Welcome to the 9th episode of the Resonate Podcast! We are excited to share this thought-provoking and important conversation about the journey of the “middle years” with our pre-teens and teens as a parent! Our guest, Rachelle Garcia Seliga, is a mother, wife and midwife who is midwifing a cultural shift through her teachings. She has a deep affinity for the postpartum period and has apprenticed with 17 home birth midwives in Mexico and the US but was surprised to find a void in the teen years transition. Rachelle highlights how meeting our teens' “full spectrum of their emotionality” often requires us as parents to really grow up and examine our capacity to be with the full range of human experience without judging ourselves. These years are an opportunity to ‘step back in' and re-do what we couldn't support in our kids when they were younger. She asks, ‘What is innate within us?' We access the blueprint and map by going within and sourcing personal authority. “This is how we create a living culture!” Rachelle has been greatly influenced by her ‘spiritual adoption' in her 20s. Her ‘Godparents ushered her through young adulthood, and this ceremonial path brought her to where she is now. She now teaches through Innate Traditions, and her work centres around unifying principles, honouring innate wisdom primarily through maternal health and postpartum care. You can find her work here or follow her on Instagram @innatetraditions. This conversation can help anchor you if you're in the throes of the teen years or offer you rich insight no matter where you are in the parenting journey! Enjoy! Today's episode is with Klyne Love, who shares generously about her experience with single motherhood throughout floods, housing crises and a lot of grief. Despite being a heavy topic, Klyne has a spirit of hope and optimism and holds a beautiful vision of a more mother-centred world, reflected in the work she does with mothers. Single motherhood has taught Klyne so much about herself, about care, community, wellbeing and complex social and cultural issues relating to how we look after each other, and how we don't. Klyne's story is so important, for all of us who wish to know how to support single mother's better, and for single mothers to know they are not alone in many of the common struggles faced when mothering without support. Klyne is a radical advocate for Mother-centred care and feminine embodiment. She works in postpartum education and care, having completed trainings with Julia Jones from Newborn Mothers, Sophie Ward Koren from Milk & Seed and Rachelle Garcia Seliga from Innate Traditions. She is also a Qoya teacher and ultimately these two threads weave together as sacred spaces for women to connect deeply to themselves and access their intuitive Knowing and self-healing. How do we manifest a blissful, orgasmic birth? It involves targetting your limiting beliefs and looking more deeply into our minds and bodies. Today's episode features Gina Ojeda, who will be sharing her powerful personal experience of a blissful birth. Listen in and explore the topic of pleasure, as it is one of the most important factors for a joyful and peaceful experience during and after birth. Gina Ojeda is a mother, spouse, home keeper, crafter, and lover of nature. She is a Certified Birth Doula through Small Wonders Childbirth, a Certified Lactation Counselor through the Healthy Children Project, and a Postpartum Care Provider through Innate Traditions. Gina has a passion for supporting women in their journey of creating and birthing life. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist of 7 years, specializing in pregnancy and postpartum massage, and a Certified Yoga Teacher of 8 years, specializing in prenatal yoga and yoga for youth with a mission to educate, inspire & empower women in their childbearing years In this episode: Gina shares her childhood experiences of alcoholism, physical abuse, and trauma that led to her seeking spirituality and healing. She chose to have her daughter in a hospital and experienced pain during labor due to her body's natural instinct to bear down but was instructed to lie down instead. Gina discusses her journey to becoming interested in childbirth and traditional postpartum care and meeting a mentor who introduced her to postpartum care. She begins studying traditional childbirth practices, including hypnosis and visualization, in preparation for her home birth. Being surrounded with so much support and care induces the flow of oxytocin - the ‘feel good' hormone. Home births allow freedom of one's body in contrast to hospital birth, where the doctors and nurses must constantly monitor the mother. Watching the documentary "Orgasmic Birth" allows viewers to see a larger community of women experiencing similar natural and empowering births. It is important to honor our own birthing experiences and realize the power of self-care and self-love to help us heal from past trauma. Gina shares her story of how she overcame fears around childbirth and became more orgasmic during and after pregnancy Our mindset and brain rewiring approach to pleasure in birth matters in the experience of childbirth - realize the power of manifestation. Key Takeaways: Focusing on our physiology and spirituality can help us with healing trauma Much preparation and education are required for holistic childbirth Connecting with your sexual energy allows you for new experiences Feeling blissful during labor is possible with the presence of oxytocin Manifesting an orgasmic birth is empowering and allows for peace of mind Rewiring one's brain may be done through meditation and practicing affirmations Realize the power of the brain and manifest a blissful birthing experience Tweetable Quotes: “The point of having a home birth is to be at home, go into labor at home, and feel safe and secure.” - Gina Ojeda “Our mind is so powerful, and we literally are the creators of our reality… Reprogramming of the brain is so essential because we are taught that birth is painful and that there's so much to fear… It's just embedded in the collective consciousness… Know [that] it's possible to have an orgasmic, blissful, and ecstatic birth.” - Gina Ojeda Connect with Gina Ojeda! This week's topic is one we just do not speak enough about! And I'm thrilled that I get to speak to Genevieve Putter about it. Postpartum doula, coach and content creator, Genevieve Putter, is on a mission… Since becoming a mother in 2016, her life's purpose has become to spread education around mother-centred care. She's also the face behind the brand New Normal, with a loyal Instagram following and in-person and digital support groups, and co-created an ante-natal workshop called Oh Baby. She is a certified Postpartum Doula with Wombs South Africa, as well as a Postpartum Care Provider with the international organization, Innate Traditions. She also writes for various publications and online portals as #thedigitaldoula, with her most recent position as an online coach for Lil-lets South Africa's, Lil-lets Talk maternity programme. After the birth of her son, Genevieve was severely unprepared for her journey into matrescence. After an emergency C-section, the first time mom had no idea that the coming months of navigating life with a newborn would change her life fundamentally. Genevieve helps me understand just how difficult birth can be and how unsupported women often are in this transitional process, and speaks about birth trauma and its nuance within the South African private healthcare system as a mother who experienced it as well as a postpartum doula whose many clients do too. Postpartum has it all - depression, anxiety, rage, joy, fear, love, frustration, happiness, grief... yep it's the full spectrum of emotions, sometimes all in one day. We hear about it sometimes, whispers of mental health struggles, but like the rest of the mental health world, it's not talked about openly. So how the heck do we deal with that? How do we know if we're okay? How do we ask for help? That's what I talked about with maternal mental health counselor, and new mom herself, Mary Sanker. How can we navigate this postpartum period and still feel like ourselves? How do we find support when the world we live in offers no village? Mary teaches us how to make subtle shifts by slowing down, taking stock, and moving towards what feels true to you. The first steps are not sweeping life changes, it's just doing the one small thing that's next. Listening to your body, letting go of unrealistic expectations of what you "should" be doing, and do what feels true. That's the beginning of your path.We also talk about the scary stuff, the times when it's more than "just the baby blues"... and Mary shares the most beautiful insight into what's actually going on in someone's brain when their minds are consumed with harmful thoughts. Her message to postpartum people: you're a mother, not a martyr - you do not have to continually abandon yourself for some productivity output, or unspoken expectation that isn't serving you or your child. We cannot talk about collective health, planetary health, or the health of future generations, without talking about the health of mothers. As Rachelle says, “The dysfunction and disharmony within our human environments is manifesting through the vulnerable bodies of postpartum women. In fact it is through the bodies of mothers that humanity is being alerted to the urgency of our collective need for change.” IN THE INTRO: The reaction to my previous episode on parenting without a village IN THE INTERVIEW: Our culture is set up to fail new families/parents, and pathologizing the postpartum period overlooks the fact that it’s our social structures that are the cause of the immense emotional and psychological pain most postpartum mothers feel Mama- it’s not your fault New moms lose up to 700 hours of sleep during the first postpartum year The baseline of normal is that human babies need care 24/7 (your baby is not “high needs”), what’s not normal is living in isolated nuclear families Postpartum care cannot happen without community, and community is the one thing we are all lacking Why it’s so hard, when it’s what we all deeply crave, to recreate the community living of our ancestors/how the colonial mindset keeps us mired in separation and distrust The pelvis as the seat of trauma for most every woman, and how we can begin to heal that How we feel in our pelvis is how we feel in our life- the connection between mental and pelvic health Intergenerational trauma and clearing the “bad medicine” that was embedded in the bodies of our female ancestors and passed down to us Anchoring in what we actually believe about ourselves, our bodies, this life Women are, and deeply feel, unsafe in our culture The incredible responsibility of raising girls (and boys tho!) in this culture, and how Rachelle and I navigate talking to them about the realities of patriarchy in an age appropriate way Teaching our kids to respect their inner authority first and foremost Reproductive and environmental justice are one and the same It’s time to grow up and do the work- our primary responsibility as adults on this planet at this time is to caretake life One simple way we can create community and support the parents of little ones If we can’t be resourced horizontally (by the folks around us), we can be resourced vertically (by our well ancestors) and by the land The sacrifices we make as mothers are a holy offering to life itself LINKS: The Innate Traditions website Innate Traditions on Instagram Medicine Stories Patreon (podcast bonuses!) Rachelle Garcia Seliga, founder of Innate Traditions, http://www.innatetraditions.com/ancestral-grief/, shares: What is ancestral grief and how is it showing up postpartum Defining and finding community support as if your life depends on it, because it does How she found her life partner New forms, new paradigms, and new models in partnership and business Her personal story of financial health and transformation, how financial need and breadwinning has not allowed her to hide, and insisted she give her gifts.
Rachelle Garcia Seliga's work is dedicated to midwifing a cultural shift- based upon our innate wisdom, personal authority and the sacredness of Life. Working in the field of traditional midwifery care for the past 15 years, Rachelle's work as a ‘midwife’ embraces the original meaning of this word, which is caretaker of women’s health from ‘womb to tomb.’ ‘Innate’ is that which is natural and inherent. ‘Traditions’ are those teachings that are passed down from one generation to the next. Our innate physiological design offers us a map to health and wellness. We THRIVE when we follow that which has been laid out for us. Traditional medicinal knowledge is stored within our blood memory, within the Earth, Air, Water and Fire. The more we heal ourselves from the destructive programming we have received, the more -access- we have to this knowledge. It is from these understandings that ‘Innate Traditions’ was born. All of Rachelle's work is dedicated to this Remembrance. Rachelle runs a Holistic Well-Woman Care practice, which tends to the health of our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. I have been drawn to Rachelle's work as I feel she has a strong gift at articulating and giving language to these important topics, in turn helping us turn inner knowing into understanding and inspire cultural change through action and embodiment. We discuss: The traditional wisdom of postpartum care and the importance to reconnect to these practices within the current modern yet dis-functional context. Ancestral grief, the subsequent disconnection from each other, the world we a a part of, the complexities of healing and crucial need to do so The inherent physiology underlying Rachelle's work, teachings and postpartum care overall. How understanding this allows us to be informed to better nurture Mothers and therefore babies, children and communities at large. The remembrance that while we may feel and act disconnected, we can never actually be disconnected from that which we are inherently a part of. Rachelle has a Webinar on Ancestral Grief & Ancestral Healing 14th April, MST, that will be 15th April AEST but if you sign up you will receive a recording available for 72hours after webinar. In this episode of Birth Kweens, Care Messer shares about her journey to becoming a mom, a path that included struggles with infertility, adoption, having an unmedicated birth center birth, and eventually becoming a birth worker herself. Care is the founder of The Birth Education Center in San Diego, CA. When Care discovered HypnoBirthing for the birth of her daughter in 2008, it changed her life’s path. Care believes that babies can experience a birth day that is magical, loving, and gentle. When families are educated to resolve fears, birth becomes a beautiful positive experience. Care continued on to become a DONA Doula under the instruction of Gerri Ryan and became a Certified HypnoBirthing Instructor. From there, Care started her own business, San Diego HypnoBirthing where she has been educating families since 2009. She is a NATH Hypnotherapist, a Certified Placenta Encapsulationist, an ICEA-trained Childbirth Educator, a CAPPA-trained Post-partum Doula, and an Innate Traditions-trained Post-partum Doula. Care is certified as a Professional Cuddler and Cuddle Facilitator through Cuddle Sanctuary in Los Angeles and through Cuddlist.com. Until recently Care served as the Director of Cap Wellness Center. She is a mentor and educator for doulas across San Diego County in Professional Doula Classes created for the Birth Education Center. She has also trained students nurses at SDSU and held nurse trainings in local hospitals. She is a Board member at The Nizhoni Institute for Midwifery and served as Vice President of San Diego Birth Network. Here’s an overview of what Care shares about in this episode: A bit about her family background… what it was like to grow up in a big family with hopes of having the same and then be faced with infertility Her struggles with repeated miscarriages (6 in total) and the impact that they had on her physical, mental, and emotional health How Care’s oldest daughter Angie came into their family at 5 years old via adoption Getting pregnant for the 7thtime and how that baby (a little girl that would be named Finley) became the first and only one that Care was able to carry to term The role that getting diagnosed with and treated for MTHFR had on Care’s ability to carry Finley to term Care’s struggle to connect with Finley while she was pregnant because of all the miscarriages and how that experience has informed her understanding of trauma How Care went from wanting a completely medicated birth “with ALL of the drugs” to being an avid student of Hypnobirthing who switched to a birth center and midwifery care. What Care’s labor and birth with Finley was like – a waterbirth in a birth center followed by an unexpected postpartum hospital transfer for the baby Coming to learn, a few hours after she was born, that Finley was very sick and eventually being told that she wouldn’t make it What it was like for Care to cope with Finley’s terminal diagnosis, especially after already experiencing so much loss How Finley beat all the odds and survived despite her severe birth injury What life is like for Care and her family today, including how Finley is doing Care’s current role as a birth worker and the impact that her own beautifully unique and challenging birth experience has had on how she supports other families in their childbearing years The importance of connection when it comes to birth and what it looks like to connect with your baby and your partner(s) throughout pregnancy and birth Some helpful tips on how to work through fears and past traumas related to/stemming from birth Some info about using birth story medicine and therapies like EMDR to work through birth trauma --- If you liked this episode of the Birth Kweens Podcast, tell your friends!
