Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway's greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. Today's Guest Jamie-Lynn Sigler has been acting and singing since the age of 7. She got her start in New York regional theater, and has since starred in over two dozen theatrical productions including "Annie," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Sound of Music," "The Wiz," and "Gypsy." In the summer of 2001, she starred in the touring production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Cinderella," playing the lead opposite Eartha Kitt. Jamie made her Broadway debut starring as Belle in Disney's Broadway production of "Beauty and the Beast" from October of 2002 through February 2003. Beyond her theatrical appearances, she starred as Meadow Soprano in the critically acclaimed HBO original series The Sopranos (1999). For her work on the show, she received the 1999 and 2000 Hollywood Reporter Young Star Awards for Best Young Actress in a Dramatic Television Series and both 2001 and 2002 ALMA nominations. Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway's greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. This past week, on August 23rd, the world (A.K.A. musical theater nerds) recognized the anniversary of the passing of Oscar Hammerstein II, one of Broadway's most renowned contributors. So to honor Mr. Hammerstein in our own, special ThWAT way, here's Rob's episode all about the age in which Hammerstein ruled supreme: the Golden Age of Musical Theater. Judy Collins is an iconic Renaissance Artist and Grammy Winning Singer/Songwriter with 55 albums and hit singles including Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” and Stephen Sondheim's “Send In The Clowns”. She has been a dominating force in social activism, as a filmmaker, author and as a keynote speaker. And she had one of the greatest songs of the rock era written about her - “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by Stephen Stills and Crosby Stills and Nash. In this wonderful interview we discuss her background and successes, including her artistic formative years in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with fellow artists Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk, Richie Havens and Peter Paul and Mary, and she tells a few terrific stories. And we do a Double Songfest. In the first one we play and discuss several songs by other artists who she loves including Shawn Colvin and Joan Baez, and in the second one we play and discuss some of her greatest works. Oscar Hammerstein II was Broadway's greatest lyricist. He was responsible for the book and lyrics to so many of the musicals that created the Golden Era of Broadway. With Richard Rogers he wrote “The King And I”, “Oklahoma”, “The Sound Of Music”, “Carousel”, “South Pacific” and “Flower Drum Song”. With Jerome Kern he wrote “Show Boat”. He co-wrote 850 songs, and won 8 Tony Awards and 2 Oscars. My guest today is Ben Francis, author of a very compelling new book titled Careful the Spell You Cast — How Stephen Sondheim Extended the Range of the American Musical. Sondheim is without a doubt one of the most studied, examined, and analyzed Broadway creators of all time. In fact, we have done quite a bit of that right here on Broadway Nation. However, as you will hear, Ben Francis contends that in spite of all of that investigation, Sondheim continues to be very misunderstood. He is often labeled as being cynical and pessimistic, but Francis instead argues that Sondheim firmly belongs to the “Broadway aspirational tradition” — a tradition that celebrates dreams of a better life — and he suggests that Sondheim's shows are to a great extent are a continuation of the work of his mentor Oscar Hammerstein II. Alan Jay Lerner was very busy in 1951, writing the screenplay for An American In Paris, writing songs for the Broadway show Paint Your Wagon and working with Burton Lane for eight songs for the movie musical Royal Wedding. That Fred Astaire movie featured the Oscar-nominated song "Too Late Now," which marked Lerner's first songwriting Oscar nomination. Will he win on his first try, or will Oscar Hammerstein II earn his third for revising a song originally meant for a Marx Brothers movie?
t was a thrill to chat with Laurie, whose impeccable research, combined with her writing and editing skills, resulted in a fascinating biography of Oscar Hammerstein II, starting with his grandfather's day in vaudeville, and continuing up to his paternal relationship with the late Stephen Sondheim. Her insights and analysis are helpful in understanding this great man of the musical theater. And we learn about Oscar's activities outside the theater world and his efforts to make the world a better place, and why that's not as naive as it sounds. The book is published by Yale University Press whom we must thank for producing this must-read for anyone interested in American music theater.

Synopsis Today's date marks the anniversary of the first performance of Jerome Kern's Show Boat, produced in 1927 at the National Theater in Washington, D.C. by Florenz Ziegfeld. Show Boat's book and lyrics were by Oscar Hammerstein II, adapted from Edna Ferber's novel, which had been published only the year before. It was a most unusual story for a musical, and dealt frankly with alcoholism and interracial marriage. Mixing tragic and comic elements was something simply unheard of in American musical theater of that time. Ziegfeld's secretary recalled that before the Washington premiere, he fretted that audiences would be disappointed that the girls on stage were wearing much too much clothing for a typical Ziegfeld show. There was little or no applause following the November 15th premiere, and Ziegfeld assumed that “Show Boat” was a flop. But the Washington audiences were simply too stunned to react. When Ziegfeld's secretary told his boss that there were long lines waiting to buy tickets for subsequent performances, at first Ziegfeld didn't believe it. But by the time Show Boat opened on Broadway the following month, even the Great Ziegfeld knew he had a hit on his hands—and one based on great music and a powerful book, with nary a scantily-glad show girl in sight!
