Twenty-five years ago, Dave Parkin opened Blackbird Sound Studio in Perth, Western Australia, an independent recording studio that he own's and manages. Since then, he's been working in the music industry, picking up awards along the way—including 14 WAMI Producer of the Year wins and an ARIA-winning song—plus a handful of nominations. Dave's had numerous songs chart in the ARIA rankings and a few tracks in the Triple J Hottest 100, with one reaching #2 and several others making the top 10.Beyond the accolades, one of the most rewarding parts of his career has been working closely with bands such as Jebediah, South Summit, Old Mervs, Great Gable, and Spacey Jane, to name a few, on song structure, arrangement, and helping shape their sound. He's had the privilege of contributing to the launch of many successful artists, both independent and signed to record labels, guiding them through the creative process and bringing their music to life.Despite all that, Dave has kept a pretty low-key online presence and hasn't relied much on advertising— he's always preferred to let the music speak for itself, and people find him through the work he's done. More than anything, Dave loves what he does and feels lucky to have built a career around it. These days, he's found a better balance between work and family, trading the long, late hours of his 20s for a more sustainable routine. Making music is still his passion, but so is spending time with his wife and kids.IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:Getting started with running a studioHow to find good bands to trust you with working on their musicBeing open to experimentationDealing with impostor syndromeHow to create clarity with effectsAutomating effects during the tracking stageWhen to use reverb vs. delayCreating movement in a mix through sidechained effectsDistorting drumsHis trick for tracking big, fat snare soundsTo learn more about Dave Parkin, visit: http://www.blackbirdstudio.com.au/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Want more Mixing or Mastering clients? In this exciting episode of the Wise_N_Nerdy podcast, Charles, Joe, and Kurt are joined by the ever-creative JHammondC from Beyond the Playlist and Soundography. The episode kicks off with the hosts tackling the question of the week: “What has been the most influential movie of your life?” This sparks a heartfelt discussion about the films that have shaped their perspectives. Cousin Mike calls in to share his love for Treasure Planet, explaining how it inspired him to pursue his dreams. Joe reflects on how Tron ignited his passion for computers, while JHammondC credits The Amazing Mr. Blunden for changing how he views the world. Kurt talks about 12 Angry Men and how it challenged his preconceived notions, while Charles celebrates The Matrix as a major influence on his life. Next, the dice roll lands on the “Council of Dads” segment, sparking a lively debate about what kind of punishments schools should be allowed to enforce. The conversation is both insightful and passionate, with each host bringing their perspective to the table. The laughter ramps up with a round of bad dad jokes, starting with a clip of Joe telling Jebediah a classic groaner, followed by more jokes from Devocite that leave everyone chuckling. The fates then lead to the “How do I...?” segment, where the group shares hilarious stories about the various ways they mess with their friends and family—sarcasm being the go-to method. In the “What are you Nerding out about?” segment, Joe dives into Oshi No Ko season 2, though the rest of the crew isn't sold on it. Charles geeks out over the newest Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom, while Kurt showcases his obsession with 3D printing lithophanes, even sharing some of his favorite pieces. JHammondC wraps it up by sharing his New Year's resolution tradition, which this year involves honing his drawing skills by creating a new piece of art daily. The show also features a Spotify comment from Broesches and another sneaky bad dad joke from Devocite, keeping the laughter going. Finally, Charles closes out the episode with a story in the “Daddy tell me a story” segment, where he reveals some strange but necessary company policies he's had to create at his EMT business due to a few bad actors. "Usually we do a month here, but this is the quickest little thing we've done in a long time."We mention the Hotter Than Hell line up and the fact it almost has a Warped Tour kind of vibe about it."It does," he nodded. It does have that old feel to it."In the full interview Scotty talks more about Hotter Than Hell, playing with other bands like Regurgitator, Less Than Jake, Jebediah, and The Bennies, playing their Black album in full and problems that come with doing something like that, their own headlining shows and how they will be different to the festival shows, what to expect from Unwritten Law live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Kevin Mitchell takes us on a nostalgic journey, reflecting on Jebediah's evolution since their formation in 1994 in Perth, WA. As the band approaches its 30th anniversary, Kevin opens up about the early days - the naivety, the thrill, and the drive that propelled them from local Perth stages to national acclaim. We explore the unique WA pride and how Jebediah paved the way for local bands, choosing to grow their roots in Australian soil instead of seeking fame overseas. This episode is more than a trip down memory lane; it's a celebration of Western Australia's burgeoning music scene. With bands like Spacey Jane and Tame Impala also hailing from Perth, we discuss the incredible growth of the music industry on Australia's West Coast over the last three decades.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Almost 20 years ago, Luke Steele emerged as one of the great modern eccentrics of Australian music. An ebullient personality (one was a spider, one was a bird), he started the decade as a scrappy underdog and ended it as one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Who else could get to that kind of A to B, from Jebediah to Jay-Z? With a new solo album looming, Luke spoke openly about his one-of-a-kind journey that took him from blues bars in Perth to the Hollywood Bowl and back again. Luke's debut solo album Listen to the Water is out May 13. With thanks to Mariam Dib and EMI Music Australia. Recorded by David James Young and Luke James Steele.
