Greg Kettner got started in comedy on a dare. After watching hockey with his buddies one night, on their way home they passed a pub that was holding an open mic night. After a couple drinks, he got the courage to stand up and tell some stories. The rush was so big, he returned the next week, and kept up the weekly routine until he got a call to become a comedy club emcee. From there, Greg hit the comedy circuit. For almost a decade, he toured North America, opening for no less the likes of Robin Williams, Jim Gaffigan, Norm MacDonald, and Gilbert Gottfried. But it was a lonely and financially unsatisfying place."The downside was I wasn't getting paid that much so it took me about six years to figure out that I like money more than I like standup," he said. "But now I've been able to combine the two."About four years ago, Greg founded WorkHappy, a coaching program that teaches corporate leaders how to communicate, remember where they want to go, how they want to get there, and how to blow off steam rather than "bottling it up and just blowing a gasket.""We spend two-thirds of our day, a lot of us working, and when we're not happy, it's a grind," he said.Working in suicide prevention and mental wellness, Greg also founded Men in the Middle, a fellowship program in his hometown of Walla Walla, Washington. The program enables bonding experiences and teaches men how to care for themselves and talk openly about mental health."If we take care of each other, take care of ourselves, the world's a much better place," he said.I met Greg through a mutual friend and I'm so glad I did. He made me laugh throughout this interview, and I'm sure you will too listening to his stories and natural timing. I'm sure I will be following his mantra to "laugh every day. Put it on your calendar."Greg also runs the Facebook group, The Humor Lab, which he launched during the pandemic lockdown. Nonpolitical and PG-13-rated, the group now has more than 38,000 members. I encourage you to look it up when you need a laugh. If you'd like to reach Greg, you can do so on LinkedIn or on his website, GregKettner.com. I hope you get a bellyfull of laughs from this week's podcast.

The Book Leads – Episode 49: Greg Kettner & Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz Greg speaks to how this book changed his view on finances, which, let's be honest, plays very much into our stress vs. peace of mind dynamic. It helped him organize and be disciplined about his business finances, freeing him to focus his energy for helping more people. I have a deep appreciation for Greg's work because, well, I love laughing. Yes, I know, most people do. But I NEED a good laugh every day. That, honestly, is my measure of a great day: At some point in the day, did I enjoy what I was doing enough to let out a good laugh? Greg, a former professional comedian who is also the Founder of WorkHappy™ Nation, understands that power of happiness and laughter, and also how it's residual ripple effect can enhance our work environments, success, and profits. In this world we're living in, filled with tension, stress, anxiety, and chaos, we can't leave our happiness to chance. Whatever level of happiness it is that each of us needs, we need to be proactive and intentional about setting the stage for it. In our conversation, Greg breaks down how his mission to bring more intentional happiness to the workplace began and the results he achieves for his clients. I also appreciate the awareness Greg brings to men's mental health. For far too long the stigma of talking about mental health has kept men from both expressing ourselves and getting the help we need. I was introduced to Greg by Darrin Tulley, Founder and Chief of Possibilities at Ignite Happy, and I interviewed Darrin in Episode 21 of this series on his book, Live Your Possible: Ignite Your Happy, Authentic Self and Live a Fulfilling Life Rooted in Joy, Inclusion, Love, and Possibilities. Episode Highlights The question that set Greg on his current journey: “Why don't you go and help other people work happy?” The Zone of Service is magical. How do we be more human? We've gotten away from it. Every point made about men's mental health. What we can all learn from Billy Joel. The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Greg is, Whether as an organization or an individual, what intentional steps are you taking to make your happiness and mental health a priority throughout the day? Greg's Bio Greg Kettner is a TEDx Keynote Speaker, Trainer, and Coach who uses the WorkHappy Program to assist leaders and organizations in reducing stress, boosting productivity, and fostering a culture of mental health mindfulness. In his talk "The Power of Laughter" he shares how businesses can inspire and empower their workforce by putting people before profits. WorkHappy businesses succeed by ensuring that voices are heard, opinions and perspectives are valued, and that discussions about mental health take place in the workplace. Is laughter the best medicine?  How does laughter improve our happiness? Today we are expanding on a TED Talk with one big idea, that we can all make our world a better place one laugh at a time.     Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.    I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and I was watching a TED Talk on changing the world with laughter.  I'll link in the show notes. The speaker, stand-up-comedian Greg Kettner believes that laughter gets us through life. Because “when we laugh we connect and when we connect, our hearts are open and when our hearts are open, the world is a better place.”     But the staggering statistics are that kids laugh up to 300 times a day where adults laugh only 17 times a day.   He asks the audience a thought provoking question:  do we not laugh because we are stressed or are we so stressed we don't have time to laugh?    The big idea in this TED Talk was that we can all make our world a better place one laugh at a time.     I was thinking about this as it relates to happiness, because if you've listened for a bit, we know, happiness is not just emotions like laughing, but also purpose and satisfaction.  It's undeniable that one of the best ways to achieve fulfilled happiness is through social connection. See where I'm going with this.    When you hang out with your friends and you laugh the night away, how do you feel?  My mom is a great storyteller and she tells the tales of her experiences and they are funny.  She's done some stupid stuff that she laughs about all the time.  Everyone loves going to her house.  If she's had a few beers, she'll “hold court” and people will be hanging on her every word.     My friend Sue, she lives around the corner from me.  She's like my mom.  She's got an arsenal of funny stories, sharing about life.  We sit around her outdoor table, sometimes when it's chilly, we bring our blankets, and we always laugh.     Laughter is a gift.  It's a gift we can give others. Not all of us are as gifted at inspiring laughter. But what a gift it is.  Even in school, my kids can tell you who the funny kids are.  They can also recognize the nuance between a class clown, a self-deprecating funny guy, a kind funny kid or the kid that uses others to get a laugh - which they know is a total turn off and needs to be stopped.    I think people want to laugh.  They want to be prompted to laugh. It's harder as adults, the research is undeniable.  We need to laugh more. Perhaps we are intentional about finding our laugh tribe.  Who is it in your life that brings laughter into your world?        Until next time, remember, kindness is contagious.    Get Everyday Happiness delivered to your inbox by subscribing at: https://www.katiejefcoat.com/happiness   And, let's connect on social at @everydayhappinesswithkatie  and join the community on the hashtags #IntentionalMargins and #everydayhappinesswithkatie on Instagram   Links:  https://onamission.bio/everydayhappiness/   Inspired by: https://www.ted.com/talks/greg_kettner_change_the_world_with_laughter?fbclid=IwAR0zibGOMsFrdfzOfrlsWd0VMCmBnChotSjw4EPwmo7qt71e3xOSxbFYxj4
