This is an episode I wrote in the Southern Studio, so I may  have been in a better mood than usual to write it than I ordinarily am, given  the subject matter. When Blue Öyster Cult first got together, they were a college band from Stony Brook, New York. That's not far from where I grew up. Oddly, none of the band's original members are from Long Island. Two of them grew up in New  York City, one in upstate NY and the last was born in Alabama but moved to the Island as a child. Go figure. They took on the name Soft White Underbelly first and used that from 1967-1969. Then they caught a bad review for a show and decided to change their name. After a few permutations they landed on Blue Öyster Cult, which they didn't really like. But the fact is, they didn't care enough at that point to come up with anything else. I touched on this briefly in the episode itself, but it's pretty clear that the band members were still pretty fond of "Soft White Underbelly". Oftentimes when they played smaller clubs around the NY Metro area, that's the name they'd use in those clubs. So when fans of BOC saw an ad in the local newspapers touting that band in the 1970s and 80s, they knew they were actually in for a Blue Öyster Cult show. "Don't Fear the Reaper" is notable for several different reasons. It was a new recording studio and they experimented with their sound in different ways. That would include having Buck Dharma sing the lead. (Dharma is the lead singer on "Godzilla" and "Burnin' For You", so they may have hit on something there.) You'll hear about some of the bells and whistles they use. And yes, you'll hear a little bit about Saturday Night Live and how they feel about it. Click here for a transcript of this episode. Click here to become a Patron of the show. Patrons get a newsletter about 48 times a year (I never counted, but I don't skip weeks often) and now they get advance access to ad-free episodes.

Danish Delights: Gryphon Audio's Ultra High-End Audio Experience Has Crossed The Pond

In the second of 7 podcasts recorded at T.H.E. Show 2023, we expand our conversation into the distrubtion arm of Denmark's ultra-luxe brand, Gryphon Audio Designs ApS. We speak with Anthony Chiarella, Director of Sales & Marketing for Gryphon Audio Designs N.A., which was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of the brand headquartered in Denmark, to extend Gryphon's availability through its U.S. and Canadian retailer partners. Anthony shares his unique background and provides an industry insider's perspective of the high-end audio business. Anthony Chiarella officially became an audio geek at the age of 13 when he joined his high school AV Club (“We got beaten-up by the football team every Friday!”) and by 16 he was working as an Audio Salesman at New York's notorious Crazy Eddie. After earning his MBA, he achieved success on Wall Street but soon realized he was more interested in HiFi than High Finance and took a sales position at Lyric HiFi, then the mecca for High End Audio, where he met many industry luminaries including Harry Pearson, Founder and Publisher of The Absolute Sound (TAS). Anthony soon started writing for TAS and most other High End mags and wound up freelancing for Maxim, Esquire, GQ and other mainstream Men's Magazines. At the same time, some of the companies about whose products he was writing were looking for sales and marketing help, which led him to found Specialty Sound and Vision (SSV), a NY Metro Rep Firm, in 1996. Dedicated to working with the territory's best retailers, SSV is considered “THE High End Rep Firm.” After the Great Recession, most of the NY Metro retailers closed, so SSV became a National Sales Management company, representing Gryphon, Brinkmann and other Ultra-Luxe High End Manufacturers across the US and Canada.Thank you to our sponsors Q Acoustics & SVS for the support of our programming!https://www.qacoustics.comhttps://www.svsound.comRelated links: Podcast: Gryphon Audio's #1 Dealer, Joseph Cali at T.H.E. Pritchard talks about the power of brands and companies become socially and environmentally responsible by saying, “What I found is that when companies and brands come together and focus on a common mission, what it allows them to do is hold each other accountable, share best practices, find ways to challenge each other to innovate and it drives much more collective action.” Pritchard shared some interesting statistics about consumers and the brands they choose, “9 out of 10 consumers say they have a more positive image of a company or a brand when it supports a social or an environmental cause. More than half say they make purchase decisions based on shares beliefs with brands.” Helias gives us an immediate way of washing we can all help the environment, “The biggest environmental impact based on life cycle assessment is really the temperature washing machine. It is 80% of the carbon footprint.” Virginie tells us about the goal of Ambition 2030 as being, “Really, what we want to do by 2030 is reinvent the model of consumption.”  Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today”: How does Marc Pritchard think about the Sustainable Brands Summit compared to other conferences he has attended? This interview is part of our HIMSS18 coverage and was recorded live in the exhibit hall. On this episode we talk with Stuart Goldberg, MD, Chief Scientific Officer at Cota. Dr. Goldberg tells us all about Cota's physician-led journey to organize and classify real-world evidence about every type of cancer. This effort led to something they call the Cota Nodal Address (CNA), and it's enabling health systems to get very specific about the types of patients they're treating, the costs associated with them, and the outcomes being achieved. This apples-to-apples comparison allows Cota to identify variation and address it in ways that are beneficial to the provider, payer and patient. It enables a concept Dr. Goldberg calls "Precision Payment", which in turn enables proper bundled payment design, and precision medicine.  And Cota is not only physician led, but the payers are on board too. Literally. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield lead their Series A funding round. Plus, they just closed a $40 Million Series C funding round in February. Cota is clearly a company to watch. This was one of the most intriguing conversations I had at HIMSS '18 and one that I'll be exploring some more. I'm very excited to share it with you... ~ Don Lee About Cota Cota is a healthcare data and analytics company that enables providers, payers and life science companies involved in diagnosing and treating complex diseases to optimize the outcomes of individual patients and lower the overall cost of the patient population served. It is powered by the patented Cota Nodal Address™ (CNA) system, a unique digital classification methodology built by leading physicians and data scientists. The CNA is the first and only system that precisely categorizes patient factors, their diseases and intended therapies, enabling precision medicine at scale. Cota's technology enriches medical records to create research-grade data and joins it with a suite of analysis, visualization and management tools. This enables providers, payers and life science companies to analyze, report on and research outcomes, costs, treatments and quality at any granularity and stage of the patient journey. The result is a constantly improving system that merges technology and medicine to improve the lives of patients everywhere. For more information, go to www.cotahealthcare.com  About Stuart Goldberg, MD Stuart Goldberg, MD is Chief Scientific Officer at Cota, Inc. and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers: The New Jersey Medical School. He also maintains an active clinical practice in the Division of Leukemia at the John Theurer Cancer Center. Dr. Goldberg obtained his medical degree at the Milton Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University. After completing internal medical residency and hematology-oncology fellowships at George Washington University Medical Center, he served as a BMT fellow at the Mayo Clinic and Associate Director of the BMT Program at Temple University. Dr. Goldberg's clinical research has focused on new treatment strategies for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes. Recognizing the wealth of information contained in electronic health record data, he and his partners at JTCC founded Cota, a data and analytics company that seeks to optimize patient outcomes while reducing population healthcare costs. In the field of “big data” analysis he has used databases to redefine the incidence and complications related with myelodysplastic syndromes (published in JCO and Transfusion) and has reviewed observational databases (including SIMPLICITY) to foster adherence with evidence based CML monitoring guidelines (published in JOP, CRMO and CLML). Most recently he has used the Cota database to explore rates and implications of EGFR mutational testing among community oncologists (published in Clin Lung), patterns of care in T-cell lymphoma (published in CLML), end-of-life care decisions (published in Palliative Med) and cost-effectiveness of genomic profiling in lower risk breast cancer (published in AJMC). This research earned him the 2015 David King Clinical Scientist Award from the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC). This time, we're discussing Altman itself, what Pete does there, and why he chose to move back to the NY Metro. We discussed color and color control in-depth, touching on many of the challenges that color-changing LED and short arc fixtures both cause and solve. We also discussed the lab at Altman, and how they capture the immense amount of photometric data required for IES files and documentation. Thanks for joining us again!
