In this episode, Chris shares his journey from bootstrapping CROSSNET to seeing it become a staple in major retailers like Target and Costco. Along the way, he opens up about the lessons learned, mistakes made, and how those experiences inspired him to create a space where founders can connect, grow, and thrive.  Whether it's about overcoming loneliness, avoiding costly mistakes, or balancing business and life, Chris's insights are invaluable for anyone on the entrepreneurial path.

In this week's podcast our guest, Chris Meade, shows that anything is possible with a strong will and a clear vision. Born and raised on a farm, his initial dream of becoming a veterinarian was set aside after his father died tragically and Chris ended up in the building industry. At the age of 23, Chris began what is now known as CMTP, a prominent name in the Australian packaging industry.  How his enthusiasm for cattle is woven into this story comes later. Beginning in the backyard of the Meade family's rented house, Chris's hard work soon led to an expansion of CMTP. In its early years, the company's primary product was potato and onion bins. Today, they can produce a painted and stencilled pallet every ten seconds. In the last year alone, the company created three million pallets.CMTP's current operations include 11 sites with around 300 employees.  Chris reflects, “Lots of people say, "Oh, you can't do it." Well, we do it. And we have quite a complex business in terms of how many sites it's over and the amount of material we use. So, if somebody says you can't do it, they've got it wrong. You can do it." Chris highlights his commitment to the ethics and integrity of his company, as well as financial transparency. They conclude each day with a clear understanding of whether they've operated at a profit or loss, allowing them to promptly address any issues, rather than discovering financial setbacks months later. In 2008, he rekindled his involvement in farming by purchasing a small herd of unregistered and "unruly" Limousin cattle. He has since established a well-structured breeding programme and says his cattle are more like "puppies" now. Core values in his breeding programme include docility, polledness and structural soundness. As part of their conversation, Mark and Chris discuss the impact of the F94L gene on Limousin cattle. This gene contributes to a 20% reduction in IMF and a 30% decrease in external fat cover.  It results in a 19% increase in prime cuts in the carcass. Also, animals with two copies of the F94L gene (98% of Limousin), maintain the same feed intake efficiency as those without it. This has a direct impact on methane production.Chris's commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected at CMPT as well. Part of their sustainability strategy includes leveraging waste from their timber operations to enhance soil quality on their farms. Chris also shares how he sees his approach to farming as a form of self-insurance. By investing in properties, they can weather minor disasters without relying on external insurance.Listen to the full episode to hear how Chris Meade has built CMTP into Australia's top pallet and bin supplier, whilst maintaining his abiding passion for livestock and genetics.Head Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. In #12, Simmy and Michael unpack the stories of Kadama and Crossnet. Founded by University of Washington students who originally hoped to connect students with tutors on campus, Amin and Dani Shaykho, and Marwan El-Rukby pivoted that idea into app-based service when COVID hit. Using a genius TikTok marketing strategy that has produced billions of views and recruited over 2M users, Kadama will do $5M in revenue this year. The next company covered is Crossnet, a new sport invented by brothers Greg and Chris Meade, and Mike Delpapa, that combines four square with volleyball. Marketing strategies in the early days involved playing non-stop on the tourist-packed beaches of Miami, as well as focusing on Australia in the American winter season. Chris and Lucas share some of the biggest lessons they've made from nearly catastrophic events. They've both messed up big time, so listen closely, and avoid costly mistakes. Make sure you're subscribed, because Chris will be bringing you big lessons each week from other entrepreneurs. Lucas is going to be talking to vendors and tech partners in the ecommerce ecosystem to keep your store fine tuned and winning. Chris Meade woke up to a big box retailer definitely know of discounting Crossnet 50% at the end of season. Which is totally reasonable. What hurt was when 35 new sellers were competing with us on Amazon for the buy box. We had no choice but to buy them all back. Lesson learned - always negotiate buy backs with your retail buyers. The second lesson he share is the first time Greg and I ordered a container. Nobody told us you had to have protective packaging. Turns out weeks at sea isn't the greatest thing for your product's packaging. When we got our shipment, everything was damaged and destroyed. We had no choice but to pay retail for new boxes and stickers and redo everything ourselves. Lesson learned - Use one company that can get the products across borders and to your doorstep. After the big retail summer season, comes our BFCM season, which is great for us when we make sales directly through the website. Especially when we've already collected the POs from all the retailers. What isn't so great, is when our Black Friday deals over discounted what the retailers were able to do. Buying ads to send traffic to retailers isn't fun. It's low ROI, but it's a great way to build rapport and relationships with buyers. Lesson Learned - Have a special package for retailers or your website to avoid the feeling of competition. In this episode of Building Blocks, Jason Wong talks with Chris Meade, co-inventor of CrossNet, entrepreneur, Forbes 30 under 30, and now a self-taught ecom and wholesale expert. It's rare for a DTC ecom product to make it so deeply into the world of wholesale, and Chris talks openly about all of the things he had to learn as his product began moving from online sales to the shelves of sporting goods stores. Chris's entire framework is about trying all sorts of things, learning along the way, and sharing what works. He touches on the details of contacting retailers for the first time, negotiating with manufacturers to optimize cashflow, funding and financing pitfalls and solutions, in-store vs TikTok marketing, and why sharing what he has learned is the most essential part of his success. Stopping Child Abuse (0:00:00) We all have things we become passionate about as kids, whether its sports, nature, or even just eating food. But it's not often that your childhood passion is a major world issue, like the fight against child abuse. So what is a young teenager doing to stop such a serious problem? Joining us today is perhaps the youngest guest we've ever had on the Lisa Show, 13 year old singer Rosevelt is also an ambassador for child abuse prevention nonprofit Child Help. Known as having "The Voice of an Angel with the Heart of a Warrior", Rosevelt is here with us to discuss what we can do to join the movement against child abuse.   Disinfecting Your Phone (0:19:24) You just got home from the grocery store and you might be feeling kind of gross being around all those people with this pandemic going on. So, you take a shower, change your clothes, and wipe down all the groceries with Clorox wipes. But then you see your phone. Chances are, you probably touched your phone or called your mom while you were at the store. Your phone has just as many germs on it as anything else you brought home with you—maybe more! You can't just wash it with soap and water; you don't want to ruin it. So, to answer your burning questions, we invited a guest today to tell us all the tips and tricks on disinfecting and cleaning your phone during the pandemic and after! Here to tell us all about it is Burton Kelso, chief tech expert at Integral Technologies.   Inventing a Sport (0:30:57) There are a lot of sports out there. They can be celebrated worldwide like soccer and baseball or just played at recess like Lava Tag. No matter how big or little they are they all started out as just some game that some kid (or some adult whose inner kid is still thriving) came up with and taught to their friends. So, how does someone take their new idea and grow it into a popular sport? To figure this out we're talking to Chris Meade. Back in 2017 Chris, his brother Greg, and their friend Mike got together to invent CROSSNET: a combination of four square and volleyball that is sweeping the nation.   Disciplining Kids (0:50:37) Discipline is one of the most difficult things about parenting. It isn't fun. You love your kids—you don't want to feel like the bad guy in your own home! But whether we like it or not, every once in a while, the law needs to be laid down. So how can we discipline in such a way that keeps order and the peace? Here to share her advice with us, is child psychologist Magdalena Battles.   Helping Cancer Patients (1:09:50) Here at The Lisa Show, we're always on the lookout for new service opportunities. This week we wanted to highlight a unique opportunity to serve cancer patients. The Road to Recovery provides cancer patients with free transportation to and from their treatments. That free transportation comes from volunteers who donate their time, vehicles, and driving to transport these patients to their appointments. Bill Junge and Ana Boote are part of this organization and are joining us today to discuss this incredible service opportunity.   Teaching Kids to Meditate (1:23:22) As parents, we want only the best for our kids. We try to feed them food they like, yet is still good for their bodies. We sign them up to play soccer, we arrange playdates with nice friends, and we help them with homework. Of all the things you do for your kids, have you ever thought to help them slow down, reflect and meditate? Today, we have Mel-Lisa Dormoy, a guided imagery expert with a focus on kids' meditation, here to share with us the benefits of meditation for your kids, and how to incorporate it in their routine.
