Welcome to "Changing Minds," a podcast that delves into the complexities of our food landscape, exploring topics like factory-grown meat and the consciousness surrounding healthy eating. As we navigate the modern food industry, one pressing question arises: Are we truly informed about the choices we make concerning the food we consume and its impact on our health? Recent discussions have highlighted the stark difference in the affordability of ultra-processed versus healthy foods. Despite public health campaigns, there's still a lack of motivation at both individual and statutory levels to invest in healthier dietary choices. This gap in awareness and action becomes even more evident when controversial topics like lab-grown meat enter the conversation, capturing public attention yet often overshadowing the nutritional deficits of conventional, factory-farmed meat products. In this episode, we'll explore whether a robust national campaign could effectively highlight the profound impact our diets have on longevity, quality of life, and disease prevention. With insights into successful public health initiatives and those that have fallen short, we'll assess what it takes to change public perceptions and behaviors towards nutrition. Additionally, we'll tackle the "ick factor" associated with lab-grown meat and discuss how better understanding its potential could reshape our food choices—provided the public is well informed about its safety and nutritional value. Join us as we investigate the journey from awareness to action, and envision a future where healthy eating is not just an option but an appealing and accessible norm.

Max is a philosopher, a futurist, and a transhumanist - a term which he coined in 1990, the same year that he legally changed his name from O'Connor to More. One of the tenets of transhumanism is that technology will allow us to prevent and reverse the aging process, and in the meantime we can preserve our brains with a process known as cryonics. In 1995 Max was awarded a PhD for a thesis on the nature of death, and from 2010 to 2020, he was CEO of Alcor, the world's biggest cryonics organisation.Max is firmly optimistic about our future prospects, and wary of any attempts to impede or regulate the development of technologies which can enhance or augment us.Selected follow-ups:Extropic Thoughts - Max More's writing on SubstackThe Biostasis Standard - Max's writings on "the latest in the field of biostasis and cryonics"Neophile - WikipediaThe Time of the Ice Box - Episode of 1970 BBC children's TV series TimeslipCryostasis Revival: The Recovery of Cryonics Patients through Nanomedicine - 2022 book by Robert FreitasResearchers perform first successful transplant of functional cryopreserved rat kidney - news from the University of MinnesotaLarge Mammal BPF Prize Winning Announcement - news from the Brain Preservation FoundationThe European Biostasis FoundationAlcor Life Extension FoundationMusic: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain DeclarationWhat If? Michael McQueen: Mindstuck Michael McQueen has spent the past two decades helping organizations and leaders win the battle for relevance. He specializes in helping clients navigate uncertainty and stay one step ahead of change. Michael is a bestselling author of nine books and a familiar face on the international conference circuit, having shared the stage with the likes of Bill Gates, Dr. John C. Maxwell, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Having formerly been named Australia's Keynote Speaker of the Year, he has been inducted into the Professional Speakers Hall of Fame. He is the author of Mindstuck: Mastering the Art of Changing Minds*. There's a lot of evidence that our minds would rather feel right than be right. How then, do you influence someone when they are really convinced of their position? In this conversation, Michael and I discuss the initial steps that help in changing people's minds. Key Points Our tendency is to convince to the inquiring mind, but we'll do better if we speak to the instinctive mind first. Help others lessen loss and maintain dignity by preserving titles, language, and symbols in things that are new. Instead of trying making an argument, ask a question that allows the other person to listen to themselves. Ask questions that clarify points of resistance or misunderstanding. Speak like you're right, listen like you're wrong. If you were to track how many times per day someone tried to convince you to change in some way, chances are you'd fill up pages worth of tally marks. We often get sucked into thinking that the way to change people's minds to get them to do what we want them to do is to present them with enough evidence, data, and proof that our way is the "right" way. But deep down, you know that's not how it works, don't you? If you're not sure, allow my guest, Michael McQueen, to lay it out for you. Michael is the author of the book "Mindstuck: Mastering the Art of Changing Minds," and in this conversation, Michael outlines why so often, our approach to change fails to take into account two of the most important factors in human belief and behavior: identity and dignity. Can a New Revolution of Ideas Rescue America from Political Despair? Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "The finest heart and health supplement in the world!": https://www.briannicholsshow.com/heart Brian Nichols dives deep into whether a grassroots movement focused on timeless truths rather than politicians could spark a national renewal. He analyzes the growing feeling of political homelessness across the spectrum and how ordinary folks are losing faith in the partisan status quo. Is there a path forward that transcends the stale left vs right culture wars? In this solo episode, Brian pushes back on the gloomy predictions he heard from a recent podcast episode. The hosts seemed resigned to an authoritarian tide that cannot be turned back. However, Brian draws hope from the liberty uprising sparked by Ron Paul. If we focus on winning hearts and minds in our communities rather than forcing top-down change, American exceptionalism can thrive again. The path to healing the fraying social fabric runs through schools, churches, and kitchen tables - not Washington D.C. As the professional political class grandstands, there are openings for governors and mayors to be closer to the people. Brian advocates for empowered citizens over bureaucrats, for activated communities over federal one-size-fits-all policies. Together, we can roll back the creeping centralized power through voluntary civic action. Grassroots charity beats bureaucratic welfare every time. Ordinary folks are aching to rediscover the lost anchors that once promoted opportunity. Clear visions straight from those facing problems first-hand can emerge to remind Americans our best days lie ahead. This is how we put society back together - through casual conversations that rekindle shared hopes. Brian invites you not to lose hope but to spread useful ideas that better real lives right now! ❤️ Order Cardio Miracle (https://www.briannicholsshow.com/heart) with code TBNS at checkout for 15% off and take a step towards better heart health and overall well-being!
Is polite persuasion impossible among the presently polarized populace? Mindstuck: Mastering the Art of Changing Minds author Michael McQueen has answers! What We Discuss with Michael McQueen: Despite technological advances that have changed how we communicate, the psychology that dictates our persuasion, decision-making, and thinking remains the same. The effects of rationalizing our existing beliefs and the power of our expectations and perceptions. The importance of not defining ourselves by our opinions. Practical persuasion techniques such as priming and the power of sequence, as well as the effectiveness — and associated dangers — of using fear as a persuasive tool. How an understanding of these concepts can improve our ability to communicate and persuade — even when society seems hopelessly polarized (and doubly so during an election year). And much more... Richard Dawkins and I have appeared together onstage many times, been the subject of the documentary The Unbelievers, and have collaborated on various writing projects as well. Thus it may come as a surprise to you to learn that each time we get together, we find new things to discuss and learn from each other. It surprises us as well. This fall we agreed to appear onstage together at two separate events co-sponsored by The Origins Project. The events, entitled Changing Minds in Changing Times were coordinated by Atheist UK and were in London and Birmingham. In both events I gave short presentations, and at the end of the event Richard and I appeared together onstage for a dialogue. At the first event I was able to discuss with Richard his latest book, Books do Furnish a Life, and at the second event, for the first time, Richard interviewed me, for his new podcast, The Poetry of Reality. We have combined these two dialogues here into a single podcast. Together they cover a broad collection of subjects, from science, to science communication, and finally to the threats to free inquiry now occurring in higher education. As always, I find it an absolute pleasure to spend time conversing with Richard. He is charming, eloquent, and insightful. I hope you enjoy these newest discussions as much as I did. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. Your subscriptions support the non-profit Origins Project Foundation, which produces the podcast. The audio version is available free on the Critical Mass site and on all podcast sites, and the video version will also be available on the Origins Project Youtube channel as well.
