Brian Thompson loves a good spreadsheet, and in this episode, he's sharing some of his best tips for tracking metrics in a manageable, mission-aligned way. You'll learn how intentional tracking can help mission-driven entrepreneurs gain clarity, celebrate progress, and make better decisions. Drawing inspiration from investor and writer Sahil Bloom's Five Types of Wealth, Brian offers practical tools to help you track progress without it becoming a full-time job. Episode Highlights Tracking creates accountability Tracking transforms assumptions into awareness. If you're not measuring something, it's easy to tell yourself stories — I think I'm doing okay, or I feel behind. But those stories may or may not be true. Tracking brings reality into focus, creating accountability, strategy, and visible progress, shifting from emotional decision-making to data-informed clarity. Five types of wealth to track for mission-driven entrepreneurs Sahil Bloom is an investor, writer, and entrepreneur whose framework for thinking of wealth in five key domains — time, physical, mental, social, and financial wealth — can also be adapted for entrepreneurs building mission-driven businesses. Tracking across all areas of wealth can give you a holistic picture of your business and your life. Time Wealth: How intentionally do you use your time? Are you working on your business or just in it? Social Wealth: Who are you connecting with? Do your clients, colleagues, or communities energize you or make you cringe? Mental Wealth: Are your decisions aligned with your purpose? Do you set time aside for a regular check-in on your mental well-being? Physical Wealth: Are you prioritizing rest, nourishment, and movement? Are you moving throughout the day? Financial Wealth: Do your finances support your ability to stay mission-driven and resilient? Are you able to meet all of your obligations? Start small and make it yours Tracking doesn't have to be complicated. To prevent overwhelm, pick one area to focus on first and use simple tools such as journaling, scorecards, spreadsheets, or apps to help you track your progress. Remember: The key is consistency, not perfection. Designate a specific day and time to review your data and choose a cadence you can stick to. Build your own Wealth Dashboard As a bonus, consider building a simple "Wealth Dashboard" to visualize your progress. Using tools like Google Sheets or Notion, log weekly or monthly metrics for each wealth category and spot imbalances before they become problems. Brian Thompson chats with Rachel Bernier-Green, founder and CEO of the Economic Justice Consortium, a Chicago-based firm that helps mission-driven businesses sustain and amplify their impact through financial and operational excellence. A recovering public accountant turned social entrepreneur, Rachel has dedicated her career to closing the racial wealth gap and redefining what it means to lead with purpose and profit. In this episode, Rachel shares her journey from climbing the corporate ladder in public accounting, to running a social enterprise bakery that partnered with Whole Foods and Starbucks, and now guiding other entrepreneurs in building sustainable, values-driven businesses. She opens up about burnout, courage, and the lessons learned from failure, as well as how she helps clients reject hustle culture and build wealth for their communities. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses focus on impact and income. Rachel defines a mission-driven business as one that "has a focus other than profit maximization." Whether seeking to improve the environment, society, or treatment of employees, mission-driven businesses aim to make a positive net impact. "People think if they have a greater purpose, they also don't need to focus on profit," Rachel said. "If you lose that focus on profit, your mission ceases to exist." Turn loss into leadership. Rachel's first entrepreneurial endeavor came when she left a toxic corporate environment and turned to baking as a stress outlet. Her bakery partnered with regenerative farms and hired previously incarcerated individuals, creating jobs that reduced recidivism in her Chicago community. Nine years after starting her first company, a combination of a tragic ceiling collapse and the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately led to the business's closure. While it felt like a failure at the time, the experience led her to a bigger purpose — founding the Economic Justice Consortium to help other mission-driven businesses build sustainable success. "There are some things you can only learn by going through a business that ends," she said. "I do think that business needed to come to an end for me to do the work that I'm doing now, which will have a much more significant impact on the world." Track your Objectives and Key Results (OKRs). Economic Justice Consortium offers fractional CFO services and consulting services for operational systems and big-picture strategy. The firm also relies heavily on the Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) strategic framework, which breaks down specific objectives based on the larger company mission and vision. "We actually utilize our task management tool to track those objectives," she said. "It incorporates a level of accountability. There's an internal dashboard that the entire team has access to in real time, and they can see whether we're on track or not on track with any of our OKRs." Rebuke hustle culture. Rachel recommended the book "Laziness Does Not Exist" by Chicago professor Devin Price, which challenges the culture of overwork and redefines productivity. The book explores how the American work culture is misaligned with data science on productivity and has transformed how Rachel approaches her work and her expectations for her team. "Hustle culture is very damaging on so many levels," she said. "The book challenged me so much I had to sit down and come back to it because I had always prided myself on my work ethic and putting in the hours." We're diving deeper into the bookkeeping, the accounting, and the expenses we can write off so that we are not paying the IRS as much. We're getting credit for running our business because we're already paying a self-employment tax. We might as well take off these additional write-offs so we're not penalized for making more money. But we're doing this so we face our numbers, learn our numbers, and know where we're going. My guest Serena Shoup is a corporate CPA turned bookkeeping business CEO. The Book Leads – Episode 49: Greg Kettner & Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz Greg speaks to how this book changed his view on finances, which, let's be honest, plays very much into our stress vs. peace of mind dynamic. It helped him organize and be disciplined about his business finances, freeing him to focus his energy for helping more people. I have a deep appreciation for Greg's work because, well, I love laughing. Yes, I know, most people do. But I NEED a good laugh every day. That, honestly, is my measure of a great day: At some point in the day, did I enjoy what I was doing enough to let out a good laugh? Greg, a former professional comedian who is also the Founder of WorkHappy™ Nation, understands that power of happiness and laughter, and also how it's residual ripple effect can enhance our work environments, success, and profits. In this world we're living in, filled with tension, stress, anxiety, and chaos, we can't leave our happiness to chance. Whatever level of happiness it is that each of us needs, we need to be proactive and intentional about setting the stage for it. In our conversation, Greg breaks down how his mission to bring more intentional happiness to the workplace began and the results he achieves for his clients. I also appreciate the awareness Greg brings to men's mental health. For far too long the stigma of talking about mental health has kept men from both expressing ourselves and getting the help we need. I was introduced to Greg by Darrin Tulley, Founder and Chief of Possibilities at Ignite Happy, and I interviewed Darrin in Episode 21 of this series on his book, Live Your Possible: Ignite Your Happy, Authentic Self and Live a Fulfilling Life Rooted in Joy, Inclusion, Love, and Possibilities. Episode Highlights The question that set Greg on his current journey: “Why don't you go and help other people work happy?” The Zone of Service is magical. How do we be more human? We've gotten away from it. Every point made about men's mental health. What we can all learn from Billy Joel. The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Greg is, Whether as an organization or an individual, what intentional steps are you taking to make your happiness and mental health a priority throughout the day? Greg's Bio Greg Kettner is a TEDx Keynote Speaker, Trainer, and Coach who uses the WorkHappy Program to assist leaders and organizations in reducing stress, boosting productivity, and fostering a culture of mental health mindfulness. In his talk "The Power of Laughter" he shares how businesses can inspire and empower their workforce by putting people before profits. WorkHappy businesses succeed by ensuring that voices are heard, opinions and perspectives are valued, and that discussions about mental health take place in the workplace. Coca-Cola, RE/MAX, Ford Motor Company, iCIMS, TractionGuest, Vizier, SunLife Financial, and the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games are just a few of the companies that now WorkHappy. You can take four weeks of vacation, and your practice could run better than is currently is. In fact, you could take a full year off. If that sounds like something you'd like to do - but it sounds too good to be true - then you need to listen to this podcast. Mike Michalowicz, renowned author of the best-selling book Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine, joins Regan and Dr. Chad in this episode to share life-changing advice you can apply to your business right now to build the lifestyle and business you deserve.
It is important to keep your mind clear, have a balanced diet, and maintain a regular exercise regimen to shape your personal development. The job goes beyond just ensuring money is coming in or the job is completed. In order to execute the right plan for your business, you must also allow your knowledge to grow. Proper education will not only help you add mastership to your profession but will also give you an idea of what's the wise thing to do in a difficult situation. Those were the details of our conversation. Our discussion focused on how home service business owners can shape their personal development. In response to Molly's questions, I provided some tips and methods on how to exercise these practices. Which is the main focus of Jobber's summit this upcoming 1st of March. The goal is to provide small business owners with seminars and coaching to help them develop themselves. Join us in this exciting event that you can register for free. Moly Milosovic leads Jobber's brand marketing and communications. Using brand partnerships, influencer marketing, communications, community programs, media relations, social media, and virtual and in-person activations, her team creates demand in a new market category, home service. “I gotta say that someone on the outside looking in-home service is this really awesome community, and honestly, green industry, landscaping lawn care are really ahead of the curve where there's no gatekeeping, everybody's sharing knowledge with each other, and sharing what worked, what didn't work for them in the past, that's really great.” - Moly Milosovic Why do you have to listen to today's episode. 1:13 - “My functional title, as I like to say, well, if this is true, is Director of Brand Marketing and Communications. But what I actually think makes more sense is Head of Community. And that's because I work with a team that is kind of focused on two things, one community initiative to share knowledge and learnings throughout home service.” A brief introduction to Moly Milosovic. Here's a little bit about how she got started in what she does now as Director of Brand Marketing and Communications at Jobber. 4:00 “So then I get down this path of like, oh my god, communication and the articulation of your communication, how well do you define the space in which you communicate? How well do you put rails up on your messaging and say, you know, we stand for this, which means we don't stand for this, and then being lukewarm.” During the conversation, Keith and Molly discuss the importance of communication in curving your personal development. 7:55 “Sometimes we get these life-changing epiphanies like we hear a very specific piece of information that's calibrated at the perfect time. And then what it does is, it's the one domino that connects all these other dots. And you wake up in your business, like if you're a landscape business, and it's the one thing that helps you overcome the fears.” During this interview, Keith talks about his life-changing epiphanies as a business owner. 14:25 “My friend Joshua Latimer said to me he's like, what's the most amount of money you've ever invested in your unlike a coaching program, I look like two grand he goes, that's the problem. You need to invest like five or 10 or 20 grand and then really put something on the line.” Keith recommends joining a mastermind group or coaching program not only to help you achieve personal growth but also to scale your business. Investing in your education is the best way to build a strong foundation to level up your business. 19:21 “So fitness is very important. So he said, like you said, consistency over intensity. Yeah. So I set these tiny little goals like, I'm just going to do 20 Push Ups. That's all I have to do today. And if I jog, I don't have a job. But I just had the power walk one time around the block. And it's like, so if you force yourself to jujitsu, that little tiny workout, but you got to do it.” Keith points out that when it comes to developing your personal development, it doesn't always refer to your mental health, but also to your physical health. He emphasized taking care of his health by doing some exercise that also helps him clear his head. 29:02 “In the Millionaire Mind book by T Harv. Eker. He talks about 80% Go. So he talks about not being a perfectionist. He says there's a saying I love it's like, don't wait till you get good until you get going, and then you'll get good. Right? Molly asked Keith the question about entrepreneurs being too hard on themselves. “If entrepreneurs are really hard on themselves. So there's this idea that you're doing it wrong. Or if you do it, you could think that you're not doing it the way you're supposed to or that you give up if you don't do it perfectly.” If you listen carefully, you will be surprised by his answer. Key Takeaways “So I believe you have to get clear about the muck in your life in the places you're wasting time. And maybe you're bringing out, eating too much fast food and falling asleep, or you have toxic habits, identify all that stuff, and then go to work on that stuff to get that stuff out of the way once you let go of the heavy buckets of concrete or the sandbags or that things holding you down to the toxic relationship that you spent too much time or, you know, once you can get rid of that it's like, Whoa, it's like holding a beach ball under water. And it's so hard to do because it takes so much might, and then you finally let go, and the thing just pops up to the top and just starts floating on top of the water. Why? Because that's its natural state. So what I mean by that is now you can free up all this mental and emotional bandwidth before you can actually start to receive more new information. You might have to get rid of old stuff.” - Keith Kalfas “You could be could read a book, listen to a podcast, come to an event like dauber Summit. And you'll get, hopefully, really tangible information. But then the idea of, okay, I want to go deeper on this topic, or I want to go even better in this and then invest in a course or a coach. What that speaks to me about is accountability. I personally like setting up meetings to meet with people. So I have like an every three-week meeting with a mentor. When I'm reading a book, I often like to find someone in my life or on my team to a book club with so that I have to have notes ready to talk to them about it every couple of weeks.” - Moly Milosovic “We look up to people, and we think that they're perfect. I like how we're trading epiphanies here because that reminds me of another quote that I recently heard about how if you see someone doing something at that expert level for the 100th time they're doing it, you have to remember that they did have a first time that they did that thing. And it did not go that well. That's how they became an expert. It's not that they woke up one day and they were just magically bestowed with that talent. So yeah, the people we look up to aren't perfect, and they have totally screwed up. But they had the bravery.” - Moly Milosovic JOBBER SUMMIT Jobber Summit is an annual, free online event where home service business owners and management teams can connect with their community and get the expert advice they need to reach new heights of success in their businesses. ● Registration link: https://go.getjobber.com/Kalfas-JobberSummit-23?utm_source=PS_ambassador&utm_medium=keithkalfas8521 ● Event takes place on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 ○ Morning Event: 10 am–2 pm ET | Evening Event: 6–10 pm ET Sample Copy On March 1, reach new heights at Jobber Summit! Therefore, it's important to take time to reflect and look back on maybe what's working, what's not working, and what's missing in your business. In this episode, I'm going to share with you FIVE things that I plan to start, stop, and continue doing in 2023, as I begin to prepare myself to set goals and have a successful new year. Today's guest is Susie Jackson, a finance and pricing mentor for freelancers from the U.K. Susie helps freelancers figure out how much to charge and how to manage the financial side of our businesses so we can earn a decent living doing what we love. Susie is also a freelance copy editor and a Spanish-to-English translator specializing in academic texts for the social sciences. Susie likes that she's able to build her business around her energy levels. She also builds in one weekday per month to get out into nature, which is critical for her mental health. A few years ago Susie became a financial and pricing mentor. Her dad was in banking, so she grew up with healthy conversations and lessons about money. She began offering her “Charge with Confidence” group program in 2020. Susie doesn't like the approach that many people take: setting their rates based on industry averages or what other people charge. There's no guarantee that those rates will cover your needs, which can result in a feeling of helplessness and defeatist attitude. And that often means that clients are dictating what they can charge. Susie believes we as service providers should be setting our own prices—and do so based on what income we need, not what we think our customers can afford. Not every client is going to have the budget to pay your rate. That's normal. If you're never hearing ‘no,' you could probably be charging more. Value and affordability are two different things. Susie recommends including two options when submitting a quote or a proposal. One quote should align with their brief, but then include a second quote at a lower rate, which requires them to compromise on something. “A negotiation is a compromise.” Providing two (or more) choices is much better than saying, “I'm open to negotiation,” which Susie never recommends saying to a potential client. Before pricing a project, we need to do some groundwork. The first thing is to understand your financial needs for both your business and personal expenses and then know what your minimum financial goal is—and then also set an aspirational goal. You also need to figure out how many hours you can realistically do paid work without burning out. We tend to overestimate our available hours, and the only way to beat this is by tracking time, which helps us see what is realistic and sustainable. Susie also talks in detail about when and how we should think about increasing our rates. She also gives advice on what language to use with clients when raising your rates. Susie chimes in to the debate of whether we should put our rates on our websites. Susie recommends a “profit first” system, which is based off the book “Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine” by Mike Michalowicz. The book wasn't written for freelancers, but Susie goes into detail of how she's adapted this philosophy for her business. Susie also talks about how to track our proposals, projects and finances. Susie does not believe that people are inherently bad with money. When people say, “Oh, I'm just bad with money,” she replies, “How can you expect to be good with money if you've never been taught how to manage it?” Biz Bite: Use a Task Prioritization Grid Resources: Susie's website Susie's free resources, including a budgeting spreadsheet, virtual Finance Fridays office hours, blog posts and more. Last fall, I shared an epiphany I had on Instagram and it kinda blew up! I had just scaled to $20K+ months and had way more time freedom than I did at $10K months because I was able to afford a team to support me. So many business owners have a goal to hit $8K to $10K months to hit the elusive six-figure mark, but it can actually be way more challenging to run your business at that level than at the $20K+ mark. In this episode, I'm sharing how my exact 2021 Profit Strategy and how it helped me transition from a burned out service provider to a blissed out CEO with a full team. If you're feeling more stuck in your business despite hitting those glamorized revenue targets, this episode is for you! Do you have a question or topic you'd like me to cover on the show? Click here to send us your submission! Resources mentioned: Check out my IG post about running your business at $20K months Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Michael Michalowicz Some key takeaways on how my Profit Strategy helped me scale for more financial and time freedom: When I hit the $20K+ per month level, I was able to hire a team, including someone to manage my other team members and client relationships, which freed up way more time and energy for me to work on my business. When I was ready to scale my business, I first took three months to stabilize my business by revamping my offers, raising my pricing on certain offers, and making the decision to discontinue certain offers. Stabilizing before you scale is so important, otherwise things can fall apart when you do start seeing that revenue increase. When it comes to the sales and marketing activities needed to bring in clients or customers to help you scale, evaluate your current marketing and sales spending and figure out which things are worth continuing to invest in. What brings in the most leads? What are your conversion rates from sales calls to closed leads? Identify where you can improve your numbers. In this second of four back-to-back episodes about personal care products, Leslie Arthur discusses how she started her first business in Hawaii 16 years ago and organized the most recent business, now seven years old. She shares practical advice about research and development; selling retail, wholesale, and by consignment; and strategies to make product lines more cost effective and accessible. Leslie started making and selling soap, bath, and body products when she and her boyfriend, now husband, lived in Hawaii in 2004. This was a practical decision, based on opportunity, access to unique flowers and fragrances, limited regulation, and access to a tourist market. But it was also a rush to sell her own products, sometimes hundreds of products a day. And it made more sense than selling food, another interest of hers. Fast-forward a decade and Leslie re-created her business as an alternative to a desk job and a way to manage her family life. Now in Richmond, Virginia, Leslie lives close to the largest farmers' market in the state. This has given her huge opportunities to learn from her customers, streamline her product line, and grow her in-person business. Similar to many of us, though, the onset of Coronavirus changed Leslie's business. She had to pivot to online sales—a difficult transition. In doing so, Leslie's resilience and creativity has led to savvy sales strategies. Learn how Leslie has adapted her business approach, including an updated website (version #3), production, and sales. You can find out more about Leslie's business at https://www.facebook.com/BonAirNaturals and https://www.instagram.com/bonairnaturals/ as well as purchase her products at www.bonairnaturals.com. Do you ever feel like greater success is locked behind a slightly immoral decision? My guest today is Robert Klinck, an intellectual property attorney from Washington DC, and CEO of the game-changing legal advice company Klinck LLC. He knows how to find success and hold onto his morals. Growing up in McAllen, Texas, Robert always knew he was the brightest of the bright and things always came easily to him. However, when he arrived at Harvard Law School, he had to face his reality: He was just a small fish in a big sea of sharks. Once he graduated from Harvard, Robert worked for a large law firm and then as a prosecutor in Fort Worth, Texas. While working his first job, Robert was mentored by now Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch, who taught him that a lawyer can be both good at their job and a good person. Robert watched his colleagues and friends chase prestige and glamour, and wasn't interested. He wanted to be a good lawyer, but he wanted to be an even better man. Throughout his career, Robert has faced situations where he had to choose between perfect and good. Slight moral compromise and easy trial wins or do the right thing and have to fight harder? Robert speaks in this episode about how his decisions to do the right thing improved his life. Specifically, he has more peaces of mind and a comfortable lifestyle, all without compromising his morals. If you've faced a choice between what's right and hard and what's slightly immoral but easier, this conversation is for you. If you want to be simultaneously a good man and successful, take the time to learn from Robert's mistakes. And if you're a hard worker, but feel that you lack the decisiveness to make real progress, hit play in the bar above. Listen to this episode to hear from law expert Robert Klinck on how to find success and stay honest, and much more: Why you can't even trust your best friends when setting up agreements The emotion you should learn to control to be more successful (and a nicer guy) Why courage is as important as hard work The one attribute that Robert craves for more productivity A superior method for stress relief Why anger is a ‘peacock' emotion How to correctly view and manage profit for your business The perfect ratio of family happiness and career success Books and Resources mentioned in this episode: "Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine," by Mike Michalowicz "The Entrepreneur's IP Planning Playbook: A Strategy Guide To Help Solopreneurs, Startup Founders, and Entrepreneurs Harness Their Intellectual Capital," by Robert Klinck "Patent Litigation Primer: A Guide For Inventors And Business Owners," by Robert Klinck How to contact Robert Klinck: Visit his website.
