A great leader knows how to get the most out of their team. Eric Materkowski is an expert in building strong team cultures that increase productivity and create supportive and innovative work environments on the golf course. Eric received his Turfgrass Management degree from Ohio State ATI and has been a golf course superintendent for 28 years. He recently finished his 10th year as Golf Course Superintendent at St. Clair Country Club. Before St. Clair, he was the Golf Course Superintendent at Wildwood Golf Club, Green Oaks Country Club, and Armco Golf Club.  Getting Involved in the Industry Eric has served in various roles on the board of the Greater Pittsburgh Golf Course Superintendents Association since 2006. Being part of the board forced him to learn fast and embrace new opportunities.  Relationships and networking are essential in the golf industry, and a board position is a great way to make new connections. Don't underestimate the value of having someone to call and ask questions when you feel stuck. Bringing the Best Out of Your Team At St. Clair, everyone on the team has designated roles but is encouraged to work together. Eric advises anyone in a leadership position to create a welcoming team environment.  Get to know the frontline workers and groundskeepers, and encourage assistants to do the same. Not only does this promote a better working environment, but it will give you more confidence to advocate for your team in board meetings. Be patient with new hires. A great training and onboarding program goes a long way toward avoiding mistakes, so make sure groundskeepers have all the information they need before going out on the golf course. Lastly, remember that you were in their shoes once. Everyone has a first day.  Get to know your new hires and interns, and be as involved as possible in the hiring process. “There's no one that I see who can beat Donald Trump. He's vanquished all of them,” says Sam Jean, who returns for another special Raw & Uncut edition of Cuckoo 4 Politics. He and Michael discuss the GOP candidates running for the U.S. presidency in 2024. Mike Pence is an irrelevant dearth of charisma, who has returned to his pre-Trump irrelevancy. Nikki Haley has plenty of charisma but is running a campaign from 2002. Michael's dislike for Tim Scott borders on the irrational, yet is still not as irrational as those who refrained from donating to Scott's campaign because of his single status. Chris Christie has a lower than ten percent approval rating but is the only one willing to take Trump head on. Ron DeSantis' thuggish tactics and empty policies don't translate outside of his limited base in Florida. Michael takes pointed aim at his treatment of both Black constituents and politicians.  Does any of this really matter, though? As Sam points out that despite being indicted on 91 counts of felony, including inciting an insurrection, Donald Trump's MAGA base still blindly supports him. And his fellow politicians will do what they must to curry favor with him. After all, this is not the Republican party of Reagan, Bush Sr. or even Bush Jr. Despite the unprecedented vitriol and unbecoming behavior displayed by the party, Michael explains why he isn't panicked—-yet.  Quotes  “Everybody has to account for Trump and Trump's followers. And this is why I told you it wasn't a race from the jump, from the start, it wasn't a race. Trump had already won. Iowa, they come with a very serious question, because they're given this sort of stage that they aren't given most of the time. And DeSantis just does not connect with people. If he's not bullying, he just does not connect with people. Trump might not like his followers, but he has no problem shaking their hands.” (19:33 | Sam) “I'll say this. Ron DeSantis is not definitely loved in the state of Florida, not entirely. Again, he's only admired in certain pockets within Florida. But I recall his rhetoric about, Black Lives Matter. His rhetoric about Critical Race Theory, his effort to minimize the political power within black communities to relegate them to one congressional elected official, his firing an elected official who was a black woman, I believe the district attorney, to put someone else in place. It doesn't resonate well.” (23:58 | Michael) ‘About the 91 indictments, it means absolutely nothing. OK, I'm being glib about it, when I say it means nothing. It doesn't mean nothing. In the grand scheme of history, it's a big deal. But if you're asking me in the particular, today, in the political environment for the Republican Party, what it means, it means nothing to them. And the reason it means nothing to them, is he continues to lead every single poll. Know which procedures are covered under medical rather than dental. Coding is how you communicate with insurance companies — learn it! But what I've noticed is there are a lot of patients in the world that will only go see an in-network dentist. Period. They're brainwashed, or that's their mentality, or it's financial. Whatever the reason, there are a lot of people that will never set foot in a fee-for-service office or an out-of-network office. It's just what they are. And I wanted to help them.” (6:08—6:40) “If we understand how insurance works, the amount of write-offs we have to take are so far less than what we think. When we went back in-network, most of my fee structure now is 15% or 20% discount, when it used to be 35%, 40%, 50%. Well, we also have plans for our cash patients, membership plans, where they get a 10% or 15% discount naturally. So, for me to give 10% or 15% to a cash patient or 15% or 20% to an insurance patient, is not a big difference. And so, I can treat everybody pretty close to the same fees in-network. So, why not? And our collections went up by $700,000 last year.” (6:45—7:35) “The number-one thing I would say I learned myself was, we're taught well in clinical. And when I first got out, the CE courses I took were mostly clinical. They're the fun stuff. They're the ones we want to learn more of. But I realized after spending a fortune on some high-end clinical classes on TMJ therapies and CAD/CAM and a lot of other things, it doesn't matter what we know if we can't communicate with the patient well enough to get them to want to purchase what we can do.” (8:34—9:12) “When I started learning more about communications with patients, that opened up everything else. It doesn't matter if we're the best clinician in the world to do an implant, or high-end surgeries, or whatever. Because if we can't get the patients to say, ‘Yes, I'm willing to drop X amount of money to have you do this thing that will change my life,' it doesn't matter.” (9:14—9:36) “I've been a business coach for quite a few dentists. And one of the biggest challenges I see [in] most offices [that] are struggling financially is treatment acceptance. And dentists have an average of 25% or 30%. And it boggles my mind because we always want new patients, but we have all these patients that aren't getting treated in the first place. And if we can just have higher treatment acceptance, we don't need new people. We could drop insurance plans. We can do a whole lot if we have the ability to take care of the people that are in front of us already.” (9:40—10:14) “[What most dentists get wrong about PPOs and insurance is] listening to the myths. There are so many myths in the industry. Feeling like you have to file every claim, regardless, is one of them. Insurance companies don't want to see claims that they're not going to pay for. It's a burden to them as well. And yet, I see it all the time, and it hinders what we do. Because insurance companies, for instance, if you do services that are noncovered, their software doesn't know how to deal with that. And so,...

Today's guest is here to explain how to do it in a healthy and sustainable way.   About Rebekah Matznick, RD Rebekah has always had a passion for nutrition and fitness. Growing up she knew she wanted to be a nutritionist and work in the health industry. After graduating from Purdue University, Rebekah became a Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine. She then completed her Dietetic Internship and Master's degree in Nutrition at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. She became a Registered Dietitian and first worked as a Public Health Nutritionist at the Guilford County WIC Program in North Carolina. Rebekah absolutely loved and enjoyed getting to work with women, infants, and children on a daily basis. She then worked as a Health and Wellness Coordinator at a company doing employee wellness, which she loved as well! As a small business owner, you actually have a lot of flexibility. You can pivot what you do and make offers that big companies can’t. Especially during tough times like these, you can find opportunities that may not have existed before. As today’s guest is going to tell you, there’s a gift that lies in scarcity. His father was a trader and collector of artifacts where he learned how to sell, talk, pitch, and deal at a very young age. He taught him an entrepreneurial spirit he needed. Bruce started his business selling jewelry in school. Later, he got into a selling business with an impressive selling performance by just observing and learning from the people on top. Then, he started his own company. Bruce learned the business organically with entrepreneurial attitudes with trial and error. His early pieces of training have helped him do things in business much better than most people do. On the other hand, Bruce never gives up on his ambition. He wanted to be an announcer, inspired by his half-brother Michael Buffer. Seeing successful people motivates him. He loves the attitude for standing up for yourself and sticking what you believed. So he fought that ambition for years until he became a professional mixed martial arts ring announcer and the official Octagon announcer for UFC events. Moreover, Bruce emphasized that in business you need to have passion too in what you’re doing. If you can find your passion and you can monetize it then you won’t be working on living a lifestyle. He is always world-class in what he does because of his work ethic and passion. Also, Bruce believed that we’re all GOD - a Governor of our Own Destiny. No matter what you believe in or get the support from, in the end, you’ll be the one who makes a decision for yourself. Therefore, you have to believe in yourself, do not change your principle and stay consistent because everything is all about attitudes. Set your work as always the first time, give your best and prove them and to yourself that you deserve the job. Bruce doesn’t let jealousy and green monsters into his business. According to him, “don’t be jealous of people if they’re successful; learn from them, absorb them why they’re successful”. It’s all about learning from others and applies those principles along with your basic principles and forms your path. Be realistic on what is your goal, the steps towards the goal; achieve the goal, the goal, then the next goal. Lastly, whether you want to be a leader or follower, either way you can still live an amazing life, just find what you wanted. But never forget where you came from! Problems are abundant when it comes to the staffing and recruiting industry. They come in different shapes and forms and many of them can easily be spotted. However, there is one billion dollar problem that many recruiters didn’t even know they have. This is called back door hires. Everybody knows that backdoor hires happen but they don't recognize it when it happens to them. This is called the billion dollar problem as many staffing and recruiting companies lose out on a large sum of money because of back door hires. But what exactly is this billion dollar problem and what can you do about it? Understanding The Billion Dollar Problem Many clients don't realize that they're owed when a debtor tells them that they find somebody that's worked or they say “gee we don't know you for this backdoor for this placement because we already knew the candidate”. This is a very common excuse that will be used and you’re assured that Back Door Hires will collect 80% of the time. There are a number of ways you can make it easier though and that’s to have a possessory period, and to make sure that your contract is consistent. Have a Possessory Period Every staffing and recruiting company will want to have a possessory period in their contracts. This ensures that they’ll be able to hold their clients liable to pay for their services. This includes even if the candidate was supposedly hired by another staffing and recruiting company. With this in place you’re almost always guaranteed to get your fee even if it means your client will have to pay both staffing and recruiting companies for their services. Keep Your Contract’s Possessory Period and Other Details Consistent To have a solid contract you’re going to want everything to be consistent. The possessory period included. You could have a clause that protects you 110% but another clause mentions that you don’t owe them a fee if they did this or that. These consistency problems can cripple your contract. If your contract is not solid and there are a number of inconsistencies then it might be rendered invalid. This makes it much more difficult to get the fee that you’re owed and you might not even get it depending on how bad your contract is structured. If They Make Excuses, Shut Up and Call Us The one thing that we recommend whenever they say “hey there was another recruiter we're not gonna pay you” or “we already knew the candidate, we’re not gonna pay you” or anything in between, is to shut up and call us. This may sound blunt, but it’s the truth. Whatever you say can and will be held against you once you come to collect. Whatever happens, cease all communications with the offending company and get the people that need to be involved, involved. Get us involved and get your attorney involved so you have the best chance of collecting your owed fee. The farming industry has changed dramatically over the years. With the introduction of factory farming, animal agriculture is causing more harm than good to not only our health but our environment. Joe Heitzeberg joins me to talk about his business, Crowd Cow, that focuses on supporting small, local farmers to rear the best meat and fish possible. Crowd Cow works with farmers who care about their animals to raise them with love and happiness before ending their lives with as much compassion and gratitude as possible. Joe explains what problems industrial farming has had on the local agriculture and environment. He also tells us how a few alternative views of the legislation can allow farmers to claim their animals as organic, free-range, and grass-fed when in reality they're anything but. Gabby Mooney, also known as singer and performer Lyrx, joins Bunnie this week. She’s always been a rocker bad girl, and it was love at first Insta-stalking when Bunnie first heard her single ‘Take My Money’. Gabby talks about people wanting to close her in and shut her down in the music industry, and why she will always be a rebel that stays true to herself. She talks about growing up as the sister of Shay from hit country duo ‘Dan + Shay’, her dream collabs, how she met her Greek God of a man, and her company Posse Lashes.   Takeaways: Gabby goes by Lyrx because to her, lyrics are the most important part of music and what she is passionate about the most. He offers ideas of how to solve the  drug crisis that so many are facing today. Dr. Alexander had moved to Vancouver in 1970 and at that time it was in the midst of the Heroin Crisis where he met "real live junkies". He shares his findings with the Rat Park experiments: taking drug addicted rats in solitude, compared to free rats in a thriving rat park. He talks about the invisible isolation people can have and how fear can take away our critical thinking capacity. I have long been a fan of Dr. Meghann Berglund and I am thrilled to have her spread her wisdom and incredibly powerful words with all of us today. From shelter medicine to private practice and relief work, Dr. Berglund has seen a lot. And with two daughters on top of that, she has a wide range of stories and life advice to share. We are discussing everything from the staggering 40,000 animals she has spayed or neutered over her career, to imposter syndrome and postpartum depression. She is sharing her theory of lizard brain and owl brain, why you need to make sure you ask for help when you need it, and why perseverance is the ultimate key to success. You can you know ‘that's fine’ and you toss it in the fail bucket and you learn something from it and you try again.” (1:51:24) “Good or bad, everybody has their treasures.
