What happens when an ultimatum doesn't work, and instead of bringing people into alignment with your cause, it pushes them into the very thing you're trying to prevent or discourage?   In the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, President George W. Of course, we are all part the sum of our experiences, and Jesse was abused by his mother as a child. Jesse talks about how a history of childhood trauma and a victim mentality can be a dangerous thing.  Jesse earlier spent time in prison and was in solitary confinement for a year, while reading up in the library on all sorts of fundamentalist material that strengthened his convictions.   He has such a long and rich story, so at times, I just wanted to sit back and listen, occasionally steering the conversation this way or that. He's an intense and cerebral man, and talks with absolute honesty about what he did and why he did it.    Takes us into the life of a street preacher and a jihadi whose bomb designs were used by terrorists at the Boston Marathon. It may suit our ideology of good and bad to think of terrorists as either stupid or morally bankrupt, but Jesse talks about the far more nuanced and intricate traits and at play. Those who are highly intelligent but very unsuccessful, he says, try to tear down the world as it is, and rebuild it to suit their talents or purposes, a world where ‘everybody recognises my greatness'.   His work focuses on getting inside the minds of the top extremists, and denouncing violence to them. We are witnessing more terrorist attacks than ever by offenders previously thought to have been rehabilitated. In this episode we hear from Professor Ian Acheson, former Director of Community Safety with responsibility for running the UK government's Counter-Terrorism strategy, CONTEST, with the Home Office. In 2015, Ian led an independent review of Islamist extremism in prison and probation services in the UK. About Jesse: Jesse Morton is founder and head of Parallel Networks, an organization combating hate and extremism, and research coordinator for the Institute for Strategic Dialogue’s Against Violent Extremism Network in North America. Once a prominent radicalizer in the West, Morton co-founded and was chief propagandist of Revolution Muslim, a New York City-based group active in the 2000s, where he helped insert the narrative of Al-Qaeda and Salafi-jihadist ideology into the American ambit. He has lectured at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University (Saudi Arabia) and Sunderland University (Morocco), and worked at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, focused on issues such as jihadist propaganda. September 11, 2001 will always be the day remembered most as the moment terrorism came to New York and changed our country forever. Since this day, social scientists, government agencies, and law enforcement organizations have struggled to understand, identify and prevent radicalization and extreme beliefs from causing more violence and chaos. On this episode of Thread of Evidence, we hear the story of Jesse Morton, who went from being an all-American boy to a prominent radicalizer and chief propagandist for Revolution Muslim. Describing himself today as a reformed extremist and terrorist, he founded a nonprofit with the former NYPD official who once monitored him to combat hate and extremism and promote disengagement.  Jesse Morton is co-founder and chief propagandist of Revolution Muslim, a New York City-based group active in the 2000s, he helped to insert the narrative of Al-Qaeda and Salafi-jihadist ideology into the American ambit. Jesse Morton was once a radical jihadi involved in the American offshoot of the banned British extremist group Al-Muhajiroun. Al-Muhajiroun's leader, Anjem Choudary, was convicted of inviting others to support the so-called Islamic State, and is awaiting sentencing. And Morton himself crossed the line and was sentenced to 11 1/2 years in prison for making violent threats in America. But while he was locked up, Morton underwent a profound transformation and is now speaking out against Islamic extremism. Morton, who is now free and working at a think tank at George Washington University, talks to David Aaronovitch about how he was seduced by jihadi ideology, how he snared others with radical interpretations of Islamic texts, and eventually how he came to see the errors in his own thinking and is working to repair the damage he caused along the way.
