"It wasn't until I returned that I began to understand the city a little bit more and see it in a slightly different way." - Simon Wright This episode features Simon Wright and Richard Wiggins, the founders of All Flows, a creative festival in Milton Keynes. They discuss their journey from hosting Milton Keynes Geek Night to launching All Flows festival, their creative agency Ville, and their dedication to championing Milton Keynes' unique design heritage. Despite being a relatively young city, Milton Keynes has a rich history of using arts to build community, with radical approaches to urban design that attracted influential architects and designers. Simon and Richard share their passion for creating intimate, inspirational events that connect international creatives with local talent, highlighting their commitment to quality programming and community building over commercial success.TakeawaysMilton Keynes, despite being only 56 years old, has a rich design heritage that included contributions from figures like Buckminster Fuller. All Flows began as a passion project between two friends who wanted to create the kind of creative event they'd want to attend. The founders intentionally keep All Flows intimate to foster meaningful connections between speakers and attendees. Both Simon and Richard are driven more by passion than commercial interests, prioritizing quality and inspiration over profit.Their curation process involves researching speakers extensively and creating a balanced program that mixes established names with emerging talents.Student involvement through scholarships and volunteering is a key part of their mission to inspire the next generation of local creatives. The venue challenges in Milton Keynes have shaped the festival's character rather than deterring its growth. The festival has gained international recognition, with attendees traveling from as far as Michigan and New Zealand. All Flows is now included in Milton Keynes' five-year cultural and tech strategy, signifying its importance to the city. The founders see All Flows as continuing Milton Keynes' legacy of using arts and creativity to build community and create a sense of place. This week is another episode all about bands playing other bands' songs… well one band in particular this time around. For those about to rock: we are paying tribute to the one and only; AC/DC! It only took a little thunder and lightning striking experience by way of Kevin's lack of electrician skills to prompt this appreciation!!! It may have taken a few years off his life, but at least we got this killer concept of an episode out of it. AC/DC is such a staple in rock, but perhaps these covers will put a new spin on their amazing songs! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:Hard-Ons – “Let There Be Rock (featuring Henry Rollins)” from Let There Be Rock - single (1991)Lemmy & Jake E. Lee – “It's A Long Way To The Top (The Mission UK Remix)” from Remixed To Hell: AC/DC Tribute (2000) Halestorm – “Shoot To Thrill” from ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVeRs - EP (2013)Saxon – “Problem Child” from Inspirations (2021)Razed In Black – “Hells Bells” from Covered In Black: An Industrial Tribute To The Kings Of High Voltage AC/DC (1997)Iced Earth – “Highway To Hell” from Tribute To The Gods (2002)Dynamite Boy – “TNT” from Punk Goes Metal (2000)Joe Lynn Turner & Phil Collen – “Back In Black (Die Krupps Remix)” from Remixed To Hell: AC/DC Tribute (2000)Living Colour – “Back In Black” from Collideøscope (2003)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Born and raised in South Africa, Nick's heart was set on being a world-class chef from an early age. Nick's burning passion for cooking led him to Sydney, where he enrolled in a rigorous four-year cooking school course. He completed it in under three years, going on to sharpen his skills at some of the city's most luxurious hotels.Nick's next stop was Tokyo, landing a position at Iron Chef Sakai Hirotia's restaurant, La Rochelle, before spending a year in Paris working for two of the city's most renowned Michelin-starred chefs, Pascal Barbot at L'Astrance and Alain Passard at L'Arpège. His culinary excellence did not go unnoticed, being tapped to work under Justin North at Becasse in Sydney before making his way to New Zealand to work for Simon Wright at The French Café, an icon in the kiwi fine dining scene. His talent led him to leading several award-winning restaurants in Auckland such as Dallow's, Cru at Sale St, and The Commons Restaurant, as well as Everybody's Izakaya. Nick then stepped out on his own, creating two acclaimed restaurants - Auckland's Paris Butter (Two Hats), and his seasonal restaurant, Le Petit Léon, nestled in the serene south of France.Paris Butter is an amalgamation of fine dining techniques and interpretative French cuisine, all of which have been innovatively adapted to celebrate New Zealand's famous local produce with the occasional playful nod to Antipodean nostalgia. Nick's cuisine has made Paris Butter a fixture in Cuisine Magazine's Top 50, a favourite of diners, chefs and critics alike.Le Petit Léon, which he runs alongside model-turned-restaurant manager, sommelier and wife, Sina Honeyman, showcases Nick's thoughtfully-crafted cuisine in a countryside setting bursting with hospitality, family, authenticity, and a true love for their local community.Nick Honeyman's influence has surpassed the kitchen, leading his own show, "The Best of New Zealand with Nick Honeyman," as well as appearing in the ever-popular My Kitchen Rules and Masterchef.Websites https://restaurantlepetitleon.fr/https://parisbutter.co.nz/Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/restaurantlepetitleon/https://www.instagram.com/parisbutter/https://www.instagram.com/chefhoneyman/

Simon Wright is the Founder of Limited100, an online store that specializes in exclusive handcrafted automotive wall art. Being an automotive enthusiast from a very young age, Simon was inspired to start Limited100 because he felt that there was a gap in the market for the world's car enthusiasts who have a love for imagery. Limited 100 grew from one artist (Paul Ward) to six artists including Tim Wallace, who was at one point McLaren's official photographer. More recently Johan Wedenström who was Saab's official photographer was added .
Buying a car used to be about two things: style and performance. But as motorists trade in their petrol or diesel cars for electric vehicles, manufacturers are increasingly focusing on experience by adding features like karaoke machines and mood lighting. Those drivers also have a lot more choices. The ditching of internal combustion engines in favour of battery-power has allowed new car makers to enter the market. But rather than thinking like BMW or Ford, they are looking to firms like Apple for their inspiration. On this week's podcast, hosts Mike Bird, Alice Fulwood and Tom Lee-Devlin examine the remaking of the auto industry. The Economist's Simon Wright explains that software, rather than hardware, will define car brands in the future. Henrik Fisker, the founder of one of those new brands, tells them that a history of making petrol-powered cars doesn't necessarily qualify established car makers to make electric vehicles. Interview by Kris PetersTim 'Ripper' Owens name and voice is legendary in the metal scene. Not only has he sung for Judas Priest and KK's Priest among others, but he has also forged a successful solo career and travelled around the world performing songs from bands that have played a large part in his career as a musician. One of those was Metal Gods, a band that paid tribute to Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Dio in which Owens performed with ex AC/DC and Dio drummer Simon Wright. Metal Gods toured Australia for the first time late last year to rave reviews, leaving everyone who went to one of the shows in awe at the abundance of talent Owens possesses. Now, just six months later, Owens returns Down Under for two shows only - at the Crowbar in Sydney on May 11 and at The Bendigo Hotel in Melbourne on May 12.This time he will team up with members from Frankie's World Famous House Band, Harlott and Bad Moon Born to perform an even greater variety of songs from bands that have shaped metal music in general. He is treating these two shows as a tester of sorts towards booking a national tour next year, with the onus on Sydney and Melbourne proving there is a demand for more of his solo and own material.Owens joined HEAVY this morning from Brazil to tell us more. We start by asking if he has even unpacked after his last visit here not so long ago."I've unpacked and packed and unpacked and packed," he laughed. "It's just been non-stop. I'm doing this now from South America in Brazil. I was in England working on the new videos for KK's Priest, I flew home from England after doing a week there and was home one day then I flew here and then I'm going home for one day and flying there. This was last minute I decided to come there to Australia and we're gonna test the waters and do a couple of shows - it's like a test shows - and see if we can book a full tour in the future."Last time he was out here Owens was touring with Simon Wright, but this time around he is coming out by himself."It's just me playing my songs," he affirmed. "I called Joel to see if he could get some guys together and he was all for it. He got his brother and some friends. It's gonna be a blast. The setlist is great, we're doing some songs I haven't done in a while like Diamonds And Rust and we're doing something from my new solo EP, so it's a nice set list."In the full interview Ripper talks more about what songs to expect, the response to his latest album, finding the time to write new material, how these two shows will be different from what Australian audiences saw last time, assembling a band to play the songs and learning them in a short space of time, how he approaches singing songs from iconic bands, future touring plans and more.

This month, California banned the sale of petrol cars by 2035. It could prompt a third of American states to embrace electric vehicles more quickly. But America is a laggard when it comes to the EV revolution. The European Parliament voted in June for a ban on sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2035. Japan and others are also aiming for a ban by 2035. But government efforts to encourage consumers to switch to buying electric cars could run into the reality that there isn't yet enough capacity to manufacture the batteries necessary to power all those cars. On this week's episode, hosts Alice Fulwood, Soumaya Keynes and Mike Bird look at whether the EV boom could go bust before it gets going. They're joined by our industry editor Simon Wright who lays out the challenges battery manufacturers face in getting raw materials. Then, Peter Carlsson, the chief executive of European battery manufacturer Northvolt, outlines the challenges his firm faced in building a gigafactory in Sweden. Finally, Ford's vice-president of sustainability Bob Holycross explains why the carmaker sees the switch to EVs as a refounding of the company.Sign up for our new weekly newsletter dissecting the big themes in markets, business and the economy at www.economist.com/moneytalks For full access to print, digital and audio editions, subscribe to The Economist at www.economist.com/podcastoffer Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Fancy tasting 18,000+ bottles of wine in a week? Humping and dumping 73,000+ bottles? Herding 250+ international wine judges? Dodging bottle crushers and giant wormeries? And, after all that, the real question is: what's it all for?! We go behind the scenes at the world's biggest wine competition, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), to tackle these very questions and issues. What even is a wine competition? What's the point? What does it mean when you see a medal or award on a bottle? What really goes on behind the scenes? And how do you start minimising the environmental impact of a giant operation like this? We dive in with the help of DWWA co-chair Michael Hill-Smith MW plus members of the Decanter team including Events & Awards Director Victoria Stanage, Head of Logistics Simon Wright and Awards Executive Shivani Tomar. To spice things up, Susie references Peter's 'legendary stamina' (deep breath) and threatens divorce. There's also mention of anaerobic digestion, violent disagreements, a heart-warming wine story from Ukraine, the dirty topic of making money and the world's biggest ever party. All that, and some brilliant wines. We hope you enjoy the show! Do let us know your thoughts on Instagram or Twitter. Or send us a voice message via Speakpipe. Here's the link to all the headlines & results from the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022.
