CONTENT WARNING: Please note that this episode contains depictions and stories of siblings lost by suicide, homicide and/or domestic violence. We understand that some people may find these triggering, activating and/or disturbing. Our guest Stacy shares her personal journey with her sister Katie Jo, painting a vivid picture of the nurturing role she assumed in her sister's life and the distance that time and circumstances can create. Stacy's personal reflections lead us through the transformation and tragic ending of her sister's life, underscoring the importance of paying attention to changes in our loved ones' behaviors. We're taken on a heart-rending path, from noticing Katie Jo's growing paranoia to confronting the reality of her untimely death due to domestic violence. Stacy's insights into the significance of victim impact statements, coping with unexpected loss, and the strength found in communities serve as a powerful reminder of the collective journey through sibling loss grief. As we connect over our own stories, we shed light on the importance of advocacy for domestic violence victims and the crucial role of organizations like The Peace Initiative in supporting those in need. Whether it's the cathartic process of writing a eulogy or the collective journey of navigating sibling loss grief together, we reaffirm the value of storytelling and the power of community in the healing process. Despite the name, I was still so unprepared for how very clear much of the water is in the Crystal River region of Florida. From snaking like a teal ribbon around trees and under bridges, to reflecting clouds like a salty mirror, on the day I went out on it, our boat sped closer on its glassy surface to a horizon already dotted with other anchored boats. Every year, fishing folks make the pilgrimage to this area of Florida to dive for bay scallops, and for those who grow up in the region, scalloping season is a cultural tradition, and usually one that begins as soon as a child can swim. Katie Jo Davis, owner of KD Outdoors Fishing Charters, remembers taking naps in the fish box on a boat before she could even walk. She's been fishing and scalloping these waters her whole life, and after 6 years in the U.S. Army, worked as a fishing guide in Canada before making her way back to her home waters. Bay scallops are the more petite cousins of sea scallops, the common “scallops” that show up on restaurant menus, but commercial harvest of bay scallops is prohibited in Florida, so one of the easiest ways to taste this very local delicacy is to catch them yourself. Captain Katie Jo knows just where to find them.
Have you felt it? That subtle shift in the air hinting at the first taste of fall? We have, and this week we are incredibly excited to embrace it by welcoming Katie Jo Glesing to the show. Katie is the Founder (and possible Physic Vampire) of Boo812: Paranormal Research and Edutainment. Katie embraces her affinity for all things Woo to explore beyond the veil with fellow researchers and individuals all across Kentucky and Indiana. It was absolutely fascinating to hear her story, learn more about local lore, and the current state of paranormal research as it receives increasingly more mainstream acceptance. We also hook each other up to Katie's spirit box and try some channeling of the spirits in the shop, as well as “Choose our own Adventure” with the help of a ghost in the machine. Is there a way to follow our personal path and passions, and have a family and/or a career? Life is about making lots of choices and finding balance, and there is no one answer that works for everyone. In this episode, Taralyn talks about keeping the embers of dreams alive while you try to find that balance for yourself and what works in your life. Her three tips for deeping the experience of developing your own gifts are to 1) remember what you loved as child, 2) carve out a little bit of space every day to keep furthering your gifts as you incubate them for another season in your life, and 2) periodically finding some time to do a deep plunge into whatever your gifts are. There is no new episode but I'm re-releasing EP92 as a nod to Pride month. This conversation is so important, it highlights what's possible, a family for same sex couples. I just sat back and enjoyed watching Katie & Jo reminisce over the birth over their son, Sonny. They were supported by their doula @pamjdpilates and really invested in birth preparation. They share some truly beautiful moments. Our conversation didn't end there but in time Jo and I will continue our chat which we will no doubt share with you all. You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work. Stephanie: Hello and welcome to Artbeat Radio! My name is Stephanie! This is our 100th podcast episode. Wow, that is crazy. Our 100th episode! Looks like we made it! Thank you for listening to our podcast. Hope you like the episode. Alison: Okay, now I remember there was one time when we were doing something and it didn't turn out right and somebody dropped a box. I don't know what was in the box but somebody accidentally dropped a box and then in class somebody got the words backwards. Like they accidentally screwed up the words and that was my favorite part. Brian: Well, I loved Katie Jo also. Interviewed her about her country music and she actually performed for us live. My favorite was interviewing the guy who played Spiderman. He was really interesting. Eric: Guess what folx, the interview with spiderman will be available as of next week! Brian: Stephanie. Stephanie: Yes? Brian: What podcast did you enjoy? Stephanie: I liked “Summer Sounds” because it was really upbeat and it was really nice and I also like that I have my professional headphones. I would like, in the future, to meet my goal, which is to be a person on the radio but talk about my play, which is going to be awesome. Hey Renee. Renee: Yes? Stephanie: What's your favorite part of the podcast? Renee: I loved interviewing Spider-man, Ricky because we have a lot in common and are the same age. Brian: Yeah, I really enjoyed the interview with Ricky Mena, who played Spiderman. Stephanie: I think the interview with Julianna and Matthew was my favorite. And I just like podcast because I just like it. I like it because I get to produce the episode about my play. That's why. My goal is to be on a radio station and be the head podcast talker and to talk about my musical and my jewelry business. And that's going to be fun. Go podcast class! Brian: What I love about working with KLBP a lot is getting my voice heard. Getting my thoughts across. To have some of my thoughts that I have not illustrated before and that's very important to me. It's a terrific radio station to air what we've learned. Tim: Well, I like the guests that we have and then talking about our program and sharing all our details. I enjoyed interviewing our staff and then others from- different staff from different sites and music instructors. I like the most about it how we come together as one. Alison: This is our 100th episode! Well, what do you think of it? Stephanie: I think that it's amazing so far. Alison: I didn't think we'd go this far. Stephanie: I know right? Brian: Aaron, what do you think about the 100th podcast episode? Aaron: I like it. Brian: Did you think that we would make it this far? Aaron: Yes. Brian: It's a real honor to interview you, Aaron. Stephanie? Stephanie: Yes, Brian? Brian: What do you think of the 100th episode? Stephanie: I think it's cool. Brian: Did you think that we would make it this far? Stephanie: No! That's crazy, Brian! Brian: Yeah! Stephanie: Wow. Brian: I'm-I'm with you. I can't imagine that we're up to the 100th. Stephanie: We gotta' keep going. It'll be 101! Brian: Yeah! *laughs* and maybe 102, 3, 4, 5 and so on. *laughter* Stephanie: How do you like this class? Brian: I love it. So much so that I took it last semester and I'm taking it this semester. I can't remember if I took it the semester before. Stephanie: Yeah. Brian: How do you like this podcast? Stephanie: I think it's great! I like- I like my first- I like my classes this year. They're fun! Renee: How long have you been on the podcast, Stephanie? Stephanie: Um...not very long but I think I like it. How long have you been in podcast? Renee: I'm not sure. I just started *laughs* Stephanie: Just started? Renee: Yeah. Stephanie: I wanna keep working on podcast! Renee: Me too! Stephanie: Sorry, I'm just stoked! I'm so sorry *laughter* Artbeat Radio was created in 2012 at the TAP II location in Gardena California. Brian: Here's a clip of our first podcast! *Dead Man's Bones cover plays softly behind voices* Alison: This was made in 2012. This was the first podcast of Artbeat Radio. it was posted on October 18th 2012. *Dead Man's Bones cover plays louder* *Song fades out* Stephanie: I thought it was awesome. The way that it was presented and the way that they were singing. Brian: I liked it! Alison: It was beautiful. I think the song was great considering it was our first one. On a soul level, why did I choose Mormonism? This is a question that Katie Jo shares that she had asked herself to understand some deeper truths.Navigating through mormonism as a child, then a youth and then later as a young mom Katie Jo says that because of her nature she had the belief that just because you say it, doesn't make it true. Through her journey she shares about her eating disorder that she had for over 20 years that led to utter rejection of self, the idea that she couldn't keep up and it continued to spiral her down with feelings of lack of self-worth. Through these emotions Katie Jo attempted to take her life and then connects with someone shortly afterwards and she becomes pregnant at 19 years old. She marry's the father and they make their way to the temple. Katie Jo shares that she really wanted to teach her only things about God that was love. The "sunbeam" type level of learning. God is love. Through this Katie Jo shares that she believes this assisted her own healing that God loved her and was helpful as she went through the loss of the death of her second child at only 18months old. After a few years, Katie Jo is a single mom to three kids and worked several jobs. One of them was as an artist. She was asked to paint a drum for someone and soon found herself being in the "woo woo" world - a place she had not known - and she was known as the drum lady. Katie Jo shares how the drum became such a healing gift to her and that the sound of the drum took her to spaces where she could truly heal. As Katie Jo has navigated some hardships in her life, especially the death of her child, she shares, "there is no getting through, there is only walking on.""Spirituality is a path of knowing you are one with the divine"This is a stunning episode!Katie Jo is creating a co-collaborative book called The Untold Stories of Motherhood. When Katie Jo Oberthaler interned at KMUW as a high school student, she says she never expected to end up on the air. More specifically, she never expected that songs she'd written would wind up on the airwaves at that very same station. But her new album, Pawn Shop Queen (recorded as Katie Jo), is changing that. The record, tracked in Long Beach, California, is already earning her critical acclaim and airplay. The record itself is deeply in tune with country music of a bygone era, adorned with pedal steel guitar and the singer's authoritative and authentic voice. In some ways, it harkens to the country music that came out of Los Angeles in the early '70s via bands such as The Flying Burrito Brothers or as heard on early albums from Jackson Browne and the Eagles. But there's something that goes even further back, into the music's rural roots. The lyrics are untouched by trappings of contemporary life: There are no references to heartbreak delivered via text message or old flames
Equally at home leading a slow dance or a blazing honky-tonk, Katie Jo talks about living out of her van during the pandemic, shooting a video at her childhood roller rink in Wichita, and the dual journeys that lead to the release of her album, "Pawn Shop Queen".
We are joined by Daniel Wu, BArch '97, whose work as an actor, director, and producer spans over 20 years and two continents. With over a quarter of a million Twitter followers and 9 million followers on the Chinese social media app Weibo, Daniel Wu is one of Asia's most recognizable actors. He has acted in over 40 films as well as in the AMC television series, "Into the Badlands". In mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, he has earned film awards for his acting and directing. Daniel currently lives in Oakland, California with his wife Lisa and daughter Raven. We talk about Daniel Wu's professional and personal journey from Eugene and the United States to Hong Kong and back again. We will discuss film, fun, multiculturalism, and martial arts as well as what Daniel has been doing to stay busy during the pandemic and his recent activism against acts of violence targeting Asian Americans. We met with Daniel on the occasion of the Chinese New Year in mid-February, when his activism was just getting started. Since then, he has contributed significantly to national conversations, making the hashtag #StopAsianHate among the most searched and used in recent weeks and prompting Google to launch its own campaign to raise awareness and show solidarity with the Asian and Asian American communities. Katie Jo brings us her insight and wisdom for sound healing, energy vibrations, and connection. We are beings made of energy, water, vibration, and frequency. When life hands us hell in a handbasket, we can become paralyzed. Fear, pain, grief, loneliness, and worry that things will never get better can bring our entire life to a halt. Sound therapy is a proven tool to help our brain relax into theta states of relaxation. The drum's sound is our first introduction to the rhythm when we hear our mother's heartbeat in the womb. Katie Jo reminds us that as we comfort our babies with pats on the back and their ears held tightly to our chest, we are creating this most basic form of sound that soothes a restless infant. As we grow and gain independence, we move away from the powerful healing sounds that have been a part of every human's beginning. The drum's sound is the heart's sound, a steady beat that can calm the storm when it's raging inside. In general, music has the power to lift our mood, calm our mind, make us spontaneously break into dance and movement, and form human connection and healing. Katie Jo is the owner of Sage Canvas, a beautiful space in Lehi, Utah. She offers drum circles, sound therapies, drum-making workshops, guided meditations, shamanic healing, and so many other soul supporting services. Our world seems to have gone mad. We are more divided now than ever. Our ability to connect with the entire planet of 7 billion humans through social media has opened pandora's box. We need to come together and work on the collective shadow that has become a raging storm. We feel bombarded with noise, confusion, and interference that lives within our unconscious being. We need to slow down and look around for those who are disconnected and suffering. We would benefit by sitting around the metaphoric campfire and beat our drums together as a tool to soothe so many wounded souls. Rhythm and sound are a universal language, and the earth that holds us so sweetly has a pulse and vibration, an ebb and flow that mirrors us. If we can find this deeper connection, plug it into the deeper syncopation surrounding us and slow down enough to feel it, we might just set foot on a healing journey. Katie Jo offers us such a grounded space and so many offerings that become a bridge for healing and connection. Learn more at https://www.hereisanewcreation.com It’s no secret that gun violence has been on the rise in the past years. Attacks on black churches, queer night clubs, and high schools, all make us ask: How do we stop the violence? How do we stand in solidarity with victims? What can we do? This year at the Wild Goose Festival, Shane Claiborne, renowned author and activist, joins us for a conversation addressing this topic. Drawing from years of experience working for prison reform, the abolition of the death penalty, and as a radical peacemaker, Shane will be bringing a powerful word that we can carry with us back to our communities. Shane Claiborne Shane Claiborne graduated from Eastern University and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. In 2010, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Eastern. His adventures have taken him from the streets of Calcutta where he worked with Mother Teresa to the wealthy suburbs of Chicago where he served at the influential mega-church Willow Creek. As a peacemaker, his journeys have taken him to some of the most troubled regions of the world – from Rwanda to the West Bank, Afghanistan and Iraq. Shane is a founder and board member of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped birth and connect radical faith communities around the world. He is married to Katie Jo, a North Carolina girl who also fell in love with the city (and with Shane). Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus. His books are translated into more than a dozen languages. Shane speaks over 100 times a year, nationally and internationally. www.thesimpleway.org
Episode 12 featuring Katie Jo Myers(@katiejo.myers) was a very important one! Sexism & sexual harassment are both severely delicate and very serious topics of discussion. Katie was brave enough to come on the show and share her experiences and thoughts on some of our listener's shared experiences, and help give us some insight into how to address and prevent this sort of thing within our community. Katie is such a kind and awesome person, and we really enjoyed having her on the show to share her thoughts. Please note that this is a very controversial topic, and we are not perfect. You may not agree 100% with everything that is said in today's episode, and that's ok! Keep in mind that we did not have time to say everything that should be said, and some things may not be phrased perfectly. We are not here to debate you, or to tell you that you're incorrect. This episode is intended to provide our personal perspectives on the issue, raise awareness, and to insight some productive conversation about something that should be talked about! Above all, we are here to agree that sexism and sexual harassment DO NOT belong in the rock climbing community. Thank you for supporting and listening!

And at this very moment, I wish I was out on a run. I don't remember the specifics of first time I met Katie Jo, but I “remember” the first time I met Katie Jo. You remember those first meeting moments when you meet someone like Katie who beams with energy, enthusiasm, warmth, and a spirit that wants to connect with whoever is right in front of them. I first met Katie at the window of a food truck like so many others in Fort Wayne, and was greeted with most genuine and proper greeting that care more about how I was doing that particular day than what hot dogs I wanted. The service industry requires engagement to be comfortable and successful, but there is a difference between being nice or having a friendly demeanor and being interested in your customers. I'm sure Katie had her “customers,” but she was more interested in connecting with her “people,” whether that was someone she was meeting for the first time or the person coming back for the third time that week. Katie gives everyone the opportunity to be seen and valued if they want it. We as customers get to choose how we're going to engage with those desiring to serve us as well, and if we're as interested in getting to know those that serve us, we'll find that we are surrounded by incredible people. What I love about Katie the most is that this isn't just a “strategy” to be successful in the service industry, it is is an all-in attitude that she has to choose every day like anyone else when it comes to owning our best selves and creating the environment in our world that we desperately want to see be the norm. Katie is no doubt wired to be more outgoing or engaging than others and much of her efforts are an outflow of who she is, but is a direct result of deep intentionality to work on herself so that what comes out is received as an expression of love and grace for others. I love seeing Katie's energy be received by so many. We all need to be “seen” daily by others, even if we're strangers. Katie does that for others and it's making a difference. Such a difference that she's developer own manta or brand if you will, called “Slinging Sunshine.” In this episode of Neighboring, we talk to Katie about her journey to where she's at, where Slinging Sunshine came from, and why it matters. In addition, we talk about the realities that no one is always on or perfect with our efforts, and how important it is to be authentic and surround yourselves off-line with personal relationships to recharge life with. Katie inspires me to spread more sunshine in my own life with those around me. As much as I need to be seen by people like the way Katie does, I need to do that as well and I'm doing my best to do lean into that area of personal development. If you know Katie or have been impacted by her sunshine, consider sending her a note via social media. Let's show some love the other way.
Katie is Fort Wayne famous for many reasons. Katie is known around town as the person “Slinging Sunshine” and spreading joy. Katie is someone you find at a lot of local events scooping people up who are strangers and transforming them into close friends. She cares for the people she interacts with in a really extraordinary way. Everyone that knows her feels the genuine love and care she has for them. She has a way of turning brief interactions she has with people into long-lasting feelings of gratitude and kindness. Katie looks after everyone around her. Are they well? Do they have what they need? Can she do anything for them? Do they realize how unique they are? Off the clock she makes a point to be a cheerleader, encouraging people to keep believing in themselves. Katie pours herself out to people and gives it all she’s got. She is transforming our community with each and every interaction she has with people.
""THE SCANDAL OF GRACE" With new eyes can we look at people we don’t even like and see the One we Love? Let’s imagine a revolution that is gentle and magnetic, a revolution big enough to set both the oppressed and the oppressors free. With hard stories from the streets of Philly and the warzone of Iraq, Shane will invite us to reflect on the scandal of God’s inclusive love… in a world that is starved for grace. There are also challenges (and gifts) when transitioning out of a corporate reality and moving into an entirely new career paradigm. She also offers valuable insight on how a person can live an authentic and spiritual life while operating in "the real world", including but not limited to corporate America. What spiritual tools and practices are available to us to bring more mindfulness and balance to our work lives? When is a work environ unhealthy or no longer for us? How can we deal with difficult or contrasting energies in our workplaces? What should empathic people know about working in organizations?
