This spring I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. In this first bonus episode of Season 5, I'm sharing "Beyond the Scoreboard" which was created and produced by Carmen Kennett, Brody Grieb, and Cam Smith. Here are their liner notes: In the premier of the first season of Beyond The Scoreboard, we were lucky enough to spend 25 minutes speaking with Drew Bledsoe, the first overall draft pick of the 1993 NFL draft and 2002 Super Bowl champion. Drew's leadership both on and off the field has left a lasting impact on many people worldwide. Alongside his wife Maura, Drew is also an entrepreneur as he now spends most of his time managing his company, Doubleback winery. Drew spends time telling us a bit about what it was like to be a young man charged with the task of leading an NFL team and the difficulties he faced when forced to sign with other teams. Pay attention as he continuously relates his experience as a leader in the NFL to his experience as a leader in the business world. We introduce Drew to chapter 12 and chapter 13 of Peter G. Northouse's Leadership, which discusses the ideas of inclusive leadership and the importance of followership. Listen as Drew tells us a couple of personal experiences that relate exactly to those topics, and the importance that those experiences were throughout the remainder of his career. He spends time talking about the importance of diversity amongst a team, the value in proving your worthiness through work ethic, and how the best thing an aspiring leader can do is find influential mentors. You can reach Drew at @DrewBledsoe via X, and @drewbledsoe via Instagram. Doubleback winery can be found at https://www.doubleback.com/ Music used in this episode of Beyond the Scoreboard comes from Free Music Archive! It is titled “Breaking Bad” by Jahzzar. This week friend, listener, Patron, and wine diva @wineshenanigans and the wine game show @Wineopardy Monica G. joins to talk with me about wines made by celebrities, aka Celebrity Wines. We run through what they are, how many of them are made and then we discuss specifics. We wrap with our analysis of whether or not we would recommend buying these wines. We make two caveats: 1. These are our opinions about these wines – don't sue me! 2. Some of these brands are impossible to obtain, so we haven't had many of them – distribution is spotty Then we define, explain, and then categorize these wines -- those that are legit and those that are not. Some of the legit celeb wine brands we discuss are: Francis Ford Coppola, Fess Parker, Brad Pitt/Miraval, Dave Matthews with Blenheim and Dreaming Tree, Pink's Two Wolves, Drew Bledsoe's Doubleback wines, Kyle MacLachlan's Pursued by Bear wines, Kylie Minogue's wines, and Mary J. Why is Colin on the defence train this week? Why are we excited to talk about ZZ Top? Does this movie have the best score out of the three of them? Would this movie have worked if the plot was used as the ending to the last one? Is this Thomas Wilson's best performance? Why are we excited for Doc to get laid? What do we think of Clara? Why is Ben excited to talk about Seamus, or is it Shameless? What would we do in the Wild West if we were there? Is the kid at the end the creepiest kid in all of movies? Why does Ben hate sparks? And is this the perfect ending to the most perfect trilogy in movie history? Tisha and Damo hold down this episode, covering a wide range of topics, to include what to expect from our next episode. The cat's out the bag as Damo confesses that he sat this year's CPO Selection board and cannot wait to talk about it next week. A Virginia Beach Sailor recently hit the jackpot for 1.8 million. What would you do if you were in his shoes? The power of embracing new initiatives is discussed. Damo asks Tisha how her military experiences have impacted her personality. This leads to a conversation about past jobs and experiences. Tisha brings up the fact that there are people out there married military members for benefits. Why are there so many rumors of infidelity in military households? Well, because unfortunately in a lot of cases, it's true. Tisha admits that she struggles with tardiness and it trying her best to “do better.” Damo admits that he gets nervous when people that he knows check out the podcast for the first time. The duo speaks about professionalism when it comes to initially greeting senior leadership. Is it over for “technical expertise”? Drew Bledsoe never complained, even when he thought he deserved another chance. How was he so composed the entire year after being replaced by Tom Brady, following a devastating injury in 2001? “I'm the son of two teachers from Walla, Walla, Washington,” he said, “I wasn't raised to complain.” It's been 21 years since Drew, who'd signed an NFL record $103 million contract with the Patriots, was annihilated by Jet linebacker Mo Lewis - a sideline collision that changed the course of sports history. Drew and Lesley talked about that week, that year – when the Patriots won their first Super Bowl – and Drew's thoughts on seeing Brady return to Foxboro. He had a kindred experience when he returned to New England with the Buffalo Bills, a day he called “completely nerve-wracking.” Now the successful owner of Doubleback Winery, Drew calls selling cabernet sauvignon and the NFL “equally competitive, just different playbooks.” The study of wine and wine-making have taken Drew and his wife Maura all around the world, with Argentina next on their list. And in the ultimate irony, the name of Drew's winemaker is Josh McDaniels.
