When you dream about the future, you have a direction to set off on. There’s a goal to work towards. In this solo episode, I’m sharing what I’ve learned about setting big goals and how that helps you thrive in this business. Key Takeaways Goals can come in all sizes. Dream big and have a goal that may take years to realize. At the same time, create short-term tangible goals to keep you motivated along the way. It’s Time to Dream Big When you think about your video business, whether you’re new to it or not, I’m sure there’s something you wish were different. Perhaps you want to work fewer hours, make more passion projects, or save more money. It could be anything. But if you dreamed about your future lately, now is the time. Creating A Roadmap Towards Your Dreams It’s the dream and your goals that keep us motivated when life’s distractions get in the way. When you remember your greater purpose it becomes easier to remember why you are passionate about this work. Set yourself some short-term goals that will lead you toward your dream. Doing this will keep you motivated and show you just how close you are to achieving your dream. Dealing With The Unexpected There will be unexpected interruptions along the way. Things will happen that you just can’t plan for. Yet, when you have a plan directing you towards your goals, you won’t lose track of your ultimate destination.  Overcoming obstacles also requires thinking with an abundance mindset. Don’t just strive to meet the bare minimum of survival. Set big goals that lead you to thrive. Then, when things inevitably go wrong, you’ll be better positioned to overcome them. What goal can you set to allow yourself to dream big? What do you need to do to thrive, not just survive? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode: Finding your direction by examining your goals [2:52] The importance of having big dreams [9:10] Not undervaluing what you have to offer [15:45] How your big dreams will impact other people [22:20] Quotes “When you dream about the future - when you set goals - you have a direction that you want to head into. Then, you can work backward and think about how you want to get there.” [3:07] “I do believe that something very powerful happens when you dream and when you believe in something and work towards it. I think it’s more likely to happen when you start verbalizing and writing down your dreams, goals, hopes, and desires." [9:14] “You gotta believe that you’re worth it. And you gotta believe that it’s okay to dream really big for your life.” [22:26] Links: Sign up for the Onward Summit Waitlist Join the Studio Sherpas Facebook group Core Storyblocks Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? 230: Building Success By Turning Your Competition Into Community w/ Heather Zara

I used to look at my competition and feel fear and inadequacy. But as I started to grow into my own identity as a business owner, I began looking at it differently. Now I see other similar businesses as sources of motivation. They’ve gone from being my competitors to part of my community. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing one of them. Key Takeaways Don’t be afraid to get in touch with other similar businesses in your area. This has the possibility of opening up all sorts of new opportunities. It’s not enough to just be good at something. You need to enjoy it as well or else it’s not truly a strength. About Heather Zara Heather Zara is the owner and CEO of Zara Creative, a Detroit-based video production studio that helps forward-thinking brands make meaningful connections with their audiences. As an observer of the human experience, Heather has built her career upon the pillars of creativity and communication while letting her passions and curiosity lead the way. With over 22 years of experience, this award-winning storyteller has interviewed inspiring humans like Martha Stewart, Kobe Bryant, Michael Strahan, John Varvatos, LeBron James, and more. Stories have the power to heal, shape, and transform our lives, and Heather has made it her life’s work to tell those stories. The Transformative Nature of Building Community A lot happens when you stop viewing other video businesses as competition and start to see them as other members of your community. Envy turns into inspiration. You become clearer on what you want from your own business. You also find people to share information, knowledge, and referrals with. Ultimately, the work becomes more fulfilling this way. It’s All About Mindset Heather and I have both found that this is only possible with self-reflection. You need to take the time to look back on your journey, understand where you’ve come from, and evaluate what you’ve learned along the way. This takes a certain amount of humility. It also requires that you be kind to yourself. This is a learning process for everybody. Fortunately, when you have a community that you can turn to, there’s no need to go through it alone. Could your business benefit from having community or competition? How have you learned humility as a business owner? Leave a comment on the episode page!   In This Episode: Finding inspiration from your community [6:00] How to reach out to other video companies [14:20] Understanding growth through transformation [18:50] Finding joy through creating meaningful work [27:45] Lessons learned through refining your hiring process [32:25] The two most important qualities of strength [42:20]   Quotes “It is so much more freeing when you can look at your community as a catalyst to help you grow.” [8:20] “Any time you feel envy, it’s information. It’s information of the direction you actually want to be going.” [13:27] “I think that being a business owner requires a lot of humility.” [42:21] “Be yourself as much as you possibly can. If being yourself means wearing a leather jacket and ripped jeans in a meeting, great! Go be yourself. Don’t change yourself to fit into this role that you’re telling yourself society needs you to show up as.” [46:26]   Links: Sign up for the Client Budget Workshop Join the Studio Sherpas Facebook group Core Storyblocks Find Heather Zara online Follow Heather on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Everything Belongs by Richard Rohr Capri for Girls   Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? This episode sees the panel look at how collaboration can help you in addition to others you work with.   The Episode: The Importance of Collaboration   There is a certain narrative in the online world around the scarcity of business and the need to look after oneself at the expense of others. We are here to tell you just how false this is and how reaching out, collaborating, and helping others can be one of the best things you can do for your business and its success. With the never-ending pool of potential clients and the multitude of other professionals doing great work, why not link in to what is happening and join the party?   In This Episode Finding the right people to connect and work with [0:15:05] Providing value to others and offering help where possible [0:20:42] The reality around the size of your potential market [0:25:28] A rising tide and the benefits of sharing ideas [0:28:02] Actionable steps for kickstarting collaboration [0:32:15] Reaching and out complimenting good work [0:38:41]   “Ten times out of ten, if you are able to communicate with peers in your industry you're going to get opportunities that you don't have otherwise.” — Ren Jones   Building a Network of Relationships A good first step in collaboration is to find people who produce content that you like. There are too many clients out there for you to work with by yourself, but you can serve more people by connecting and sharing ideas with other trainers. Through a simple practice of reaching out, you can easily build meaningful relationships over time, and these connections will push your boundaries and expand your opportunities.    Generosity and Its Benefits There is a lot to be said about how far you can get through serving and offering help to others. A generous attitude is always possible, so when you find your people it can be very easy to create a nurturing and supportive environment. We also recommend continuously thinking about how you can further extend these branches and broaden your horizons even more. So don't be afraid to reach out to those people you have identified that you like and respect.   Celebrating Others and Getting in on the Action If you want a booming business, you want to be close to the action, and where the people in your field are located. This means getting involved in groups, networks, and events. By pooling ideas with others you also improve your chances and output, and there are loads of ways to do this in real life and on social media. Experience and research has shown me that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition. We all have our unique needs. That’s why it’s crucial to find what works best for you. What if there is a technology that examines your DNA to help determine the best diet for you?   About John O’Conner John O’Connor is the Founder of Gene Food and the host of the Gene Food Podcast. Like many who make their way into the wellness world, John was inspired to create a platform that could empower people to find personalized health solutions after he realized his health and dietary needs didn’t fit the template offered by conventional nutrition and medicine. After his career in the NYC startup world left him stressed, burned out, physically sick, and unsatisfied with what he saw as the cookie-cutter approach of traditional medicine, John became a “citizen scientist” and turned to deep medical research as well as alternative forms of medicine to restore his health.  A passionate “bio-individualist,” who believes there is no one size fits all approach to nutrition, his current journey is one of self-discovery aimed at gaining as much insight as possible as to how his unique physiology works. John’s role at Gene Food is to help condense and distill the latest studies and commentary on nutrition science and nutrigenomics and communicate the core message to the Gene Food audience.   Using Genetic Information to Stay Healthy The factors that make up your health are wholly unique to you. John is on a mission to help people discover what makes them unique and find a diet to match. His program, Gene Food, takes a genetic-level look at cardiometabolic health. By identifying different phenotypes of heart disease, individuals can focus on the diet that’s most healthy to them. With heart disease being one of the largest health concerns in the country, taking care of cardiovascular health is central to longevity. Beyond that, understanding your genetics also provides important information into everything from getting optimal sleep, caffeine consumption, susceptibility to allergies, and how the body detoxifies.   Genetic Reports as an Important Tool When I got my report from Genen Food, so many things clicked into place. I found that the report confirmed many aspects of my own experience, such as my reactions to sugar. Other things were a bit more surprising, like warnings to reduce my blood pressure. John explains that the report is a tool to help people achieve an understanding of their cardiovascular footprint. Being unique, the more information that you have, the better you can build a diet that’s best for your lifestyle and health. What would you like to learn from a genetic report? It’s one of the most important things you can do to be in an optimal state of health.” [24:07] “We’re trying to empower people to eat in a way that makes them healthy.” [48:22] “The genetics is one piece of the puzzle. The Truth About Time Management with Ashlee Berghoff

Key Takeaways Setting policies for yourself is key to owning your own time. Having a policy of saying “no” to things you don’t want to do is central to this. Making the conscious choice to choose your own priorities will help you overcome a fear of missing out and let you retake control of your time. To overcome procrastination, work to recognize the root causes of it. That will give you control over why you put off unpleasant tasks and discover ways to make them more manageable. Mapping out the project and setting your own deadlines also helps with this.     If you’re anything like me, organization doesn’t come easily. As an entrepreneur, I’ve had to learn a lot about time management in particular. Balancing the many parts of my business and my personal life requires a lot of tools and strategies. I wish I met today’s guest when I got started because she is a master of efficient time management.   About Ashlee Berghoff Ashlee Berghoff is the founder of A Squared Online. She helps people get off the hamster wheel by taking clear and focused action,  implement time-saving systems, and delegate effectively. As her clients become more effective and productive they can cut out the noise, experience real momentum, and confidently channel their time and energy into what matters most to them.   Taking Control of Time as a Resource Although Ashlee works mostly with entrepreneurs, her lessons and advice apply to all of us. We all want to be masters of our time, our most valuable and finite resource. Ashlee recognizes that learning to manage time requires redefining your systems. Rather than creating rigid rules to live by, we should understand that we actually have control over our lives and can make decisions based on what is most important to us. Central to Ashlee’s approach is the recognition that your time is finite. There is much you are going to miss out on. That’s okay. What’s not okay is losing control over what those things are. This means consciously acknowledging your priorities and giving yourself the space you need to enjoy them.   The Key to Kicking Procrastination We’ve all succumbed to procrastination from time to time. When it happens, Ashlee urges us to dig below the surface to try to find out why. There’s usually a specific underlying cause. Maybe it’s perfectionism, fear, or something else. When you understand what is causing the procrastination, you’ll then be able to take control and work through it. Then you can create a timeline that serves you with your own manageable deadlines. In that end, creating systems to manage your time will lead to a more joyful life. It prevents work from creeping into your personal life and spending more time doing what you love with the people you love. Sit down, think about the things that are most important to you, and set up systems to protect the time you need to enjoy them. What time-management systems can you start using? Leave a comment on the episode page!   Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here!   In This Episode Finding a passion for time-management [5:00] How we can all apply the lessons of productive entrepreneurs in our own lives [10:45] Why control over one’s time tends to differ for women and men [15:45] Overcoming the fear of missing out [26:25] Actionable tips for overcoming procrastination [33:30] How time-management systems can lead to more joy in life [45:50]   Quotes “Time management has been relegated to ‘organized people’ and planners and 5-step blog posts when in reality it’s one of the most important aspects of our lives.” [7:50] “I can only fit a few things into this life. What do I want them to be? I can cut out everything else with the recognition that if I try to cram it all in, I won’t enjoy any of it.” [27:19] “We cannot control time. We can leave time, but we cannot control it.” [44:08]   Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! I have long been a fan of Dr. Meghann Berglund and I am thrilled to have her spread her wisdom and incredibly powerful words with all of us today. From shelter medicine to private practice and relief work, Dr. Berglund has seen a lot. And with two daughters on top of that, she has a wide range of stories and life advice to share. We are discussing everything from the staggering 40,000 animals she has spayed or neutered over her career, to imposter syndrome and postpartum depression. She is sharing her theory of lizard brain and owl brain, why you need to make sure you ask for help when you need it, and why perseverance is the ultimate key to success. By appreciating your own little acts of bravery and checking the expectations you hold for yourself, you can stop doubting yourself and start embracing the practice of courage. Dr. Berglund believes that by working to speak for those who do not have the ability to speak for themselves, we can find small victories that ultimately amount to self-confidence and freedom. Join us for an honest and down to earth conversation about sharing your issues and being okay with your normality. Have you ever struggled with some of the issues Dr. Berglund expresses on this episode? Let us know how you are getting by in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode Finding the ‘why’ behind your passion Caring for vet school classmates beyond the years Keeping your passion fresh throughout a veterinary career The differences between shelter medicine, private practice and relief work How to check your expectations and feel more fulfilled   Quotes “Everybody has a story they can tell you, everybody has something they can teach you. And I started to realize that that's really, at least to me, what this podcast does. Everybody, no matter how well you think you know them, has treasures to offer and knowledge to give and experience to share. (10:40) “You may not know [your why] in undergrad, you may not know it in vet school. I was lucky in that I managed to find it before vet school and then I had some purpose and some direction in vet school. But I'm not sure everybody does and that needs to be okay.” (34:50) “The relief business was sort of a way to kind of dip my toe in a bunch of different places. But what it ended up being was just this really cool bouquet I got to pick from all my different skills and all the places I had worked.” (56:47) “What I have gotten out of this experience, and out of my life's journey to this point, is that most bravery is unintentional.” (1:31:41) “The merit is in the work and in the process and in the learning and not in the outcome. You can you know ‘that's fine’ and you toss it in the fail bucket and you learn something from it and you try again.” (1:51:24) “Good or bad, everybody has their treasures. And listening to people and asking about their treasures they are carrying, or their fails that they are carrying, and just saying like ‘hey I see you for who you are’, is probably a good way for all of us to connect with each other better.” (1:54:14)   Links Enjoying these stories?
