Chandler Levack is another of the current class of talented Candian ladies directing fresh, original cinema. Her latest is MILE END KICKS (starring Barbie Ferreira)…and, at the same moment, ROOMMATES, a Happy Madison film starring Sadie Sandler. And she memorably broke onto screen with festival darling I LIKE MOVIES. She joins Jordan to give us a fresh look at our show's most relatable multi-hyphenate, Greta Gerwig. Chandler tells stories inspired by the desire to revisit her own history, and the result (like FRANCES HA or LADYBIRD for Gerwig) is somehow universally relatable. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about a little movie that could called Blind Cop 2 (read her feature about it from The Action Desk!) Help support this show and unlock bonus content! GG Hawkins talks with writer-director Chandler Levack about making I Like Movies, Mile End Kicks, and Roommates, and how Levack protects a specific filmmaking voice while moving between indie features and studio comedy. They discuss the realities of Canadian film financing, directing with limited time and bigger resources, building cinematic worlds through research and memory, and why filmmakers have to keep making work instead of treating one movie as their only chance. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Chandler Levack discuss... How I Like Movies helped open doors for Mile End Kicks Why Mile End Kicks had to be shot in Montreal's Mile End neighborhood The overlap of finishing one film while prepping and shooting another What changed when Levack moved from indie filmmaking to a studio comedy How music journalism shaped Levack's directing and world building Why specificity in props, costumes, locations, and character details matters Navigating male-dominated creative spaces as a woman filmmaker The value and complications of film criticism Building a body of work through collaboration, experimentation, and persistence Memorable Quotes: “For me, I mean I'm obsessed with specificity.” “I think for me once I realized that filmmaking is just talking about treating fake people like they're real…” “It's weird. It's the only job where you're failing in public…” “The greatest thing you can do as a filmmaker is just exist and keep making stuff good and bad and having a body of work is like the most important thing…” Guests: Chandler Levack Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram

This week on End Credits, we grow up. The movie this week is another coming of age story about a young person finding themselves but the twist is that it's a Canadian movie about a Canadian in Canada. We will review Mile End Kicks, which you can now (and should) see in theatres everywhere, and we will also talk about *that* festival in France! This Wednesday, April 22, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Tim Phillips will discuss: Yes We Cannes. In a couple of weeks, Hollywood heads to the south of France for the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival. What makes Cannes different? Well, it's exclusively for people in the industry, and the press, so you can't just line up and buy rush tickets, but in recent years it's been more famous for how long people stand and clap at the end, or whether or not they booed. Instead, we'll talk about some of our favourite Cannes movie premieres. REVIEW: Mile End Kicks (2026). The year is 2011, and the place is Montreal. Aspiring Toronto Burlington music critic Grace Pine is here to find love (or at least sex) and write a book about Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill, but sometimes important life lessons and the lead singer of an up and coming band have other ideas. Chandler Levack's follow-up to I Like Movies is another coming of age slice from her own life, but can Levack capture that same magic, not to mention a sense of nostalgic early 21st century Canadiana, again? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Canadian filmmaker Chandler Levack's debut film I Like Movies was a huge hit, earning praise from folks like Adam Sandler and establishing Chandler as one to watch. Now, Chandler is back with her second film, called Mile End Kicks, that taps into her real-life story as a young music journalist coming up in Montreal. Chandler joins Tom Power in the Q studio to talk about mining her own life for art, depicting 2011's Montreal, and working with Adam Sandler on her next film.
This week, we've got filmmaker Chandler Levack who actually has two new films out. The first is Mile End Kicks which is based on her own life as a music journalist and is set against the backdrop of the Montreal music scene of the late '00s and early '10s. The other film is comedy Roommates which was made for Netflix under Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company. We talked to Chandler about recreating the Montreal of her 20s for Mile End Kicks, getting the music and other details right, getting indie musicians to score her movies, how she got hooked up with Adam Sandler's company just after releasing her terrific, feature film debut, I Like Movies, Montreal bands she thinks deserve more attention, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein Photo: Greg Gorman
Welcome to I Like Movies, this episode we discuss the 1997 Robin Williams "classic" Flubber - basically head trauma porn.
A deep dive conversation based on the moviescramble.co.uk review written by Mary Munoz. Socially awkward 17-year-old cinephile, Lawrence Kweller, played by Isaiah Lehtinen, is self-absorbed and movie-obsessed. Fully convinced he can earn $90,000 to achieve his dream of attending film school at NYU, he gets a part-time job at Sequels video store. Their older store manager, Alana, played by Romina D'Ugo, takes him under her wing. Meanwhile, Lawrence sabotages every high school relationship he has with his narcissistic film snobbery. Faced with the impending reality of university life, Lawrence must change his ways. I Like Movies is a 2022 Canadian comedy-drama film written and directed by Chandler Levack. Set in the early 2000s, the film stars Isaiah Lehtinen as Lawrence, a socially inept 17-year-old cinephile who gets a job at a video store, where he forms a complicated friendship with his older female manager. The film is produced by Lindsay Blair Goeldner with an original score by Murray Lightburn from the Dears. Its cast also includes Romina D'Ugo, Krista Bridges, Percy Hynes White, Dan Beirne, Andy McQueen, Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, and Alex Ateah. Levack has described the film as being based in part on her own teenage job in a video store, although she has stated that she chose to write the central character as male out of a desire to push back against the popular notion that women filmmakers can only tell female-oriented stories. The project was first announced as receiving funding from Telefilm Canada's Talent to Watch program for emerging filmmakers in 2019, under the working title Rejects Night. I Like Movies had its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2022. Director Emily Elizabeth Thomas joins Matt and Oren to talk about her journey from commercial success to directing vertical series and feature films.Meanwhile, Oren's been updating his website and shares some valuable insights on what to include in your reel, what to leave out, and why it matters. And that leads into Matt sharing some insightful data on how many views a reel gets per day.Back to Emily—she's all about making everything feel like a movie, even a vertical series. She shares how she fought for that vision and explains how shooting open gate helped convince producers they could save money doing it her way. And maybe even make more with some luck.At her core, Emily is a craft-driven filmmaker with a passion for detail. She talks about her love for set design and working with artisanal couturiers to find the perfect accessories, like a custom western hat from Austin or hours spent digging through costumes at Warner Brothers. The episode wraps with practical tips on surgically using tools like jibs, Steadicams, and Technocrane (yeah the gear producers often assume is out of budget) to maximize production value and scope on a tight budget. You can find Emily here:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm8502506/https://www.electriccowgirl.xyz/IG: @emilyelizabeththomas/---Matt's Endorsement: Letterboxd's interview with the stars of "I Like Movies" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE1kANkYGSw and the movie itself https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14913282/ Oren's Endorsement: The book "Linchpin" by Seth Godin https://seths.store/linchpin/. Last week we had a great time talking movies with our Canadian friend Marta Djordjevic, so we figured we'd keep it going and double down with another Canadian guest AND a Canadian film (and stay tuned in the post show to potentially hear Marta about this week's film)!I Like Movies is writer/director Chandler Levack's 2022 directorial debut and it's a complete delight. It's very funny, it's sweet, it's sad, it's cringey, and it beautifully captures a period of life that everyone can relate to whether or not they are a movie lover. It's currently streaming on Kanopy & Hoopla, available to rent on your digital retailer of choice, and is also probably on DVD at your local library. Go check it out!We are also honored to have had the film's star Romina D'Ugo join us for this conversation! In the film, Romins plays the manager of the store that the protagonist gets a job at while he's attempting to save up enough money to go film school. Over the course of the movie, they grow close and ultimately both help each other move into the next stages of life. Way back when the show relaunched in 2020, we had planned on covering Abbas Kiarostami's Palme d'Or winning Taste of Cherry but I was overruled by my then cohosts who, at the time, were not terribly taken with the film. Now almost five years later, I'm excited to return to it with an even greater appreciation of it. I'm also delighted to be joined on this episode by my internet friend, film historian, critic, and podcaster Marta Djordjevic. Her former podcast, McFly's Movie House, is a treasure trove of insights and appreciation for cinema and a great way to build your watchlist. She's also a huge Kiarostami fan, with Taste of Cherry being one of her favorite films. **In this episode we do cover the topic of suicide, if you didn't watch or look up the movie**We also talk about the three arguments against it that the film depicts: community, morality, and beauty, we look at Kiarostami's career arc and personal style, why sometimes stories with harsh or challenging content can become comfort viewing for some, and more!Tune in next week for a back to back Substantive Cinema with Canadian ladies in the film world when actress Romina D'Ugo joins us to talk about her recent film I Like Movies.Substantive Cinema Episode ListShoutoutsNTS RadioHaruFollow MartaWebsiteInstagramLetterboxdSubstackFollow UsInstagramPhilip's LetterboxdShare Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us:Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.comDM on InstagramSupport Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod
Ian and Pat celebrate Valentine's Day with a candy-coated love-in for Chandler Levack's 2022 coming-of-age comedy, I Like Movies!Set in 2003,* the film stars Isaiah Lehtinen as Lawrence, a celluloid-obsessed high school student living in Canada, who dreams of studying film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He and his only friend, Matt (Perry Hynes White), make low-budget movies and spend their Saturday Nights watching Saturday Night Live. When Lawrence gets a job at the local video store to save for college, he meets a group of misfit adults--including "cool boss" Alana (Romina D'Ugo), on whom he inevitably develops a crush. This coincides with a series of personal tragedies that force Lawrence into a world he can neither reckon with nor rewind. In today's spoiler-lite review, the guys dig deep into Levack's phenomenally insightful and painstakingly authentic coming-of-age movie, which borrows from her own youth yet manages to capture the universal awkwardness, isolation, and small triumphs of teen-boydom.They also veer into Levack's uncanny ability to draw strong female characters in ways that utterly shame the mainstream cliche; tout I Like Movies's similarity to Adam Rehmeier's Dinner in America; and pull each other back from the Inception-like spiral of some of the film's deceptively simple creative choices!*Ian mistakenly said the movie took place in 2002, but according to the Internet, Punch-Drunk Love didn't hit home video until June of the following year (Paul Thomas Anderson's drama figures heavily in I Like Movies).Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the I Like Movies trailer.Read Ian's written review of I Like Movies at Kicking the Seat!Check out Ian's recent interview with the cast and filmmaker of Dinner in America (mentioned in the show)!Keep up with Pat at HollywoodChicago.com.Listen to Pat's movie reviews on the radio at STAR 96.7.
