This week for City Scenes we have reached the letter P we're in Perth Australia. An unexpected goldmine of alternative, indie and psychedelic rock music. Perth or Boorloo as it is known in the indigenous Nyungar language is a city on the west coast of Australia and capital of the state of Western Australia. With a population of 2.1 million it is the fourth most populous city in Australia and is known for it's relaxed vibe, beach lifestyle and, as we'll see a very active music and arts scene. Interestingly its position on the west coast of australia makes it one of the most isolated large cities in the world with Adelaide being the nearest big city at over a 28 hour drive away. In this episode we hear a couple of great bands from Perth's past and then focus on the prolific ensemble of musicians and their side projects that revolves around the members of bands like Tame Impala and Pond who were responsible for a whole wave of psych rock revival in Australia in the 2010s. The Triffids formed in 1978 and received big success in the 1980s and are known as one of Australia's most loved Post-punk bands from that period. Perth has always maintained a reputation as a hotspot for alternative rock and in the 90s a new band on the scene called Jebediah, took Australia by storm when their debut hit Jerks of Attention gained massive radio play on the influential alternative radio station Triple J. A particularly fertile moment in the music history of Perth came about in 2008 with the appearance of a couple of new bands on the scene called Tame Impala and Pond. Both of these bands shared members with Tame Impala focused around the psychedelic songwriting of frontman Kevin Parker and Pond being more of a collaborative project between the musicians Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson and Joe Ryan all of whom at one point all played in Tame impala. These days Australia is known for its psych rock scene with bands like the lazy Eyes, King Gizzard and the lizard wizard and Jagwar Ma all finding worldwide success but it wouldnt be an understatement to say that all of this was catalyzed in some way with the emergence of Tame Impala in 2008. Since then Tame Impala have released 4 albums, found huge success all over the world and these days Tame Impala sell out stadiums and Kevin parker is a producer to the stars, collaborating with the likes of Mark Ronson and Diana Ross. Another band that have gaiend a huge following and who are intrinsically linked to Tame Impala is Pond who started making music at the same time and some of which's members have played in Tame Impala as Kevin Parker's backing band. Perth's music scene is particularly active and exciting but in the early 2010s, as Tame impala and Pond were beginning to gain recognition and tour internationally it must have been a particularly inspiring time to be making music in the city. Other bands to have emerged from this group of musicians include The Growl and Gum, the solo project of Jay Watson who is both the guitarist of Pond and has played both drums, and keyboard in Tame impala.
No one wins in a break-up. Even if you're the executioner fully prepared to drop the guillotine's blade, there is always some level of disappointment that comes with unrealized expectations. And when your trusted partner finds themself incapable of ending a relationship in a personal way, opting instead for the path of least confrontation, the empty void can be tough to fill. When love and infatuation are fresh, the deluge of heart pumped blood gushes through the veins in fantastic fervor. But over time the annoyances and frustrations build to supersede your irrationalized ability to rationalize your incompatibility, and the ending can feel like being stranded on the moon. You hate hurting and you hate getting hurt. No one wins. There's a band called Trampled By Turtles, a name that depicts a sluggish, miserable death. The name of this band is obviously absurd, but it does kind of align with what it's like when someone doesn't have the guts to respect your heart by informing you in person that you'll no longer be sharing meals and family. You're suddenly thrust into the piercing realization that you may never speak to this person again, and the venom dilutes like a slow, melting glacier. Thousands of turtles crawl over you, crushing your lungs into suffocation. It's similar to waking up in the morning, opening your phone and reading the breaking news that agonizingly details your new, invalidated life. The bed becomes the enemy as the mocking clock and barren silence create a personal prison that turns your bones into bars to the jail cell that is your mind, body and soul. You obsess over how it went down. “Siri, play Jagwar Ma on Spotify. Oh, and break up with Mike.” There are no emotions, only emojis. Thank God for Cannabis.

We had the privilege of having a good old chinwag with Jagwar Ma founder, video artist, producer and movie scorer Jono Ma. We discuss the story of their early explosion onto the scene and getting signed, the early days of the band, Len Lye, meeting Andrew Weatherall and what happens when a musician starts fucking hating music! We find out the current status of the band and get a glimpse into the scene he's starting in Byron Bay. And greyhound racing, plenty of talk about greyhound racing! Even if you don't know the band that well, it's an interesting insight into what makes one of Australia's most creative musicians tick.
Jagwar who? It's Australia week so it's time for us to cover one of our favourite Australian bands Jagwar Ma and their insane debut album, Howlin. It's dance, it's rock, it's soul, it's Madchester, it's awesome. We discuss how the band turned from a side project into a hugely blog-hyped viral sensation and put together the pieces of their history, go through each track and find out what happened post release. We'll follow this episode up with our interview from Jagwar Ma head honcho Jono Ma next.
This week The Album Club is repping our little corner of the world because we haven't "gone local" since we discussed The Avalanches in Season 1. However, we chose not go for the obvious old school big fish such as ACDC, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, or The Saints (there'll be time for all of those, friends!) or even the more contemporary bright lights such as Tame Impala, Jagwar Ma or Courtney Barnett (these too. Boy, are we gonna be busy!). Instead, we thought we'd fly the flag for one of Australia's rock legends: Rowland S Howard. Founding member of the Birthday Party and noise guitarist extraordinaire,it's hard to imagine someone not only keeping up with but, in many ways, outshining the aforementioned Mr. Cave. There's a special place in our hearts for interesting rock stars here at The Album Clubhouse and you just have to Google Rowland, or better yet, fire up the ol' YouTube and watch the man set a figurative fire to his instrument to see where we're coming from. All jangley, steel scratching, shrapnel wielding maelstrom. Sadly, Howard's life was strewn with struggles with addiction and retreated into relative obscurity for a while before his untimely death, but not before surprising many with not one but two fantastic comeback albums earlier this decade; arguably his best work. If you aren't familiar with his god tier caterwauling and and pained howl, you're in for a treat. We give the low down on his origins, his larger than life stage presence, the confoundingly unique approach to guitar playing, and the making of this record, before plunging into the track by track and concluding with a what happened next while the wash of feedback still rings in our ears. Always honest, sometimes troubled, sorrowful but never bitter, Rowland was a total Rock'n'Roll legend. Ben, Andrew and Alex approve.
Jagwars! A fantastic time hanging out with Jono, Gabriel and Jack of Jagwar Ma! We get in touch with their roots, side projects, moving to Lisbon, changing song names – and posttraumatic stress disorder. On the podcast version, thoughts on Jinder Mahal.
