You Only Call Me When You're High ARCTIC MONKYES – R U Mine? This episode features the features Garrett Buckland in a conversation about strategies to adjust farming winegrapes during a changing climate. Garrett, who has been on the podcast before, is a consulting viticulturist based in Napa, and one of the first people I call with difficult vineyard questions. This podcast was recorded in July, 2020, a month before California suffered catastrophic fires across the state and affected nearly every winegrowing region on the Pacific Coast. Hindsight allows a perspective that reveals a glaring blind spot in our discussion of climate change. We never once mentioned fires nor smoke and yet that would become the defining element of the 2020 vintage. It was a part of climate change that we had under-appreciated in magnitude. I do believe there is a great deal of valuable discussion of technical viticulture in this episode with Garrett. He came through on my request to outline strategies to adjust vineyard practices to maximize vine health, farm high quality grapes, and think about how to farm grapes in changing climate. Season 2. Episode 4. And here’s the question we want to answer for history: In "There's Something About Mary," when Mary Jensen chose that dorky, neurotic, stalker, Ted Stroemann, over the handsome, confident, entrepreneur, Pat Healy, are we sure that she made the right choice? In the summer of 1998, Peter and Bobby Farrelly released a summer comedy that took the world by storm. “There’s Something About Mary” was not only the most successful gag comedy in over a decade, it celebrated the arrival of Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz as mega-stars. The world smiled, giggle, guffawed and winced as semen and a scrotum were used as props for hysterical effect. In the end, Stiller’s Ted wins the heart of Diaz’s Mary. But along the way, we can’t keep our eyes off of Pat Healy, played by Matt Dillon. Because the final resolution feels so forced and because Dillon is so astoundingly funny and oddly charismatic, it’s almost impossible not to want to revisit the character and Mary's decision. Join co-hosts Matty Wishnow and Kevin Blake as they reflect on the gargantuan success of the film and focus on Dillon’s most enduring, if unlikely, character. With the help of panelists Judd Wishnow and Christian Anthony, we ask: What’s the deal with Matt Dillion, elite bachelor and collector of Cuban vinyl records? Where does semen rank in the arsenal of hairstyle substitutes in an emergency situation? Was Woogie’s suggestion to Ted to “clean the pipes” before his big date good advice? Did Mary choose right in selecting Ted, or would Pat Healy have been a better match? Along the way, we learn a (very) little bit about Matt Dillon, we learn a lot about 1998 and we uncover the unlikely and unnerving truth about Mary’s choice: Pat never had a chance because Mary ultimately wanted a guy with a broken penis to sit around, eat hot dogs and watch SportsCenter with. Special thanks to Quincy, Gabe, Matt & the entire Blue Duck team for editing and sound design.
In "There's No Place Like This Place, Anyplace," Lulu Wei tells the story of Honest Ed's - a store that once dominated the intersection of Bathurst and Bloor in Toronto's Annex neighbourhood. What happened when the store and its surrounding area were sold off to a condo developer? Wei joins host Colin Ellis to discuss affordable housing, community consultation, and how to protect neighbourhoods. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today Bill and Dwan Twyford are going to conclude their very interesting and potentially profitable talk on No Equity Investing. Plus I have a good chance of getting caught up with questions from you. Coming up now on Flipping America. I realized about 5-6 years ago I was leaving money on the table by telling people there was nothing I could do. It took awhile to figure out a way to make money on a property with no real equity. And even though I eventually did, I didn’t have it down to an art like Bill and Dwan do. This is great stuff and there is a reason this call was one of the highest rated this year. Today we are going to hear the conclusion of the call they did with the Flipping America REIA a few weeks ago. And I finally have plenty of time for your questions. I think we have a shot to get completely caught up today. So now I need even more questions from you. Ask anything you want about real estate and I promise you an answer. News Questions Ken, Santa Barbara, CA “I can’t get my head around buying rental property 2000 miles away. Is there anyway to invest in cash-flowing property here in southern California?” Justin, Colorado Springs, CO “I’m about to put my first flip on the market. My question is, ‘do properties sell over the winter time? Would I be better off to wait until springtime to get more money?’” Alexis, Rosemont, IL “I have money from lottery winnings and I don’t want to be stupid with it. You are one of several people I’m asking. What would you do with $1.2 million?” I haven’t told anyone I won and I’m keeping my day job. I’m 31 and I don’t want this to ruin my life.” P.S. I’m not really from Rosemont, but trying to remain anonymous. Martin, Auburn, AL “I am trying to get started investing here - buying rental properties, but they are usually under contract the same day they are listed. I can’t seem to get out to the property fast enough. Any suggestions?” Hamida, Atlanta, GA “I don’t want to do a large rehab, but all of the deals I see require substantial work. This might not be the thing for me.” Gary, Indianapolis, IN “There are plenty of low-priced projects here. But not big margins. I can usually put about 60-80k in a flip and maybe make 10-15k. I hear people from other places talking about 100k profits and it just seems like a different world. Is it all that common? Chai, Philadelphia, PA, “I’m thinking about buying a flip in North Dakota, but it’s already cold there and I’m concerned about finishing it before it gets too cold. What do you know about flipping in winter there?” Elliott, Raleigh Durham, NC, “It seems like the market is hot all over the United States. How can this be in the midst of a pandemic? And are there any markets anywhere where things aren’t selling at all?” Deborah, Clinton, IA “How do you see the presidential election affecting real estate?” Motivational Quote: “Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”
Enrico Colantoni is back for the second half of our conversation in episode five. If you like ghost stories then look no further! We'll touch on some of the rather spooky and unexplainable events that occurred in the mountains in the Lake Arrowhead area of Southern California. But since I get scared easily by ghost stories we'll turn our attention to other topics including Canada, hockey and planting potatoes based on the cycles of the moon. One of the more poignant moments comes when Rico talks about his father and that his father had a connection to the earth and the moon - the environment. Rico's father didn't realize this dormant urge to be part of his surroundings again until he retired from his work in Toronto and moved back his native Italy. This contributes to one of the dominant themes of my conversation with Rico: how we can get trapped in a paradigm of survival. How we become sucked into a vortex that limits our ability to see more important things such as meditating under a tree or appreciating the outdoors as real and necessary. Finally, we'll have some fun with the 'Where in the World are You?' and 'What in the World Would You Do?' games. In our 3x3 Main Street Challenge we'll head to Flagstaff, Arizona and visit the good people at the Wanderlust Brewery and Flagstaff Climbing right there on Main Street in Flagstaff. Just 15 minutes from there is Walnut Canyon National Monument and a short 84 miles away is one of the seven wonders of the world also known as the Grand Canyon. In Where Art Meets Nature with DJ Shark we'll talk about one of the most important songs I've ever heard or will ever hear about our environment. It's time to look at Joni Mitchell's, Big Yellow Taxi. Here are the lyrics and a concert video to one of the most iconic and brilliant songs of the last 50 years by a true genius. In There's No Planet B we re-visit the Amazon rainforest in both Brazil and Peru. Chevron lost a major court case more than once BUT STILL HASN'T PAID THEIR FINES OR CLEANED UP THEIR MESS. Attorney Steven Donzinger is currently under a house arrest on a charge so ludicrous that any rational human would throw it out of court. But since it was manufactured by Chevron who has a oil-friendly judge in New York city, Donzinger continues to be unjustly restricted. The President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro is doing everything in his power to intimidate, invade and otherwise destroy the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous peoples who live there and have a guaranteed right to that land. There is a lot of fascinating evidence here and I encourage you to dive in. Steven Donzinger's story is here: https://theintercept.com/2020/01/29/chevron-ecuador-lawsuit-steven-donziger/His website and legal defense fund that could use your attention is here: https://www.donzigerdefense.com/ A great summary of just how obscene a crime Chevron has gotten away with so far to the detriment of both the rainforest and the lives of real people who live there and continue to suffer from their crimes of which they were convicted.https://www.makechevroncleanup.com/A long record of President Bolsonaro's violations exists. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/28/world/americas/brazil-deforestation-amazon-bolsonaro.htmlAnd much more is here for you on the only variety show for nature and adventure.
Bryna Campbell and Mike Murawski keep the joy of exploration at the center of what they do: providing useful, engaging and fun outdoor trail guides and activities for kids and families. They created Super Nature Adventures out of a need to keep their son less resistant and more engaged on their outings. And it really worked. Even more than that, Mike and Bryna have and undeniable passion for going outside. They talk about the outdoors in ways that make you want to get on the trail immediately. They eliminate any feelings of intimidation or nervousness and simply allow people to find their own paths. So while their materials are focused on kids ages 3-12 years old, their philosophy of engaging with the outdoors is for everyone.Supernatureadventures.com is a valuable resource for any parent or teacher looking to engage their children outdoors in creative, imaginative and empowering ways. Their affordable, hand-illustrated, downloadable pdf guides, activities and maps are sure to help you and your loved ones get outside more easily, more often and more confidently. In my conversation with Bryna and Mike we're all reminded of some basic truths about going outside. One, it's about the here and now. Two, children have some things to teach us about going outside. Three, stickers and snacks help!Mike and Bryna echo many of the same philosophies that I talk about and use on my nature hikes with both young and old. If we pay attention more to an animal or bird's behavior and worry less about getting its name right, we'll create a stronger connection to our environment. If we worry less about achieving a destination point and instead be more present to our immediate surroundings (from the micro to the grandiose) we'll have a more rewarding experience. Mike and Bryna and their son have trail tested these materials and I can't recommend them enough. They have also pivoted with the Covid-19 realities and created materials that can be used right now and in any location. Their Explore Your World and Create Your World materials are available, affordable and are a perfect addition to any home, school, homeschool or distance home school! We have a great conversation that covers Mt. Saint Helens,Rachel Carson, Yosemite, Portland, iNaturalist and much more. All of their resources can be found at http://www.supernatureadventures.comALSO in this 4th episode are all the amazing segments! The 3x3 Main Street Challenge takes us to Denver Colorado. Specifically Jake's Brew Bar on Main Street in Littleton, CO. Just a short distance away is the S. Platte River, Bowles Grove Park, Legault Mountain, Rocky Mountain National Park and Tin Cup, Colorado. In There's No Planet B we talk about the need to maintain biodiversity and the great work of the Center for Biological Diversity. In Art Meets Nature, DJ Shark takes us on a road trip with Paul Simon in Graceland. It's all there for you in this episode of Wonder Outside and it's all sponsored by the Nature Coach.
It's always fun when we bring on return guests. Especially when their family has doubled since you last saw them. And ESPECIALLY during a global pandemic. Emily Breeze and Montell Watson were our guests on Episode 3. THREE. This is episode 49. They've had three kids since then. Or is it 2? Wait, when was their first born again? Exactly. Who knows. When you have kids, your brain fries, and that was on display for the first couple minutes while we embarrassingly tried to figure out basic math. Interested in audio birth control? Well, we've got the episode for you! The beginning of Episode 3 is famously incredible. We won't spoil it for you, but it was in that moment we learned that Breeze don't play. Whether it be in the story she told that night, brushing off the haters on her massively-followed Instagram page or on this episode when she puts the HEAT on Montell for baby No. 4, you always know where she stands. Montell on the other hand is as cool as a cucumber. But absolutely not a push over. He's made it clear that while he's typically go-with-the-flow when it comes to life, he's definitively out on baby No. 4. (Editor's note: he's definitely going to lose that one.) Full disclosure: we're neighbors. The Watsons moved onto "the compound" late last year. We've grown closer with them and their kids since all of this madness started a couple of months ago. It's been amazing. But the last thing they probably wanted to do is record a podcast with us. "Oh, shall we hang with the Fehlings AGAIN, honey? We haven't seen them in, what, 7 minutes?" In all seriousness, though, it's all been an interesting experience to say the least. Doing life together on a compound is one thing, but quarantining together is another. Thank goodness they're not tired of us yet. "Breeze" and "'Tell" are as solid as it gets. They talk raising babies, trying to figure out TikTok, navigating a dual work-from-home life, and then, right as we're signing off, Page gets IN THERE with Breeze about the role she plays as not just a social media influencer, but as an influencer to our daughter as a strong woman, mom and all-around human being. It may have gotten a little dusty in the studio at that point. Check out Breeze (@emilybreeze) and 'Tell (@montell3) all over the socials. For past episodes of Date Night with Jake and Page please visit jakeandpage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Please comment, like and share your favorite episodes as well. Stay safe, everyone, and thanks for listening!

In "There's No Way I'll Ever Regret It," Sayaka gets her butt kicked by Kyoko, the new girl in town. In "This Just Can't Be Right," Homura appears to get through to her just a little bit. "Can You Face Your True Feelings?" sees Kyoko expressing and articulating to Sayaka why she feels how she does. And "I Was Stupid, So Stupid" shows Kyoko being there for Sayaka in her moment of need. Aside from this classic tale of the misunderstood bully, some really fucked up shit occurs in these four episodes. Par for the course in Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
