This ancient wanderer originated from the direction of Sagittarius, near our galaxy's heart, and has been traveling through space for potentially billions of years. With an extreme orbital eccentricity that makes its path appear almost perfectly straight, this cosmic messenger carries secrets from stellar nurseries far beyond our own. Join us as we follow its incredible journey from the depths of interstellar space to our cosmic doorstep.

We tend to think about movie stars as either glamorous or relatable. But in the 1920s and 1930s, when the Hollywood star system was taking shape, a number of unusual stars appeared on the silver screen, representing groups from which the American mainstream typically sought to avert its eyes. What did it mean for a white entertainment columnist to empathize with an ambiguously gendered Black child star? Or for boys to idolize Lon Chaney, famous for portraying characters with disabilities? Hollywood's Others: Love and Limitation in the Star System (Columbia UP, 2025) explores the affective ties between white, non-disabled audiences and the fascinatingly different stars with whom they identified—but only up to a point. Katherine Fusco argues that stardom in this era at once offered ways for viewers to connect across group boundaries while also policing the limits of empathy. Examining fan magazines alongside film performances, she traces the intense audience attachment to atypical celebrities and the ways the film industry sought to manage it. Fusco considers Shirley Temple's career in light of child labor laws and changing notions of childhood; shows how white viewers responded to Black music in depictions of the antebellum South; and analyzes the gender politics of conspiracy theories around celebrity suicides. Shedding light on marginalized stardoms and the anxieties they provoked, Hollywood's Others challenges common notions about film's capacity to build empathy. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to a very special Part 2 Episode of Architectette! We continue our conversation with Denise Scott Brown. Denise Scott Brown is an architect; planner & urban designer; and a theorist, writer and educator whose projects, research, and writing have influenced designers and architects since the 1960s. Her writings have changed the practice of architecture as we know it and her built work spans several continents. Some of her notable writings include Learning from Las Vegas, Having Words, and Architecture as Signs and Systems. She was a long-standing principal of the firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. Many of the topics we cover are influenced from the recently published book, Denise Scott Brown in Other Eyes: Portraits of an Architect edited by Frida Grahn.   Check out our social media @architectette on Instagram, the Architectette Podcast Page on LinkedIn, and our newsletter at architectette.com for behind the scenes exclusives and clips from the recording.  We talk about: - The challenges of balancing community and developer needs for Philadelphia's South Street and how racial politics influenced the process.  - Denise's design process for the Provincial Capitol Building in Toulouse. She explains her inspiration for the building's iconic diagonal and other aesthetic elements. - Inspiration for her article: Sexism and the Star System which talks about gender and architecture. We hear from her first hand what it was like to be seen as a lesser partner to Robert Venturi and how she dealt with being overlooked, rejected from the Pritzker Prize, or not acknowledged for her significant contributions.  - In addition to her illustrious career, Denise was a mom! She shares about her son, Jimmy, and the realities of balancing career and parenthood. - How Denise became interested in photography to document and study urban conditions and she shares the influences and experience behind that ICONIC photo of her and Bob (Venturi) with the Las Vegas Strip in the background. - We end with the National Gallery- sign the petition to save the building! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed interviewing Denise. (Denise, Emma, and Nyma - THANK YOU!) We have a very special guest on today's episode of Architectette, Denise Scott Brown. I had the pleasure of chatting with Denise for two and a half hours (please remember, Denise is in her 90s!) - so this conversation will be divided into two episodes. In part 1 we talk about:  - We start with the iconic theory: Duck vs Decorated Shed. How did Denise come up with the idea? Why a duck? And did she anticipate her theories' on academia?  - We next explore Denise's early teaching days. She shares stories from Penn, UCLA, and Berkeley and we walk about late-night crits and ‘Functions of a Table'.  - We dive into the origin story of Learning from Las Vegas and then hear some stories you might not read in your history books: how Denise met Robert Venturi and started working with him and I also ask where she got her bold, graphic wedding dress (see an image in Grahn's book!) - Next, we cover the political and social complexities of growing up as a Jewish immigrant in Africa and draw parallels to her teaching during the free speech movement and more recent eras of social reform. - Denise expresses the importance of creativity in childhood and she shares her earliest memory- from age two! - If you're listening closely, you'll also hear a few shoutouts to the Drexel Community- Paul Hirshorn and John Fry and more unexpectedly, Denise draws a few parallels to Trevor Noah.  I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed interviewing Denise. (Denise, Emma, and Nyma - THANK YOU!) Please join us for next week's Part 2 episode where we will discuss Sexism and the Star System, Philadelphia's South Street, the Provincial Capitol Building in Toulouse, and more! Behaviorist and HR specialist Patrick Bet-David developed the “STAR System” typology of personality. “STAR” stands for structure, task, action, and relationship. Here are the 4 personality types explained and how to deal with them. Be sure to take note of which two types describe you the best, as most of us tend to fall into two categories (our primary type and our secondary type)!

In this episode I talk with Julia Balaz about everything related to Galactic Astrology, the soul's evolution and where she sees the earth is at, as a whole, in this time in history. When she began as a practitioner she was studying “earthly lives” and looking into the Lunar Nodes to understand more about her clients. While doing this, her faith in astrology grew exponentially and what she quickly realized is that “what is written in our chart  is actually manifesting in our lives”. In time, she started attracting clients to her hypnosis sessions that were describing “lives or experiences of their soul that did not seem earthly'', and it seemed as if they had chosen to come to earth to spread love and light, which made her want to find out more. Not long after, she came to the understanding that through astrology and the zodiac degrees she could track the different star systems and find these alignments in her clients charts. Since this breakthrough, nothing could stop her.HIGHLIGHTSJulia's storyFollowing your heartOrbs of lightStar systemsHypnosisRaising your frequencyOur connection to starsThe trauma of being humanThe need to controlHopeABOUT JULIA For many years Julia felt guided to meticulously study Astrological Charts of her clients AFTER their Quantum Healing Hypnosis session. If you're trying to work out what's healthy to eat and what to avoid – there's a new five star rating system. Researchers in the US have looked at previous studies which examined how much certain foods increased the risk of developing a particular disease – or if they could even protect you. Dr Chris Murray from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Washington says he hopes the star ratings will help people to make informed decisions about their health. We hear from Dr Tammy Tong, a nutritional epidemiologist at Oxford University about the strengths and limitations of this approach. Millions of people around the world use open-pit toilets – a hole in the ground where they can see and smell other people's waste. The walls are often made of bits of metal and cloth and they are often shared between many families, provoking feelings of shame and disgust. Dr Ian Ross from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has been measuring the difference a nicer toilet can have on people's quality of life in Mozambique – with help from Zaida Adriano Cumbe who talked to families involved in the study in Maputo.
