Idora Park was much more than just the largest amusement park that ever existed in Oakland. Developed by real estate moguls who also owned a network of electric streetcars, this “mecca of pleasure seekers” played a significant role in the development of the East Bay, especially after the park sheltered thousands of refugees following San Francisco's devastating 1906 earthquake. Idora served as a showcase for cutting edge technological marvels, it helped launch the careers of several early Hollywood superstars, and it functioned as a vast testing ground for the emerging amusement industry until its closure in 1928. Nearly a century after Idora Park was bulldozed into history, curator Justin Limoges is resurrecting the memory of this mostly forgotten landmark through his upcoming “Idora Idora” exhibit*. In addition to showcasing historical materials, “Idora Idora” will explore the relationship between the amusement park and the very unique neighborhood that now exists in its footprint. In order to stimulate all the senses, Limoges has also commissioned an Idora-themed fragrance and an original song, performed by Greg Gardner with Jeremy Brown, Cass McCombs, and Ben Sigelman. [*The exhibit's site isn't live yet, but I'll post links on social media as soon as it's up.] Listen now to hear my conversation with Justin Limoges about what Idora Park's history can teach us about the evolution of amusement, collective memory, and the development of Oakland in the early 20th century. LA based musician, multi-instrumentalist and producer Chris Cohen has been involved in the forever changing and challenging music scene for nearly three decades now. Having participated in groups such as Deerhoof, The Curtains, Natural Dreamers, Cryptacize, as well as contributions to Cass McCombs and Weyes Blood albums, Coehn released his accalimed debut back in 2012 entitled "Overgrown Path" and has since gained great attention for his incredible process for songwriting and unique abilities to conjure up certain elements that make him the outstanding the musician he is. With much anticipation since the release of his self-titled album in 2019, Cohen has made an epic return with "Paint A Room" and we couldn't be more excited. Enjoy!
Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. This week on the program, we are pleased to welcome guest host Zara Hedderman and singer/songwriter Chris Cohen to the show to a generous, expansive, and genuine conversation. Cohen's new record is called Paint a Room. His fourth solo album—perhaps you know his work with Deerhoof, The Curtains, Cryptacize, Ariel Pink, Cass Mccombs, and Weyes Blood and more—it finds Cohen pairing with musical heavyweights like Jeff Parker and Josh Johnson, laying a sheen of ‘70s breeziness over top of Cohen's remarkable compositions. In this wide-ranging chat, they discuss the new album, years spent working in record stores, Transcendental Meditation, The Grateful Dead, and much more. It's an open and tender conversation, full of funny moments and deep insight. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Emily chats with Indianna Hale about her new album, Yesterday's Glitter, which is out now on Perpetual Doom. Indianna's co-producer Jason Cirimele also joins in on the chat and the two discuss their collaboration on this record, as well as their many additional musical projects. ------ Yesterday's Glitter, a new record from San Francisco's Indianna Hale features indie rock in the vein of Cate Le Bon, Faye Webster, and Cass McCombs and draws from 1950s torch-pop icons like Patsy Cline, the songs on Yesterday's Glitter come wrapped in A.M.-era gauze. It's classic Indianna Hale —the perfect fusion of Marty Robbins and Liz Phair you never knew you needed. The twelve tracks on Yesterday's Glitter resonate with vintage timbre but they also cut with a twenty-first century urgency. Lead Single “I Can't Talk To You” lightly teases a lover for being too self centered, while the melodic bass and chimey guitar weave a counterpoint that almost tells a story of its own. “Nothing you can say to a person with a broken heart,” she sings. “Nothing you can hear when the song in your head's too country.” The album's second single, "Hollow the Words," is sonically peppy and lilting, but finds clouds behind its silver lining. "It was tragically beautiful being with you," Hale sings. She describes the song, inspired by the transience of San Francisco, as "a love song to my friend family." It's emblematic of an album whose rumbling bass and soaring vocals are always pretty, but never simple. Hale describes recording Yesterday's Glitter as a serendipitous process of "electric collaboration" alongside producer and guitar player Jason Cirimele. "While tracking 'The Tighter the Grip,' Jason said 'You know what this song needs?' To which I replied, 'Fuzz bass chords on the chorus!' He said 'That's exactly what I was going to say!'" Over the course of three years, the pair brought in friends and bandmates to create the record's rich sound, including Brian Bethel on bass and Rob Mills (Spooky Mansion) and Cody Rhodes (Geographer, Curls) on drums. On Yesterday's Glitter, mid-century country pop stylings get fitted with fuzzy guitars and filtered through a curtain of dreamy Casio nostalgia to create an album you'll have on repeat.

“Bergen Street” The Brooklyn-born Chapin Sisters's new single—which is their first new material since 2017's Ferry Boat—is called "Bergen Street" and it's about moving. And because it's about moving from Brooklyn to the Hudson Valley, The Chapin sisters have had to have a lot of conversations about that move and what it means. Leaving Brooklyn really is kind of a big deal for sisters Abigail and Lily because they have pretty deep familial roots there. The Chapins are a Brooklyn family and their father Tom and his five brothers put their stamp on the city with their sixties folk band The Chapin Brothers. Two of those brothers you might recognize immediately--Tom Chapin is a well-known folk legend, whose albums for kids are absolute staples and their late uncle Harry, whose "Cats In The Cradle" is a staple on AM radio, was a beloved singer/songwriter as well. Reaching back further, their grandfather Jim Chapin was a well-known and respected jazz drummer. So music and Brooklyn run deep and moving away was a big deal and "Bergen Street" effortlessly chronicles what it feels like to have familiar geography in your rear view mirror. It's a wrenching, aching and utterly gorgeous song that's filled with poetic precision, melodic finesse and otherworldly harmonic bliss. In other words, the Chapin Sisters have stayed right on brand. Since 2004 they've put out a handful of marvelous albums, including The Chapin Sisters Sing The Chapin Brothers, A Date With The Everly Brothers and Lake Bottom. They've also recorded with Cass McCombs and She and Him, and collaborated with Michael Fitzpatrick of Fitz and the Tantrums as well as Louie Stephens of Rooney. Pick any of their albums or EPs and prepare to swoon. Their voices braid effortlessly together and rise and fall with heartbreaking immediacy. Their phrasing is precise, their delivery is heavenly and the way every syllable soars is nothing short of spellbinding. www.thechapinsisters.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Episode sixteen of The Vineyard Podcast W/ Jack Name (Jack Name, White Fence) "In a time rife with alienation, Magic Touch, the third album by the ubiquitous and mysterious Jack Name, offers the comfort of contact. With a body of work that ranges from the catchy to the cacophonous, Name has earned the reputation of a musician who's difficult to define. For over a decade, he's been a fixture in the Los Angeles underground. His songs have appeared on albums by U.S. Girls (Heavy Light, 2020) and White Fence (Family Perfume, 2012); he's produced recordings for Cass McCombs; and his experimental music has been performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Magic Touch reveals yet another side of Jack Name. While it's every bit as intricate as his previous releases, 2014's Light Show and 2015's Weird Moons, here he's done away with the dense production of his earlier work to make a record that feels stark, personal, and effortlessly natural." We're feeling the love this week on @weheardwonders. Andrew gives his verdict on last weekend's @connectfestsco and Iain salutes a singular album celebrating its 28th anniversary. Then it's down to the new releases: big returns from Arctic Monkeys (now that he's checked out of the Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, where will Alex Turner take up residency next?), alt-country singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose and pagan psychedelists Goat (will Iain be tempted to join fully-paid-up card-carrying tribe-member Andrew in the group's commune?), plus beguiling tunes from Silvana Estrada and Cass McCombs ripe for unpacking. Finally, something suitably stirring and cinematic has The Vinyl Word. Some bands make fans wait years between albums, and others have been very consistent with rolling out new releases. Early aughts groups Hot Chip and Silversun Pickups fall into the ladder category, dropping a new album like clockwork every two or three years. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their thoughts on Hot Chip's latest LP Freakout/Release (33:56) and Silversun Pickups' new project Physical Thrills (24:53), two albums which rely heavily on synths. The biggest indie news of this week came from a band no one has heard much from in over 15 years: McLusky. The Welsh group officially disbanded in 2005, but they just announced they're going on a North American tour this fall (41:45). Indiecast also discusses the 25th anniversary of Oasis' Be Here Now, partially reigniting the Blur vs. Oasis britpop discourse (47:39).In this week's Recommendation Corner (57:05), Ian tells listeners to check out Spielbergs' new album Vestli. Meanwhile, Steven endorses Cass McCombs' tenth studio album Heartmind.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 102 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Bogie currently leads The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo, a nine piece Winds and Drum group that just released their debut album entitled The Prophets In The City (Royal Potato Family) — the main focus of this episode. The Prophets in the City is a collaboration between old friends, as Bogie teams with drummer extraordinaire Joe Russo most known for helming Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Heightening Bogie's fiery arrangements and Russo's dynamic drumming, The Prophets in the City features a supporting cast of musicians whose resumes run through some of New York City's most beloved bands including Antibalas, The Dap-Kings, Budos Band, St. Vincent, and David Byrne's American Utopia. The resulting efforts on the debut album are riotous and jubilant, pushing the boundaries of instrumental music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Stuart Bogie discuss how New York City's energy and spirit directly inspired The Prophets in the City. They discuss the brilliant grouping of players on the album and what it's like for Bogie to work with the phenomenally talented Joe Russo. They discuss music that has influenced Bogie over the years, a variety of his other projects, and so much more. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When Ariel Rechtshaid fronted a ska pop band called The Hippos, I doubt he had any clue where his musical path would take him. They had a big hit in 2000 with “Wasting My Life”, which scored a spot in the Hottest 100. But playing on stage wasn't to be his destiny. After some time in the band Foreign Born, he stepped back and started crafting other people's songs. As a writer and producer, his CV has ballooned from indie artists like Cass McCombs, Blood Orange and Sky Ferreira, to huge names like Usher, Kylie Minogue, U2, and Adele. His collaborations with Vampire Weekend extend back to their last two, for HAIM it's their entire catalogue. When you think back over the past decade in music, Ariel Rechtshaid is responsible for so many of the songs you love. Which is why I asked him to Take 5, and take us into his studio to peel back the layers of five of his biggest songs. Even if you're not a gear head, this is an amazing conversation, and it reflects the grounded nature of Ariel, who works alongside his best mates one day, and some of the world's biggest artists the next. Through it all, his drive to find that sweet spot, to solve that problem, answer that question, guides him always. A man walks his dog in front of vacant commercial spaces along Main Street in Fitchburg, Mass. (Credit: Jesse Costa/WBUR) While Boston has more than rebounded from the great recession, many of New England’s smaller cities are still feeling the pain of de-industrialization. But in Massachusetts, some of these former mill towns are plotting a comeback. We take a look at what two so-called Gateway Cities are doing to provide economic opportunity — and we consider how the high cost of rental housing in growing towns can keep some low-income New Englanders from getting a leg up. In the second part of this episode, we continue our series about the biggest issues facing each of the New England states this election season. And finally, we remember an iconic New England restaurant chain as it fades from the region. Gateway to the American Dream Immigrant workers from Ireland and Germany were some of the first laborers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, filling the city’s 19th-century mill buildings with the hum of textile looms. Today, Lawrence has converted these buildings to refurbished work spaces for artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Shannon Dooling of WBUR brings us the story of how two Massachusetts towns are working to pull their economies into the 21st century. Angie Jimenez is a graduate of Entrepreneurship for All, a business accelerator program in Lawrence. She’s starting a cooking school in a renovated mill building in the city. (Credit: Jesse Costa/WBUR) It seems that the closer you are to the boom that's happening in Boston, the better off you are, and the same goes for cities in southwestern Connecticut, in the orbit of New York City. But economic booms bring high housing costs, sometimes far exceeding what lower-wage workers can afford. That's especially problematic in many of New England's coastal communities. And as rent prices rise, assistance for those who can't afford those rents is not keeping pace. We speak with Andrew Flowers, an economics writer at FiveThirtyEight, whose recent article on the subject profiled a family in South Portland, Maine. (Credit: FiveThirtyEight) Happy Fall! Can You Smell the Election? In New Hampshire, a high-profile Senate race is racking up record spending. In Massachusetts, ballot questions like whether to legalize marijuana for recreational use, and whether to lift the state cap on charter schools, loom large. And in Maine, perhaps the biggest question is whether Governor LePage’s latest outbursts will tilt the state legislature’s power balance toward the Democrats. Our panelists are Casey McDermott, digital reporter for New Hampshire Public Radio; Felice Belman, politics editor at the Boston Globe; and Bill Nemitz, columnist for the Portland Press Herald and the Maine Sunday Telegram. (If you missed last week’s conversation on Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont, you can listen here). Bye Bye, HoJo’s! Howard Johnson’s began as a seaside stand on Wollaston Beach in Quincy, Massachusetts, where clams, along with rich ice cream, and hot dogs — called “frankforts” — helped make the place famous. Hojoland.com features photos of “HoJo Ghosts” – buildings that were once Howard Johnson’s and have been converted. This one on Route 34 in Derby, CT is now a Tail Gators bar. (Credit: Hojoland.com) The story goes that Bostonians came to love the place when Eugene O'Neill's “Strange Interlude” was banned in Boston, and theatergoers went south to Quincy to see a performance… with a dinner intermission at the Howard Johnson's across the street. At its height, there were more than 1,000 HoJos locations — with their iconic orange roofs — on highway rest stops, and dotting the neighborhoods of New England, New York, and points beyond. Today, Howard Johnson’s exists as a hotel chain, but there is just one HoJo’s restaurant left, in Lake George, New York. The last location in New England — in Bangor, Maine — closed earlier this month. To pay our respects, we invited Howard Mann, the man behind the website hojoland.com, to discuss the restaurant chain’s rich New England legacy. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR.
