This week, I have an emotional chat with director NATALIE RAE about her beautiful, award-winning NETFLIX documentary, "DAUGHTERS," which won two awards at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, was shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars, and is now up for a Peabody. Listen as Natalie tells me about the 8 long years it took her and co-director ANGELA PATTON to make "Daughters" and what it felt like to finally get into Sundance and then sell the project to Netflix after hearing "no" so many times. Find out how Natalie's music video background inspired and influenced her to mix camera formats and develop a unique look to the film. "Daughters" chronicles how a group of young girls and their incarcerated fathers prepare for and then attend a "daddy-daughter-dance." Because these fathers almost never see their daughters, this singular event is incredibly special for all involved. Check out the Daughters Trailer and watch the film now only on Netflix. Plus, I give you my take on the "White Lotus" season finale. "The Coconut Milk was off." And I share some footage from my trip to the LA "Fighting Oligarchy" rally. It's the What Ya' Got Cookin'? Thanksgiving edition, a beloved tradition here on Midday, going all the way back to 2016. Tom talks with John Shields, owner of Gertrude's at the Baltimore Museum of Art and Damian Mosely of Blacksauce Kitchen. The two chefs talk with Tom and the Midday callers about cooking tips and food faux pas for folks preparing tomorrow's big meal. We also get a special check-in from Tom's mom, Rosemary Hall.   Jo-Jo's Curried Crab Dip (Gertrude's Recipe) Ingredients (8 servings): 1/2 cup of Dried currants 1 lb of Cream cheese 2 tbsp of Madras Curry Powder 2 tbsp of Mayonnaise 1/3 cup of Coconut Milk 1/3 cup of Minced green onions or chives 1/3 cup of finely diced Red bell pepper 1 lb of Lump or Claw Crab meat 1 pack of Melba rounds, Water crackers or Ginger snaps.   Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small bowl place the currants and just enough water to cover. Let stand for 15 minutes. Drain, but reserve 2 tablespoons of liquid, and put the currants aside.  In a large bowl combine the cream cheese, curry powder, mayonnaise, coconut milk, green onion, and red bell pepper. Beat until smooth and somewhat creamy. Mix in the crabmeat, currants, and 2 tablespoons of the reserved currant liquid.  Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Serve hot or warm with Melba rounds, Water crackers, or Ginger snaps.   Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie (Gertrude's Recipe) Ingredients (1-9 Inch Pie): 1 Pie Crust 3 Eggs 1/2 cup of Sugar 1/2 cup of Brown sugar 1 cup of Karo syrup 2 tsp of Vanilla extract 1/2 cup of Melted butter 2 tsp of Flour 2 oz of Unsweetened chocolate, melted 1 1/2 oz of Semi-sweetened chocolate, melted 1/4 cup of Locally distilled bourbon 1 1/2 cup of Pecan pieces (per pie)   Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cream eggs and sugar together. Stir in the Karo syrup, vanilla, butter, and flour, Mix well. Add chocolate and bourbon. Spread pecan pieces around the bottom of each pie crust. Pour in filling and gently mix into the nuts. Bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until puffy and set. Cool and serve.   Rosemary Hall's Fresh Cranberry Relish Tom's Mom makes this delicious cranberry concoction, which Tom and his Mom first learned from James Porterfield, a friend in Ithaca, NY. Ingredients: 1lb Cranberries 1/2 cup of White granulated sugar (Tom uses 1/4 of a cup) 1/2 cup of Firmly packed brown sugar (Tom uses 1/4 of a cup) 1 cup of water   Directions: Grab a pot and bring the cranberries and sugar to a boil and cook for 10 minutes. When cool, mix in: 2 tbsp of Horseradish 2 tbsp of Dijon mustard Serve over Cream cheese as an Appetizer, or eat it as a side with Turkey, Chicken, or Pork.   Sweet Potato Biscuits (Blacksauce Recipe) Ingredients: 4.75 lbs of All-purpose flour 7 tbsp of Baking powder 4 tbsp of Sugar 2 tsp of Salt 1.75 lb of Cold butter, cut into parts 1 lb of a Peeled Sweet potato 64 oz of Buttermilk 2 oz of Heavy cream 2 tbsp of Turbinado sugar   Directions: Preheat convection oven to 400°F. (if you're using a conventional oven, then 425°F). Line two half-size sheet pans with parchment paper. Measure dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt) into a stainless steel bowl. Using a knife and sanitized cutting board, cut the butter into 1-ounce cubes. In small batches, pulse the flour mixture and butter in the bowl of a food processor until the mixture resembles a coarse cornmeal. Return mixture to stainless steel bowl. Add roasted sweet potato to the food processor; pulse in the buttermilk. Make a well in the center of the flour & butter mixture; using a stainless steel spoon, fold in sweet potato buttermilk mixture just until the dough comes together. Turn out the biscuit dough onto dry, lightly floured work table; bring together and knead twice. Flatten the mound of dough, with hands or rolling pin, to two inches in height. Cut biscuits using 2” biscuit cutter, and place next to each other on sheet pan. Bake for 9 minutes in full size electric convection oven Remove biscuits from the oven and, working quickly, brush the tops with heavy cream and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Return to the oven and bake for 9 more minutes in full size electric convection oven. Remove pans from oven and place onto bun rack to cool.   Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

The Beracha for Coconut Milk and Fruit Juices

Many vacation spots such as Florida and the islands serve coconut milk. What is the proper Beracha that one should recite before drinking coconut milk? Although on cow's milk one recites "Shehakol," perhaps coconut milk should require the Beracha of "Boreh Peri Ha'etz," as it is grown on trees. The Ben Ish Hai (Rabbi Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) addresses this question in Parashat Pinhas (Shana Rishona, 9). (Interestingly, he refers to the coconut as "guz il hind" – "the Indian nut.") He notes that a basic rule in Halacha requires reciting the Beracha of "She'hakol" over all fruit juices, even if the fruit tree was planted specifically for the purpose of extracting juice. The only fruit juices which Halacha treats like the fruit itself are grape juice and olive oil. (See Shulhan Aruch, Orah Haim 208.) All other juices are looked upon as "Ze'a" – secretions of the fruit, and not as the fruit itself. Hence, one who drinks coconut milk recites the Beracha of "She'hakol Nihya Bi'dbaro," and not "Boreh Peri Ha'etz." This applies to all other fruit juices, as well. With the exception of wine and grape juice, over which one recites "Boreh Peri Ha'gefen," all other fruit juices – including apple juice, orange juice and grapefruit juice – require the Beracha of "She'hakol." Once again, this applies even if the fruit trees were planted for the specific purpose of producing juice. Thus, even though many Florida orange groves are planted especially for making orange juice, the Beracha over this juice would be "She'hakol," and not "Boreh Peri Ha'etz."Summary: One who drinks coconut milk recites the Beracha of "She'hakol," just as one does over all fruit juices, with the exception of wine and grape juice, which of course require "Ha'gefen."

We're happy to welcome back the popular, Jessica Hegarty, to the podcast! Jess and Rip did this Facebook live event a few weeks ago and the response was so powerful, we wanted to share it with all of you. Jess is the Director of Food Development and Strategy around all of our PLANTSTRONG food lines. She's the one who researches every new product and ingredient we look at for our foods and if it doesn't pass her sniff test, it doesn't make it into the mix! Needless to say, we trust her implicitly and, if you've tasted our PLANTSTRONG foods, you know the rigorous taste and nutritional standards she holds us all to.  Today, Jess is here to talk coconuts. As you may know, we at PLANTSTRONG aren't huge fans of it because of the ridiculously high amount of saturated fat. Saturated fat isn't just detrimental to our arteries and endothelial cells, but it's also harmful to our brain health. In fact, it's pretty much the only whole plant food we just can't endorse and you'll hear exactly why. But, Jess doesn't just look under the hood of the coconut itself.  she also explores other popular coconut-based products: Coconut oils Coconut waters Coconut extract Coconut yogurts and milks Coconut flours Can any of these products be considered a plantstrong food? Are all the “supposed” health benefits just marketing hype? Is any of it worth our valuable dollar? She'll tell us and even provide some fun and healthy alternatives! Walmart has become the latest major retailer to drop a coconut milk brand after allegations of forced monkey labor surfaced.According to Axios, Walmart no longer sells Chaokoh products in stores and online, and the company's Sam's Club outlets are also no longer listing the product. Walmart joins other retailers including Target, Costco, Kroger and more in dropping the brand amid pressure from PETA.In 2019, PETA investigators in Asia surfaced several instances in Thailand of a coconut supplier using chained-up monkeys to pick the fruit for major Thailand-based brands like Chaokoh. A follow-up investigation the next year found that many farms were still using monkey labor as well as operating monkey schools and running coconut-picking competitions with the animals.PETA's campaign to get retailers to pull Chaokoh products from shelves has gathered more than 95,000 supporters. The organization is still pushing to get 99 Ranch Market, an Asian supermarket chain with 54 stores across 10 states, to stop carrying the coconut milk brand. On its website, Chaokoh said it contracted a company to conduct a monkey-free coconut due diligence assessment in 2020. The company said the assessment, which involved site tours and personnel interviews, turned up no evidence of monkeys being used for coconut harvesting.Regardless, PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman said, "With one PETA exposé after another confirming cruelty on coconut farms, retailers are dropping Chaokoh left and right.”

I feel like we left out a lot of backstory in this podcast and there isn't a lot online to find out about Alex Baker.  Alex Baker is Cincinnati's hidden gem.  The first time I heard Alex sing at Bubba Budan's in Clifton Cincinnati I was blown away. We (Rosedale) were a little early to the venue and Alex was hanging out trying to get some free drinks, jamming a simple piano rendition of one of his new songs "T". We got talking and he offered to help load our gear into the venue and asked if he could open the show. Luckily I was in a position to make that happen as we were the only act playing that night (basically for tips). Also, a few people at the bar were already fans of his. Alex played a few songs on my acoustic and all 10 people in the room were into it. Afterwords, Alex helped load our gear out and told us about his old band; Dewey Decibel.  The next time I came through Cincinnati I searched high and low for Alex Baker. Eventually I reached him through a friend of a friend and asked if he'd like to open my next show- another stellar performance! We hung out afterward and he told me his story of getting arrested and going to jail. He was assaulted pretty brutally by the cops and was at a low point of his life when he got out. Then the third time I came through with Virginia Beach's Zawacki Brothers, we had a couple days off so I offered to record some songs for Alex. We crammed my recording gear and blankets into his 100 square-foot apartment and recorded the 11 songs that make up January Blues onto my laptop in just one 14 hour day. I took the sessions on the road with me and finished up all the production in different venues and in the van with the Zawaki Brothers (Brian Zawacki actually tracked the Bass-cello at a DIY art venue in St.Louis for the track Windy Nebraska). January Blues was an interesting passion project where I could take Alex's catchy folk songs, make any structual changes I found necessary, and add however much production I wanted. Alex is so easy going and down for whatever. He's very appreciative for the help and is a great friend. People from all over ask me about Alex quite a bit. They love his music and enjoy helping him out. A couple years after January Blues came out Alex finally put together a band called Coconut Milk with some local Cincinnati musicians. They recorded some more of Alex's songs, sold a bunch of CDs around town, and won a contest to open for Jimmy Eat World that they didn't even submit for! (Taylor Helm from Gloucester submitted them!)  It is pretty amazing how just turning your most painful, raw emotions into beautiful art can create so many great opportunities, friends, and repair a lot of damage. Alex has been a big inspiration. His talent really motivates me to put my phone away and get to work on my songs and music...I guess, in a content creating way, I feel a little like the dog rescuer that clames 'the rescue dog rescued me'. https://alexanderbaker.bandcamp.com/ Live music: "T" (available on Bandcamp) by Alex Baker and "Popular" (available soon) by Alex Baker Intro/Outro Music:  “Do It All Again” by Rosedale Produced, Edited, Animations, and graphics by: Mike Liorti Get 15% off your Vocal Eze order by using this link: http://vocaleze.refr.cc/mikeliorti --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stateofmyart/support
