On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page" Michelle joins your hosts to discuss her THIRD BOOK, "8 Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success." They discuss the reframing of the word, "failure," which middle school archetype each person was in middle school (and how to correctly pronounce the word, "archetype"), and Michelle calls Jake out on thinking he was dating Kate Hudson (spoiler-alert: he wasn't). If you pay even the slightest bit of attention to the news in Charlotte then you already know Joe Bruno. Joe is one of Charlotte's most well-known and well-respected journalists. Liz Egan Bruno (current audio/video producer... but we're not convinced her goal of being on SNL is yet out of reach) is quite possibly the only human who can keep up with him. Together the Brunos are the first Date Night guests to (almost) beat Jake and Page in a tall-off. *cumulative gasp* The two couples discuss how Joe, Liz and Page all met at Charlotte's Fox 46... and how Page is the only one between her and Liz who liked Joe at first. They also discuss their other Charlotte media friendship crushes... and then proceed to forget key names of the people with whom they all want to be friends. Please help us welcome Jenn and Miles Andrews to Date Night! They showed up with cans of Middle James Brewing's Hops on One Leg IPA, which was a great start, but more on that later... Jenn and Miles came HIGHLY recommended as guests. We polled our social media and got several requests to have them on. This was followed by Jenn introducing herself to Jake at a Panthers game and passing along some swag for her foundation. Once we heard her story, we had to have them on. Some back story: Jenn was getting a pedicure in 2013 when she was pregnant with her first child. During that pedicure, the nail tech discovered a pea-sized nodule on top of her right foot. The nodule eventually grew to a golf ball size mass. After several years of ups, downs and seeking multiple opinions, amputation was the only option to give her the best chance at a cancer-free life. On March 7, 2018, Jenn did a Facebook live video requesting friends and family to move for her and those who physically can't on her surgery date. This request unknowingly became a movement. On March 12, 2018, Jenn became cancer free, and the social media world flooded with #moveforjenn and #movebecauseyoucan posts globally. People all over the world were sharing posts with all forms of exercise in honor of Jenn and her request. This movement led her to realize that being an amputee, and someone who wanted to remain active, would be difficult without ample means of funding. The Move for Jenn Foundation was born from this moment. Fundraisers, 5Ks and IPA collaborations followed. Jenn and Miles now tell their story from a much larger - and growing - platform everyday. We were lucky to have them on the pod. Learn more about the foundation at moveforjenn.org and follow Jenn at @moveforjenn and @_jennandrews. Miles is no slouch at social media himself; he can be found on Instagram and TikTok at @j.miles.a. Thanks for listening! For past episodes visit jakeandpage.com.
"Looners," "Chambongs," and "Bad Bunny." Three new things your hosts learned about on this episode of Date Night! Tiffany and Ciro Marino are the duo behind "Confetti Castle," the balloon company that has BLOWN UP over the past few years. Sorry. We had to. Jake and Page talk with them about how they met on Tinder, blended their beautiful families, and moved to Charlotte for Ciro's job(s) in the restaurant industry... before he eventually left to join his wife as a jack of all balloon trades. The night started off with a shot of the bubbly, included life-changing tips on balloon fetishes, and how not to burn your garlic (you can decide which of those is the most life-changing), it and ended with Tiffany and Ciro leaving for a party that STARTED at 10 p.m. On a Thursday. Jake and Page were very impressed by both that, and the rest of what this rockstar couple brought to the table. Follow Confetti Castle on the 'gram @confetticastle ... or just look in the back/foreground of any picture you take anywhere these days. That's them. The colorful beauties (the balloons and the people behind the balloons) making everyone's day a little better and a lot more fun! Thanks for listening! OH my goodness. This episode. This couple. Get REEDy for an OHmazing one, you guys. OK. Enough with the puns. But for real... buckle up. On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," your hosts sit down (After they danced. Yes... there's a TikTok to go along with this one. You're welcome.) with media mogul Ohavia Phillips and "Inspire the Fire" Founder, Dennis Reed. The two have MANY more titles and jobs and accolades to their names, but frankly it would take up half the internet to list them all. Let's just say their list of collaborators include names like Fantasia, Stacy Abrams, and OPRAH WINFREY. Yes, your hosts were impressed too. Listen in as the two couples discuss how creatives work, how creatives play, and how Page awkwardly puts yet another couple on the spot about when they're gonna make it official. They also discuss what "official" even means, old and new school ways of thought around relationships in general, all while experiencing first-hand with each other the beauty of vulnerability. This episode is equal parts laughs and love, and if you know Dennis and Ohavia, they wouldn't have it any other way! You can follow Ohavia on Instagram at @ohaviaphillips and @theohverse, and listen to her new podcast "Beautiful People with Ohavia Phillips" wherever you listen to podcasts. You know the brand Mignonne Gavigan for the stunning jewelry and equally stunning model who's the face of the brand. But did you know that stunning face belongs to the founder herself? On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," Page, Jake and "Maggie," as her friends call her (or, "Me-YONE" if you're Jake, trying [poorly] to pronounce her full first name in French) sit down to talk about Maggie's Charlotte roots that took her from Country Day to the North Carolina School of the Arts, UGA, UNC-Chapel Hill, and then all over the literal actual world. Maggie schools Page and Jake on the bucket hat trend, why crafting is the best thing to do in a basement (although high schoolers nationwide may beg to differ), and how cutting up her dad's old jeans lead to an impromptu fashion statement necklace, and now to a jewelry empire that is growing by the MINUTE. Maggie is working to help make the fashion industry beautiful both inside and out... putting kindness culture first in running her business and we are HERE FOR IT. You can find the beautiful Mignonne Gavigan lines at boutiques and department stores all over the world... and online at mignonnegavigan.com and @mignonnegavigan.
On the latest episode of Page and Jake's Takes, your hosts tackle what happens when your kids choose sports that don't involve, well, tackling. In the last year, Jake and Page's kids have taken on swimming, lacrosse, field hockey and wrestling. Four sports Jake and Page NEVER played, even though Page essentially refers to herself as a professional sports EXPERT several times throughout the episode..... On this most casual, but cool episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," your hosts learn just how casual they are, and how cool their guests are. Megan Orrell, Owner and Founder of Charlotte fashion staple, Boem (pronounced like, "poem" with a "b") and gym owner/software development consultant/general bad-ass entrepreneur Lance Breeden, aka "Montell's friend" in Jake's phone, sat down in the bonus room to talk about how they've been happily unmarried for almost 15 years, the intentional things they do to keep their relationship strong after having learned the hard way, and what "beard-fishing" is. Follow Megan on Instagram @missorrell and @shopboem or www.shopboem.com. If you want more of Lance you may just have to hit up a Chipotle or become an Uber driver who wants to chat. Cam is back, baby!! And that means Bank of America Stadium is about to be loud and lots of fun this Sunday when the Carolina Panthers take on Washington for his first home game back this season. You know Panthers DJ Vinny Esposito is gonna make sure of that. And so will his wife Diane, aka, "Mama D," as she's known to their three sons, two grandsons, and the fleet of DJs the Espositos employ, but also think of as extended family. On this episode of Date Night with Jake and Page, get to know the Espositos all the way back to Vinny's hair band days, when he had to use a cursing jar to remind himself to watch his mouth around the cute blonde who "didn't even like his name" when they first met. Vinny and Diane share their best boundaries advice for when you work and live together, they show Jake and Page why they're far better parents than the Fehlings, and the two couples decide Jake is the only one any of them would ever hire as an assistant. You'll hear how Vinny decided to take the Panthers gig based on an impatient thumbs-up from Diane just to get him off the phone to help with kids at Disney, plenty of inside scoop on what it's like to work the production side of an NFL game, and why being a DJ can look sketchy to neighbors when The Sopranos is the hottest thing on TV. Thought you might miss this episode of Date Night? Fuggetaboutit! Follow Vinny (@vinnysplit), Diane (@dianesplit) and Split Second Sound (@splitsecondsound) on social. And shout out to our first-ever podcast sponsors, Paviol Dermatology (@paviolderm)! Jake is a fan of the "bro glow" and Page, well, Page has had pretty much every treatment there. SHE makes everyone else beautiful in our effort to get on even half of her level. HE "works in banking..." when he's not doubling as a male fashion model on her blog. On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page" John and Lindsey Regan Thorne visit the bonus room to talk about when "Alive at 5" was classy, how Lindsey's plan to "Lose a guy in 10 days" backfired (in the best of ways), and how Jake is a bad dater (but it worked out anyway). The two couples decide that as a foursome they could make up one decent set of parents (Regans do potty-training. Fehlings are on sleep duty. Currently accepting applications for all in-between and after phases.), John and Jake discuss using mixed drinks to teach homeschool fractions, and Page and Lindsey put their math (in)abilities on full display throughout the episode. Things takes a "serious" turn when the Thorne's break down how they started a new business and the deciding factors that go into what to (and what not to) share on social media... and then promptly turn back into middle school territory when Lindsey shouts out "Tata Harper," Page can't stop talking about "eye sacks," and the boys get the giggles about it all. Follow Lindsey on her blog https://www.lindseyreganthorne.com/ and on instagram @lindseyreganthorne. HE's a former safety and current color commentator for the Carolina Panthers, and don't you dare call him your "friend" until he really is. SHE's a former Ohio State soccer player and just about the sweetest human alive. On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," Kurt and Laura Coleman join your hosts in the bonus room studio for a day-date brought to you by 1800 watermelon margaritas. Apologies for all the ice tinkling heard throughout, and "You're welcome," to Laura's sister who it sounds like might have had more than her fair share of those as a third wheel on Kurt and Laura's first date.* Throughout this episode Kurt talked openly about the grudges he's held against teams that fired him, how he's overcome these grudges, what it's been like calling games for the Panthers, how Andy Reid's wife Tammy essentially proposed to Laura, and his almost troubling obsession with pancakes. We get it Kurt, you like IHOP. And thank you... we're now starving. Laura, meanwhile, continues her reign as one of the nicest humans alive... unless you sit next to her (or her dad, without knowing it) at one of their kids' sporting events and comment on the fairness of her child beating the pants off yours. Then... LOOK OUT. Mama Coleman is coming for you. *snaps fingers two times in the air* The two couples talked mental health, child labor laws in tourism-dependent countries, and questionable mattress stains. Yeah, we went there. Things begin with a discussion of "getting it in," and end with a Vladimir Guerrero Catchphrase clue that will blow away your eardrums. We're pretty sure you'll enjoy all of that and everything in-between. Catch more Kurt this football season on the radio and as a coach at Charlotte Latin, and you'll find Laura somewhere in Charlotte carting around the four Coleman minis to practices on practices on games on practices. Don't believe us? They're @k4cole20 and @mrscoleman29 on Insta if you want to stalk them there. Please snap a screen grab while you listen, tag us, and share! Visit jakeandpage.com for past episodes. You sound like fun.
On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," your hosts talk with one of Page's favorite "Good Day" guests from back in the day - and Chuck Roads' arch-nemesis - Dr. Scott Paviol of Paviol Dermatology. Dr. P explains why we have sick babies to thank for Botox, Coco Chanel to blame for skin cancer, and alcohol-fueled parties to look to for why dermatologists sometimes become "junk checkers for people who sun their under-regions." Yeah. Over the course of their time together, Jake learns that his face would make for a great "before and after" case, Page outs every friend she's ever known with a skin condition (including herself), and Dr. P gives his "Big 4 drug store must-haves" for skin care. He also introduces Page to her new favorite saying, "Be high maintenance so you can be low maintenance." Find out more about Dr. Paviol on his website pavioldermatology.com or connect on Instagram at @dr.paviol! On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page," we reunite with one of our early Raleigh friendship crushes, Laurie Ruettimann. Laurie is a self-described reformed HR professional who was just not right for HR. She talked with us about her new book, "Betting On You: How to Put Yourself First and (Finally) Take Control of Your Career," and graciously accepted Page's stalker-level post-it markings and interrogation about everything inside. The three discuss how Laurie's own journey of being fed-up at work led to lap-band surgery in Mexico and quitting her day job to bet on her own self... but why she doesn't necessarily think you should do the same thing. Yet. She answers Jake's questions about what this means if you're the boss trying to keep people happy at work so that they don't want to leave, and addresses how the book took on new meaning in the midst of pandemic job changes for so many. Both the book and Laurie are the perfect dose of practical and punk rock. Speaking of... you can hear more from her on her podcast, "Punk Rock HR," her website laurieruettimann.com, and on Twitter and IG @lruettiman. On the latest episode of Date Night, Jake and Page sit down with Elizabeth King (@sleepbabyconsulting) and Dr. Heather Graham (@heather_graham_md). Elizabeth is the CEO of Sleep Baby Consulting in Charlotte, NC. She works with families to teach their babies and toddlers how to sleep well so that the entire family can get the rest they need. Heather, meanwhile, has transitioned from delivering babies as a part of Premier Gynecology & Wellness to running Connected - Infertfility Monitoring where she focuses on taking care of women prior to pregnancy, postpartum and for the rest of their lives. We ask Elizabeth what sleep training methods are all the rage right now, what principles stand the test of time, the mistakes people make, and much more. She and Heather talk about how they tag team to help women not just survive the massive transition that is the 4th trimester and postpartum, but to THRIVE during that period as well. We discuss perinatal mental health, how important it is for women to get the help they need directly from the person that who knows them the best - their OBGYN - and most importantly stomping out the stigma around/make women aware of how common mood disorders can be before during and after pregnancy. Welcome back to another episode of Date Night with Jake and Page... where we only interview guests with hair that makes Jake jealous, apparently. Meet LauRen Merola and Dallas Strager! LauRen is one-third of "The MRL Show," one of Charlotte's top morning radio shows. She also blogs about parenting, fashion and more at @allofthefwords, and she co-hosts the "Mommyhood 2 Menopause" podcast. Dallas? Well, Dallas has amazing silver hair. LauRen and Dallas met in Miami while both working for the Miami Dolphins. LauRen danced. Dallas didn't. It was a match made in heaven. A few job changes and one move to India for LauRen later, the two relocated to the Queen City and haven't looked back. OK, maybe they look back at their fun, pre-kid life in Miami just a little. This episode has everything - parenting words of wisdom, relationship advice, cool backstories and did we mention LauRen took a job in India for a few months?! We ended up going for more than an hour and honestly could have gone another three of four. Buckle up. This is a good one. Politicians. They’re just like us! Right. Except… in Jeff Jackson’s case, it’s true! Meet Jeff and Marisa Jackson. Jeff is a North Carolina State Senator, representing Mecklenburg County, who recently launched a campaign for a 2022 U.S. Senate seat. Marisa is his wife, slash campaign manager in a pinch, slash marketer, slash do-everything mom. The parents of three are disarmingly unassuming. They agreed to jump on the Date Night pod at… 1:00 p.m. on a Saturday, immediately on the heels of their two-year-old going down for a nap. They planned a date around nap time. And if that ain’t the most “parents of young kids” thing ever, we don’t know what is. After meeting Marisa on Match.com – the two of them barely got through the app's free trial period before Jeff put a ring on it six months later! - Jeff was thrust into politics in 2014 amidst the infamous Charlotte mayoral drama from that year. Over the last six years he's become a household name in the Queen City, running a campaign built on 100% positivity and recently being named a 2020 Charlottean of the Year by Charlotte Magazine. A communications and marketing junkie by trade, Marisa has been thrust into the spotlight after bringing Jeff’s successful 2020 re-election campaign across the finish line when he was called into National Guard duty before election day. She then helped co-star (and wrangle kids who DID NOT want to participate, we learned) in Jeff’s viral 2022 announcement video. Was this a one-and-done stint as a campaign manager? Marisa said she's leaving the door open for reprising the role in 2022. Finally, when asked about their favorite date nights or spots to eat in Charlotte, the couple paused and said… axe throwing and Chipotle. Told you, just like us! Give Jeff (@jeffjacksonnc) and Marisa (@marisajacksonnc) a follow on social media! Especially Marisa, who promises all new followers that she will be posting more.
We finally finished our pregnancy book! "Holy Crap, We're Pregnant" only took us 10 years and a global pandemic to finish, but we got it across the finish line. You could say it was a... labor of love. *crowd groans* In this episode you'll hear us set things up with a brief intro, then we play the Prologue portion of our upcoming audiobook. Recording the audio version has been THE most fun. Reading it aloud to each other has jogged our memories; we bring up some old stories and jokes that weren't included in the printed book! Speaking of which, the paperback and e-book are out now at holycrapbooks.com, as well as some killer pregnancy gear. Check it out! Finally, the book summary from our back cover is below. Thanks for listening. Enjoy! -- Join Jake and Page Fehling as they hold your hand—but not your leg, that’s your job, dads—through your pregnancy journey. Jake and Page each write their own accounts of major pregnancy milestones, then react to the other’s recollections. Holy Crap, Let’s Go To Therapy was a close runner-up for the title. Jake and Page may be three-time parents, but they’re first-time authors. So they’re keeping their fingers crossed that you like their book. But not their legs... because clearly that hasn’t worked for them in the past.
An escape from the communist regime in Romania, the son of a cop arrested by his dad's colleagues, and parties at the Playboy mansion while living in Melrose Place. Plotlines for your latest Netflix binge? Oh, no. Just some of the stories you'll hear on this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page." This time we sat down with the Doctors Temple - aka Ana-Maria and John - the Hollywood-caliber medical duo who've joined forces to bring you "The Rule of 5: A Parent's Guide to Raising Healthy Kids in an Unhealthy World." Their teens voluntarily don't eat Chick-fil-A with friends. So they must be on to something... Ana-Maria (@dranamariatemple) says her mission is to change kids' and families' lives through clinical work and education. John is an orthopedic surgeon slash Docs Temple Marketing Guru. Jake could have picked his brain about how he helps promote Ana-Maria's growing business for the entire hour. Oh, and we bring back a (socially distanced) wrap-up game. Listen in uncomfortably while we awkwardly play Heads Up. We should have quit while we were ahead. Finally, we talk about our book in the intro - yes, it's finally published! "Holy Crap, We're Pregnant" is a she said/he said take on pregnancy. It's lighthearted and non-technical to say the least. Are you surprised? A full podcast on the why behind the podcast is coming soon, as is the audio book! SHE'LL inspire you to decorate your house to within an inch of its life. HE'LL crack your back... while cracking you up. On this episode of the Date Night with Jake and Page podcast, we talk with Ariene and Daren Bethea. Ariene (@dressmyroom) owns an eclectic furniture and home goods boutique, and has recently been featured in Essence, House Beautiful, Arch Digest, and Elle Decor. Daren (@inhomechiropractic) is a former college football player turned chiropractor whose practice shares a wall with Ariene's shop. It's pretty cute. So are they. By the end of the podcast Page had professed her design love for Ariene an awkward number of times, and Daren had invited Jake on a husband's playdate. Suffice it to say things went well. Listen in to hear for yourself... For past episodes of Date Night with Jake and Page please visit jakeandpage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. This one was a bit of a Date Night reunion. We first met Vani Hari more than a decade ago when she was just starting to build her Food Babe empire. She was young and hungry. We had kids who were also both of those things... and we were feeding them crap. Vani came in with a cheese grater and cauliflower "pasta" to save the day. (A quick run through her social media and YouTube will bring up the horror show.) Fast forward 10 years and Vani has a kid of her own, another one on the way, several books and successful businesses, and still a KEEN eye on the Fehlings' pantry. On this episode we sit down with "The Food Babe" to discuss everything from her advocacy work against major food corporations, to starting a business six weeks after giving birth, to why beaver butt is so delicious. You didn't think we'd forget to give you a full recap of how Whole30 was, did you? C'mon! Come for the recap, stay for Page's horrifying story of how, a week after completing Whole30, her body finally got around to rejecting the previous seven days of falling off the wagon. It's an all-timer that involves Roto-Rooter, a gas station and a 63-year-old woman. Crying just typing this. Look, our results were awesome. We both lost 10+ pounds. But MAN was it tough. Even despite surprisingly good food most of the time, we often found ourselves miserable. We missed the social aspect of having a drink with dinner, and that's even during COVID-times when we were primarily at home. Well.. that, and... CHESSE. AND BREAD. AND DESSERTS... It was an... interesting experience that neither of us are dying to do again. We actually get close to committing to it in January on the podcast, but then we quickly have PTSD and backtrack. Either way, I think we're both a little surprised we pulled it off, and happy that we did. If you need advice or to be talked off the ledge, don't hesitate to reach out. We'd love to hear your success (or horror) stories as well! For past episodes of Date Night with Jake and Page please visit jakeandpage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. When you host a podcast called Date Night, and you try to round up two EARLY morning broadcasters on a school night, you either better bring the coffee, or a healthy dose of energy. Fortunately we had plenty of the latter with Power 98's Ms. Jessica and "The Guy" joining the pod! Ms. Jessica, aka The Girl Next Door, is one of the hosts of the No Limit Larry and the Morning Maddhouse radio show in Charlotte, while The Guy is a school counselor for CMS. And yes, before we get too far we should probably address this whole - The Guy - thing. He's Jessica's long-time +1. And his name is pretty much the only thing off-limits on her show. But we learn his name almost immediately once we started recording. And if that isn't enough incentive to listen, we don't know what is! Jessica and Page have gotten to know each other through a segment on Good Day Charlotte where she delivers a healthy dose of entertainment gossip, affectionately referred to as #noseyneighbornews. Recently, much of the topics of discussion on their respective shows have turned to racial injustice, civil unrest and everything else the world is juggling right now. And just when you think they have a tough job, talking about these topics live on the air each day, scroll up and re-read The Guy's resume. Yeah. He tackles these topics everyday with young students, who you know are already dealing with PLENTY. Phew. We discuss these topics and more, including the fact that Ms. Jessica is the "June" of her family, having two older brothers. Check out Jessica at @heymsjessica and The Guy wherever people are doing the Lord's work. We're doing Whole30. We mean we're going on a diet. We mean we want to try to eliminate some foods from our diet. We mean Jake is going on a beard cleanse. Whatever you want to call it, we're doing it: Whole30. We've done minimal research. Page forgot to meal prep for work on Day 1. Jake plans to eat only chicken. We're off to an amazing start. Why are we doing it? Not really sure. We both know we could be making better dietary decisions, though, and a change has been a long time coming. Do we hope to lose weight and feel better? Of course. But long term if it helps us start to take baby steps toward healthier choices more consistently, well, that's probably the biggest win of them all. Can Jake survive 30 days with no IPAs? Can Page stand not having Rombauer and pretzel chips? Will they both be able to avoid charcuterie for a month!?!? We. Shall. See. Who else has given Whole30 a try? Any tips? Hacks? Crockpot recipes??? For past episodes of Date Night with Jake and Page please visit jakeandpage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Please comment, like and share your favorite episodes as well. It's time to head "back" to "school" on Monday... but this year, when home was the classroom, then summer camp, and now the classroom again, did we ever really leave? And what are we heading "back" to, anyway? 2020 has been a challenge, you guys. And if you're a parent of young children, school has been one of the toughest parts. On this episode of "Date Night with Jake and Page" we talk with Shannon and Andrew ("Drew") Houlihan. Drew's the Superintendent of Union County Public Schools. That would be our county. That's right, we cornered our Superintendent and dragged him onto the podcast. Meanwhile, Shannon's a better person than all of us combined. We talked about all the things you'd expect us to talk about when your family includes a superintendent of a school system, two kids who are in said school system and a mom who does charity work for both her paid gig AND her volunteer life. Quarantine home life. Quarantine school life. Making the tough decisions on how to merge the two, and how NO ONE feels prepared for what's being asked of them this year. We also learned that Drew has MAD game (Shannon fell for him within a week after he kicked it to her at a friend's wedding) and that they're onto you kids who call him "Andy" on Twitter when asking for snow days (although secretly we think they kinda find it funny... as long as you're still turning in your homework and not stealing lunch money from the little kids). We hope you'll listen and enjoy. And as with all of our guests, we hope this episode allows you to see the human beings behind the titles. For past episodes of Date Night with Jake and Page please visit jakeandpage.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Please comment, like and share your favorite episodes as well. Good luck to everyone heading back to school!
If you live in Charlotte, you just read the headline to this podcast and IMMEDIATELY got hungry. That's right, The Batchmaker is in the building! We were thrilled to welcome Cris and Pablo Agurcia to the podcast for this episode. We've been trying to get Cris - aka The Batchmaker - on for months, but she can barely come up for air with how popular her business has become. But first, a bit of the back story... Cris and Pablo are high school sweethearts from Honduras, which, upon her finding out, nearly sent Page into a lather. She - fun fact - spent two years there immediately following college for Peace Corps. They moved to the states, got married, Pablo found an amazing job, and Cris launched the uber-successful Batchmaker. Oh, if it was only that easy. We learned more about immigration than we did desserts in this episode! Cris and Pablo shared their amazing story, which included choosing to move to Charlotte, because...why not? Truly, they knew no one here. Knew nothing about the city, and yet here they are. Incredible. Cris' humility is off the charts. Her storefront has been open six months, and she literally sells out of her sweets every week. She still doesn't think it's real. Pablo's her biggest fan. They got two amazing kids. They're about as cute as it gets. Check out Cris at @thebatchmaker and Pablo, a local Creative Director, at @pagurcia. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Page and Jake's Takes are back! And we're comin' in HOT off a beach trip for the ages. This episode is about "The Sweet Spot." That glorious moment when your kids are old enough to fend for themselves. When you can go to the beach and realize seven days later that you have no idea what any of your children had for lunch last week. When your kids say, "Don't worry, Mom and Dad, we'll brush our teeth and put ourselves to bed." All right, maybe that's getting a bit greedy. We just went to the Outer Banks for a week and had pure, unadulterated, genuine FUN. We - GASP! - enjoyed spending time with our kids. We may actually be figuring this parenting thing out after all. Parents with multiple kids in diapers, drowning in baby wipes and exhaustion, hang in there. Your time is coming. You'll be able to pack a book for a beach trip again soon. It only took us *checks notes* 11 years to get there. Sigh. Welp. There's always margaritas. First of all, Jake does know what a bustle is. He is very smart, after all (p.s. this is Jake). For this episode we step into the realm of quarantined Zoom calls, bringing on Ryan and Samie Roberts, co-founders of Bustld. Ryan and Samie's company is based in Charlotte, and they serve brides and grooms in the southeast by bridging the gap between them and wedding vendors. Their company is surviving this madness, but the same can't be said for many of their clients' planned weddings. We talk shop for a bit - Bustld is a fun husband-wife Queen City small business story - but we get in there about what they're seeing now with COVID-induced cancellations, postponements and reschedulings. Jake just wanted to talk Corona Bridezillas. Ryan and Samie offer advice for brides/grooms to-be during and after quarantine, and much more. Check out Ryan and Samie at @bustld. It's always fun when we bring on return guests. Especially when their family has doubled since you last saw them. And ESPECIALLY during a global pandemic. Emily Breeze and Montell Watson were our guests on Episode 3. THREE. This is episode 49. They've had three kids since then. Or is it 2? Wait, when was their first born again? Exactly. Who knows. When you have kids, your brain fries, and that was on display for the first couple minutes while we embarrassingly tried to figure out basic math. Interested in audio birth control? Well, we've got the episode for you! The beginning of Episode 3 is famously incredible. We won't spoil it for you, but it was in that moment we learned that Breeze don't play. Whether it be in the story she told that night, brushing off the haters on her massively-followed Instagram page or on this episode when she puts the HEAT on Montell for baby No. 4, you always know where she stands. Montell on the other hand is as cool as a cucumber. But absolutely not a push over. He's made it clear that while he's typically go-with-the-flow when it comes to life, he's definitively out on baby No. 4. (Editor's note: he's definitely going to lose that one.) Full disclosure: we're neighbors. The Watsons moved onto "the compound" late last year. We've grown closer with them and their kids since all of this madness started a couple of months ago. It's been amazing. But the last thing they probably wanted to do is record a podcast with us. "Oh, shall we hang with the Fehlings AGAIN, honey? We haven't seen them in, what, 7 minutes?" In all seriousness, though, it's all been an interesting experience to say the least. Doing life together on a compound is one thing, but quarantining together is another. Thank goodness they're not tired of us yet. "Breeze" and "'Tell" are as solid as it gets. They talk raising babies, trying to figure out TikTok, navigating a dual work-from-home life, and then, right as we're signing off, Page gets IN THERE with Breeze about the role she plays as not just a social media influencer, but as an influencer to our daughter as a strong woman, mom and all-around human being. It may have gotten a little dusty in the studio at that point. Check out Breeze (@emilybreeze) and 'Tell (@montell3) all over the socials. Welcome to the definitive Coronacast. For our last episode, we recorded a podcast with our friend Lindsay Shookus, who had taken a flight down to N.C. with her daughter. Lindsay sat on a couch next to Page while we recorded. She used a headset that had been used by a previous guest. Following the podcast, we took an Uber to a shopping center where we ate dinner in a crowded restaurant. How insane does that sequence of events sound today? Crazy times. For this one, Page and I talk quarantine, losing our minds, sharing a home office, having to surrender a brand new dog, anxiety, supporting local, trying to keep our kids' brains from turning into mush, and much more. Listen to this episode to feel better about your parenting...or just commiserate right along with us. Also - quick shout out to the editors of Charlotte Magazine who just voted Date Night with Jake and Page as the Best of the Best ("BOB") podcast in the Queen City. We're so thrilled to be among the amazing individuals and local businesses who were honored this year! Welcome back to Date Night! This episode marks our first threesome. OK, relax. It's not like that. It's just that we brought on our first single lady - Head of the Saturday Night Live Talent Department and the person who introduced us, Lindsay Shookus! Lindsay and Page met as freshmen at UNC (Go Heels!), and their friendship took off from there. They were roommates in Chapel Hill, and then later again a couple of years post-graduation in New York City. Both worked for NBC - Lindsay at Saturday Night Live and Page as a, yes, NBC Page - and they shared in dating successes and failures. That is until early 2005, when another mutual UNC friend connected Lindsay and Jake, who had just moved to New Jersey. Lindsay introduced Jake to Page, and the rest was history. Fast-forward 15 (WOW!) years, and Lindsay now runs the talent department for SNL, while Page and Jake got married and started a podcast. ;-) We skipped over a ton there, obviously. Lindsay got married, had a child, got divorced, had an extremely public dating experience, was followed by the paparazzi, and is now extremely happy as a single mom, dating in the city, with a very "it's normal for us" relationship with her ex, raising an awesome seven-year-old daughter. SNL is rocking along, but Lindsay's also excited about a new project (that she founded with ANOTHER fellow UNC/NYC friend Kristen Merrick!), Women Work F#cking Hard. Lindsay and Kristin's goal with the group is to bring together female leaders, entrepreneurs and overall badasses for an intimate and exclusive night of conversation. Three meet-ups in, and they've already been featured in InStyle Magazine. Decent start. Having "Shookbaby" - as our kids call her - on the pod was both a walk down memory lane and a very real look into someone who has gone through some personal ups and downs, but continues to raise the bar for herself personally and professionally. We can't wait to see what 2020 brings her. Be sure to check out Women Work F#cking Hard on Instagram at @womenworkfinghard. They have a website coming soon as well! Welcome to another round of Date Night! In this episode we chat with Charlotte blogger and influencer, Miranda Miller, and her husband Joshua. Miranda and Page met on Page's literal first day of launching Good Day Charlotte on Fox 46. Miranda made the celebration cake. It was delicious. And beautiful. These were her pre-purple hair days. A few years later fate brought them together again on the mean streets of...Pineville. Which...was only mean because this time all of both of their children were in tow, and that will make anyone mean. Fast-forward a couple more years and a couple thousand more insta-followers (she is a "swipe up" person now!!,) and Miranda and Page are back. Husbands in tow. Kids relegated to the downstairs only. Miranda and Joshua were our first #PlayroomPodcast experiment (ahem... GUESTS). They came over on a Saturday morning and GOT IN THERE with us. We discussed how they met and Joshua's penchant for double-thongs, Miranda's thoughts on how we're teaching our children about sex (WE ARE DOING IT WRONG), and how they might be the only family who crosses more work/life lines than we do. We also got into the "rules" about what's fair game to share on Miranda's blog and how Joshua supports their family with his prowess as a sign maker. Or something like that. Page still isn't sure. At some point while we were upstairs our youngest daughter June had locked their oldest daughter Bella in the coat closet, turned off the light and simply left, like some warped game of hide-and-seek... without the seek. When we came down Bella exited, gently relayed what had happened, and then offered to take a picture of all the grown-ups "for the post." Because her mama is a blogger and SHE GETS IT. If only her dad enjoyed having his picture taken... Be sure to check out Miranda's blog at www.mirandaincharlotte.com! We’d love to hear from you as well! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
Happy New Year! In our last episode we teased that 2020 was (hopefully...maybe...yeah, definitely) going to be a big year for the podcast and otherwise. We get into those goals on this episode. The headline - More. Getting. Ish. Done. We hope you have a safe and happy start to your new year, and we look forward to having you along for the ride in 2020. Past episodes and more can be found at jakeandpage.com.
Happy Holidays from the Fehlings! The cover image for this end-of-year episode is fitting. We've clearly got a plan - we're wearing matching, albeit it purposefully hideous outfits, but we're also clearly not quite nailing it. That's what the holiday season has represented for us with the podcast each of the last three years. Life gets in the way of podcasting. Go figure. In 2019 we brought on some amazing guests. We introduced Page and Jake's Takes. We had a TON of fun. But our goals for 2020 are bigger (we get into that next episode!). They're also simpler. We invested in podcasting equipment in our home. We're going to bring guests onto our turf. But more importantly, we're going to just flat out podcast more. About parenting. About our kids. About what makes relationships tick. We'd love to hear from you on what we should discuss and who we should bring on! If you're new to the pod, past episodes can be found at jakeandpage.com and wherever you get your podcasts. We hope you're having a wonderful holiday season, and we can't wait to see what the new year has in store!
Welcome to another round of Date Night! In this episode we chat with Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown, the husband-wife duo behind some of Charlotte's favorite restaurants. Jeff and Jamie co-own several of the NoDa neighborhood's favorite spots, including Haberdish, Crepe Cellar, Growlers Pourhouse and Reigning Doughnuts. Both are business-savvy, MBA-carrying entrepreneurs who had careers outside of the culinary industry before quitting and traveling internationally to figure out what they wanted to do when they grew up. Fortunately for the Queen City, they settled on becoming restaurateurs, and the rest is history. Jamie opened up about a health scare she experienced more than a year ago and how that helped shape an extremely regimented diet and approach to health and wellness. It's a new normal for the couple, and as they explained, provides for light-hearted moments when they get invited to food tastings and other culinary-related events and Jeff takes not only Jamie, but their chefs as well - a third wheel who will actually be able to eat. We chatted about their crazy lives, their three kids and an exciting new project of theirs coming to the Plaza Midwood neighborhood and much more. Be sure to check out Jamie and Jeff's restaurants in NoDa on your next date night! We’d love to hear from you as well! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
Hello there, Date Nighters. Been a while! For this episode, we're bringing back two of our favorites as part of a live show meets date night meets Page and Jake's takes. The audio is from a September conference in Charlotte called EmpowerCon. Our good friend Meredith Dean rounded up some of Queen City's finest for the event, and she also invited us. Speakers talked culture, politics, entertainment, and yes - parenting. Or adulting. Or how to make a fool of yourself in front of large groups. Either way, that was our topic...and we took this one a few places. Buckle up. Fortunately we didn't go down in flames alone, and in fact, we were carried by the other couple joining us: Jacinda and Derrick (aka "Fly Ty") Jacobs! Sound familiar? They should! Fly Ty and Jacinda joined us on Date Night back on Episode 12. Meredith asked us to talk about how we balance careers and family, and at the end of the day for us it always comes back to "Create Your Own Normal." Do what works for you and don't apologize for it. Every question we get asked inevitably ends up back there. Create your own normal. We’d love to hear from you! Please subscribe, share, like, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
Warning. Luke warm takes on screens are coming. Oh yeah. We're going there. What started as an idea to talk about screens and kids and how much kids should be on screens, quickly turned into a discussion about screens, technologies and behaviors among...ADULTS. And to say we disagree would be an unders---sorry...hold on one sec...sorry, a friend is texting...yeah, sorry, it's just that we haven't heard from him in a while...OK, yep...sorry, one more sec...OK where were we? What are your screen/phone rules for your kids? For your spouse? For the friend you're sitting next to in an Uber? All I know is that the picture you see here associated with this episode is of one of the rare times our family was all together AND screen free...and that's probably not a great thing. We’d love to hear from you! Please subscribe, share, comment, like and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round...'round and 'round...'round and--OK, you get it. And much like the wheels on the bus, we're back around again for another dose of Page and Jake's Takes. This week marks Back to School week for many here in Charlotte, so we thought it was fitting to weigh in. Jake loves to make a big deal about Back to School, and while Page appreciates it, she doesn't think working parents should stress if they miss it. Jake reminisces on the one outfit he wore for essentially a year straight in 7th grade while Page hearkens back to her first day of high school when she realized she was now in school with WOMEN...and that she needed to grow out her bangs. We’d love to hear from you! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
“I just want to be clear...this is not a man-hating thing. I LOVE men. The men I’ve worked with along the way are WHY I am where I am today.” That was the quote, from a “Women in Sports” panel hosted by the Charlotte Knights, that made Page fall into both professional and friendship love with Charlotte Checkers COO Tera Black. Ever since hearing it, Page and Jake have wanted to get Tera and the one man she loves the MOST onto Date Night. And Tera better love Jamie Black a lot, because not only are these two married, but they also work together! Jamie is a former professional hockey player himself, who, in addition to being one of the more pleasant and easy-going human beings alive, is a member of the Checkers’ Front Office as well, as the team's Controller. Listen in as Page and Jake talk with the Blacks about balancing their work and home lives that so often and so thoroughly overlap, what it was like winning the Calder Cup this year, how much fun they have raising their two daughters...and everything in between! Be sure to check out the Charlotte Checkers this season! We’d love to hear from you as well! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
Welcome to another round of Date Night! In this episode we're bringing back Penn and Kim Holderness of the Holderness Family, but this time, we're on their turf. This episode is a replay of a Holderness Family Podcast episode they aired of us on June 11. We talked Father's Day, making friends as adults and much more...and then we talked about it again, because Penn forgot to insert a memory card for the first recording. OMG, Penn. We love Penn and Kim. We don't need to belabor it here - you can listen to our first episode with them (Ep. 5 on May 9, 2017) - but they are some of our dearest friends. Page and Penn worked together, we had all of our kids around the same time and on and on. It's been incredible to watch them blow up and build their parody music video/parenting/relationship brand. And to think, that first Christmas Jammies video Christmas card of theirs was meant to catch up with family and announce their new video production business... We beatboxed, faked laughed at jokes we had to tell a second time and then they ran to jump on a flight while we hustled our kids into the car to head back to Charlotte. We know we're not alone in thinking it's hard to make really good friends as adults, so when you do, you drive three hours to hang for a quick 24. Be sure to check out the Holderness Family Podcast wherever you get your podcasts, and follow @TheHoldernessFamily pretty much everywhere on social media. Their videos and relationship content is on point. We’d love to hear from you as well! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
You already know what time it is. Buckle up for another episode of Page and Jake's Takes, where parenting topics are bandied about. What? My thing. Your thing. Scoreboard. Keeping score. Whatever you want to call it, this is how we run our house, relationships, chores, trips, etc. Jake gets a guys trip? You better believe Page will have one with her girlfriends before the end of the year. Page primarily does laundry, dishes, communication with teachers; Jake does bills, car stuff and emptying bookbags/homework. No "secret contracts" no trying to sneak one past the other person. Some people think we're nuts, some people swear by this method. Knock on wood, it's worked for us for 13 years. What works for you and your spouse? Believe us, we are open to advice! We’d love to hear from you! Please subscribe, share, comment and also suggest ideas for future guests! For past episodes please visit jakeandpage.com. Thanks for listening!
You know the Girl Tribe girls, Carrie Barker and Sarah Baucom. But do you know their boys, Derek and Ryan? Well, you will after listening in on the triple date night we had with them. You’ll learn how Carrie and Sarah turned a high school “close acquaintanceship” into two besties starting and now running one of the fastest growing businesses in Charlotte, why none of us will be chairing our local chapters of the La Leche League anytime soon, and that “be the scientist” is the relationship advice you never knew you needed. Listen in and enjoy getting to know the masterminds behind this powerful business turned #girlpower movement, and their super supportive partners who help free them up enough to make it all happen. Jake, in particular, was pumped to commiserate (ahem... hear from) some other dads who do heavy lifting kiddo duties. And to accidentally play for the girls' team during Catchphrase. AGAIN. Welcome to another round of Page and Jake’s Takes, where we offer super-extra-barely-mild opinions on parenting-related topics. The rules of babysitting...are they for the kids? The babysitter? The parents? Heading into this we always thought we had one main rule concerning babysitters: USE THEM. Early and often. (Sort of like how we wish we did for the wedding in the cover image of this episode!) Turns out there’s more to it than that. During this episode, Page and Jake discuss everything from how much actual work is reasonable to expect of a babysitter, or if it's OK to have them literally just sit and watch your baby. They also take on the age-old question of how/when to do the "double round-up," and Page tells a story that will make you question her worth as a human. Or at least as a babysitter. Sit back, listen and enjoy. Also, can you come by around 5 p.m. on Saturday? We could really use a night out... We’d love to hear from you! When Page first started interviewing for her job at FOX 46 back in 2014, it was Nick Kosir who kept her in the loop through the 807 step process. Teeing her up for good answers during auditions. Calling to tell her that their head of sales was the one voting for a different morning anchor. (Editor's note: She's never let him live that down.) When Page eventually landed the job, she and Nick realized neither of their families knew many people in Charlotte. We had kids the same age. His wife worked in TV too. A family friendship was meant to be. So, we planned a Kosling play-date. When Nick and Danielle showed up to our house they walked right around to the backyard with their kid, a grocery bag full of beer, frozen pizza, and sleeping bags. They were spending the night. This was gonna be a magical relationship. It’s been so magical that they moved an hour and a half away immediately after that and we haven’t socialized with them since. #life Until now. Nick has since gone viral in the most ridiculously fabulous of ways, dancing into all of our hearts on Instagram... much the same way he danced into Danielle’s years ago when he was her boss. Oh, snap. So much to unpack with these two. So much to love. It's time to get viral with the Kosirs. Enjoy! Wait, sorry, that came out wrong... We’d love to hear from you! Welcome to another round of Page and Jake’s Takes, where we offer super-extra-barely-mild opinions on parenting-related topics. Family vacations. Do those even exist? Or should they be called family trips? We've taken the kids to a million places, but can only recall one trip where they behaved from start to finish. The trip was to Utah in 2017, and it made us think that we had this parenting thing down. It was incredible. We laughed, we hiked, we ate real food. Then we went to a local park a couple months later and we were convinced that DSS should probably take our kids away. So what's the best way to tackle family vacations? Are there rules? Expectations that should be set? Or should you just say screw it and let the chips - or Goldfish - fall where they may? We’d love to hear from you!
