“Manel Carpineiro” é um conto de Lima Barreto (1881-1922) que mostra a face do trabalho, em um lado oposto da cidade, com o olhar do conhecedor dos subúrbios. Na história, a partir da Estrada Real de Santa Cruz, vamos conhecer personas como o carvoeiro Tutu, a prostituta que colhe flores silvestres, os tropeiros, o açougueiro que hoje é leiteiro, o Parafuso, domador de cavalos, e os carpineiros dos carros de bois, como o Manel Carpineiro, que é português e sente saudades do caldo de unto e das lutas de varapau de Portugal. Ele possui dois bois, Estrela e Moreno: “eles são o meu pão”, diz. O trágico destino do nosso protagonista, aos olhos de Lima, pode ser uma crítica sutil à colonização. Mas também não deixa de ser uma versão real de tantas histórias naturalistas e nacionalistas, de quem “não tinha nada e perdeu tudo”. Note que todos eles têm como ponto de encontro para as “boas pingas do caminho”, o Armazém Duas Américas, metáfora para as duas faces do Rio de Janeiro: a afrancesada cidade; e a brutalidade do campo. Há denúncia contra a falta de segurança pública, pois há de se precaver até contra o roubo de feixes de capim. Diante de todos esses trabalhadores, tratados também como “vagabundos rurais”, está uma grande ironia da pequena história, pois os carvoeiros e carpineiros eram fundamentais para o funcionamento da capital.
