Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper and Mark Radulich present their NWA Straight Outta Compton Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!N.W.A (an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes) was an American hip hop group formed in Compton, California. They were among the earliest and most significant popularizers and controversial figures of the gangsta rap subgenre, and the group is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of hip hop music.Straight Outta Compton is the debut studio album by American hip hop group N.W.A, which, led by Eazy-E, formed in Los Angeles County's City of Compton in early 1987. Released by his label, Ruthless Records, on August 8, 1988, the album was produced by N.W.A members Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince, with lyrics written by N.W.A members Ice Cube and MC Ren along with Ruthless rapper The D.O.C. Not merely depicting Compton's street violence, the lyrics repeatedly threaten to lead it by attacking peers and even police. Directed by Abdul Malik Abbott, the movie provided an intimate and authentic portrayal of the street culture and rap industry at the time. With its raw storytelling and captivating visuals, "Streets Is Watching" had a significant impact on the hip hop community, catapulting JAY-Z's career and cementing his role as a cultural icon. This review will explore the film's artistic merits, its influence on the genre, and the lasting legacy it has left behind. Before becoming Hall of Fame Hov, JAY-Z in 1997 was still striving to make a name for himself in an extremely crowded New York City rap scene. Part of him getting shine at the time was the skills that he put on full display for his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt. The album, filled with jewels like “Dead Presidents II” and “D'Evils,” gave listeners a full-colored introduction to the man behind the flashy and conscious poetics. But while it was easily regarded a classic, Reasonable Doubt was a slow seller. In an effort to build the exposure behind his coveted rap skills, Jay and his Roc-A-Fella Records co-founders Kareem “Biggs” Burke and Damon Dash inked a distribution deal with Def Jam, selling the initial half-stake of the label for a reported $1.5 million. Not long after, 1997's In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 arrived. Hip Hop, Soul, & funk on Radio Monaco

This week we take it back to where it all started. Our co-hosts Rick and Dave have watched the very first episode of Snowfall that originally came out in July of 2017. Created by one of Hip-Hop's most legendary creatives, the late filmmaker John Singleton (RIP), Snowfall is absolutely one of the most authentically hip-hop tv shows the world has ever seen on a major network. Rick notes that he got his start with just a $50 cocaine rock, as opposed to the kilo that Franklin somehow manages to convince the drug/gun lord Avi to give him on consignment. And Franklin gets it for a price ($12,000) that was much lower than what it would have actually cost at that time. Rick remembers how everybody told him he wouldn't be able to sell cocaine in his neighborhood of South Central, as it was a rich person's drug at the time. Marijuana and “Sherman” (PCP) were the drugs of choice in the hood in the early 1980s. Franklin is a hustler, running the local Asian-owned corner store, where he tells his next door neighbor Melody that he doesn't drink and that making money is the thing that motivates him. Rick shares an old saying he used to live by, “getting drunk can get you put in a trunk.” The hosts give a rundown on each of the main characters that viewers meet in this first episode. Leon is the wild young'un fresh out of jail who becomes Franklin's trusted sidekick. The hosts share their thoughts on Uncle Jerome, Auntie Louie, CIA agent Teddy and Franklin's mom Cissy. They also discuss Franklin's next door neighbor Andre, an LAPD sergeant. Rick remembers just one Black police officer who they called “Action Jackson,” but says a police officer could never have gotten away with living in the neighborhood. Finally, Rick and Dave discuss all of the outstanding music selections that we hear in this episode. Rick tells the audience some of his favorite artists and songs from that era while remembering how he and his crew would throw parties and always had two staple artists on hand: Parliament-Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire. Dave talks about growing up with a love for music, going to buy 45s and how this lead to him creating The Source.
