We were thrilled to welcome back acclaimed psychological thriller author and Richard & Judy Bestseller, Lizzy Barber, to the show. Lizzy is the author of several gripping novels, including Be Mine, and has a knack for cutting right through the polished facade of the author life to reveal the messy, chaotic, and often hilarious reality. As The Writing Community Chat Show, recently ranked among the top 10 writing podcasts in the UK, we've interviewed over 360 authors, from NYT best-sellers to indie superstars. Few, however, have been as candid as Lizzy about the sheer struggle of creative output when life throws everything at you. This conversation is essential listening for anyone who feels they are running out of time, energy, or hope while chasing their writing dreams.1. The Real Cost of ‘The Slow Draft.'Lizzy shared that her current novel, her fifth, has been the slowest to write, a process she describes as being “on ice.” This wasn't due to a lack of ideas but due to life: the birth of her daughter, dealing with family loss, and major personal hardships. The interview kicked off with a major truth bomb about managing expectations. Lizzy, who is working on this novel while juggling motherhood and dealing with family issues, admitted she has learned to accept a 500-word-a-day target.“I have worked out that for me that has meant 500 words a day. And I'm comfortable with that. And some days I will write a thousand and think, ‘what a great day.' And then the next day I might write two.”She argues against the perceived hierarchy in the writing community that values speed and high word counts. While some authors happily “splurge 4,000 words a day,” Lizzy opts for quality, slow progress, where her 500 words are likely to be “500 really good words that won't get cut up or replaced.”This is a powerful reminder: the goal is the finished product, not the speed of the first draft.2. Navigating Publishing: Big Five vs. Indie.Lizzy has the unique experience of having worked with both ‘Big Five' publishing houses and an indie publisher (Dura). She offered a rare, side-by-side comparison of the two models:3. The Uncomfortable Question: Imposter Syndrome.Perhaps the most resonant part of the conversation for aspiring and established writers alike was Lizzy's raw honesty about self-doubt.When discussing the draft she just completed after two years, she was upfront about her inner turmoil: “There is a part of me that thinks that this might not actually work as a book and that I might junk it.”This is imposter syndrome at its highest level - the doubt that creeps in after hundreds of hours of work. For Lizzy, this feeling is exacerbated by an “uneven publishing experience” and the anxiety of never finding a constant publisher “home.”“The worst thought is this kind of awareness of never being published again—that you're kind of you're done... That's the kind of constant fear that you kind of live on the highwire of as an author.”Her advice for surviving this? Focus solely on the writing, because that is the only thing you can control. Don't chase trends, and don't let external noise or sales charts dictate your self-worth.4. The Author Brand: Be Yourself. (Even If You're ADHD)Lizzy, who recently started to explore the possibility that she has undiagnosed ADHD, spoke about how she manages her time and how her personality informs her public persona. She admits she is good at jumping into pockets of time but “can't write around the chaos.” She needs to compartmentalize her writing time, a vital lesson for any busy creative. On building an author brand, her advice is simple: Be authentic. If you are an introvert who hates reels and being on camera, don't force it, it won't feel fun or look genuine. But if you, like Lizzy, are comfortable debating, answering difficult questions, and being visible:“I love being on camera. I trained as an actress... I like the sound of my own voice. I don't mind being silly. I don't mind being filmed. I say [to my publisher] use me for that. I'm very comfortable to kind of debate and be asked hard questions.”Find your niche, whether it's through newsletters, blogs, or public appearances, and commit to it. But whatever you do, avoid the pressure to join the “5 a.m. writer's club” just because it sounds productive. Prioritize your sleep and your process.Watch the Full Interview.Lizzy's interview is full of crucial, honest advice for writers at every stage of their career. We cover everything from the psychological complexities of her thrillers to the magic of the Harrogate Crime Writers Festival.Watch the full episode below (or listen to the podcast audio):Connect with Lizzy Barber:* Instagram: @byLizzyBarber* Buy Her Books: Available on Amazon, the Dura website, and all good bookstores.Join our brand new community on our Stanstore! Navigating Leadership with Gratitude In this episode of the Visibility Factor podcast, host Sue Barber reflects on the importance of gratitude, especially during the Thanksgiving season. She discusses how gratitude can help shift mindsets from negative to positive, but also highlights the challenges it poses for those struggling with imposter syndrome. Drawing insights from Kim Meninger's Forbes article, Barber emphasizes the need for individuals to acknowledge their contributions to their successes rather than attributing them solely to external factors. The conversation also touches on the importance of effective communication in leadership and provides resources for personal growth and visibility.   Takeaways Thanksgiving evokes memories and traditions of family gatherings. Gratitude helps shift mindsets from negative to positive. Impostor syndrome can distort our perception of success. Acknowledging personal contributions is crucial for self-worth. Effective communication is key to leadership visibility. Recognizing the value of our work is essential. Celebrating achievements reinforces confidence. Resources are available to enhance leadership skills. Sharing successes helps others understand our impact. Gratitude should include personal accountability. On this episode of the HappyCast, we go in-depth with local Houstonian Katy Barber who just tackled the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) FKT. Located in Texas, and definitely NOT Galveston, this is the 4th longest beach in the WORLD and one of the most isolated places in the country, all tucked away on the largest unprotected barrier island in the world. This is a 65+ mile FKT that traverses the entire length of the beach, and no woman has ever attempted this feat before, and only two men have completed it. We do a deep dive with Katy and her coach and fellow guest, Chad Lasater (who will one day have his own episode as he is a treasure trove of accomplishments). We talk about the logistics, the difficulty of running on a beach, and the dynamics with crewing and dealing with the remote nature of the race. Further yet, this was double the distance Katy has previously ran, so we talk about establishing distance PR's in the process. We also share a few crew stories, as both Chad and Andrew were present for the FKT. Katy's crew also consisted of Kevin Christensen, Regina Massingill, Jaimie (kind of like Cher or Bono), Laura Lundell, and John Kilburn. Join us as we tackle one of the more primitive, remote, and unconventional recaps yet - 65+ miles on nothing but sand! And congratulations on setting the FKT, Katy! In this episode of Moolala: Money Made Simple, Bruce dedicates a full hour to personal finance legend David Chilton, author of The Wealthy Barber. Nearly four decades and millions of copies later, Chilton has fully updated his Canadian classic for a new generation facing soaring housing costs, ubiquitous credit and constant social-media-fueled temptation. He shares the story behind the original book, why he chose a barbershop narrative, how he self-published before it was cool, and what really happened when Canada Trust and Costco helped turn The Wealthy Barber into a phenomenon. Bruce and David also talk about family, travel, homeschooling, and what it was like for his kids to grow up with “the Wealthy Barber guy” as their dad. Then, they dig into the money lessons that still matter most: paying yourself first, crushing high-interest debt, using spending summaries to spot the leaks, and why car costs are quietly wrecking so many budgets. David explains how small daily changes can add up to fully funding a TFSA, why side hustles can be a game-changer, and how high-fee products still undermine long-term returns. He also looks ahead to the future of money, from AI and employment to open banking, and shares the one change he wishes every Canadian would see: practical, engaging financial education for teens that actually sticks. Professional hockey was a different game in the mid 70's that it is today. Whether it's better or more entertaining is up for debate, but what is not up for debate is back then, there was a level of brutality that the sport fully allowed if not encouraged. Fighting was as part of the game as goals and saves, checks and assists. Bobby Clark was the 2nd leading scorer in the NHL's 1975-76 season with 119 points for the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Flyers. But he had help and he had protection. The Broad Street Bullies as the Flyers were affectionately known in Philadelphia would come into an opposing arena, score goals, beat you up, and leave town with a smile on their face. And they used that recipe to hoist the Cup in 1974 and 1975. And nobody embodied that persona more than Dave ‘The Hammer' Schultz. In 1974 he set a record for penalty minutes in one season with 472, a tally that 50 years later still stands. The Hammer was known to drop the gloves at the drop of a hat… but he had a job to do and he did it well… Protect Captain Clark and high scoring forwards Bill Barber, Reggie Leach, and Rick "The Hawk" MacLeish. This helped lead Philly to a record of 51-13-16 in '75-76 and a 3rd straight appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. But after thrilling wins over Boston in '74 and Buffalo in '75, the Flyers were swept aside by the Canadiens in '76 ending their run as the league's top team. Still, the team was a force on the ice and with a healthy Bernie Parent back in the nets after the disappointing loss to Montreal, the Flyers were still major contenders for the Cup With Clark, Barber and Dave Schultz going into the 1976 season. But on September 29, 1976, a week before the start of the season, The Hammer was sent to Los Angeles for two draft picks. And just like that, the Broad Street Bullies were no more. The end of an era and for Schultz, the beginning of the end of his career. This Flyer was now a King, then a Penguin and finally a Sabre before retiring following the 1980 season. His heart was broken when he left Philly and he and the Flyers were never the same without each other. Philadelphia hasn't won a Stanley Cup since. Now, 50 years later, Dave has written a book called ‘Hammered': The Fight of my Life where Schultz talks openly about his lifelong battle with alcohol and how getting sober in his 70's is the biggest win of his life. He tells us how being sent away to L.A. —“not traded”— was a blow to him that he never fully accepted and how he will always be a Flyer. He recollects how he'd be admonished for fighting by NHL President Clarence Campbell only to never hear from him and that the league said one thing publicly about players fighting and yet did nothing to stop it. His job was to fight, and stand up for his teammates and protect them at all costs… and he did it very well. It's Hammer time on the Past Our Prime podcast. A special edition of Chatter that Matters. Thirty-five years ago, David Chilton and his record-shattering best-seller, The Wealthy Barber, revolutionized Canadians' approach to money. Its profound impact was not just on the nation, but also on me. I cleared my credit card debts, paid myself first, and found peace of mind.   I had the chance to sit with David to talk about the complete remake of his classic. We delve into why David returned to the barbershop, how he rewrote every lesson for a generation facing heavier financial pressures, and why the simplest habits still create the strongest foundations.  We also discuss spending in the age of social media and tap-to-get, the affordability crisis surrounding home ownership, and why Wills and Estate Planning matter.   David Chilton, with his humility, honesty, and unwavering commitment, remains a beacon of support for Canadians.  Encountering someone who has reshaped a nation's financial mindset is rare, but witnessing them do it twice is even rarer. So grab a seat on the Barber's Chair, and listen to my interview with David Chilton.   To buy David's  book: https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/the-wealthy-barber-the-fully-updated-all-time-canadian-classic/9781068975004.html To learn more about Wills and Estate Planning: https://www.rbcwealthmanagement.com/en-ca/royal-trust

At last… our pod is complete again.” Join Ian, Liam & Megs (she always goes last), along with Friend of the Podcasters: Beadle Steve, for our 304th episode as we sharpen our razors, roll out the pie dough, and dive into the gothic, gory glory of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). This week, we're not just talking Burton's blood-soaked macabre attempt at a masterpiece — we're also sharing our collective memories from our very own recent production of Sweeney Todd! Expect behind-the-scenes stories, backstage laughs, and maybe a few stories about trap doors and jettisons of blood This week we discuss: How Tim Burton's adaptation balances musical theatre grandeur with cinematic horror — and where it falls short. Johnny Depp's take on the title role: tortured genius or just Burton doing Burton again? Helena Bonham Carter's Mrs. Lovett — delightful, deranged, and determined to make the worst pies in London. How Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall manage to be both repulsive and magnetic - but can they sing?  Who do we think could've done it better? The use of colour, lighting, and sound — and why did the crew need so many garbage bags? How Sweeney Todd manages to turn tragedy into operatic spectacle without losing its emotional sting. We discuss at great length a couple of elements that one of us just couldn't overlook We share our favourite moments (and biggest mishaps) from our own stage production — from what it's like to be reviewed ourselves to unexpected laughter in the wrong places and if you can imagine it - Ian flexing in the spotlight What it's like performing Sondheim's music live — the challenge, the rhythm, and the glorious chaos. Beadle Steve joins us to talk about his experience, his favourite scenes, and whether he's still hearing “Ding Dong!” in his sleep... and what happened to the ensemble anyway? And finally, whether Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is the Best Film Ever — or just the bloodiest musical we've ever loved. What really happens during menopause—and how can faith, science, and self-care come together to help us age with strength and grace? In this powerful conversation, Candace and Dr. Tabatha Barber dive deep into hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the truth behind the 2002 study that scared women away from hormones, and how lifestyle choices like fasting, stress management, and nutrition can restore balance.  They tackle the myths of “self-love,” the pressure to look perfect, and the importance of caring for your body as a spiritual act of stewardship. From estrogen patches to infrared saunas, fasting to functional medicine, this is a must-listen for women of every age who want to understand their health—and take one step closer to Jesus with confidence and courage.
