There are a lot of Best Picture winners that are big, bold, and epic in size. Well, in 1936, MGM made something pretty big ... and long.  A film that brought people to the theatre to enjoy the spectacle of Broadway, especially if they weren't able to see a show live ad in person.  The Great Ziegfeld, at the time, was the longest talking film ever made! It was a box-office success!  Looking back all these years ... despite its success, should it have also won the Best Picture of 1936 at the Academy Awards? Listen to film critic Jack Ferdman's take on it as he analyzes everything about The Great Ziegfeld as well as many other films from that year, and hear which film he gives his Rewatch Oscar of 1936 to.Download, listen, and share ALL Rewatching  Oscar episodes.SUBSCRIBE and FOLLOW Rewatching Oscar:Website: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comApple Podcasts/iTunesSpotifyGoogle PodcastsiHear RadioPodchaserPodcast AddictTuneInAlexaAmazon Overcasts Podcast Addict Player FMRSS Feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1815964.rssWebsite: https://rewatchingoscar.buzzsprout.comSocial Media Links: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, InstagramShare your thoughts and suggestions with us through:Facebook Messanger or email us atjack@rewatchingoscar.comMusic by TurpacShow Producer: Jack FerdmanPodcast Logo Design: Jack FerdmanMovie (audio) trailer courtesy of MovieClips Classic TrailersMovie (audio) clips courtesy of YouTubeSupport us by downloading, sharing, and giving us a 5-star Rating.  It helps our podcast continue to reach many people and make it available to share more episodes with everyone.

And now back to your regularly scheduled program. Hosts Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler return to their examination of the last century in film with a look at 1938. Brad recommended a movie that neither he nor Jake had seen before in My Man Godfrey. They talk about the power of the Thin Man, William Powell, and the tour-de-force performances by the female cast, including Carole Lombard, Gail Patrick, and the indominable Alice Brady. They talk about the peculiar place in Oscar history this Gregory La Cava film occupies, and The theme of the haves vs. the have-nots continues in Jake's pick for the week, Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times. They marvel at how a 90-year-old movie can look like it came out today, at the power of Chaplin's comedic persona, and at the startling beauty of Paulette Goddard (and at her character's baffling backstory). Other movies mentioned in this episode: Sabotage (1936), the Great Ziegfeld (1936) Silver Linings Playbook (2012), Godzilla Minus One (2023).

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December.  We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection. We start with the highly requested  TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.  This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films.  But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release.  The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film.  Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release.  Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Power, Best Actress winner Juice Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer.  We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film.  Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louise Jourdan, and James Mason.   We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Milos Rossa and their importance to the film.  And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film.  We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh.  This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.Purchase links:TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932)MADAME BOVARY (1949)THE GREAT ZIEGFELD  (1936)GENTLEMAN JIM (1942)ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. For this year's Nutcracker entry, Kerry and Collin fulfill a listener request with "The Nutcracker Prince," surprisingly not a direct-to-video animated film from this era, but sure feels like one. What is Blue (or Bleu) Cheese Cake? Is it acceptable to have a Nutcracker movie without the slightest hint of ballet? Is it worth the effort to travel to Miller's Pub on Wabash Avenue in Chicago to try the seasonal Tom and Jerry beverage? All these questions answered, plus a Blu-ray Gift Exchange from December that feature a few classics and obscurities. [ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1938 and the nominees are: 1. Luise Rainer - The Good Earth 2. Irene Donne - The Awful Truth 3. Greta Garbo - Camille 4. Janet Gaynor - A Star is Born 5. Barbara Stanwyck - Stella Dallas - In 1938 Luise Rainer became the first performer to win back-to-back Oscars as well as the first performer to have two Academy Awards. Her first Oscar was won the year prior for The Great Ziegfeld. If you weren't aware, this is perhaps one of the most controversial Oscar wins because Luise Rainer, a German born woman, is portraying a Chinese woman in yellow face in The Good Earth. A big part of her win for this Oscar was the major financial support from the MGM studio she was represented by. The other nominees gave career standouts in their respective films but were freelance actors and couldn't campaign to the same lengths as a major studio. Luise Rainer was only in Hollywood for a total of 3 years before eventually leaving as a result of the lack of interest in “the glam” of movie stardom. Regardless, she set an Oscar record that has only been repeated (in leading roles) by Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, and Tom Hanks. Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Chris as they discuss.

Synopsis Today's date marks the anniversary of the first performance of Jerome Kern's Show Boat, produced in 1927 at the National Theater in Washington, D.C. by Florenz Ziegfeld. Show Boat's book and lyrics were by Oscar Hammerstein II, adapted from Edna Ferber's novel, which had been published only the year before. It was a most unusual story for a musical, and dealt frankly with alcoholism and interracial marriage. Mixing tragic and comic elements was something simply unheard of in American musical theater of that time. Ziegfeld's secretary recalled that before the Washington premiere, he fretted that audiences would be disappointed that the girls on stage were wearing much too much clothing for a typical Ziegfeld show. There was little or no applause following the November 15th premiere, and Ziegfeld assumed that “Show Boat” was a flop. But the Washington audiences were simply too stunned to react. When Ziegfeld's secretary told his boss that there were long lines waiting to buy tickets for subsequent performances, at first Ziegfeld didn't believe it. But by the time Show Boat opened on Broadway the following month, even the Great Ziegfeld knew he had a hit on his hands—and one based on great music and a powerful book, with nary a scantily-glad show girl in sight! “The Great Ziegfeld” is a three hour showcase glorifying the ideal American entrepreneur. A classist figure that swings wildly between giving to the working class and conning them into free labor, Mr. Ziegfeld would pull himself up by his bootstraps if his Louis Vuitton Diamond-Studded Oxfords had any. Watch as this movie insists one man can single-handedly change the world of art on his own and ignores all of the horror of producing underage showgirls. On this episode, we are discussing the ninth Best Picture Winner: “The Great Ziegfeld.” "The Great Ziegfeld" is a biopic that follows the rise of Florenz Ziegfeld, a theater producer who became renowned during the 1920s for his lavish stage productions. Starting out by promoting individual performers, Ziegfeld established revues featuring dozens of women, shows that developed into his famous Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway. His appreciation of women is also apparent off-stage, leading to a love triangle involving actresses Anna Held and Billie Burke.  Directed by Robert Z. Leonard, the film stars William Powell as Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., Myrna Loy as Billie Burke, Luise Rainer as Anna Held, and Frank Morgan as Jack Billings. Here on The Envelope, we discuss & review every Best Picture Winner in the Academy Awards History. We are a Cinema Squad Production, presented on the Cinema Squad Podcast Channel. In this very special Oscars episode (or....not so much, ha!) Heather tells the tale of Luise Rainer, who was the first person to win two Academy Awards (consecutively, no less)for her work in The Great Ziegfeld and The Good Earth, and Morgan gives us a little history lesson on the legendary tale of Boudica, the fearless Celtic Queen who basically laid waste to an entire civilization to defend the honor of her family. More is more with Oscars, but people sure love their silent films back in 1936. This week, Chris and Matt are joined by special guest Anna Delman to break down the epic battle of Chaplin vs. Ziegfeld. Oscar went with the opulent three hour biopic "The Great Ziegfeld," which chronicles the life of legendary entertainer Florence Ziegfeld. With show-stopping feats of costuming, production design and dancing, the film is pure spectacle. Meanwhile, the biggest hit of the year belongs to Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times." Even in the era of sound, Chaplin marries his traditional silent film persona against themes of industrialization and technology.
