Send us a textIn this Mental Minute episode, dive into the saga of 'The Showman and the Steadfast,' two baseball legends whose contrasting lives shaped an era. One, a larger-than-life figure, fueled his days with towering breakfasts, whiskey, and wild nights; the other, a paragon of discipline, started with oatmeal and relentless dedication. Explore how their habits—chaos versus order—crafted iconic legacies without one path being 'right.' Join us for a quick, thought-provoking journey into their triumphs, trials, and timeless lessons.Youtube Episode Link: https://youtu.be/TtXs7UUbCXkResearch Notes: Babe Ruth (“The Big Fella”): Biographies (e.g., Leavy's “The Big Fella”) detail his gluttony—18-egg omelets, bootleg whiskey, and cigars. His 1925 collapse and 1932 “called shot” are well-documented. Career: 714 home runs, 60 in 1927. Lou Gehrig (“The Luckiest Man”): Eig's “Luckiest Man” describes his simple diet, rigorous training, and ALS diagnosis in 1939, ending his 2,130-game streak. His July 4, 1939, speech is iconic. Was it an inside job? Was it dumb luck?  Is this guy who he says he is?   We had fun talking what the movie got right and what (admittedly) they took “artistic licensing with”.   40 years in the making and the movie and stars Paul Walter Hauser and Walton Goggins do not disappoint.     Follow CPP pretty much just on IG at: Carnival Personnel Podcast   Opening: The Press Your Luck 1984 Show Opening   Closing Song: The Press Your Luck 1984 Closing Theme

How much did we love Barbarian? Go back and listen to the episode and check it out. You can probably guess that we are very interested in the new movie from its writer-director. And if we already weren't, the creepy website would easily suck us in. The Hell House LLC franchise is an underrated series that are excellent examples of found footage horror. The news that the final installment comes out later this year is certainly excit- wait. It's not going to be found footage?Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time on YouTube has eventually stumbled across a video about the greatest game show scandals of all time. And the Press Your Luck incident is one of the most infamous. After memorizing the board, the former ice cream truck driver went on a record breaking run.The Luckiest Man in America chronicles the episode and everything surrounding it. It is a character driven story that is more about the people involved than the actual scandal itself. The film uses great performances, aesthetics, and an overall tone to tell its story. If only it had more Whammys and less Johnny Knoxville.Call of the Void sets itself up to be a crazy ride from its awesome opening. It is an atmosphere that lasts the entire runtime. It is a shame the filmmakers decided to go all in with being creepy and totally decided to ignore the writing. It is a great example of what happens when being vague and weird is more important than actually telling a story. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. They always follow their instincts but, strangely, they find themselves drawn to the most unlikely of guests: Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser). An unemployed ice cream truck driver, Larson is unruly and unkept yet there's something about him that the producers believe will make great television. But Larson is more than he seems, leaving the bewildered executives reeling as they attempt to uncover his real motivations. In this 1on1, we speak to Oliveros about why we're obsessed with game shows and whether Larson is a 'winner.'

Welcome back ragers to the best movie review podcast on the planet. The rage rolls on from the Film Rage Studio. This week the Film Rage Crew went and saw a whole bunch of underdog movies and a movie about a homicidal mouse. First up The Minecraft Movie which sounds like it should be awful but the boys will have the final say on that. Then Freaky Tales which surprised both Jim and Bryce in a good way. Next up Bryce was the only one that got the pleasure of watching Steamboat Willie slaughter a bunch of New Yorkers in Screamboat. Then Paul Walter Hauser shines again in The Luckiest Man in America. Then finally the legend of William Tell is brough to the big screen. Plus listen as Jim tries to put into words what he thought of his Rage or Dare movie, the Brendan Fraser cash grab, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. I think I blocked out the fact that said movie even existed. THE LUCKIEST MAN IN AMERICA MOVIE REVIEW In 1984, an unemployed ice cream truck driver named Michael Larson went on the game show Press Your Luck and broke the record for most money won on an American game show. Jason Fraley interviews Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser, who stars in the new movie “The Luckiest Man in America,” based on the true story of a game-show contestant who memorized the Whammy pattern on “Press Your Luck.” They also discuss his career highlights from “I, Tonya” to “Richard Jewell," “BlackKKlansman” to “Da 5 Bloods,” “Black Bird” to “The Afterparty.” (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")

With his stranger-than-fiction drama The Luckiest Man in America now in theaters across North America, director Samir Oliveros is here to celebrate a film most of you won't have seen: Ildikó Enyedi's On Body and Soul, a magic-realist tale of two Hungarian slaughterhouse workers connected by inexplicable circumstances. Your genial host Norm Wilner never thought he'd have the chance to talk about this one here, so that's a nice surprise.

The movie that is making some noise at the indie level is about the scandal that rocked 1984: Michael Larson took on Press Your Luck and walked away with $110,237 (roughly $339,000) in cash and prizes! Although the movie has a fun idea, there really isn't enough meat on the bones of this, but I still wanted to talk about it. Join in the fun as I talk about 1984, the culture of the time and what led to Larson never landing on the dreaded whammy in his 47 spins! If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of April 4, 2025. Despite not having any experience playing Minecraft, the game, Andy found "A Minecraft Movie"  to be funny and fun to watch with his kids--who DID know the game very well. But he might have found the best thing he has seen so far this year with "Bob Trevino Likes It." A heartwarming and heartbreaking story about a young woman who accidentally becomes online friends with a man who has the same name as her estranged father. Also likable is "The Luckiest Man in America," a movie based on the true story of the man who figured out how to become unstoppable on an '80s TV game show. For streaming, Netflix has a new medical drama series, "Pulse," starring Willa Fitzgerald.  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow.
