If the relationship between a government, the military, and industry is to really change from a transactional one towards a sincere partnership it must be underpinned by a new era of honesty and clarity. Simon Kings, Exec BD Director of Raytheon UK, talks about what has changed for industry since 2022, and what the threat picture looks like for the DIB. The discussion covers procurement and acquisition, processes and modernisation, challenges to delivery, and what the reality of ‘sovereignty' as a political ambition statement looks like. Foundational to all of this is Simon's description of the way industry (and shareholders) make investment decisions: yet another set of political speeches and promises, policies and transformations, doesn't cut it. Clarity about which bits of national security are not going to be funded are as important as the revelations of what is to be renewed. That honesty and clarity seems to have been missing for several decades. Will this be the moment it changes?

In this episode, I share some tips for working with companies that have more money than time. A good way to start is to look for companies with high bonding and no contracts if you want to work with such a company. When it comes to working with approved sources on a DIB solicitation, check if the listed company has a history of providing materials to the government or if a third-party vendor has provided the materials. Also to ensure payment, small businesses should discuss the type of relationship you want to have with the company and sell information that provides value to them. Simply giving them a report may not be enough to secure contracts, so giving the company bits and pieces of information to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise and discussing potential partnerships. ¿Te has ido acercando a tus propios compromisos, cumpliéndolos? ¿Recibes asistencia?

In this episode, Ishreen invites listeners to explore the concept of negative DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) during a thought-provoking discussion from their inaugural research breakfast. Featuring insights from industry leaders across various sectors, she delves into the potential for organizations to receive a minus one rating for actively opposing DEIB initiatives. Examining the current landscape of DEIB, particularly in light of recent legislative changes in the U.S. that have led some companies to scale back their diversity efforts, the episode challenges listeners to consider the implications of a monoculture in organizational diversity and the necessity of fostering a more inclusive environment. KEY TAKEAWAYS Making diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) integral to an organization is crucial for its success. Once embedded, it becomes nearly impossible to remove, similar to how IT has evolved within businesses. Organizations are at different stages in their DEIB journey, with some potentially operating at a negative level (minus 1.0). This disparity can be influenced by factors such as industry, size, and organizational evolution. Recent legislative changes in the U.S. are causing some companies to scale back their DEIB initiatives. This trend is driven by a backlash from those with privilege and movements that oppose DEIB efforts. A focus on a single type of diversity (e.g., gender) without considering other forms (e.g., learning, technology) can lead to a lack of flourishing within organizations. A diverse approach is essential for innovation and growth. Leaders are encouraged to actively engage in discussions about DEIB, share insights, and implement practical steps to foster an inclusive culture that values all employees and drives business success. BEST MOMENTS "Is there such a thing as negative DEIB? ... should we drop below zero and give a minus one rating to those companies that demonstrate active opposition to DEIB?" "I actually think some of the organisations are almost at minus 1.0." "If you look at what's happening in America, there's legislation that came in at the government level that's now trickling into US-owned companies." "When a supposedly serious party proposes removal of DIB legislation as part of their manifesto, you go, what could be the trigger for that?" "I think there are organizations that are definitely at minus one. Totally." We will dive into a wide range of topics, from cyber regulation, software liability, navigating Federal/Defense cyber compliance and the need for digital defense of the modern national security ecosystem.- First off, for those unfamiliar with you and your background, can you tell us a bit about yourself, as well as Palantir? You're a big proponent on the role that software plays now, and will play in the future when it comes the fifth domain of warfare, cybersecurity, so let's give into some of those topics.- I know you've voiced some strong opinions on the role of cyber insurance and also compliance when it comes to its static nature, compared to the dynamic activity of malicious actors and the threat landscape. Can you expand on that?- You and I also chatted about the fact that most cyber issues tie back to hygiene, and that there are no silver bullets. Do you feel like this gets lost among the marketing hype of cyber?- I know you've talked about externalizing some of Palantir's software infrastructure to enable more companies with security infrastructure and toolchains. Can you tell us about some of those capabilities?- The enablement of more companies is key, as you know the DIB has seen massive consolidation in the past decade or more, largely with the small handful of players dominating the lions share of the work in the DoD. This arguably poses systemic concentrated risks, as well as doesn't give access for the DoD to commercial innovation. You called the DoD's most powerful ally America's commerical tech sector in a recent piece. We know that times have changed, and unlike eras of the past, most digital innovation comes from the commercial space, but DoD tends to have a not built here syndrome, no doubt driven by incumbents, incentives, fiefdom building and more. What do you think the national security risks of this are?- Given you've been around DoD for some time, you've no doubt been exposed to processes like ATO's and RMF and more. What are your thoughts on the current state of compliance in the DoD and how it could potentially hinder access to commercial innovation?

In this episode, Ishreen introduces the concept of DEIB 3.0, a transformative approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace. Highlighting a collaboration with Metro Bank, she shares insights on their purpose-led partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board, aimed at increasing female participation in cricket through the Women and Girls Fund. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ishreen introduces DEIB 3.0, a new approach to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging that aims to create inclusive cultures where employees feel valued and connected to a shared purpose. The current backlash against DEIB initiatives is attributed to resistance from existing power structures, particularly among white men who perceive these initiatives as biased against them. A shift in focus is needed to move towards a win-win dynamic. Metro Bank is highlighted as a collaborator in the DEIB 3.0 movement, showcasing their partnership with the England and Wales Cricket Board to promote women and girls in cricket through a co-developed Women and Girls Fund. The partnership between Metro Bank and the ECB is structured as a six-year commitment, emphasizing the importance of time in making meaningful and lasting changes at the grassroots level. DEIB 3.0 emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and a data-led approach to identify focus areas, ensuring that initiatives deliver social benefits while also achieving return on investment (ROI) targets for all stakeholders involved. BEST MOMENTS "We wanted to make sure we were taking the time on how we develop the Women and Girls Fund." "We didn't want just any sort of traditional sponsorship. We were really looking for a partnership that was centered around true purpose." "To really make any meaningful impact at a grassroots level, it takes time." "An over-focus on representation at the cost of equity, inclusion, and belonging is what set up this win-lose dynamic." "DEIB 3.0 aims to move DIB from a conversation that has a win-lose dynamic to a win-win approach." When was the last time you took a break from learning new professional skills and, instead, carved out space to pursue self-discovery and community support? On this episode of Transforming Trauma, host Emily Ruth welcomes back the faculty of the Complex Trauma Training Center (CTTC)––Brad Kammer, Stefanie Klein, and Marcia Black––to introduce SPACE, an innovative inner development program for therapists debuting in early 2025. SPACE supports therapists on three levels of the human experience: the personal, interpersonal, and transpersonal. Brad, Stefanie, and Marcia guide you through the intention of the program, as well as its structure, highlighting the themes and what participants can expect to gain from each session. They also share insights into how their own struggles and learning over their long careers as therapists helped them become more present, authentic, and effective therapists, and inspired their creation of SPACE. When we think of space, we may think of exploration into outer space. What CTTC's SPACE program offers is exploration into our inner space: “It's [an] invitation to have a new relationship to our own inner world as a therapist.” Learn more about being a part of this community About the SPACE Faculty: Brad Kammer, LMFT, LPCC, is the Training Director and Senior Trainer for the Complex Trauma Training Center. In this episode, Chris Petersen, Co-Founder and CEO of RADICL, and I discuss the challenges of securing the small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that serve the United States defense industrial base (DIB) and critical infrastructure. These SMBs play a significant role in supporting the Advanced Defense Systems that protect our nation from domestic and international threats. So, it is imperative to review what it takes to keep these SMBs safe from cyber-attacks.Action Items and Discussion Highlights• Treat cybersecurity as a strategic opportunity and invest adequate resources to build and sustain this competency.• Establishing fail-safe software development practices.• Software testing and rollout models must be continuously and rigorously tested.• Proactively determine disaster scenarios and stress test organizational resilience in dealing with those situations.• Consider establishing key metrics to measure the effectiveness and maturity of cybersecurity operations.• Demand visibility and transparency into the specific activities a managed service provider is conducting to protect the organization, such as vulnerabilities remediated, security incidents handled, and training completed. Regular reporting should be provided.• Conduct thorough due diligence when selecting a cybersecurity service provider, including validating the qualifications and expertise of the individuals responsible for security, the technologies used, and references from other customers.Time Stamps00:02 -- Introduction02:09 -- Guest's Professional Highlights04:32 -- Chris Petersen's Perspective on the Global IT Outage Fiasco08:01 -- What could Delta have done differently? Could they have proactively predicted such a disaster scenario and prepared for it? 11:45 -- Key Findings from RADICL's 2024 DIB Cybersecurity Maturity Report13:29 -- Chris Petersen's take on the survey findings19:49 -- Recommendations on how SMBs serving the defense industrial base and critical infrastructure can meet and exceed compliance requirements.24:21 -- Cybersecurity as a strategic opportunity28:43 -- Guidance on selecting service providers and managing outsourced relationships34:27 -- Advice for SMB CEOs37:18 -- Closing ThoughtsMemorable Chris Petersen Quotes/Statements"When we build software, our quality practices need to be fail-safe, especially when you have a footprint like CrowdStrike does that can be so impactful if there is an issue.""CrowdStrike needs to look at their testing model and perhaps their rollout model of how they roll out content updates.""Microsoft also shouldn't be so susceptible to a program operating in the kernel that can repeatedly cause a blue screen of death. There should be some resiliency built into the operating system itself.""I think the technology providers need to build more resiliency into their technologies, especially when they're foundational and are platform-level technologies. For security, folks need to make sure we are doing a really thorough job on the quality side.""I'm especially concerned because most of these companies typically don't have sophisticated incident response operations in place." "I'm concerned that these companies have accounts that have been compromised, have endpoints that have been compromised, but the vast majority of them don't have that class of forensic capability to detect and remove the malicious files.""The thing with compliance, though, is it comes down to how well you achieve compliance.""Fundamentally, business operations are...

- For those not familiar with you and ThreatLocker, can you tell us a bit about yourself and the ThreatLocker team?- When we look out at the endpoint protection landscape, what do you feel some of the most pressing threats and risks are?- There of course has been a big push for Zero Trust in the industry being led by CISA, NIST, and industry. How does ThreatLocker approach Zero Trust when it comes to the Endpoint Protection Platform?- Another thing that caught my eye is the ThreatLocker Allowlisting capability. We know Applications remain one of the top attack vectors per sources such as the DBIR. Can you tell us about the ThreatLocker Allowlisting capability and blocking malicious app activity on endpoints?- Taking that a step further, you all often speak about your Ringfencing capability that deals with Zero Day vulnerabilities. As we know, traditional vulnerability management tools can't stop Zero Day exploits. How does the ThreatLocker platform handle Zero Day protection?- I saw you all recently had a webinar focused on CMMC and NIST 800-171, which applies to the Defense Industrial Base. Obviously endpoint threats are a big concern there for the DoD and the DIB. Can you talk about how ThreatLocker is working with that community?- For folks wanting to learn more about ThreatLocker, where should they go, and what are some things to keep an eye out for?Find out more about ThreatLocker!

Earlier this month, the RSA Conference in San Francisco drew crowds of tens of thousands of cybersecurity experts and practitioners, including a huge cohort of cyber officials from the federal government. One of those was Bailey Bickley, the chief of defense industrial base cybersecurity at the NSA. I caught up with Bickley during some of her downtime at RSA to discuss the big takeaways from this year's conference, as well as all of the work the NSA is doing to help bolster the security of defense contractors, particularly smaller ones that can't always afford to secure themselves. From CMMC and the new DIB cyber strategy to the free services the NSA is providing to members of the DIB community, we cover it all. Now, let's go to my conversation with Bailey Bickley.
