nitrogen hypoxia, a newly introduced and controversial execution method in Alabama. Dearman, who had previously expressed reluctance to face execution, recently voiced frustration in a letter to the Alabama Attorney General's Office, accusing the state of delaying his death sentence. “I have done everything that is required to drop my appeals and have my sentence carried out... can you please respond to this letter to let me know what the hold up is??????” Dearman wrote. He added that the prolonged process was taking a toll on both him and his family. The 2016 killings shocked the local community. Dearman, reportedly under the influence of drugs at the time, used an ax to murder the victims while they slept. After the massacre, he forced Lester and a 3-month-old child, who was unharmed, into a car and drove to his father's house in Mississippi, where he later surrendered to authorities. The victims of the massacre were identified as Joseph Adam Turner, 26; Robert Lee Brown, 26; Chelsea Marie Reed, 22; Justin Kaleb Reed, 23; and Shannon Melissa Randall, 35. Chelsea Reed was pregnant with her first child, and the 3-month-old boy was the first son of Turner and Randall. Dearman was sentenced to death in 2018 and has been on death row since. Despite having a Republican governor and Republican supermajority in the Alabama House and Senate for over a decade, there had been no movement on school choice and education freedom.   In fact, Gov Ivey had been diametrically opposed to it, as has state House and Senate leadership, despite parental rights and education freedom being part of the ALGOP Party Platform.   That all changed this year.   Bryan brings on School Choice evangelist, Corey DeAngelis, to talk about the history of the school choice movement and why there has been such a shift across the nation with 13 states adopting Education Savings Accounts since COVID.   They analyze the CHOOSE Act that the state House passed and compare it to other states. (Update: The Alabama Senate also passed the CHOOSE Act and Governor Ivey signed it into law shortly after this recording.)   Corey also discusses the "bloodbath" on Super Tuesday in Texas for anti-school choice, NEA-sponsored, Republican-incumbent legislators his organization targeted.   To join the fight and become an 1819 News Member and have access to all of our behind the scenes content, click here: https://1819news.com/membership

Episode 63: Are IVF babies endangered?: Perspective on the threat to IVF from the first IVF Baby in the US: Elizabeth Carr

In the wake of the Dobbs decision that effectively ended federal abortion rights protection under Roe v Wade, the fate of IVF and fertility treatments has been hanging in the balance. In Alabama in February/March of 2024, a decision on the rights of a fetus brought IVF to a halt. Was this was the “pro-life” movement had in mind? To prohibit people from building the families they envision? Fortunately, that outcome was “patched,” thanks to activism by reproductive rights' advocates, among others. One of the most important voices in this ongoing conversation (and spoiler: this conversation didn't start when Roe v Wade ended) is that of Elizabeth Carr, the first IVF baby in the United States. Elizabeth Carr, who has been “in the media since three cells old,” chose a career in journalism, and she is now fully in as an advocate for fertility treatments like IVF. She has a podcast called The First, does public speaking, hosts events, and speaks out when needed to protect the rights of people to create their families as they choose. Learn more about Elizabeth on her website: https://ejordancarr.com/. In this episode you'll hear: [0:00] Introducing Elizabeth Carr, the first IVF baby in the United States. In my observations of Alabama politics, every election year brings an underlying election year surprise or two. The underlying prevailing theme emerging from the Alabama political arena this year is that women have arrived politically in the Heart of Dixie. Governor Kay Ivey is only the second female elected Governor of Alabama, Lurleen Wallace being the first in 1966. Governor Ivey won a decisive second-term nomination as the Republican nominee in May. She will face another female Democratic nominee, Yolanda Flowers, in the November General Election. This is the first time two women will face each other for governor. In...Article Link
