Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne metalcore/deathcore/techdeath outfit Roswell DeathSquad have been making waves since the release of their debut album Welcome Home in January this year.Which isn't surprising given the pedigree of musicians within the band's ranks. Featuring past and present members of Festation, Harlott, Carthus, Mistress of Misery and Fear the Fallen, Roswell DeathSquad have not only the hunger to succeed but also the experience, which is an almost forgotten prerequisite for success in the modern age. After playing their first live show back in August last year, Roswell Deathsquad are hoping to convert even more fans on March 30 when they play a belated album launch show at the Workers Club in Melbourne.Vocalist Jarryd Rodger joined HEAVY to talk about the album and more."Pretty good," he replied when we asked how Welcome Home has been received. "A lot of feedback that we have had has been absolutely phenomenal. Whether it be old mate down the street or a few people overseas, everyone has been loving it. It hits the heavy mark, it hits the metalcore mark as well, so it gives everyone a bit of everything rather than getting stale which is what we aim for. It's been received a lot better than we anticipated, especially releasing it randomly at the start of the year. Our Spotify numbers are sitting at 2 to 3000 every month and for a new band that no-one really knows that's good."In the full interview, Jarryd talks more about Welcome Home, what they were going for musically with it, what things they focussed on going into album number one, the themes and points of interest, the members other bands and how much of each they bring to Roswell DeathSquad's sound, their blending of music and how it works, next week's album launch and more.
Episode #47 first Kam and Pete talk their Halloween memories and rituals. Then they bring in guests David Ingram from BENEDICTION, Andrew Hudson from HARLOTT, Eduardo Jarry from BEHAVIOUR, and Michael Grim of GRIM AND THE HERETICS to discUss Halloween!!
Episode #31 this is the lost live episode which was recorded at the Forsthaus, Dechsendorf 5 July 2023. It's Kam & Pete and special guest Andrew from Harlott. Truly funny episode and was awesome start to the tour..
Interview by Kris PetersTim 'Ripper' Owens name and voice is legendary in the metal scene. Not only has he sung for Judas Priest and KK's Priest among others, but he has also forged a successful solo career and travelled around the world performing songs from bands that have played a large part in his career as a musician. One of those was Metal Gods, a band that paid tribute to Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Dio in which Owens performed with ex AC/DC and Dio drummer Simon Wright. Metal Gods toured Australia for the first time late last year to rave reviews, leaving everyone who went to one of the shows in awe at the abundance of talent Owens possesses. Now, just six months later, Owens returns Down Under for two shows only - at the Crowbar in Sydney on May 11 and at The Bendigo Hotel in Melbourne on May 12.This time he will team up with members from Frankie's World Famous House Band, Harlott and Bad Moon Born to perform an even greater variety of songs from bands that have shaped metal music in general. He is treating these two shows as a tester of sorts towards booking a national tour next year, with the onus on Sydney and Melbourne proving there is a demand for more of his solo and own material.Owens joined HEAVY this morning from Brazil to tell us more. We start by asking if he has even unpacked after his last visit here not so long ago."I've unpacked and packed and unpacked and packed," he laughed. "It's just been non-stop. I'm doing this now from South America in Brazil. I was in England working on the new videos for KK's Priest, I flew home from England after doing a week there and was home one day then I flew here and then I'm going home for one day and flying there. This was last minute I decided to come there to Australia and we're gonna test the waters and do a couple of shows - it's like a test shows - and see if we can book a full tour in the future."Last time he was out here Owens was touring with Simon Wright, but this time around he is coming out by himself."It's just me playing my songs," he affirmed. "I called Joel to see if he could get some guys together and he was all for it. He got his brother and some friends. It's gonna be a blast. The setlist is great, we're doing some songs I haven't done in a while like Diamonds And Rust and we're doing something from my new solo EP, so it's a nice set list."In the full interview Ripper talks more about what songs to expect, the response to his latest album, finding the time to write new material, how these two shows will be different from what Australian audiences saw last time, assembling a band to play the songs and learning them in a short space of time, how he approaches singing songs from iconic bands, future touring plans and more.

Andrew is the guitarist in Desecrator and the guitarist and vocalist in Harlott. It's not bragging to say that both bands are amongst the most important heavy metal bands in Australia today. Both groups command international attention and Harlott are signed to Metal Blade. The catalyst for the chat is the launch of Summoning, the new album for 2021 from Desecrator. We talk about all sorts of stuff in this episode, so enjoy!
Australian thrash metal masters DESECRATOR are back with their new album ‘Summoning' out August 27.'SUMMONING' is best described as a backwards sounding, yet forward movingstatement in heavy metal. An album that challenges the bands thrash metal roots but reinforces theirdominance in this field. A diverse cross section of song writing maturity, shown through tonal light and shade, rhythmic refrain and a greater focus onthe song and its destination. Not only that, DESECRATOR are teaming up with THE ASCENDED and HARLOTT for a full on metal assault across down under kicking off on September 4 at Hell On The Bay in Melbourne and taking them into the start of 2022 and beyond! The Everblack Podcast sat down with DESECRATOR drummer Jared Roberts to talk about the monstrous new album ‘Summoning', upcoming tour with The Ascended and Harlott, their adventures hitting the road in Europe with Airborne and more!Pre-Save 'SUMMONING' Album: https://ffm.to/summoning-albumVinyl, CD & digital pre-order: http://desecrator.netDESECRATOR, THE ASCENDED and HARLOTT performing at:Sept 4 - Melbourne - Hell On The Bay*Sept 24 - Ballarat - VoltaOct 16 - Warrnambool - Wannon RoomsOct 22 - Sunshine Coast - Venue TBAOct 23 - Brisbane - Halloween HysteriaOct 24 - Gold Coast - Mo's Desert TavernNov 6 - Melbourne - Bendigo HotelNov 13 - Adelaide - New Dead Festival*Nov 20 - Perth - Murderfest *Jan 6 - Albury - Beer DeluxeJan 7 - Canberra - The BasementJan 8 - Newcastle - Hamilton Station Jan 9 - Sydney - Frankies Pizza+ more to be announced!(*Desecrator only)For more tour info and ticketing: http://www.desecrator.net/tour***EVERBLACK PODCAST***SUBSCRIBE and STREAM HERE: https://linktr.ee/EverblackPodcastwww.everblack.com.auwww.facebook.com/Everblackmedia Thanks to : Deathwish Hotrods & KustomsRW Promotion Blacklight AD Screenprinting Electric WitchEverblack theme and intro by Wade Norris from Our Last Enemy
Melbourne groove/thrash metal merchants The Ascended have hit the ground sprinting with their latest single The Dark.Taking all of the elements that has thrust the band into the forefront of Australian metal and combining it with lessons learned along the way, The Ascended have sonically and visually stepped up another massive level, delivering a cracking tune that is the culmination of more than half a decade of toil to the metal grind.Frontman Mat Wale joined HEAVY earlier this week to discuss the new single and the musical direction it follows."It's a new or elevated direction for us in terms of refining some of the elements that we found to be most successful out of what we've done previously, and really refining that and taking that to the next level."How"We found that we found our groove with the metalcore balance of harsh vocals and clean choruses and catchy riffs - which is what we do best. We have taken that and refined the riffs, so the riffs are crisp and improved technically, the structure is not so much of a riff/chorus, riff/chorus so nothing is repeating. So we've got more riffs, heavy breakdowns in term of heavier tuning and really worked in the chorus and melodic sing-along chorus which we've found works and resonates with the fans live and on the previous record. We've taken that to the next level."In the full interview Matt goes into more details on The Dark, including the mysterious rune that features predominantly and how it fits in with the upcoming album, reveals more details about the album including the title, the musical direction of the album and how it improves on the groundwork laid before, The Ascended's mixing of genres and how they make it work, surviving lockdown, their upcoming run of shows with Desecrator and Harlott and more.

Come with us down the rabbit hole as we head back to conspiracies this week, as Dawn enlightens Jade and Taby on the many aspects of the QAnon Conspiracy theories. It's beginnings, multiple side tangents and where they are now. We also manage to offend Trump supporters, Jehovah Witnesses, Seventh Day adventists and Mormons. Sorry, not sorry. We'll leave you with one of Tabys favorite Terry Pratchett Quotes“There were plotters, there was no doubt about it. Some had been ordinary people who'd had enough. Some were young people with no money who objected to the fact that the world was run by old people who were rich. Some were in it to get girls. And some had been idiots as mad as Swing, with a view of the world just as rigid and unreal, who were on the side of what they called 'the people'. Vimes had spent his life on the streets, and had met decent men and fools and people who'd steal a penny from a blind beggar and people who performed silent miracles or desperate crimes every day behind the grubby windows of little houses, but he'd never met The People.People on the side of The People always ended up disappointed, in any case. They found that The People tended not to be grateful or appreciative or forward-thinking or obedient. The People tended to be small-minded and conservative and not very clever and were even distrustful of cleverness. And so the children of the revolution were faced with the age-old problem: it wasn't that you had the wrong kind of government, which was obvious, but that you had the wrong kind of people. As soon as you saw people as things to be measured, they didn't measure up. What would run through the streets soon enough wouldn't be a revolution or a riot. It'd be people who were frightened and panicking. It was what happened when the machinery of city life faltered, the wheels stopped turning and all the little rules broke down. And when that happened, humans were worse than sheep. Sheep just ran; they didn't try to bite the sheep next to them.” Taby's recommended reading, Night Watch - Terry Pratchett, Earth - David Brin, The Harlott by the side of the Road - Jonathan KirschDon't forget to like and follow us on all our platforms.Facebook: The-maid-the-mother-and-the-otherInstagram: @maidmotherotherTwitter: @MotherOtherEmail: maidmotherother@gmail.com
We're convinced there's more than one Matt Harvey. Somewhere about 10 years ago while on tour driving on a Texas backroad, Mr. Harvey was abducted by aliens. He was cloned then unleashed upon an unsuspecting Metal world. All of this is judging by the amount of creative output the man has given us. Most noted for his death metal band Exhumed, Mr. Harvey is involved in a number of amazing outfits. The most recent is the new record "Breaking The World" from trad metallers Pounder. Being old buds with the show, we had a great chat about the new album, the back story with Carcass' Tom Draper and his unofficial connection to pro wrasslin'. In our "News, Views, and Tunes", we crank the new Pounder plus some rereleased classic Sacred Reich, Harlott, Holocausto, Savage Master, Tyrant, Wooded Stake, Terminal Bliss and introduced Canadian rockers Feed After Midnight in our "Indie Spotlight". Tasmanian songwriter Jonathon “JB” Barwick has brought to a close his epic five-part musical journey with the final single “A Ballad of Heartbreak & Despair”.Released under Fierce Deity, the song draws a conclusion to The Travellers Meditation that began with his debut single “The Path” in early 2019.JB sat down with HEAVY during the week to discuss the concept series of songs, beginning with what he was going for musically with the songs."It evolved over time, he measured. “About two years ago I got some gear to record at home and once I got that freedom every time I would go up the learning curve a new idea would come through. As I was learning how to record, new ideas for the song came so by the end of it... I was always hunting this sound that's like a big, heavy metal kind of Queen with the big choruses and big dramatic thrash bits so there's a bit of everything I love in there. Big heavy metal riffs, big catchy hooks, a thrashy section, some softer sections with choirs and strings and things like that... I don't know really what I was going for but that's kind of my sound (laughs). In the full interview JB discusses the length of the song and what dictates length in music, the rest of the singles that make up the collection and how they fit in with the storyline, having Andrew Hudson from Harlott guest on the track, his upcoming massive project next year and more.
This episode features album reviews for Old Mother Hell, Harlott, Pull Down The Sun & Scardust. Retro reviews of Pantera's Cowboys From Hell & Judas Priest's Painkiller, both released thirty years ago. Peter, from Empress, calls in to discuss the band's latest album, Premonition.

With the recent release of their fourth album Detritus of the Final Age, thrash metallers Harlott have broken free from the trilogy of albums that started their career and now explore new territory.Vocalist/guitarist Andrew Hudson sat down with HEAVY to talk about the new album and his take on everything surrounding it.“I wanted to try a bunch of things (with this album),” he stressed. “We're four albums deep now so I'm getting a little bit antsy in my pantsy. There's definitely a couple of things I wanted to try out on this one so while it is a thrash metal album at heart there is a fair bit of variation on the record and I'm pretty happy with how it all came out. I definitely don't regret any of the decisions that were made. There's a possibility that we will expand on that from here on out."When pressed on what those variations are Hudson went into greater detail."Slower sections, darker sections, a bit of blast there... there's some melodic passages and songs that barely creep over 100 bpm for the entire track which is unheard of for us. There's even some nine-minute songs on there which is a little bit self-indulgent but I couldn't help myself (laughs). The song tells me when it's finished, not the other way around."In the full interview, Andrew goes into more detail about the album and recording it, introduces us to the two new members and what they bring to the band, speaks about breaking the cycle of a trilogy of albums, the freedom that comes with it, being a band in the thrash genre and what it means to them and more.

From the Pit is a weekly podcast devoted to all things extreme music – whether it’s up-and-coming bands, killer new releases, future shows, and festivals, or musings on the scene itself, hosts Phil, Mike, Sam and Frank will make sure that you hear about them. Chris Themelco is the front man for Orpheus Omega and runs Monolith Studios in Melbourne. Chris has contributed largely to the sound of Melbourne metal over the past several years not only through his own band but producing albums for bands such as Harlott, In Malice's Wake, Espionage, Hollow, Trigger and more. Only a few years into running his own studio, Chris has built a demand that is expanding beyond the realms of local metal scene. When it comes to the band, Orpheus Omega have capped off their 10th year in 2018 with a successful tour with Psycroptic and also signing to EVP Recordings. This has set the band up nicely for the upcoming album in the new year, which is a long time coming from the 2015 follow up of Partum Vita Mortem. Chatting to Chris, I discover that the gap between albums was a necessity as the band needed to re-calibrated and renewed themselves after near burn out. Chris reflects on what happened after the last album came out and why it was crucial to take some time out and invest in themselves individually so that the band could continue. With adversity being no stranger to the band, there appears to be a revitalised energy that has come from all of the ups and downs that will thrust Orpheus Omega back into the spotlight in 2019. Lot's of great topics covered in this episode from mental health and self development to band dynamics, launching his studio and heaps more. Music fans but specifically musicians should enjoy and be able to identify with this one. To check out more from Chris, Orpheus Omega and Monolith Studios, check out the links below. When bands are around as long as Bullet For My Valentine, they tend to get an idea pretty quickly of what they can nail musically and what they'd like to try to challenge themselves and their fans. That seems to be the case with their brand new album Gravity which frontman Matt Tuck explains in this week's episode of Wall of Sound: Up Against The Wall. After scoring a #1 album in Australia with their last (heavy) release Venom, Matt is more than happy to explain why he's broadening the band's horizons with a more mainstream approach this time around with the band's sound and lyrical content... and he doesn't care who disagrees with him or gets in his way in the process. If you've doubted why bands/musicians changed their style over the years, this is one chat that should hopefully clear things up and explain why, more now than ever, the acts you love are trying new things that they hope will make you open your mind a bit more. There's also plenty of old school metal anthems from Metallica, Harlott, Machine Head, DragonForce and Iron Maiden, newer tracks from Trivium, Epica, Power Trip and a fresh track from The Amity Affliction + heaps more... #WoSUATW #BulletForMyValentine #MattTuck #BFMV #Gravity #ScreamAimFire #Poison #TearsDontFall #Venom #Metal #HeavyMetal #ThrashMetal #DragonForce #Darker Half #Metallica #IronMaiden #MachineHead #Epica #Trivium #TheSinAndTheSentence #PowerTrip #Harlott #AustralianBands #TheAmityAffliction #TAA #AmityAffliction #Pendulum #InFlames #IvyDoomsday #Misery #Mammal #Podcast #MusicPodcast #iTunesPodcast #SpotifyPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

"Forged in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia,Harlott is the finest example of the thrash metal genre in recent years. Taking their influence from the 80's bay area thrash scene, and blending it with the Teutonic melody and grit, they focus on high energy, up tempo music with lyrical influence from war, religion, chaos, and the human condition. Unrivaled live concerts, an aggressive recognizable sound, clinical musicianship, and a classic "Aussie" sense of humour have earned Harlott a strong and dedicated fan base, which continues to grow day to day."
