In this episode of Mental Training Lab, I sit down with psychiatrist, meditation teacher, and author of The Mindful Twenty-Something, Dr. Holly Rogers. We're breaking down how mindfulness and meditation can transform our relationship to the present moment, performance, and our lives as a whole. Holly has spent decades working with college students, emerging adults, and high performers, helping them use Vipassana (mindfulness) meditation not as a relaxation tool, but as a mental training and nervous system regulation practice. We dig into what mindfulness actually is (and isn't), why it's not about “clearing your mind” and more about expanding your stretch zone so you don't tip into overwhelm when it matters most.We also get personal. I share how these practices have helped me transform my relationship with self-criticism, including a moment where I found myself unexpectedly in tears on the cushion, able to meet a younger version of me, and his “wrestler mindset” with compassion instead of judgment. Holly brings in 30 years of clinical experience to bust the myth that being kinder to yourself will make you soft or lazy and explains why she's never once seen that happen. If you're an athlete, coach, or high performer who's curious about mindfulness, meditation, self-compassion, performance, and resilience, this conversation offers practical tools, science-backed insight, and very human stories to help you start (or restart) your own practice in a doable, sustainable way.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Learn more about The Mental Training LabConnect with Pete on Instagram | LinkedIn | WebsiteSubscribe to the podcast on Apple | Spotify This show is produced and edited by the team at Palm Tree Pod Co.
I'm a wife of 49 years, mother of two adult children, and Grammy to two wonderful girls. I've worked for my company for 45 years and plan to retire within the next two years. I love to walk, hike, travel, read and be as active and healthy as possible. I never had to worry about my weight until my early 30s. I was the skinny kid. My dad always told me I had toothpick legs. I could eat anything and everything without gaining weight. When I got married at the age of 22, I weighed 122 pounds, which was the highest weight I'd ever achieved. When I got pregnant with my daughter eight years later, I weighed 127 lbs. I gained 22 lbs. during my pregnancy and lost it in a short amount of time. As I entered my 30s, weight suddenly became an issue, and within about five years, I'd gained up to 160 pounds. I joined Weight Watchers at work group and got down to 125 lbs., and looked gaunt and unhealthy. But as is often the case, WW was not sustainable. And I got back up to where I was when I originally joined WW.I then tried so many other "diets" and landed around 140 lbs. In 2021, I had a total knee replacement and gained 15 lbs. due to inactivity and comfort eating. I tried WW again, lost 5 lbs. and then the scale wouldn't budge any further. My daughter had suggested IF, but the word "fasting" was frightening to me. Finally, I was so desperate that I said I'd give it a try. January 26, 2022, was the day I started IF, and I will never live my life any differently. I lost the other 10 lbs. plus another 15 and have settled into an IF lifestyle. To join the Patreon Community. Kelly Frances Bio I am 63 years of age and live in Southern California, USA. I have been fasting since March 2023 and have lost 53 lbs. My starting weight was 213 (I'm six feet tall), and my goal weight was 160, which I obtained and have maintained since October 2023. I learned about The Fasting Highway book and this fantastic lifestyle from my longtime friend and co-worker Holly Rogers, a TFH online group member. We went to dinner one evening when she was visiting, and I shared how frustrated I was with the weight I had gained during my husband's cancer illness in 2021 and his subsequent passing in December of 2022. I used food as a comfort and coping mechanism for the stress of being his caregiver and, eventually, his widow. It's so easy to get into unhealthy habits when you're dealing with such a traumatic event. You can even justify it by calling it “comfort food”, but I was anything but comfortable in my own body. Holly told me about the book and the online group, and I quickly ordered my copy of TFH on Amazon. I loved the book; online support is paramount to my success. My protocol was always TMAD and 16:8, but there were times when I would hit a plateau when I would extend my fasts for longer to get the pounds budging again. Once I reached my goal weight and I was in maintenance mode, I had to adjust my eating and fasting windows to find my “sweet spot”. If I have overindulged during weekends or vacations, I have the tools to keep any weight gain in check. Flexibility is key! I like to stay between 158-165 lbs. and not go over that. I feel that I'm at my healthiest at 160 lbs. My “why” is my son Van. He was 20 years old when his father died, and I needed to be healthy for him and, of course, for myself. We need each other more than ever! Our Patreon Supporters Community Please consider joining the Fasting Highway Patreon community. It has been great for all who have joined. It has become an excellent add-on to our Patreon members' IF lifestyle, who enjoy a lot of bonus content to support them in living an IF life. For less than a cup of coffee a month, you can join and support your own health goals. Graeme hosts three Zoom meetings monthly in the Northern and Southern hemispheres for members to come and get support for their IF lifestyle, which has proven very popular with our Patreon members. You will not find anywhere that provides that kind of support and accountability for just 0.16 cents a day. I cannot urge you more strongly to give it your utmost consideration. This week, meditation teacher Holly Rogers leads us in a guided meditation for moving on. Life often presents us with challenges and discomfort. This practice is a gentle guide to navigating those moments with grace and clarity. Acceptance, as Holly reminds us, is not about liking or agreeing with what's happening; it's about acknowledging the truth of the present moment. By learning to embrace each moment as it is, without layering on resistance or judgments, we can ease the suffering that often accompanies adversity. Since 2016, Grade 9 students at WAB have been taking part in ‘Infinity Week', which as the name suggests is a week where students can explore an infinite number of interests and passions. The aim is to give students the option to try something completely new, get a taste for self-directed learning ahead of the Grade 10 Personal Project, and encourage making a positive impact in the community. This year, for the first time, students have the option between off-campus projects focusing on six different themes and on-campus projects based on any topic of interest. Off-campus options include working with the hearing-impaired community and learning sign language, volunteering at an animal shelter & creating awareness-raising campaigns, learning about sustainability by visiting a zero-waste school and volunteering at a local thrift store, working with children at a Leukemia ward school, and learning about urban farming and biodiversity. Angelia Crouch, WAB's Global Citizenship Coordinator is particularly excited about the off-campus offerings this year. In the latest episode of the WAB Podcast, she explains: “I was really excited by the types of things that kids chose to spend their time doing. It says a lot about our students at WAB that giving 14-year-olds a whole week to do something, and seeing that just about every single one of them are meaningful. And we did want them to think about not just ‘me' but ‘we' in their planning and in how they were going to collaborate with their peers.” Those students choosing to stay on campus are also delving into a fascinating and diverse range of topics, covering everything from music and filmmaking, to storytelling to disease research and more. They get to work on projects individually or in groups and take complete ownership of their learning. Also joining this week's podcast are High School Vice Principal Brent Abrahams, who started Infinity Week seven years ago, and Holly Rogers, the Grade Level Learning Leader for Grade 9. The conversation explores how infinity week came about, the learning outcomes it aims to achieve and the exciting projects students will be working on. Tune in to our podcast for an in-depth exploration of Infinity Week and the upcoming community event featuring presentations by Grade 9 students. Keep an eye on WAB Weekly for details about the event.

In her book, The Mindful Twenty-Something (New Harbinger, 2016), Holly Rogers presents a unique, evidence based approach to help you make important life decisions with clarity and confidence. As cofounder of the extremely popular Koru Mindfulness program developed at Duke University, her work with students serves as inspiration for this book. As a twenty-something, you may feel like you are being pulled in dozen different directions. With the daily tumult, busyness, and major life changes you experience as a young adult, you may also be particularly vulnerable to stress and its negative effects. Emerging adulthood, which occurs between the ages of 18 and 29, is a developmental stage of life when you’re faced with important decisions about school, relationships, sex, your career, and more. With so much going on, you need a guide to help you navigate with less stress and more ease. The Koru Mindfulness program, developed at Duke University and already in use on numerous college campuses—including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth, and several others—and in treatment centers across the country, is the only evidence-based mindfulness training program for young adults that has been empirically proven to have significant benefits for sleep, perceived stress, and self-compassion. Now, with The Mindful Twenty-Something, this popular program is accessible to all young adults struggling with stress. With Koru Mindfulness and the practical tools you’ll learn from this acceptance-based, proven effective approach, you’ll be able to cultivate the compassion and mindfulness skills you need to manage life’s challenges from a calm, balanced center, regardless of what comes your way. Today's episode should be called mindfulness for hyper-driven skeptics with no time. Holly Rogers is a psychiatrist at the student counseling center at Duke University and the co-founder of the center for Koru Mindfulness. Holly's training as a psychiatrist provides a repertoire of research for the benefits of mindfulness, such as improving cardiovascular health, building a tolerance for discomfort, and my personal favorite: noticing tiny pain points with clarity and making adjustments that compound over time. We also discuss the “lowest effective dose" (10 minutes for 4 weeks), why today's college students are way more anxious than in the past, and why mid-life crisis seem to be starting earlier. + SHOW NOTES: bit.ly/radpod26 + JOIN THE COMMUNITY: http://radreads.email + SUPPORT THE PODCAST: patreon.com/radreads

This guided meditation helps you to foster a sense of acceptance. Acceptance isn't about agreeing with something. This week on Relationships 2.0 my guest is Holly B. Rogers, MD author of The Mindful Twenty-Something: Life Skills to Handle Stress…& Everything Else While my daughter (and co-author of Communication Skills for Teens) was home from college, we had the opportunity to chat with Holly about her new book. About the book: In The Mindful Twenty-Something, the cofounder of the extremely popular Koru Mindfulness program developed at Duke University presents a unique, evidence-based approach to help you make important life decisions with clarity and confidence. With Koru Mindfulness and the practical tools you’ll learn from this acceptance-based, proven-effective approach, you’ll be able to cultivate the compassion and mindfulness skills you need to manage life’s challenges from a calm, balanced center, regardless of what comes your way. About the author: Holly Rogers, M.D. is one of the developers of Koru, an evidence-based program for teaching mindfulness and meditation to college-age adults.
