Al-Gharbi's book provides rigorous empirical research on social attitudes, class structures, and identifies four patterns that he calls "the great awokenings" which are driven by "elite overproduction" and liberals and leftists appear the same to so many people. In The Backroom (on Patreon), Musa and I continue the conversation by connecting Musa's materialist socio-economic theory of Wokeness and Symbolic Capitalists to Tony's Genealogy of Wokeism essay, plus additional examples, arguments, and pushback that we did not have time for on the main episode.Timestamps:00:00:00 Changing Minds vs Material Conditions (The Backroom Preview)00:05:34 An Empirical Theory of Wokeism 00:14:41 Who are The “Symbolic Capitalists”?00:23:55 Top 20% not just the 1%00:33:45 Elite overproduction and intra-elite competition00:38:31 The 2010s The Great Awokening 00:53:58 Is “woke” dead? This week, hosts Garth Casbourn and Maris Schneider speak to Sarah Capellaro, a master's student in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Sarah is developing methods to reduce bias against autistic people seeking to enter the workforce. Her particular focus is on promoting a growth mindset amongst hiring managers via carefully prepared infographic interventions. She studies how viewing these interventions affects managers' attitudes towards autistic applicants. Sarah has been able to recruit a very impressive 400 participants in her experiment and shows us that it is possible to change, or at least momentarily influence, people's biases to create more fair hiring practices. The most prominent argument against purpose is that doing good doesn't actually pay off at the bottom line. For decades, and throughout Carol Cone's career, skeptics have dismissed purpose as a “soft” strategy that is good for reputation but not for financial returns. That misconception is what Impact ROI set out to challenge. Impact ROI's Project ROI reports have published research that links purpose to profit. And with the release of the newest edition, there is now fresh data connecting purpose to financial value. We invited Steve Rochlin, CEO of Impact ROI, to walk us through this new research and how it can be used to make the case to leaders focused on financial returns. From revealing how sustainability leaders can see up to a 36% boost in market value and a 57% reduction in employee turnover, to outlining the “Fit, Commit, Manage, and Connect” framework that defines high-performing purpose strategies, Rochlin offers a key strategies for organizations looking to align impact with performance.Listen for insights on:How to convince your CFO to champion purposeHow purpose-driven firms outperform peers in profitability and growthWhy doing good is the smartest growth strategy today Resources + Links:Steve Rochlin's LinkedInImpact ROIProject ROI Report (free) (00:00) - Welcome to Purpose 360 (00:13) - Meet Steve Rochlin, Impact ROI (02:30) - Steve's Background (04:40) - Project ROI 2015 (06:10) - Project ROI 2025 (08:59) - Key Findings and Data Points (14:51) - Two to Three Key Points (16:26) - Changing Minds (18:24) - Fit, Commit, Manage, and Connect: Fit (19:15) - Fit, Commit, Manage, and Connect: Commit (20:49) - Fit, Commit, Manage, and Connect: Manage (21:45) - Fit, Commit, Manage, and Connect: Connect (23:32) - What to Do Next (26:09) - Last Words (28:21) - Wrap Up

Is polite persuasion impossible among the presently polarized populace? Mindstuck: Mastering the Art of Changing Minds author Michael McQueen has answers! What We Discuss with Michael McQueen: Despite technological advances that have changed how we communicate, the psychology that dictates our persuasion, decision-making, and thinking remains the same. The effects of rationalizing our existing beliefs and the power of our expectations and perceptions. The importance of not defining ourselves by our opinions. Practical persuasion techniques such as priming and the power of sequence, as well as the effectiveness — and associated dangers — of using fear as a persuasive tool. How an understanding of these concepts can improve our ability to communicate and persuade — even when society seems hopelessly polarized (and doubly so during an election year). And much more...
