It is one of the best weekends of the year for motorsport people in this country, the Australian Grand Prix. A heaving motorsport festival that drags 450,000 people onto thestreets around Albert Park Lake in Melbourne, and billions on TV sets worldwide. And we are back in pole position as the first race of the year, which means the unknown. Testing suggests the pecking order is McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and then Red Bull, but by the end of Sunday, we'll know if that is crap or not.Can Oscar Piastri win the Australian Grand Prix? Will Jack Doohan do enough to settle the drama around his drive, and why Alpine should just let him do his job? Then there's the other 'Aussie' Liam Lawson at Red Bull—a triple Antipodean attack that will make the racing even more interesting for us. Anyway, we pull out our crystal balls and give them a run.Plus, we've got all the latest news and views, from driver swaps in Supercars to Christopher Bell dominating NASCAR. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

In the latest episode, we discuss Allen Toussaint's great story-song "Fortune Teller",  a fave of garage bands throughout the 60s. Benny Spellman authored the original version and it has that nice New Orleans swampiness - piano, clave, horns, and great backing vocals. What a gumbo! The second rendition is a cute one from the very early Rolling Stones, who add a Orientalist riff and harmonica to their arrangement -& Charlie Watt's drumming keeps the song chugging along nicely. The third version comes from Tony Jackson & The Vibrations: TJ had just left The Searchers because he wanted to have a tougher sound - and this riff proves it! The vocals are too Mersey, though. A reprieve from the rockin' sounds and a return to the horn-y and piano-drive feel of the original from Alabama's The Del-Rays is up next. It's punchy and groovy and it's the best "Spellman twist" since the original, but the vocal needs more swagger - bring back Mick Jagger! Some Australian troglodytes called The Throb had an Antipodean hit in '66, it's Stones-y, nuff said! We end the spell with a recent-ish number by Robert Plant & Allison Krauss: it's a lot different than the others, but Erik quibbles with the mid-aughtie's production. Ba ba ba ba!!

We're chatting about the comics you liked as a little kiddo this week! The topic was inspired by a thread in the DD forums. This is always a fun topic and I always have to mention Asterix because it was so amazing. This week Tantz had to bow out but we have Gunwallace to replace her, and Banes is back! Gunwallace is a fellow Antipodean, that means he and I share many of the same cultural touch stones, particularity the comic Footrot Flats. (Tantz is still on the Patreon only video) Footrot Flats is a newspaper comic by the New Zealand creator Murry Ball. It's about a working sheepdog called “Dog” who lives on a farm owned by Wal, a single guy who works hard, drinks beer, and loves rugby. It's a comic that Australians saw as very “Australian” because it played into the mythological rural, working class image that we invented for ourselves, New Zealanders who have a similar history and felt the same, hence the shared popularity of this amazing very classically Kiwi comic from New Zealand. Footroot flats comics be seen in many great collected works as well as an awesome animated film from the 1980s called “Footrot flats: The Dog's tale”. I fondly remember it for the hit theme song sung by New Zealand singer Dave Dobbin, “Slice of Heaven” which is one of my favourite ever songs. Gunwallace has even designed a cocktail inspired by it. I will list the recipe here and I urge to try it while listening to that song! Cocktail recipe! Slice of Heaven — Dave Dobbyn & Herbs 50 ml Beerenburg jenever herbal gin 20 ml Drambuie 2 dashes bitters Half-fill an Old Fashioned Glass with ice, pour ingredients into glass. Add dashes of bitters. Stir gently. Garnish with a slice of orange. We used : Sonnema Berenburg, Drambuie, Peychaud's Bitters -New Zealand Music Cocktails by David Tulloch & Michael Sutorius The comics you enjoyed as a kid are determined by what was available to you at the time. For me what I recall most are the newspaper strips like Modesty Blaise, Mandrake the Magician, Wizard of Id, Crock, B.C., Footrot Flats, Hagar the Horrible, Peanuts, Blondie, Denis the Menace (British version), Andy Cap, Torkan,The Far Side, Garfield… The comics I actually bought were the Commando war comics, Scrooge McDuck, Mad Magazine, and The Phantom, which was very popular in British Commonwealth countries. I loved Asterix but would only get those from the library. Looking back a lot of those comics were quite influential on my art style and even my outlook on the world in some cases. My character Pinky has a LOT of modesty Blaise in her look, and I can see that I thought of myself as Torkan! Which comics did YOU like as a kid, which can you say STILL influence you now?   This week Gunwallace has given us a theme inspired by Snake in the Office - Chaotic, sexy, rocking, snake charming to layers of groovy electric guitar and a piano tiptoeing around with a charming little tune tying it all together like a fine Persian rug! A sinuous synth clarinet impersonates a snake charming flute while giving us a lovely 1920s feel. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to Misha Saul, the host of the Kvetch Substack. Saul is a first-generation Jewish Australian, born in Georgia (former Soviet republic), who grew up in Adelaide and now lives in Sydney. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with degrees in commerce and law. His day job is in finance, but the Kvetch highlights his interests in history and Jewish culture. Razib and Saul discuss extensively the differences and similarities between the US and Australia, and how each relates to other Anglophone nations like Canada, New Zealand and of course the UK. Saul asserts though Australia leans into its frontier reputation, in reality it is much more of a bureaucratic-ruled nation than the US, albeit with more of a Scots-Irish flavor than comparatively middle-class New Zealand. He also contrasts the relatively generous welfare-state of Australia and America's inequality, which he describes by analogy to the film 2013 Elysium, with its contrast between an earth dominated by favelas and a well-manicured low-earth orbit utopia for the super rich. They also discuss the geographical and cultural coherency of a vast nation like Australia, which has a desert at its center. Saul mentions it is often actually cheaper to fly to and vacation in Bali or another Asian locale than going to Perth from Sydney. Despite the reality that Australia has exotic fauna, it is notably an overwhelmingly urban society, where few have any interaction with the “bush.” Though Australians appreciate archetypes like “Crocodile Dundee,” Saul paints a picture of a much more urbane reality. Razib asks about the phenomenon of “white-presenting” Aboriginals, and Saul argues all societies look somewhat crazy from the outside because of their shibboleths, and the debates around Aboriginality are Australia's. As an immigrant and first-generation Australian, Saul also discusses Australia's immigration system, which strictly controls and regulates migration. Saul argues that because of the high educational and skill qualifications most Australian immigrants assimilate well, and he contends that there is a broad consensus to maintain strict limits on inflows. He argues that the Anglo-Australian identity is strong enough that the assimilative process continues to work even with the large number of Asians from China and India, who have triggered nativist worries and political activism.

Hey you, welcome back to another top quality episode of Trve. Cvlt. Pop! On this weeks episode we would like to introduce you to a NEW voice on the show; our brand new correspondent all the way from the other side of the world, the lovely Alasdair Belling. Who will be poppping up here and there to give us the lowdown on what's happening in the Australian music scene. As a way to get us going Alasdair has picked what he believes are the 10 most essential, important and definitive albums released by Australian artists since the start of the 2010's (and one a little bit before that actually). We also talk about last weeks BRIT Award ceremony (Kylie won the Global Icon Award, so we're keeping it on brand) and share the news that one of our favourite British hardcore bands, Palm Reader, are calling it a day... there's no Antipodean link there I'm afraid. Sorry about that.  ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This one's a doozy - 4 versions of "Be My Baby" and a close relative! The first-born by The Ronettes is so good it's disqualified from the Bo Diddley Awards. We discuss Ronnie's "vibrato in a phone booth," Hal Blaine's boom-crash, the smiley backing vocals and so much more! The second child comes from the same year of 1963, it's by The Georgettes. Girl group workhorse Rickie Page makes you almost forget the absence of the Wall of Sound! A visit from a kissin' cousin comes third, "Don't Worry Baby" by The Beach Boys. Is Brian Wilson's homage to Ronnie and Spector about a love triangle between a boy, his car, and his girl? The difficult middle child is by Antipodean adorables The Pleazers. Jangle & fuzz, what else do you need? Well, this one has more than even that! The baby of the bunch is by Reperata and the Delrons, who rebel against the dirtbag sound of 1970 by evoking the Golden Age of Girl Groups. This one will make you happy, just wait & see!!

In the 1890s Australian and New Zealand women became the first in the world to win the vote. Buoyed by their victories, they promised to lead a global struggle for the expansion of women's electoral rights. Charting the common trajectory of the colonial suffrage campaigns, James Keating's book Distant Sisters: Australasian Women and the International Struggle for the Vote, 1880-1914 (Manchester UP, 2020) uncovers the personal and material networks that transformed feminist organising. Considering intimate and institutional connections, well-connected elites and ordinary women, this book argues developments in Auckland, Sydney, and Adelaide―long considered the peripheries of the feminist world―cannot be separated from its glamourous metropoles. Focusing on Antipodean women, simultaneously insiders and outsiders in the emerging international women's movement, and documenting the failures of their expansive vision alongside its successes, this book reveals a more contingent history of international organising and challenges celebratory accounts of fin-de-siècle global connection. Born and raised in South Africa, Nick's heart was set on being a world-class chef from an early age. Nick's burning passion for cooking led him to Sydney, where he enrolled in a rigorous four-year cooking school course. He completed it in under three years, going on to sharpen his skills at some of the city's most luxurious hotels.Nick's next stop was Tokyo, landing a position at Iron Chef Sakai Hirotia's restaurant, La Rochelle, before spending a year in Paris working for two of the city's most renowned Michelin-starred chefs, Pascal Barbot at L'Astrance and Alain Passard at L'Arpège. His culinary excellence did not go unnoticed, being tapped to work under Justin North at Becasse in Sydney before making his way to New Zealand to work for Simon Wright at The French Café, an icon in the kiwi fine dining scene. His talent led him to leading several award-winning restaurants in Auckland such as Dallow's, Cru at Sale St, and The Commons Restaurant, as well as Everybody's Izakaya. Nick then stepped out on his own, creating two acclaimed restaurants - Auckland's Paris Butter (Two Hats), and his seasonal restaurant, Le Petit Léon, nestled in the serene south of France.Paris Butter is an amalgamation of fine dining techniques and interpretative French cuisine, all of which have been innovatively adapted to celebrate New Zealand's famous local produce with the occasional playful nod to Antipodean nostalgia. Nick's cuisine has made Paris Butter a fixture in Cuisine Magazine's Top 50, a favourite of diners, chefs and critics alike.Le Petit Léon, which he runs alongside model-turned-restaurant manager, sommelier and wife, Sina Honeyman, showcases Nick's thoughtfully-crafted cuisine in a countryside setting bursting with hospitality, family, authenticity, and a true love for their local community.Nick Honeyman's influence has surpassed the kitchen, leading his own show, "The Best of New Zealand with Nick Honeyman," as well as appearing in the ever-popular My Kitchen Rules and Masterchef.Websites https://restaurantlepetitleon.fr/https://parisbutter.co.nz/Social Media:https://www.instagram.com/restaurantlepetitleon/https://www.instagram.com/parisbutter/https://www.instagram.com/chefhoneyman/

Welcome to episode 1033 in which host Polly Hammond interviews Darren Oemke, this week on Uncorked. Today, I am excited to interview a friend and one of the smartest fellas working in wine, Darren Oemcke. A straight-shooting Australian, Darren has experience in all walks of the wine world: engineering, production, technology, marketing, mentoring, teaching, whew…and in his spare time, he still manages to catch a few waves. In this episode, we settle in for a good ol' Antipodean chat about what we love in wine, what we'd loved to see change, and even what we can learn from the surfing community. Let's get into it! More about today's guest: Dr. Darren Oemcke is the co-founder of Hydra Consulting. Hydra works with businesses of any size to build capacity through process improvements, integration of technology and building customer relationships. Darren's PhD in engineering gives him a unique look at business process that helps Hydra's clients achieve remarkable results. When he's not helping businesses reshape themselves, you'll find Darren surfing any break he can find. As the president of Surfing South Australia, he's committed to ensuring the future of surfing through events, competitions and education. In 2021 Darren was appointed as an independent chair of Riverland Wine, writes for Australian Wine Business magazine, consults to large and small wine businesses, start-ups and incubator/accelerator programmes, and speaks globally on everything from tech to sustainability to building better business. To learn more visit: https://hydraconsulting.com.au/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrenoemcke/ https://twitter.com/darrenoemcke https://twitter.com/fomentaus More about the host: Polly is Founder and CEO of 5forests. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today's wine businesses. She's an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. With over 20 years' experience in growing successful companies, Polly knows first-hand the challenges faced by independent businesses.
