Before the pandemic, we typically saw 45% to 50% of all adults and students serving on a volunteer team at least monthly. Our most recent data shows churches reporting only 35% are serving today. In the first episode of this series on "Serving as Spiritual Formation," we talked about some of the most common mistakes churches make with their volunteer engagement strategy that are contributing to that shortage of volunteers. But in this second episode, we're going to look at the structural mistakes churches make that lead to low volunteer engagement. Tony and Amy talk about the structure of churches that engage the most volunteers in serving roles, and specifically, how this needs to be considered a spiritual formation issue. Members will inevitably attach themselves to certain leaders in the church. In multiple-staff churches, this attachment is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, you should expect church members to get close to some of the staff, especially if they serve in their ministries. On the other hand, these constituencies can become problematic when used as leverage to influence the direction of the church. “And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Jeremiah 3:15Brian Kluth is a best-selling author of several books on generosity. He was a pastor himself for 10 years and is now the national spokesman for the annual Bless Your Pastor initiative, which is organized by the National Association of Evangelicals. Tell us about the three-step program for blessing pastors and church staff. The three steps are:1. Download free materials for your church and share them with church leaders, including a flier titled "50 Ways to Bless Your Pastor and Church Staff.2. Take up an appreciation offering. 3. Publicly honor the pastor and staff.Completing these steps allows pastors to receive a marriage retreat scholarship to a Weekend to Remember and access other free and discounted retreat and vacation opportunities. Over 3,000 churches have already participated in this program. What are some examples from the "50 Ways to Bless Your Pastor" resource? The resource provides ideas on how to pray for your pastor, affirm your pastor, encourage them, and offer practical assistance. Examples include offering dental care, car repairs, lawn care, and other practical acts of service. The goal is to show deep appreciation for those who minister in the church, as encouraged by 1 Thessalonians 5:12. How does collecting an appreciation offering work (Step 2)?Leaders inform the congregation that they will collect an appreciation offering for the pastor and church staff. This offering is a gift to help pastors and staff, many of whom may have limited financial resources. It can make a significant difference in their lives, especially during times like Christmas. Give an example of what celebrating (Step 3) looks like.Celebrating can involve various forms of recognition or appreciation, such as public prayers, appreciation meals, or handwritten notes. The key is to honor pastors and church staff publicly to show appreciation for their service. All materials and information can be found at blessyourpastor.org, available in both English and Spanish. Here you'll learn why honoring and learning from the wisdom of senior leaders in ministry or other organizations is imperative when the next generation is preparing to take a seat of leadership. As ministers, staff members and pastor's kids, Christopher Alessi and his sister Stephanie Muiña discuss the importance of the next generation partnering with and learning from the older generation, recognizing their wisdom and honoring their contributions. When we talk about church planting, we often discuss vision casting, mission, and context. But churches also need a good team to lead in the daily ministry. Pastors are tasked with building a cohesive team, resolving conflicts, and doing all they can to make sure everyone is focused and working toward the goal of making disciples of Jesus Christ. But if you've never led a church staff before, where do you begin? Who should you hire first? What should staff meetings look like? To help answer these questions, we're joined by Josh Patterson. Josh serves as a Lead Pastor of The Village Church in Flower Mound, TX. Josh received his Doctorate in Executive Leadership from Southern Seminary and is also a co-author of the book, “Creature of the Word.”
