This week, Wes, Sonia, and Noah discuss the second part of chapter 3, "Here's Where God Is Taking You," in How People Change, by Timothy S. Lane and Paul David Tripp. Often, when we're longing for change, we look around in disappointment at "what is" in our lives and dream about "what could be," instead. As Lane and Tripp point out, frequently God works for our good not by changing our circumstances, but by changing us in the midst of our circumstances.Click here to purchase a copy of the book: https://www.amazon.com/How-People-Change-Timothy-Lane/dp/1934885533

Imagine if you will that we are together in a big, unfamiliar city standing on a street corner. What do you see, hear and smell? We are waiting for the signal to turn at an intersection and we are lost—we are imaginary lost, including not having our phones or GPS. We must look really lost as a kind stranger comes up to help us. The idea of not having Siri or a map application could terrify you. A kind stranger has given us directions, but has it solved our problem if we deviate from our directions? She has in her mind a big picture view of the city. She knows the how the neighborhoods connect and the streets intersect. Part of the framework for today's presentation comes from the book, How People Change. We are going to provide a tool for how to navigate the Bible from a big picture.

And Julius treated Paul kindly and gave him leave to go to his friends and be cared for. 4 And putting out to sea from there we sailed under the lee of Cyprus, because the winds were against us. 5 And when we had sailed across the open sea along the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia. 6 There the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing for Italy and put us on board. 7 We sailed slowly for a number of days and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind did not allow us to go farther, we sailed under the lee of Crete off Salmone. 8 Coasting along it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea. ------------------ 5 Core Values of SWAT 1. Biblical authority is under attack. A missionary's job is partly to make the transcendents truths of God's word understandable within human language, context, and culture. Is change possible for me? Is it really possible for me to be like that fruitful tree that stays green even in the raging desert heat? Is it really possible for me to overcome my anger? My insecurity? My anxiety? My fears? My laziness? My self doubt? My weakness in relationships? My impatience? My addiction? According to to the message of Jesus, the answer is a resounding yes. 100% yes. The work that Jesus begins in your heart through the gospel is a work that is not ceased until it is complete. Not only this, it is a work that brings the biggest guns that God has in his arsenal into our very hearts. Therefore, as christians, we must learn to tap into these resources. We must learn to live a life that is marked by habits and rhythms of life that are constantly unpacking the power of God in our hearts. This week we unpack three essential spiritual habits that help unlock the power of the change that Jesus brings into our lives. Enjoy the show! On this episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Emily Jensen about idols of the heart. We discuss everything from our personal struggles with idolatry to practical ways we can move forward in repentance after seeing our sin. If you know Emily, it goes without saying that we talked about resting in the grace of the Gospel. She said, “It’s always important to remember with idolatry like, this isn’t something that we do on our own. This is something God did on our behalf. That causes us to just be humble and grateful and in awe of God. That’s a key thing. When we are in awe of God and when we are grateful for what he has done, it makes us want to worship Him more and it helps us deal with our idol problem.”   Talking with Emily opened up my eyes to see that while there are lots of little idols I’ve conjured up, they all revolve around ME! My biggest problem really is myself. Understanding that I genuinely am struggling with making much of myself more than anything else has humbled me in the best of ways, providing a sweet opportunity to preach the Gospel to myself and to those around me.   I am continually learning about how the Gospel infiltrates every area of my life and God has really used Emily and her sister-in-law, Laura, to help me flesh that out practically as I listen to their podcast, Risen Motherhood. Emily has been married for eight years, is a mother to five young children, and has a passion for sharing gospel-centered truth with women. I am so grateful we have the opportunity to hear from her today on the topic of idolatry.     EMILY’S RESOURCES X Ray Questions by David Powleson Knowing the Bible so that we can counsel our hearts with it Praying in accordance with God’s will Community: surrounding ourselves with people who are going to encourage us to believe the truth How People Change by Paul David Tripp New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp Awe by Paul David Tripp Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul David Tripp Parenting by Paul David Tripp A Gospel Primer by Milton Vincent     EMILY’S SIMPLE JOYS Magic Merlin Sleep Suit Hymns on Youtube like He will Hold Me Fast, How Firm a Foundation, Come Ye Sinners, Not in Me, I Asked the Lord Wood burning fires (indoor)     CONNECT WITH EMILY Website Facebook Instagram Risen Motherhood Instagram   SPONSORSHIP DETAILS ibleedheART, owned by Ashley Reagan, offers a wide variety of original artwork; from hand painted canvas shoes, to feather earrings made from embroidery thread, to watercolor and acrylic paintings on canvas. ibleedheART was founded after Ashley's art journey brought her peace and comfort during her personal experiences of heartache and loss. Present Grace - Part 4 Fruit and Thorns We live with trouble everyday. From a Christian perspective, we believe this is because of sin. I have sin within me. You have sin within you. When we get together - often sin leaks out. If that's not bad enough, we also live in a fallen world with disease, poverty, violence and death. These things affect us all. In their book, How People Change, Timothy Lane and David Tripp present an illustration of how we live and react to the fallen world around us. They call it the Heat, Thorns, Cross, Fruit diagram. Heat - What is your situation? Boss make you mad? Children not listening to you? Parents not listening to you? Conflict with your spouse? Struggling financially? Chronic illness? Living in this fallen world is like living in the heat of the desert. The big question is not whether or not we will experience heat; the Bible is clear that we will face trouble. The big question is, how do we respond? Do we respond in a sinful way or in a godly way? Jeremiah 17:5-8 Two men. One is like a bush in the wastelands. The other is like a tree that constantly bears fruit - even in a drought. What makes the difference in the two men? It is where they put their trust, their confidence. Where they get there strength. The profound thing about this passage is that two men may be planted together, they may experience the same times of drought - hardship, conflict, discouraging times - but their responses are totally different. One is like a shriveled, thorn bush. The other is like a tree that produces fruit - even in a drought. Thorns - How do you react? Not only do I sin and you sin, but when someone sins against us, what do we do? We often sin in response. Our natural response is what the Bible calls foolish fleshly wisdom. We respond by avoiding, blaming, controlling. We engage in escaping sins, getting angry, and impatient. The Bible is clear, our responses are not forced upon us. Mark‬ ‭7‬:‭20-23‬ He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” Your response comes from inside you. The ugliness of your mouth, that came from your heart. The terrible thing about our sinfulness is that we sin, and feel justified about it. Is it right to be angry at someone and spread slander about them? Is it right to be frustrated about work and come home and be impatient with your children? Is it right to be numb your hurts with TV or alcohol or food? No, those are all thorns - sinful responses to heat. The good news of the Bible is that you and I are not destined to sinful responses. Cross - Who is God and what does he say and do in Christ? The Bible gives us the direction. Galatians 5:19-21 Acts of the sinful nature Galatians 5:22-26 Fruit of the Spirit Jesus gives us the model or example of a godly, fruitful response. What is a right and godly reaction to unjust circumstance? Look to Christ. 1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭22-23‬ “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. Remember the two trees? We can be like the thorn bush or the tree with fruit. Proverbs 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Fruit - How is God calling me to seek him in repentance and faith?
