1. What is your fasting plan for our 40 days of prayer & fasting? 2. Luke 6:27-28 says, “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” How does this challenge you? 3. In 2023, God is calling our church to have an outward focus. During these 40 days of prayer & fasting, the call is for us to seek to have God's heart for the people He is going to bring into our paths this year. How would you describe God's heart for people? How would you describe your heart for people? 4. In Luke 10, Jesus tells the story of the good Samaritan. A Jewish businessman was attacked by robbers and left for dead. Two religious leaders saw him and kept on their way. A “despised Samaritan” saw this man, ministered to him, cared for him, and paid for him to stay at an Inn until he was well. What is the point that Jesus was trying to make by telling this story and what should we take away from it? 5. How do we prepare our hearts to share hope with our neighbors? ***Hint: Jesus is our example***

Slideshow for this message is available Introduction John 15 Introductory Analogy I have here a power strip. And I have here a light. Watch what happens when I plug it in. No surprises. Now here's another power strip. Let me plug this one in. Nothing. What's the difference? On the outside they look very similar. Both plugs have the shape to fit into the outlet. They plug into the same source. Externally, they are indistinguishable. Yet one works and one doesn't. Why? What you can't see is the FUNDAMENTAL difference in the essential composition of these two wires. This wire is made entirely of plastic. And of course, plastic is an insulator. It doesn't have the copper conductor necessary to carry the electrical current. It's connected to the source of power but can never experience any the effects of that power. Now, let me ask this question: where does the fault lie? It's not the fault of the power strip. This is charged with a couple thousand watts of power. The power strip is doing what it's supposed to be doing. It's not the fault of the light. The light will definitely light up when it receives the power. It too is doing what it is supposed to be doing. Is it the fault of the wire? Not really. The wire too is doing what it is supposed to be doing. You see fault is introduced into the equation when we have wrong expectations about what ought happen.. So for example, if you connect the plastic wire and expect the light to come on, the fault is in the person expecting the plastic wire to do something it cannot do. The fault is not with the wire. Or similarly if you don't connect the wire to the outlet and complain that the light is not on, the fault lies with the person expecting the light to come on without connecting the wire. The fault is not with the light. Applying the Analogy Now today in the passage we are going to apply this principle to our growth as Christians. When we don't grow as believers, where does the fault lie? Is the fault with God? Is the fault with other people? Is it our circumstance? It's actually none of these things. No, the fault lies with us because we are expecting certain growth results that the spiritual properties of the universe cannot produce. In our passage today, God is going to tell us the condition under which we will experience incredible growth and the conditions in which we will experience no growth. He is going to give us an powerful analogy to describe how change can be experienced. Instead of a power strip, we have a vine and instead of wires, we have branches and instead of a light, we have fruit.Jesus is going to teach about this cause and effect relationship between the vine, the branches and the fruit. If we want to be bright, effective, fruitful Christians, we need to be the right kind of branch plugged into the spiritual power source…the vine. And if that's the case, fruit will be the automatic result. Conversely, if you don't do that, don't expect fruit. That's the basic message for today. Where do we get the power to be fruitful? We will start with the sustaining root. Background He's going to give this great analogy from the vineyard which would have meant something to the nation of Israel because God all through the OT pictured Israel as a vine.In Psalm 80 the Psalmist writes, “You brought a vine out of Egypt and planted it.” The Psalm goes on to describe how that vine was destroyed in captivity and they were awaiting the restoration of the vine. Well here comes Jesus with the final, “I am” statement. So Jesus is the vine.Jesus is pictured as the root that draws up nutrients from the soil and sends that energy into the branches. And we then are pictured as the branches transport that transfer the energy and produce fruit. Now there are two types of branches that are described in the analogy. Both types receive treatment from the father who is pictured here as the vineyard cultivator. The first type of branch is the branch that produces no fruit. This is a branch that looks normal. It is cosmetically plugged into the vine, but not actually. From all the external appearances, it looks like it should produce fruit but for some reason it doesn't. Why? Because there's a composition problem with this branch.Like this plastic wire, it can't conduct the life-giving power of Jesus. It's actual properties insulate it from power. It takes energy from the vine without contributing. And the father sees that and takes out his cutting shears and slices it off and tosses it into the fire. This is a metaphor of the unbeliever. The physical properties of the heart of the unbeliever are such that the life giving words of Jesus do not penetrate. It hears the words of Jesus but it can't do anything with them. The power of the words can't be transported into action. It's the heart of stone. The second type of branch is the branch that produces fruit. This is the heart of flesh. This is the heart that hears the powerful words of Jesus and responds. The life-giving power of Christ's words are rooted into his mind, pressed into his soul by the Holy Spirit and fruit is the result. This branch is ORGANICALLY connected and THEREFORE conducts the life-giving energy of the vine and produces that beautiful fruit that the gardener is after. But, the text is careful to say, the fruit can be improved by pruning. And so the father painfully cuts. But he cuts to grow. He injures to heal. He slices to mend. His purposes are loving and his goal is that you might bear not some fruit, but MUCH fruit. Giant, plump, firm juicy grapes that just explode in your mouth. I mean, that's a beautiful picture. Now the main purpose of the metaphor is to make this point. You cannot produce fruit apart from being connected to the vine.In the same way that you cannot expect this light to turn on without it being connected to the outlet, the fruit cannot be produced without being connected to the vine. Now it's an obvious point with powerful implications. Apply it to our the common frustration of trying to break sin habits and trying to grow only to experience repeat failure. Here's the exact words of Jesus, “As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. Apart from me you can do nothing.” Are you expecting the light to turn on without plugging it in?Are you expecting the fruit of the Spirit without being connected to the Spirit? We can't do anything without him. So if for some reason you aren't changing. You are struggling in sin. You are being strangled by your old habits. You are drowning in addiction. You are blinded by bitterness. And you just can't change. Ask yourself the question: am I connected to the vine? Imagine if I were to stand here and I just start whining and complaining that the light won't turn on. It just won't turn on! What's the problem? And then I go through a cycle of self-pity. “It just seems like everyone else gets light. Why not me?” And then depression sets in. “What's the point of even trying? I've lost all hope that I will ever experience light.” And then I begin experiencing consequences. Because I have no light I stumble and trip and hit my head on things and start to bleed. And then I start blaming God. “God if you loved me, you'd give me light.” You'd just stare at me dumbfounded. “Dude, you have issues. Just plug the light in.” Now, I know you are asking, “How do we get connected? How do I plug it in” Patience, Daniel son. That's the metaphor itself. That's the sustaining root. Now let's look at the resulting fruit. Here it is. Now, here's the amazing thing that is being said. First he reiterates what happens to the branches that are unable to conduct the fruit-producing power of God. They are chopped off and thrown into the fire and they are burned. But, look at what he says next. Next he describes the fruit itself. He says if you abide in me, if you are connected organically to the vine, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you. Every 17 year old boy reads that and goes sweet, I can get a TESLA if I follow Jesus. That's not the idea at all. What is the Spirit offering you? The Spirit of God is offering you his fruit. The fruit of the Spirit according to Galatians 5 is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, self-control.So the picture is this giant bowl of various fruits that is being offered to you.The entire bowl is available to you. And if you are connected to the Spirit of God, he's saying to you, “Take it.” The Spirit is offering you the entire bowl of fruit. Take whatever you want. Ask for any of it. As much as you want.”I have an entire orchard out there ripe with fruits just like these. You can't exhaust my supply. Eat till your stuffed. I'm willing to give you as much as you want and whatever kind you want.” You see, one of the things God wants to do in this passage is re-excite you about what is possible as a follower of Jesus. Maybe you are just convinced that fruit is not possible. No matter how hard you try, you just never experience fruit. But listen, it is SO possible. What stain cannot be lifted by the power of God? I am the Vine; you are the branches. What relationship is too hard for God? I am the Vine; you are the branches. What situation cannot be redeemed? I am the Vine; you are the branches. What habit is so entrenched it cannot be erased and reformed? I am the Vine; you are the branches. Without him, well, of course, you can do nothing. But with him he says, “Whatever you want! Any kind of fruit you want. You want love? You want freedom from bitterness? You want joy? You want self-forgetfulness? You want peace? You want graphic spiritual insight? You want patience? You want total security? You want legendary kindness? You want stamina? You want gentleness You want self-control? Do you want any of these virtues? Ask me. I'm the vine. They are in me and all you have to do is ask and draw it out from me. Stop asking for small things. Stop asking me for pleasant weather and plump retirement and to do good on your spelling test. Ask me for the powerful fruits of the Spirit that I long to give.” Do you see how fundamentally different this is than any of our other relationships? Most relationships are relationships of influence. My parents influence me. My friends influence me. My mentors influence me. But Jesus is a relationship of life. It's a relationship of sustenance.Literally life flows from him to you and without that, you are toast. You can't grow. You wither and die. No fruit. Apart from him you can do nothing. But again, with him, everything. Now here's the million dollar question. How do you do that? Well, he answers that question in a very, very clear way. It's going to take some work to think about how to apply it, but how to do it is very clear. How do we connect ourselves to the vine? We have the sustaining root. We have the resulting fruit. But what's the route? How do we plug into that power? Here it is. Now there are going to be two things he asks us to do in order to plug into the vine. There are two things involved in this concept of ABIDING. See if you can notice them in the text itself. Hint: Jesus is the model. So did you see the two things? There are two things he wants us to do: abide in the love of Jesus and keep his commandments. That's exactly what Jesus did. But we can get even more specific. A person may ask, what is the commandment I am supposed to keep? He answers: So here's the two things we are supposed to do in order to stay connected to the vine. First, we are supposed to ABIDE in the LOVE of Christ. We are supposed to receive his love. We are supposed to let that love flow into us. But we can't plug it up there. We can't put a stopper in our hearts. There's a second thing we must do. Second, we must let that love flow through us and out into our relationships. It has to flow through us and produce fruit in our RELATIONSHIPS. Notice that all the fruits of the Spirit involve relationships with other people. So, we are to RECEIVE his love and GIVE his love. That's what it means to abide. Now in very practical terms let's walk that out. Let's consider how these two necessary components of abiding are really experienced. How do we receive the love? The first thing to say is that God's love doesn't grow. God loves you today as much as he did the day you first received Christ and as much as he will love you 10,000 years into heaven. It's infinite. It's complete. It's perfect. But our awareness of that love does grow.So to abide in the love of God is to grow in your awareness of it. That's how we receive it. We grow in awareness of what's already there. How do we do that? Answer (wait for it): read your Bible and pray. That's the main way that we are made aware of God's love. That's abiding.Or to say it another way: We invite the Spirit of God to take the Word of God and press into our souls the Love of God.That's abiding. You see this book is about God wanting you to receive his LOVE. But the problem is we resist it. Every person is born into the world with sin and that sin creates guilt and that guilt creates in us the sense that we are unlovable people and that we need to EARN the love of Jesus by doing things that are lovable. And the whole message of the Bible is you can never become lovable by trying to be lovable.Jesus loves you not because you are lovable but because he is love. The whole point of the Bible is to get you to see that, yes, your intuition is correct. You are actually far, far more unlovable than you ever realized. But God loved you anyway. And he sent His Son to redeem you and make you lovable by applying his righteousness to your account. And now by virtue of his righteousness you have become lovable. So, the summary of the Bible in one sentence is this: Jesus loves you. Abide in that love. And the work of the Spirit is to help you see it. Remember last week. What's the job of the Spirit? To act as a spotlight to illuminate the person and work of Jesus. So AGAIN, to abide in God's love is to invite the Spirit of God to take the Word of God and press into our souls the Love of God. And there is no better passage in the Bible that articulates this than Ephesians chapter 3.Paul here is praying for Ephesian church and there's this grand opening to the prayer. You know what a grand opening is…you have a giant banner and streamers and balloons and they are giving away free hot dogs. I mean it's a big deal. And Paul has this grand opening to his prayer. Ephesians 3 Now stop there. If you didn't know what is coming in this passage what would you think Paul is getting ready to ask God for? This is a grand setup. Paul is cashing in all his heavenly coupons. I don't often pray bold and big but I'm digging deep into the treasure storehouses of God because I'm about to pray something huge. You are going to need all the riches of heaven for this. You are going to have to be divinely strengthened with supernatural power for this. His prayer is to invite the Spirit of God to take the Word of God and press into our souls the Love of God. This verse is like a spiritual French press that's used for brewing coffee. If you aren't familiar with these little devices. The water in the press is like our hearts. And the word of God is like the coffee grounds that get sprinkled on top.And our hearts naturally resist it. The coffee just floats on top and it doesn't really have all that much of an effect. But then there's this plunger and it pushes those grounds deep into the water and it forces interaction. It forces them to blend and intermix. Spiritual reactions are going off like crazy because of that forced interaction. That's what the Spirit of God is doing when you read the word of God and pray. The fact that God loves you gets pressed deep into your heart and now you don't just know intellectually that Jesus died for you sin.You feel it. You know it. You see it. That's allowing, as Colossians 3:16 says it, to allow the Word of Christ to dwell in you richly. To receive the love of God is to read God's Word and go through that work of meditation, prayer, reflection, pondering. If you aren't doing this, you aren't plugged in. Period. Can I just kind of make a point here? Would you allow me to do it? If you aren't reading your Bible, you aren't plugged into the vine. Apart from me you can do nothing. How did you expect to get power? How did you expect to bear fruit? How did you expect to overcome sin and change your affections? How did you expect to grow more in love with Christ? You're not plugged in. Reading your Bible is your spiritual food. You don't ever outgrow your need for food. Sure, you can go a day or two or three without it, but if you do, you are nutrient deprived. You are unhealthy. You become lightheaded, famished, you don't think clearly, you are low on energy. Why would you ever choose to do that?We need constant nourishment from God. If you find yourself entrenched in sin, bad habits…apart from me you can do nothing. The Word of God is the main way. If you want an app to read your Bible, here's my favorite: the Dwell app. And it goes like this: But it can also be supplemented by other material. That nourishment can come in the form of listening to sermons, podcasts, reading books about the Bible. In fact, we have a few extra copies of a book in the foyer entitled Abide by Andrew Murray and it covers John 15. They are free. If you get out there quickly you can grab one and take it home. Abide in the vine. Read God's Word. When you read God's Word, you give the Spirit material to work with to press into your heart. Let the Spirit take those words. You chew on them. You ingest those words and digest them. You break them down into tiny pieces and infuse them into every part of your body to give you life. That's why we take time to memorize God's Word. To get it into your head so that the Spirit of God can do work with that all day long. To abide in the love of Christ is to make the love of Christ part of who you are. So just figure out how to best do that for yourself. How are you going to receive his love? How are you going to remember that Christ loves you? How are you going to put this truth right in the front of your brain, how are you going to make this part of the air you inhale? How are you going to infuse this into every thought, so that is becomes muscle memory? If you don't do this, you are not connected to the vine you and none of these promises about great growth apply to you. You are not connected to the vine. Apart from him you can do nothing. Receive his love. That's the idea. That's half of what it means to abide in the vine. Here's the other half. You receive his love but you also give his love.If a true Christian receives the love of God he will always give it.Why? By nature of who he is. That's what living branches do. This is why the Bible uses fruit as evidence of a true Christian. This wire cannot help but conduct electricity by nature of what it is. The second it touches power on this end, it instantly transmits it. It can't help it. It's a perfect test. And in the same way, a true Christian cannot but help to love others. When he has truly encountered to the love of God, he cannot help but give it away. When a Christian is electrified by the love of God, when a Christian is energized by the love of God, when he's charged and crackling and sparking with the love of God he's just looking for a way to ground that energy. He's just clamoring for an place to dump that current. And God says, you want to know what would make me happy? If you love other people the way I love you. And when the Christian hears that, it's just a joy to obey. It's just an overflow. It represents release to transfer all that divine current, into others. There's all this enthusiasm and excitement to love others. John Newton once wrote in a hymn: To see the law by Christ fulfilled, And hear his pardoning voice Changes a slave into a child, And duty into choice. That's the voice of a man who is actually connected to the vine. Are you plugged in? Our theme for the year is unity in Christ. Do you see how this becomes the basis for all Christian unity? Why do all grapes have the same basic shape? Why do they taste the same? Because they are all drawing from the same root. They are all being fed the same nourishing substance. We are all connected to the same vine which means we are all producing the same fruit (fruits of the Spirit and love for one another). We are all receive and give the love of Christ. That's true Christian unity. So we have: Now this last word is directed at some of you who might be tempted toward discouragement at this point in the sermon. Maybe you thought you were going to get a secret spiritual trick and all you told me to do was to read my Bible and pray. I've been doing that with minimal results. I don't feel any massive spiritual change or energy. This is for you. Do you hear what Jesus is saying?God is going to produce fruit in you. You are going to be fruitful not because of your faithfulness to God but because of his faithfulness to you. Is that not encouraging, friend? This can be an incredible encouragement to us. Because there are times when it can get real discouraging. There can be times when it feels like you are doing everything right and still there is no fruit. It can seem like I am reading my Bible, I am praying and yet these trials are still thrust upon me. There all these difficulties. In that case, you are connected to the vine, but guess what's happening? God is pruning. I remember one time driving out to Marsing. If you haven't been out that direction, it's a part of Idaho where there are lots of orchards and vineyards. And I remember driving by this vineyard and with my untrained eye it looked like a grapeyard massacre. There's all these beautiful bright green leaves on the ground. The poor vines are just bleeding at hundreds of point from the steel blades that mercilessly sliced into their supple stems.Even small clusters of fruit that had not yet developed were sliced off.And it all seems so cruel. Imagine being that vine. The vine says, “Just when things were starting to get good, just as I was starting to produce fruit, just as I was starting to get the hang of it and get comfortable, you come along and slice me down.” And to the untrained eye, it looks like a catastrophe. But to the vinedresser, there's not a single wasted stroke. It was all designed to strengthen, develop, grow. The loss is calculated and controlled for the purpose of growth. The only way to develop a vine is to hurt it. Look at your life. You might be bleeding all over the place from the pruning of God. You might be look on the ground and see that giant sum of money he just lopped off. You might see that health you once enjoyed sliced off and it's lying on the ground. You are looking at pictures of yourself from your youth and say what happened to my skin, what happened to my hair? All of this beauty just lopped off and thrown on the ground. All your athletic talent, lopped off. These key relationship in your life lopped off. And it hurts. You are bleeding. And you can cry all you want and say, “Why does God cut off these beautiful parts of my life? Why does he cut me back like this?” But we know the answer. When you cut off the vine, it causes it draw from the vine in new and vigorous ways.It draws in desperate and dependent ways like it never has before. Friends, the vinedresser knows what he is doing. Trust God's timing. Trust his pruning schedule. Trust his agenda. Don't question it. Don't complain. He owns me. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. God's goal is the fruit of the Spirit in your life.Look at your life through the lens of what God wants to produce in you.He wants you to experience life and experience it abundantly. You know what will happen when you finally grow back? You will be incredibly strong. That growth process is incredibly slow. It's almost invisible day by day, but the organic growth of seed can crack a granite bolder if given enough time.I am the vine. You are the branches. If you abide in me, you will bear much fruit. Communion. You know another way, you can draw from the vine. Through communion. Common union. We are literally sharing with Christ in his life giving power. The Scriptures say that if you are part of the vine, drink deeply. Drink from the father. Take this gift as nourishment. But if you are not a Christian, if you are just cosmetically attached, this will do nothing for you. You are insulated from any benefit. And the great problem of every unfruitful branch is that according to this text God will one day cut it off and throw it into the fire. It does not need to be so. Come to Christ. Receive the life he wants to offer you. Accept his love and be baptized. We have a baptism service coming up in February and if you are wanting to place your faith in Christ. Repent. Believe and be baptized. Those are your next steps. Let's pray.
Of course we could have covered the two (or three) Uses of the Law, but what fun would that be? Instead, in this episode, we explore the patterned consistency of all law-based systems—scientific, psychological, jurisprudential, and religious—and why we not only need them, but can't even function without them; yet also, how that exact patterned consistency makes all laws hackable, gameable, and manipulable. How then to have an honorable relationship to the law, especially if the law—and others who ought to be obeying it—don't always deal honorably with you? Hint: Jesus has something to do with it. We will dive into the book of John for the next several weeks, and it's kind of a weird start. Hint: Jesus is the main character!
Episode Notes 1 Peter 4:1-6 (paragraph 1) - More contrasts between the old life of sin, and the new life of righteousness: The things we used to do...we don't do them anymore. And, what that whole "the gospel [was] preached also to them that are dead" really means. Hint: Jesus didn't preach to the spirits of the dead.Recorded: 2/11/20Contribute hereIntro/Outro Music: “The Promise in Our Fields” (c) 2000 Alex Grant Used by permission
You get what you incentivize. Listen to this account of John 11 - the story in which Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. Hint: Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead isn't the most significant part of the story
John 6:26-40Jesus feeds the 5,000 and waits for the crowd that has gathered due to His miracles.Interesting question: Why do we always question finances when Jesus asks us to do something?A boy is asked to share.Jesus gives thanks.12 baskets of leftovers: What do you think happened to them? Hint: Jesus says, “so none is wasted.”Jesus walks on water. The crowds search for Jesus. Some important points:Notice that they are trying to make some type of spiritual connection- they are talking about what God has done [perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it’s close to passover- remember vs.4] Jesus wants to draw their attention to what God is Doing! Many are searching for Jesus to meet a temporary need vs.26Jesus is not angry but He does want to clarify that they need a change of focus. We don’t need to be angry with people who don’t yet understand; we need to offer clarity.2. Jesus tells them that He is the source of eternal life vs.27Jesus wants to be sure they understand that there is a real difference between existence and Life!We need to be sure that we are clear with the message that the hope of life is in Jesus.3. Jesus tells them not to be occupied with the temporary over the eternal – vs.27-29.Two words that we translate as work means literally –Ergazomai – to be occupied with.Ergon – a process, course of action. So Jesus is saying, don’t let your existence get in the way of your life. The Crowd makes a very important request- “Sir, give us this Bread”John 6: 35, “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me willnever go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.”bread-artos of-ho life-zōēArtos – necessary for lifeZoe – spiritual lifeJesus is literally saying that He is the necessary source of spiritual life. The questions for us to answer:1. What are we going to do with this truth? In John 21, Jesus tells Peter “feed My lambs” and “feed My sheep.”Will we share the Bread of Life with those who are starving to live?Let us not be known as those in Jude 1:12, These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead.2. How hungry are we for what God gives? What occupies our minds and hearts? Where are we looking for our nourishment?John 4:34, “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.– We have to be hungry for what matters!Matt.5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”Psalm 107:9, …for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.Psalms 146:7, He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free.3. Will we allow existence to block our view of Life? There is a powerful difference between existing and Living….. and the only way to truly live is through the Bread of Life – Jesus.John 3:21, But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.John 6:63, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.”John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Amos, Ashwin, and Nasty have all been so good this year they made out their wish lists with great care. They asked Santa for so many things that will help the world! We find the TRUE meaning for the season! Hint: Jesus has little to do with it. We also get in our top 5 predictions for 2018! Happy Saturnalia to all! And we hope that we are all still here to see 2019!

Geoff Surratt. The dirty little secret of leadership development classes is that they don't work; classes produce students, not leaders. This workshop looks at the 10 things Jesus did that will develop leaders, and will help you apply them to your context. (Hint: Jesus never taught a seminary class, never had a sign-up sheet and never provided coffee and donuts.)
