New week who this This week the boys talk about the remarkable life of Frederick Mayer, a Jewish-American hero of World War II. In this series, we delve into the extraordinary journey of Mayer, who transformed from a German-born Jew fleeing the Nazis to a daring spy for the United States.Key Highlights of Frederick Mayer's Life:Early Life and Emigration: Born on October 28, 1921, in Freiburg, Germany, Mayer's family fled to the United States in 1938 to escape the rising tide of antisemitism under Nazi rule [2].Military Service: After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mayer enlisted in the U.S. Army. His skills in languages and combat made him an ideal candidate for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA [2].Operation Greenup: Mayer led Operation Greenup, a daring mission that involved parachuting into Austria to gather intelligence and negotiate the surrender of German forces. His team included fellow Jewish refugees, showcasing their commitment to defeating the Nazis [2].Capture and Torture: During his mission, Mayer was captured by the Gestapo. Despite brutal torture, he maintained his cover and ultimately played a crucial role in facilitating the surrender of German troops in Innsbruck [2].Legacy: Mayer's bravery and intelligence not only contributed to the Allied victory but also highlighted the significant role of Jewish Americans in the war effort. He was awarded several medals for his service, including the Legion of Merit and the Purple Heart [2].And also....Tristans dives into the incredible story of Juan Pujol García, one of World War II's most audacious spies. The Berlin Film Festival is known for its political nature and this year's edition is no exception, with elections in Germany casting a shadow over proceedings and calls for a boycott over the event's attitude towards Palestinians in Gaza. Film critic Emma Jones takes us through some of the highly topical productions that are screening, from a Ukrainian documentary about how children are experiencing life in wartime to an Israeli film about actor David Cunio, who was taken hostage on October 7, 2023. Timothée Chalamet, Jessica Chastain and Robert Pattinson have all been on the red carpet in Berlin for premieres of their new films. We also check out a couple of the French features making their debut in the German capital, as Marion Cotillard gives a glacial turn as a Garbo-esque actress in "The Ice Tower".

Ipswich Waste Services workers are going on strike from today onwards, over a pay rise dispute with the Ipswich City Council. The two parties have not been able to reach an agreement which means many Ipswich residents are set to have overflowing bins that they will have to empty themselves. Ipswich City Council Acting CEO, Matt Smith told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "We're trying to balance the cost of living pressures on our employees, but we also have the community to think of and the cost of living pressures on them around rates and the other services that we provide." When asked if Ipswich residents will need to take their own rubbish to the dump, Acting CEO Smith replied, "That may well be the case."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
From this Friday garbage collectors in Ipswich will be going on strike affecting up to 30,000 homes. A pay dispute between Ipswich Waste Services workers and Ipswich City Council has led to this industrial action. Workers are asking for better pay, increased superannuation, and allowances for handling dangerous materials. Transport Workers’ Union Queensland Director of Organising Josh Millroy told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, 'these guys do really dangerous work, they're often hosing out hazardous waste, poisons, rotting garbage from the back of trucks.' 'So, this is a really tough job. Now, these members don't want to take industrial action. They've tried to reach a fair agreement with the Council,' Millroy said. 'So we want to make sure these guys get a fair day's pay for a fair day's work, and also that they're not destitute in their retirement.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seven more movie reviews, let's go! Gee this is simply not the best batch. I said it. Today we start with (The Feminist and the Fuzz 1971) Barbara Eden stars with the good Morning America guy in this wacky film with some serious ideas that they bring into America's living room, giving us the representation, and radical crumb many were literally dying for, but you just, as always knew they were gonna mainstream a few steps back at the end, the price that you knew you were gonna pay. I remember that made for TV movie, the day my kid went punk, that came out just as me and three other 16 year olds started the first ever punk band in our suburban catholic town, boy was that film a let down. I'd personally say that it's worth a watch. It's on you tube, watch it then pop back and listen hmmmmmmm, maybe. Next is (Elvis on tour 1972). It looks and sounds cool. There is just a lot of Elvis music here, and I could use more interviews. Also I'm sure that the filmmakers must of felt quite bound and gagged about really reporting what the saw and heard, at least in my head cannon it seems that way. The famous rock story of Elvis getting denied his prescription at a pharmacy on the road because a sympathetic pharmacist saw the massive addiction of Elvis to pills, and Elvis's manager simply buying the pharmacy, is NOT here, how could it be. But I am sure it was all seen. Even with the puff piece attitude of this publicity thing you can see it pretty dang well. Next today we move on to (Snoopy come home 1972) This is the first of the trilogy of Charlie Brown feature films that were going to be covering for the pod, and the second in the film series after 1969's A boy named Charlie Brown. Look this is great and our discussion is fabulous I'm sure, I've seen this movie several times in my life SO it's more than ok that I fell asleep this time. Those other two lovelies can pick up my slack. There's dog and bird discrimination for Snoopy and Woodstock as they travel to visit a sick friend. Next is (Charlie Varrick 1973) and Garak from deep space 9 is here. Garak plays Harman Sullivan, a hot head bank robber who like Veruka Salt, wants it all now. We also gots Joe don Baker, Felicia Farr, and the coach of the bad news bears himself Walter Matthau. Lots of great characters here to including the dean from Animal House, in this gritty great stock 70's movie where, uh oh the bank robbers ripped off the mob. Whatever will they do? Let's talk talk talk about it shall we. Onward to (3 days of the Condor) Nows here's a popular 70's political thriller that your decade under the influence would love to time machine change a bit of. I love Robert Redford, he's cute, thoughtful and chooses rad projects, even now. See (The company you keep 2012) where he plays a former Weather Underground activist. But here in Condor he makes this icky decision to not just hand the amazing force of Faye Dunaway the dang gun after they get to her pad. Just pisses me off ok. Great directing and cinematography here. Would you like to know more. (The Hindenburg 1975) is up to bat now and let's just say that for me….George C Scott does NOT George C Scott enough, and the super cool Anne Bancroft is very under used, watch Turning point and Garbo speaks to compensate. The dick from Real Genius and Ghostbusters is good here, and I don't hate this, wait, the amazing director Robert Wise is also under represented here. ACK,,,,,,,, moving on finally to wrap this poop up with (Across the great divide 1976) Hey this is the one with the 2 kids, I dig this one. We reviewed the Sea Gypsies with Robert Logan a bit ago, and I was very surprised that he was in about 6 nature movies in the 70's. What is going on world. This one is waaaaay better than what's to come in my opinion. Ok I'm done, thank you very much for listening, please subscribe and give us some stars, and mayhems a sweet or not sweet review, it super helps, thanks.

You know how it is, you want Greta Garbo in your next Hollywood Talkie, but she's awkward and weird and won't get on the phone, you need Salka Viertel.Weimar Theatre Actress, Consummate Hostess, tireless anti-fascist, Garbo whisperer. You might not have heard of Salka Viertel but some of the greatest connections and collaborations made in the early years of Hollywood happened in Salka Viertel's Santa Monica living room. A life touched over and over by tragedy but always focussed on love and togetherness, Salka's life has become somewhat forgotten, showing our habit of overlooking the often invisible work of hosting, caring and bringing people together. You can can in touch and book Jonny or Pip for a tour of Berlin via www.whitlams-berlin-tours.com.

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December. We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection. We start with the highly requested TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films. But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release. The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film. Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release. Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Power, Best Actress winner Juice Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer. We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film. Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louise Jourdan, and James Mason. We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Milos Rossa and their importance to the film. And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film. We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh. This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.Purchase links:TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932)MADAME BOVARY (1949)THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936)GENTLEMAN JIM (1942)ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. The couple's view of life serves it up big with takes and tales of Christmas cheer, Jimmy Fallon, restaurants, Greta Garbo, road tripping, soapy streaming, and even more. It's a fun ride!
Who the hell is Greta Garbo? From her alleged espionage endeavors with plans to assassinate Hitler to passionate secret lesbian romances, this Old Hollywood icon lived a life worth discussing (although she would hate that we are doing so). Her intense desire for privacy over fame led her to quit acting at a young age but that didn't stop the media from being obsessed with her, particularly her dietary habits, love life, and the adventures she got into with her dietician Gaylord Hauser. Garbo is the paradox of a woman both revered and misunderstood, and you'll never believe what she kept under her couch. Greta Garbo in New York! A story of freedom, glamour, and melancholy, set at the intersection of classic Hollywood and mid-century New York City. The biography of a legendary star who became the city's most famous 'celebrity sighting' for many decades while out on her regular, meandering walks.Garbo had once been Hollywood's biggest star, a screen goddess who survived the transition from silent pictures to sound in such movies as Grand Hotel, Queen Christina, and Camille. But her career was over by the 1940s, her exotic and distant screen presence no longer appealing in the years of World War II.And so the actress -- famous for her line "I WANT TO BE ALONE" -- moved to New York City and stayed here for the rest of her life, living in a fabulous apartment near Beekman Place on the east side of Manhattan. Her favorite activity was walking, two long trips a day in her dark glasses and trench coat, committed to freedom of urban exploration and enjoying a livelihood in the city that we all take for granted. In attempting to live her life freely, however, she opened herself to the intrusive behavior of others — some obsessed with her as an iconic movie star, others simply gravitating to her elusive reputation. By the 1970s and surging by the 80s, Garbo sightings became a popular urban scavenger hunt. You had Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and Greta Garbo! William Gargan appeared in more than fifty films in the 1930s. In between, he and Mary's second son, Leslie, was born on June 28th, 1933. The Gargans bought the late Jean Harlow's house at 512 North Palm Drive for twenty-seven thousand dollars. They'd live there for the next quarter century. Bill's parents passed away in the middle of the decade. Gargan soon signed a Warner Bros. two-year contract that paid him one-hundred-thousand dollars, turning down the role of Duke Mantee in Robert Sherwood's The Petrified Forest on Broadway to sign. The role went to friend Humphrey Bogart. For more info on Bogie, tune into Breaking Walls episode 140. Bill made his Lux Radio Theater debut on March 6th, 1939 in an adaptation of One Way Passage. Gargan hated working for Warner Bros. He likened it to sleeping on a bed of nails. The press labeled him “Bill Gargan, King of the B movies.” He later broke his contract. Perhaps his most famous role was as Joe in the 1940 RKO film, They Knew What They Wanted. Gargan received third billing behind Carole Lombard and Charles Laughton and was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The plot is: while visiting San Francisco, Tony Patucci — played by Laughton — an aging illiterate winegrower from the Napa Valley, sees waitress Amy Peters — played by Lombard — and falls in love. Tony gets his foreman Joe, a womanizer, to write her a letter in Tony's name. Tony's courtship culminates with a proposal. When she requests a picture of him, one of Joe is sent. Amy goes to Napa to be married, only to find that Joe isn't her husband-to-be. She decides to go through with the marriage. However, while Tony is in bed after an accident, Amy and Joe have an affair. Two months later Amy discovers she's pregnant. Upon learning of the infidelity, Tony pummels Joe, but forgives Amy, insisting they still be married. Unable to forgive herself, she leaves with the priest. Meanwhile, Gargan did more radio. He appeared on the January 4th, 1940 episode of The Good News with his former co-star Ann Sothern. Good News aired Thursdays at 9PM eastern time over NBC's Red Network. Its 16.9 rating was twelfth overall. Good News was the first major collaboration of a movie studio and a broadcasting system for a commercial sponsor.” The idea was, simply put, to “dazzle 'em with glitter.” MGM produced. Every star except Garbo was available. There would be songs, stories, comedy, and drama. In short, it promised an intimate glimpse of Hollywood with its hair down. The result cost Maxwell House $25,000 a week. Gargan was back on the program the following week in a one-act play opposite Lurene Tuttle. Bill was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar, won by good friend Walter Brennan for The Westerner. He later joked that Brennan spent ninety minutes spitting and Gargan lost to a spittoon. The joking was short-lived. Gargan would soon begin work on another film with the appropriate title, I Wake Up Screaming.
