In this episode, we're digging deep — literally and figuratively — into the land management that powers our hunts at Whiskey Sloughs. From strategic slough creation along the Platte River to native grass and sunflower plots on our CRP ground, we break down the year-round work it takes to hold birds and build habitat that thrives. We also take a walk through our Upland CSA, where intentional habitat management creates wild-style experiences for pheasant, quail, and chukar hunters alike. Whether you're a landowner, a habitat nerd, or just someone who wants to know what goes into a world-class hunt — this one's for you.

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about our trip across the country to Pennsylvania to see our family. I completed my book signing in Cheyenne, Wyoming and we started our trip across the country to Pennsylvania! We had a couple of stops along the way, though. Our first stop was an unplanned stop at the Archway in Kearney, Nebraska. The Archway is a unique museum that literally extends over Interstate 80 to pay homage to all those who have traveled across its path throughout history. Since ancient times, the route along the Platte River in Nebraska, once called the Great Platte River Road, has served as a migratory pathway across the continent. From the era of the Oregon Trail to the present day, the Archway brings the history of the Great Platte River Road to life. Central to the Archway experience is its historical exhibit, which honors the American spirit of exploration. Utilizing life-sized figures and personal audio guides, the Archway recounts the tale of America's development. Visitors can walk alongside pioneers on the Oregon Trail, observe a Pony Express Station horse exchange, listen to Mark Twain's story of a cross-country stagecoach journey, witness the driving of the “Golden Spike” connecting the nation's railways, and learn about life on the Lincoln Highway at a traveler's campground. Located at Exit 275 on I-80, a key coast-to-coast travel route today, the Archway commemorates the journeys of all adventurers who have traveled the river's route – from those who contributed to our nation's development in the past to those who are shaping our future today. It was an awesome experience, and we're glad that we did it. After The Archway, we made our way to visit our friends, Jason and Sara Brelsfoard in Maroa, Illinois. We met Jason and Sara back in February when we stayed at the Galveston Island KOA. We immediately connected and became friends. We spent two nights with them, and even got to ride in a combine. After our visit with Jason and Sara, we were off to my final book signing and to visit with more friends that we had met in Galveston, Jeff and Jackie Powell, in Centerville, Ohio. We had told our family that we'd be getting back into Pennsylvania on October 8th, but we knew all along that September 26th would be our arrival date. We spent our first two days back popping in on our family and surprising them. It was quite fun, but also a little exhausting.

In 2019, major flooding altered the Platte River near its junction with Highway 75, creating a large sandbar and restricting the channel size to a third of what it had been previously. Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District general manager John Winkler says the sandbar makes communities like Louisville and Cedar Creek, which are upstream, more susceptible to additional flooding.

"Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids' author Janelle Molony shares her book and research into the first-hand witness accounts of the survivors of the Platte River Indian raids of 1864. Members of her family traveled with the Earps while other families who names became a part of history, like Ringo, Boone, Brown, all left vivid accounts of the deadly raids which until now history has pretty much overlooked. There some interesting side stories in this interview, including the story of John Brown's family, a handful of which were involved in his raids, and so were traveling under another identity, were being followed by angry Missourians who wanted to kill them for the Confederate cause. It was 1864, and Northern Plains Indians were not pleased with settlers migrating from east to west along the Oregon, Bozeman and Overland Trails. Thus began a series of attacks and robberies on unsuspecting emigrants winding their way along the Platte River. Shots rang out and arrows whizzed as miners, doctors, farmers, families, and war widows rallied their covered wagons together. As historian journalist Janelle Molony relates in her new book “Emigrant Tales of the Platte River Raids,” some of those involved had familiar names – Brown, Boone, Earp, Kelly, Larimer, Ringo, Rousseau and more. She joins Russell an Alan to share some of the eyewitness testimonies of nearly 70 survivors, presented in one accord for the first time in literary history. And western singer-songwriter Jim Jones shares his song “Rockin' Chair” from his new album “Storyteller – Tales from the West.”

Happy Spooky Wednesday, one and all! It may be summertime out in the real world, but here in Left of Skeptic Land it is spooky season all year long! First up this week, Kala tells us about The Death Ship of Platte River, also known as The Wyoming Death Ship. This omen of doom has been seen multiple times along the Platte River between Torrington and Alcova, and allegedly every one who has spotted it has had a loved one pass away the very same day. Is this really a ghost ship, or a method of clairvoyant dreaming? It leads to quite the debate. And Brittany talks about the historic Greystone Mansion and Garden in Beverly Hills, CA. This building had a rough, sketchy start when less than a year after it was built, two people died within its walls. Was it part of a giant government cover-up? Was it two lovers who couldn't handle keeping their feelings a secret any longer? Was it a jealous wife caught in a love triangle? We'll never know, and because we'll never know, it seems the ghosts will never rest. This now public park and famous location for movie and television filming is haunted with phantom gunshots, strange noises, and shadowy figures. And as a bonus, it's also a location for Gilmore Girls, so you really can't go wrong. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leftofskeptic/support

The resist-dye technique known as ikat involves wrapping individual threads in careful patterns, dyeing them, and then using the dyed threads as warp, weft, or both. With care and what Mary Zicafoose describes as a lot of fussing, the woven fabric displays a pre-planned design—geometric or figurative, crisp or feathery, multicolored or two-tone. This technique is time-consuming and labor-intensive, but the results are beautiful in ways unique to each of the textile traditions that practice it. Mary Zicafoose first encountered ikat as a child, when her favorite aunt brought her a souvenir scrap of the fabric and told her it contained magic. Even when you know the painstaking and nonmagical process that weavers use to create ikat fabrics, her aunt's comment rings true: there is something charmed about the patterns that emerge in ikat, jaspe, pochampally, and other resist-dye-weave fabrics. Mary made her way toward ikat tapestry through her studies in other visual arts. Despite initially being insulted when a college professor suggested she consider working in fibers, she eventually found her passion in weaving and dyeing. She taught herself to weave ikat through a pamphlet and gradually pushed the limits of the technique, creating more complex and intricate designs. In her studio practice, Mary creates stunning large-format weft-ikat tapestries, some requiring years of planning and weaving (and tens of thousands of knots). Beginning the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, she conceived a project in a new style: a huge landscape of the Sandhill Crane bird migration near her home on the Platte River in Nebraska. In addition to her studio practice, Mary also loves to teach weavers the fundamentals of ikat. Her teaching approach involves breaking down the process into manageable steps—some very different from standard weaving practice! Her first book, Ikat: The Essential Handbook to Weaving Resist-Dyed Cloth, was written for a broad audience of weavers, with the aim of teaching a technique and encouraging people to apply it to their own signature style of weaving. Focusing on warp ikat, the book presents a step-by-step approach to a technique that she learned through trial and error. She is currently working on a companion book to go deeper into many different types of projects and build on skill sets. Today we dive into the captivating world of Sandhill and Whooping Cranes with wildlife biologist Bethany Ostrom from the Crane Trust. These majestic birds have a rich history, with fossil records showing them to be some of the oldest modern birds. Today, they continue to amaze us by congregating in massive numbers along their ancient migration route through Nebraska. In this episode, Bethany helps us understand the unique phenomenon of crane migration, and why the Platte River in Nebraska is such an important stopover for over 1 million cranes each spring.Bethany also provides a broader perspective on Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes, helping us to understand how these birds live, from their diets, to their unique dancing displays. She also helps us understand why Sandhill Cranes are generally increasing in numbers despite massive changes to their environment. However, Whooping Cranes have not been as fortunate, with populations dropping to only 15 individuals at one point. Bethany helps us understand how this occurred, and how recent conservation efforts have helped to increase their populations. These magnificent birds are truly a wonder to behold, and we encourage you to seek them out if you have an opportunity. Sandhill Cranes can be found in nearly every state at various times of the year. You can find the Crane Trust on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as at their website.Check out the FULL SHOW NOTES for photos and more.Links From Today's ShowPeople and OrganizationsCrane TrustRowe SanctuaryBooks, Documentaries, and Other ThingsPBS Nature "Flight School" EpisodeThe Nature Makers documentaryThe following music was used for this media project:Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9616-spellboundLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist website: https://brianholtzmusic.com Support the show

A psychological thriller set against one of nature's most spectacular backdrops – the migration of Sandhill Cranes to the Platte River – the novel's thread of mystery unfurls from a near-fatal accident on a remote stretch of Nebraskan road. Twenty-seven-year-old Mark Schluter survives the crash, but not without a traumatic brain injury which renders his sister, Karin, an apparent imposter. Enter famous cognitive neurologist Gerald Weber, who diagnoses Mark with Capgras syndrome and thereby gives a name to a desperate confusion that might not just be all in Mark's head.
